Much like a couple of other users, I have managed to download, unzip and install the software after disabling my Avast Antivirus, but when it comes to REGISTERING the software, what do we enter for License Name (the License Key is included in the downloaded zip file)?
After entering the License Key, there is NO indication that registration was successful and the program's title bar still says FREEWARE. Has the software been registered?

Javier, in the readme file >> Run the program, go to Help => Registration, enter any name and the key provided.

Thanks', but I have the same problem with registration: "there is NO indication that registration was successful and the program's title bar still says FREEWARE"
What shall I do to get this GiveAway?

The software installs OK but the registration code does nothing. There is no return message for registering and the software does not acknowledge the registration. A lot of options but otherwise outdated and it has the registration problem.

Okay, so I installed and registered it, but the title bar still says "Freeware", just with the licensed name appended to the end. I looked at their web site and there are lots of license options and I have no idea what this is? The Freeware version with a name display option?

I have their Reader Freeware installed already (which is quite annoying to use but does work) so decided to try this too as it saves using a web-site to construct barcodes...

I'm trying to install the software, but it doesn't work.
First I click on unpack the files. Then, click Setup. I get the UAC box (Do you want to allow... bla-bla-bla...). I click yes.

Then, I get the other box that says "Successfully activated", with the registration key. Then I click Close (I don't click on "Install Software Informer"). As soon as I close that box, a Web page opens up informing me that the software as been activated.

And... nothing! The software is not installed, no folders, no desktop icon!

What did I do wrong?

JimK, The wrapper on the software gets rejected by a lot of anti-virus units. Disable your antivirus program, and try to re-install again. Once installed successfully, re-activate the anti virus program.

Follow-up: I went to the company's website, and downloaded the trial version. I installed it (without any problem), and activated it with the key provided here.

It's now working properly. Thank you for the offer!

Follow-up on ... Follow-up!
I just noticed that I downloaded the freeware version from ByteScout website. And it doesn't seem to be much different than the one offered here.

I want to try it for "personal use" not for business, so I don't know what's the difference between the freeware and the GAOTD offered here. Maybe none!

JimK, From what I gather, the business edition, offered here, allows for more users etc. Also, I may be be mistaken, but once the "freeware edition" gets activated, it opens up the premium edition.

JimK,

It is not clear to me whether you are extracting the files inside the Zip to a location outside the Zip file.

It sounds like you opened the Zip file in Windows or used a program that does effectively the same thing (viewer/unpacker), and then clicked on Setup.

Most Setup programs do not have the ability to read the contents of a Zip file. There are some exceptions, but most do not. As a rule, when in doubt, extract the files to a new location, exit the unpacker/viewer, so that you are back at a regular folder, then start the Setup.exe. As long as the Setup.gcs and Setup.exe are in the same "unzipped" folder, everything should work.

I know it can be confusing because the Setup.exe file will start when you click it inside the Zip file, or inside a Zip file unpacker/viewer, but when this Setup program is executing, it needs to have access to the Setup.gcs file, and it is still inside the Zip file. The actual Setup.exe has been loaded into execution memory, but the data it needs is not available unless it is a regular file.

Exception:
When the Zip file contains a Setup.exe file but nothing else, then it does not need anything else from the Zip file, so starting these from inside the Zip file is OK.

The window you see after an install that has the option to install Software Informer is a separate process from the Setup program. It is more of an ad than anything else. The installer program is set up to kick the additional program off when the installer has completed, and it does it regardless of whether the install was successful or not. You should not use the message it displays as an indication as to whether the actual install worked or not.

I hope that helps.

What's the difference between this version and the freeware version posted on ByteScout's webpage? The only thing their site indicates is that you can buy a license for business or multiple user use.

This software has a lot of features - a very long list of available barcode formats etc.

The interface looks easy enough to use - on the surface.

I was looking at generating a QR Code and could find how to change the background, foreground colours, add text and position the text but I couldn't find any place to tell the QR Code where to go and what to do when the person reads it - there's a small i that pops-up a message with some short-cut codes but the minute you move your mouse away it removes the info.

So if I just wanted to type in a URL and get a QR Code for this - which is a very simple procedure and there are many free online QR Code generators that will do that for you - with Bytescoute you'd need to know a lot about certain coding etc. to get that right and for me it wouldn't be worth the effort. (Assuming that's even possible, for all I know those codes could be just for the text.)

Unfortunately, I had the similar experience with Bytescout Screen Recorder - there are so many settings that if you don't know what you're doing and what exact settings you need, your recording ends up looking rubbish. With other screen recorders you can just use the defaults and you're good.

However, if you have a number or value and you want to generate a variety of barcodes from that, for example an EAN barcode, then this app will be perfect for that.

This would seem to be invaluable to authors who want to quote on-line sources used in reference, or for the reader to use to view other work by the author that is available on line.

That's what I intend to use it for, anyway -- generating Q-codes that can be immediately scanned by a mobile phone, to bring the reader to "further information".... MUCH more convenient of course than having to very carefully type into one's browser a long and sometimes complicated URL (where one mistake will mean you won't get it).

We're talking about the "journey" from a PAPER copy to an electronic display. You don't need it ON a computer -- all you need there is to copy and "Paste and Go" a URL of any length into your browser.

Interestingly, as I understand it, Q-codes developed out of a way to send FAXES in highly compressed form, which was simply as a bar of similar shapes, about an inch high, across a normal A4 sheet of fax paper. Of course, it required a decoder the other end -- probably the reason it soon died. But an intriguing idea -- that now finds its home in BOOKS and print-published material.... So thanks indeed to that/those original inventor(s)...

Tranmontane, -- Sorry, I must be stuck in the world of James Bond -- it isn't Q-codes, of course, it is QR-Codes...

The character "Q" developed a lot of fantastic gadgets for Bond -- but not this one. The QR-code system was actually invented in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave. Understandably -- since the fax machine itself was invented in Japan....

Does this generate the current version of the address bar codes for USPS?

Reply   |   Comment by glnz  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

The software does include a 'POSTNET' barcode format. I'm not sure if there are multiple formats of 'POSTNET', though.

Reply   |   Comment by bhahbh  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

bhahbh,
Thanks for info. Unfortunately, the USPS stopped working with 'POSTNET" -- which I already have on my old Office 2003 -- and now uses the Intelligent Mail Barcode (also known as OneCode Solution), which I do NOT have on my various apps.
Is there an app that provides the Intelligent Mail Barcode for copying onto a .docx for an label or envelope?

glnz, the algorithm to create an IMbc (intelligent mail barcode) is very complex. Here's a link to a tool provided by USPS to encode and decode the barcode. https://ribbs.usps.gov/onecodesolution/download.cfm?downloads=Calculator&selection=16

[ glnz ],

Yes this has intelligent mail, you can cut and paste a list, and you can select the type of output image files ( and image qualities ).

No, it's not a Word add-in, you'll have to get clever to incorporate the generated files into other programs, such as envelope or address-label printing.

They have Mac iOS and Linux and mainframe programs, too.

I figured that somebody had to do it -- and it was the USPS United States Postal Service themselves.
