Have used AVG, free version and professional version, for years. The ultimate version would be great to have so I would be able to eliminate a few of the other utilities on my pc. Super protection but can't afford it at this time.

WOW! Finally the GOTD team is giving away an anti malware program! My computer has been EXTREMELY infected by viruses, and I just couldn't find a free software to kill them. Its been getting worse and worse, and I'm worried hackers might get in. Really hoping I win 'cause that would probably be the best day of my life!

Use the free version of malwarebytes anti-malware to nuke the viruses. Then install something like avast free antivirus to take care of the active monitoring.

Hey guys, especially one that said using since that 1980's come on!!! No body wants to hear your BS story about ur disability, u deserve it bla bla bla how about some honesty!!! Sure, I would like to demo this product.anyone that is capable of having any market share in a free AV world is interesting. I might be the last to win though as I have installed approx 1000 avg free utilities in the past 10 years and while it started out great it has moved into Norton area ie mem hog, false positives, disrupting certified installs corrupting updates, all of which have been very much proven in my mind IRL and online. That's not to say I'm not still willing to give free a chance though. Good luck to all

I have used AVG Free for a half dozen years or so and put it on most of the PC;s I set up for friends and family. The changes in the last couple years have made it less palatable - the frequent pop-ups and forced reboots for updates are troublesome.

I would like to give AVG Ultimate a try.

I used Tune Up before they were bought by AVG, tried their "new" AVG tune up and it was garbage compared to preverious instalments, and i switched to Ashampoo Winoptimizer thats keeps going better and better, as for antivirus there are other free alternatives.

Andin my country they say if something is for everything its for nothing, so i dont belive in multi programs.

Other commenters say you cannot remove AVG from your start menu (wonder if they use WinPatrol which usually handles things like this handily). And that you cannot limit the ads to NEVER unless you win the full PRO edition.

So I am trusting the community and for those two reasons will not be downloading even the trial. Thanks anyway.

there too much hype from people that perhaps use such programs as they are so called "PRIVACY PROTECTORS OR VIRUS PROTECTORS" SIMPLY THAT ARE PROGRAMS THAT SCAN YOUR COMPUTER COLLECTING INFORMATION FROM YOUR COMPUTER TO AN DATA BASE AS TO HOW YOU USE PROGRAMS , WHAT YOU WRITE ABOUT , WHAT YOU LOOK AT, AND HOW YOU MAY USE A PRODUCT, THAN THESE COMPANIES JUST " MINE THAT INFORMATION YOU SENT THEM USING THEY'RE SO CALLED PROTECTION OR VIRUS PROTECTION. SIMPLY THERE JUST NO WAY WE KNOW THAT THESE PROGRAMS ARE REALLY PROTECTING US FROM REAL VIRUS OR PROTECTING OUR DATA, OR KEEPING US FROM BEING HACKED. SO I SAY SHOW ME ! PROVE TO ME THIS PRODUCT DOES WHAT YOU SAY AND TELL ME WHAT DO YOU COLLECT ABOUT WHAT YOU FIND OR HOW I USE YOUR PRODUCT. CONVINCE ME YOU HAVE MY BEST INTERESTS AT HEART... THATS PROTECTING ME AND NOT SELLING INFORMATION ABOUT ME TO OTHERS FOR PROFIT AS AN TARGET.

Ah another "Contest of the day".

I've been using Comodo FREE for 10 years or more and it is great. You can turn off messages/ads etc. It also auto updates every day with new signatures etc.

I've tried AVG now and then and always found it not to my tastes.

I currently have AVG Pro (not Ultimate as is being given away free here). Even with my paid subscription, i constantly get ads and upgrade notices and haven't burrowed down into the guts to learn how to turn these off. Because of a problem I had that AVG didn't detect, I also downloaded the free version of Malwarebytes which found many more problems that AVG did't identify just minutes earlier and which also has a bootscan option (turned off by default). AVG is a Czech company. Sometimes I wonder if/how many of the anti-virus companies simply repackage the US-CERT (or other) government virus technologies as their own. That said, a lottery distribution seems just plain silly for GOTD.

Reply   |   Comment by phlypp  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+18)

Reply to ->phlypp,

TOTALLY AGREE.

While AVG is a well known player in this field (I was with them from day 1 until the package became very commercial and resource heavy) - a lottery system does not belong on GOTD.

Look how many responses there are to this one - none of them reviewing the code (purpose of GOTD) - but all just crying for a licence code. Keep GOTD for genuine evaluation of products.

WHAT does AVG Ultimate offer vs their free version?
For USD99, it needs to be pretty good.

I have also found that there is variation in viral detection. Using a few different anti virus checkers will reveal different results and is sometimes required to be rid of a stubborn virus.

Indeed, AVG is great and AVG Ultimate is awesome, but while getting AVG Ultimate free is a great idea you can actually buy it now from their site for £35 (Usually £69, they say)

http://www.avg.com/ppc/ww-en/protection-ultimate-vs-free?dsc=ah1&d=0.5&h2=50&ECID=ad:go:se:UK-EN-XSite-Brand-Search&gclid=CMvu38iK1c4CFcUV0wodIVALFg

Or, for increased security, search for AVG Download on Google
To me this is cheaper/better value then doing all the work that needs to be done to enter and then not even be certain you do get it
Just a thoought

Downloaded and installed without any problems. This is the first time I'm trying AVG, after uninstalling my other AV program. I've initiated the first full scan and will let you know what's happened after it's finished. The only thing I'm not too happy about is the changing of my homepage, on google chrome, to AVG web browser. After a little test, the AVG search engine seems ok. 12 month free subscription from AVG would be nice, might convince me to swap SP, but I'm satisfied with my present AV and don't mind paying another 12 month rental.

Note: "Best of all, updates are automatic. New improvements and features are automatically pushed to you when available."

Best for AVG, just what everybody needs, changes to your computer when AVG wants to do it WITHOUT telling you what the update will do.

I left AVG months ago because of their nag screens and have not regretted it.

AVG is pretty good, but they do keep bombarding you with ads even when you buy their stuff. You can disable this nonsense by going to Options > Advanced Settings > Appearance > "Set Maximum Frequency.." and setting the ad frequency to "never". There's also a way to do it with AVG Antivirus Free by deleting some folders..just Google it.

Reply   |   Comment by truthmonger  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

truthmonger,

The ads were enough to make me consider leaving AVG altogether, until the trick you mentioned was revealed to me. But this trick is no longer working. AVG now gives you the option to stop those highly annoying spam ads for "once a week" or "once a month" or "never" but only if you upgrade to PRO. The less palatable options of "more than once a day" (default, resets to this after each update I believe), "once a day" (yeah spam me daily please!) and "once every 3 days" remain. I understand the concept of "free" but don't believe "free" should automatically equal "free with obtrusive spam that literally interrupts your day several times per day." Even email ads in my inbox is less frustrating.
