i do not think it is fair to comment on the bad side of any software only; equal attention should be paid to their good side. I do not agree on the subject that there cannot be any complaints because it is free. Say what you want but the people from gaotd should pay more attention to what is offered. Anything offered is offered by them in conjunction with software writers, both have equal responsabilities: one for endorsing, the other for producing the program.
Just to make matters clear: yesterday I could not activate the software despite my interest in running it. Who to blame ? The site, of course as the activation could not connect to the site. Others have found out that memory management is not the best characteristic of the program. Is it a clear sign that untested software is being offered ?

@96 (Locket): Texts are read literally; none of us is a mindreader who can interprete the text with the thoughts and intentions the writer had when writing the text... I have to assume that it was meant literally since there were no emoticons (smilies) present to show otherwise.

@98 (GoodGTOD): I sometimes wonder whether people actually read; I gave a (be it very brief) review: that I won't use something Flash related because of its many security issues. That too is an opinion, and given the fact that (an estimated) 75% of the computers connected to the internet are infected with some kind of malware a useful one IMO.

I see that people do slate some of the software on here that is given away free but if they were to criticise in a more adult manor then these gripes would be taken on board more seriously. If you can help someone out by pointing things out that are both good and bad about the programs on here then we could all learn from your experience. Come on people if you don't like the program then you can uninstall there is no need to slag GAOTD off for the fantastic site that they have here. Long live GAOTD!!!

Please, unload it from memory and restart your program." Does anyone have any idea what this means or what the monitor program might be? I can not run or activate the program becasue of this error. Thanks

Thanks for another great giveaway. I have liked the AVS software given away in the past, although I was disappointed when it went back to trial mode when I hadn't used it for a while. I felt like that was a little dishonest on the part of AVS.
I went to the AVS website to check out their other software and I saw their offer for ALL of their software titles for $29, with 1 year of upgrades/updates. What an awesome deal! I am going to sign up for that deal tonight. If anyone else wants to check that out, this is the url: http://www.avs4you.com/Register.aspx?type=install
There are some software titles by AVS that I would pay $29 for by themselves. To get all of them for one low price is awesome. I know there are freeware alternatives for a lot of software out there, but I don't like spending hours searching for it, trying it out, then searching for something better, trying that out, etc, etc. Thanks to GAOTD, I know that the AVS software works like it is supposed to with guaranteed results. Thanks again for everything.

Program works great but it is only limited to converting to flash. Not worth keeping because of the limited use. Still going to choose to use the program SUPER over this. BTW, I usually have to skip the comments left early in the morning because you can tell some people are lacking sleep when they write them. Gets old searching through 90+ comments just to find the 20+ that actually mean anything. I would REALLY love this site if you could filter comments by usefulness rating.

@Comment number 3 (John)

If that's how you feel, give me you address and I'll mail you ABSOLUTELY FREE a huge box of dog crap. Hey, it's free. You should be grateful. You should thank me for being such a great guy. You should serve it for dinner.

Some of this software is OK. Some of it sucks. A lot of it is about as good as free alternatives. And they aren't really giving it away free. They're hoping you'll get a whole bunch of files tied up in a proprietary format, then lose the program and have to pay to get your data back. Or maybe you just like the program and pay for it when you upgrade or reinstall your OS from scratch.

@Richard van Buren- to your first question, perhaps the same way yours did?

as far as paul's post, from where I stand it falls short of the depth I'd need.

*I* haven't yet tested cropping or the player packaging, but one 'con' not mentioned I can point to that's annoying is that you can't change the output filename without using the browse dialog. It seems a good tool, but I prefer details.

@Fubar, c'mon over to the forums and tell me what got downgraded- I still seem to have 6.8 in place, but I'm willing to go snipe hunting.

Artifacting seemed very mild to absent to me, even using DivX 5.03b1 medium-quality home theater as an input.

