Does anybody have an answer?
"I plugged in my Barcode scanner but my barcode scanner does not show up yet it installed correctly. How do i get it to identify my scanner? It is a Metrologic Instruments "Focus", MS1690 issued to me by IBM.

I would like to build a database of barcode data for groceries and supplements. It seems there would be three main parts. 1. scan the codes 2. lookup the codes to get the text data, etc. 3. store the data and codes in a database.

Am I mistaken, of does this program only do the first task? Anyone know of a program that does all three? It would be nice if the scanner was on my Android phone and would sync with the database on my Win10 computer.
Tnx

rich,
This program can do part 1 when you use your webcam for the scanning.
But it mainly does part 2: decoding barcodes to their numbers and/or text...

I guessed that the name for registration was

giveawayoftheday

and used that with the registration key included.

It seemed to work although I could be wrong!

well I scanned my bit of shopping but was disappointed with the lack of control over the image. That said I finally got a decent scan and it interpreted the lines (ordinary bar-code) into numerals but I searched high and low and although connected to the WWW it didn't tell me what the product was. I had to google the number to find out. Surely that facility would not have been difficult to implement.
Would have loved to see a picture of the product in question too.
Ah well.
Its a fun toy, I guess.

Terry e,

What you ask for is actually extremely difficult.
There are billions and billions of products and most barcodes are NOT unique to a specific product. At most, they are unique to a brand though. But even that is not a garantuee.
Also, not all codes (eg: EAN) for products are listed publically. And there is not a single worldwide database for all of them.
So, yes, it is extremely difficult to search for such codes.

You could google a number, and if you do that with lots of them you will soon see that, although you might eventually find the product it corresponds to via some vendor's site which listed the product together with the 'official' barcode, you will need to search lots of websites (but that is what google is good for I guess)....

Barcode Reader does not automatically select
decoding method of barcode but user himself
must GUESS which of about 35 decoding modes in menu
he should choose
You have to guess which of the 35 decoding methods you should choose in the menu during DECODE and after several attempts get the digit code
but you get NO explanations for what the numbers mean -
not Manufacturer Number, not Item Number - absolutely nothing

What is the meaning of this software?

Gunilla,

Many codes are only meaningfull to the vendor.
They are NOT unique (hence you can make your own too).
So, for a program to tell you what they actually mean would be pure magic.

Now, there are codes like EAN-codes which should officially have a specific meaning though. But even those are NOT garantueed to be unique per product.

Anybody in the world can (and often will) use the same code for different things.

I actually have a handheld bar code scanner. It's stored in the garage now. I used to use it to scan barcodes on books for a library software program, but I may have to drag it back out for this. And given that one can use this program to scan bar codes from various sources (web cams, images, etc.), it sounds like a great program. I'm going to try it.

Very strange Where is the programme ?

I downloaded, up came GiveawayOftheDay Installer
(never seen that one before)
Usually there just come a normal installing programme

unzipped the zipfile and clicked setup.exe
GOTD responded: Activated and showed the code
(same as in readme.txt)

Then came a werfault.exe never seen that one before
clicked, nothing happened

Nothing downloaded nor installed
checked c:\program files (x86) and c:\program files

NOTHING !

What on Earth happened here ?

This 'easy to use' program can read the standard QR codes but it was impossible to use a QR code that used a light-blue color (instead of the 'normal' black that is used). Of course I tested the QR codes before using Barcode Reader 10.4.5. Something I couldn't see is how to remove text (via the software, not via notepad or other software) that was added in the export: I made a QR code with only my phone number but in the text 'tel:' was added before the number. Since this software is on a normal computer it's still usable but many people have smartphones now: scanning on those devices would mean people could call me instantly. Well, nothing to worry about.

Reply   |   Comment by Sammy  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-2)

Sammy,
Then that is not this program's fault, but the fault of the program you made your QR with!

QR-codes can have special types, like telephone numbers, or URLs, besides pure text. Those types of QR-codes make it so that when you scan them the scanner will automatically call (in case of a telephone number) or visit the site (in case of an URL), etc...

So, if you make a QR-code with your telephone number AND you do NOT want other scanners to automatically call you when the code is scanned with them, you need to make absolutly sure that the prefix tel: is NOT added. In other words: that you make a pure text QR code without any prefixes.

Many (cheap, badly made) QR-code generators will automatically pute the tel: prefix in front of the telephone number when you select "I want to enter a telephone number".... So make sure you don't use such generator, or that you disable that function. Only in that way you can make a pure text QR-code and when that code gets scanned, a decent scanner will simply show you the text (your telephone number in this case) and NOT do anything automatically (which can be a HUGE security risk because you NEVER know for sure what the QR-code contains just by looking at it... it could be a malicious URL for example...)

So, bottom line: if the tel: prefix is there when you scanned the code, it means it was put there by the code-generator, not the code-reader.

GOTD or someone please explain how to
read barcodes FROM my computer with Barcode Reader installed ??
Normally you need a special scanner
to read barcodes
no computer has such scanner installed
Should one have to buy a special scanner and which one?
And how connect it to computer to use Barcode Reader?

Cyberina, this is on description....

Cyberina, after installing and registering and clicking on "Acquire Image" it asked me "which device do you want to use", since my iPhone just happened to be plugged into a USB port it asked me if I wanted to use "Apple iPhone".

Meh, I then plugged in my Barcode scanner and tried again but my barcode scanner does not show up yet it installed correctly. How do i get it to identify my scanner? It is a Metrologic Instruments "Focus", MS1690 issued to me by IBM.

Cyberina,

You can read a barcode from an image file stored on your computer. Say you have a PNG image file of a common QR code. Just import the image into the program and it will translate the QR code into whatever it contains for you to see.

Reply   |   Comment by TJ  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+10)

Cyberina,
You can take a picture of the bar code with your phone or other digital camera and then upload the photo to your computer where this program will read the bar code from the photo.
Also, if you have a printer with a scanner built-in, as many of them do, you can just scan the document with the bar code on it and then save the scan to your computer as a JPG file, then again use this program to read the bar code from it.
And as the others mentioned, if you have a "web cam" on your computer, you hold up the document with the bar code on it in front of the camera and this program will read the bar code from the camera.

Cyberina, A scanner normally has its own software.

Reply   |   Comment by honoriuc  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

autotran,

This program is NOT meant to be used with a real barcode scanners!

A real hardware barcode scanner has software BUILD IN to read and decode bar codes. A real bar code scanner outputs readable text already (it simulates a keyboard).

Bob,
(and others who upvoted your comment)

You completely and utterly miss the point and purpose of such programs like this.....

Reply   |   Comment by Oscar  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Bob,
That of course is assuming you HAVE a phone with a QR or barcode app on it.
As unusual as it might seem, not everyone does have a smartphone in their pockets.
This program gives anyone who doesn't have access to a smartphone a solution for reading barcodes. It might take a few extra steps, but it DOES make it possible to do.