5.03b1 HQ HT and OpenDivX 4 looked very good, almost as good as fill-tilt HQ DVD spec MPEG-2. (all captured off 480p DirecTV S-video, for a uniform baseline)

@JKEngineer- no problem, I've slammed into that wall a *lot* myself.

Playing Ok can depend on what the program playing uses, internal or system codecs, as well as the table of header code variants that can make or break transcoding operations.

'Tis the reason I'm converting other formats with this program in stages, from easy to impossible before time runs out to comment.

I really have no use for flash, it's the 'back end' routines I'm testing.

I haven't tried some of the more usual non DivX formats, but I'm amazed to say this converted even the oddball OpenDivX 4 I tossed at it, without losing the sound.

I'm impressed.

See ya in the forums.

"I wonder how post #56 (Sean) came through moderation without editing; I find it insulting, unnecessary rude and threatening!"

Did you think that he literally meant that he would kick somebody "in the jewels"? That's the only way that it would be "insulting" or "threatening". I actually found his statement amusing. The moderator's comment that it contains "personal attacks" is also unfounded, as he did not direct his statement towards anyone in particular.

"not all of GOTD’s visitors are native English speakers! Please keep that in mind!"

And how, exactly, was he insulting people who aren't "native English speakers"? I missed it somewhere between the first and last words.

I wonder how post #56 (Sean) came through moderation without editing; I find it insulting, unnecessary rude and threatening!

Sean, developers expect critism or comments regarding their software; okay... sometimes it could have been brought a bit more civilized, but... every bird sings as it was thaught to sing, and not all of GOTD's visitors are native English speakers! Please keep that in mind! Since your own post isn't contributing to the review of the program and information for the other users, I'd advise you to follow your own advise and don't post.

As for the software: Poster #38 (Paul) has posted quite a review, with major pro's and minor con's; which I think should be sufficient for us to decide whether we download it or not. Speaking for myself: Being adversed to Flash because of its many security issues I will pass, but those who think otherwise it will serve very well IMO.

Nevertheless I thank GOTD for bringing it to us!

@85-
Thanks goodgotd. I was not aware of gspot. I downloaded and ran it against the two avi (related) files. It tells me that the video codec is CRAM or Microsoft Video 1 and that it is not installed. That sounds a little unbelievable and both videos play smoothly in every other player that I have tried.
I don't want to drown this page in this problem. I will look at it some more and if I still am having trouble with either contact the vendor or post in the forums.
I appreciate your insight.

If I can get the program to work, I really like its capabilities!

hrm. the divx medium quality clip I converted is reasonably intact, so I think there may be some optimism for video remaker. more testind when I get back from town.

@JKEngineer, what do you use for encoder? try tossing that avi at gspot and see if it's got an odd structure, maybe?

@Jon Yarbor- Super ain't a cure-all, it gives crappy resuls as well as good ones. It played the converted flv badly.

I don't know if it has been stated or not (probably after a long day).

the FreeWare Program SUPER © will convert anything to .flv (flash video) as well as any other needed file type with different codex and the such. you don't need a program like this unless like its stating: adding a watermark, small flash effects, and the such to it. I suggest using SUPER ©.

Note: you have to fight to download it off their website.
Look past all of the junk about not buying any paid software, good luck... :D

"I agree about the infantile whiny posts complaining about the quality of the software on this website. It makes you sound like Cartman screaming at his mother because he doesn’t like the green sprinkles on the ice cream she gave him."

"I must suggest the negative critics not to step in!"

Did you two see comment #13? You know, the one written by the developer? Here it is, because I want my post to be self-contained:

"We’re open to your feedback.
What added features would you like to see in this program?"

They're actually encouraging feedback, both positive and negative, believe it or not. If anybody needs to know what needs improvement, it's them. And here is where they get that feedback. Also, several people(including me) make the decision to download or not to download these utilities based on the comments. If they only see the positives, they get a skewed impression of the program and can end up downloading something that they don't want, or, worse yet, something harmful to their computer. Here's a hypothetical situation:

Some company offers a really easy-to-use music visualization creator, which can also play songs, visualize them, and export the visualization as a screensaver. However, several features are bugged, and, when run, it erases all saved data in the default browser and switches the homepage to the developer's site. If nobody says anything about that glaring flaw and only gushes about how it's cool and free, how many people's browsers will get screwed?

My point is the same as niteraven's: Negative feedback is as important, if not more so, than positive feedback. I find it amusing that the developer hasn't said anything about people's negative opinions, but you have. Is it your software? No. Why are you so sensitive about it, then?

@76 -
Follow up. I converted again using a different profile and had the same awful result. Have also discovered that the player built into the program does this, so I guess it's not the converter, but the program's ability to read a perfectly fine avi file. The player does this to some derived avi files (reduced size e.g.) Very confusing.

I would like this to work, but am stymied.

Thoughts anyone?

Hello All, it works well. I tested a MOV and got an FLV 40% smaller ("best quality" setting, went from 50k to 30k in under 2 minutes. ) and it looks just as nice.

The crop feature is a plus.

No clue why we see so many bleaters on one product, this is a useful gift.

Installed, and seemed ok. I like that it gives free rein to setting the output size (pixels) which the free Riva does not. HOWEVER - I generated an flv from an avi file which was made as a screen recording --powerpoint and voice. When I play it back the video background which should be white, flashes black to white to black repeatedly. I also get a pop-up that the player has to be updated (when using the html page). I will try a few more times, but if that's the way it's going to work, it will be useless.

Great comment, Thanks. It shouldn't be a surprise that you witnessed a lot of artifacting converting a DivX file. It's highly compressed to begin with and I won't even consider trying DivX conversion with our Hard Boxes let alone a software suite. Always remember to start with the RAW or (AVI, WMV, ectera) largest original format and codec possible to get the best results. To get the best resolution possible if you have to absolutely convert a DivX file use a smaller setting not the "Maximum", your in essence just blowing up (enlarging) the imperfections in the original file. Hope this helps.

i agree that rude, pointless complaints are unecessary. but, a negative comment/criticism can be really helpful. there is a huge difference between the two.

in today's comments, the only unecessary, pointless and rude comments have been from the people complaining about complainers. i don't see one complaint about today's software that did not also include a reason, which is what we(and the software company) want.

that is why there is a comments section, what would be the point if it was only a place to say thank you?

that being said, thank you gaotd for all the offers, whether i choose to download or not.

The software works well, it's fairly fast on my machine (AMD Athlon 3000 + 64-bit (1.8Ghz) and 1.0GB RAM) and didn't take 512MB of RAM like some people have experienced.

Unlike the freeware suggested by the author of post #5, this doesn't have a multitude of links to subscribe to an e-mail list on everything you see. But that application suggested IS a decent solution for people to consider, from my using experience anyway.

Thanks, GAOTD! Nice app. I like it so far.

Just wanted to say that since you're given a serial number for registration, after installing & getting the SN, save the SN to a text file, delete the app, then go to app's homesite & download from there, install, and use the SN to activate it.

Confirmed, worked just fine for me, ++however++ since the app (whether the GAOTD vers or homesite's vers) goes online to validate the SN, it may not work in the future (eg, after today), unlike some other apps you'll get from GAOTD where you can file away the SN & keep the non-GAOTD installer for later use. Also, since it goes online to activate the SN, you probably can't use it on a pc not connected to the Internet. (Doesn't appear to auto-create any sort of .key or .reg file after registering, tho I haven't checked the registry.)

Uninstalling: also be sure to uninstall the AVS app called something like "AVS Software Navigatior." Don't need it for anything, as far as I can tell, unless you want to buy their apps.

So unless your going to give us some useful information, please move along.

That being said, I HTH: AVS has put out good software before. Unfortunately it seems they've flopped with this one. Many good options available but bad implementation. Another good, equally useful (and free) software is Free Video to Flash Converter. Check it out too.
