Installed and registered fine but found "479 days left before subscription expires" in About. Already have Defrag Pro 4.9.1 with no expiration (which has worked satisfactorily) so uninstalled this 9.4 version and kept 4.9.1 instead. Can't blame developer for offering only a one-year license but still wish that would've been stated in the Giveaway description above.

Try different emails, my gmail came through instantly, my yahoo took a while, same license key.

- - - - -

All I ever wanted was a different approach to pre-windows boot defrag, so I'll just use an older free version for that - I never run the Windows interface except to turn on boot defrag.

Auslogics disabled a lot of previously free features with the arrival of DiscDefrag version 9. One of the best of these was "defrag and optimise". Presumably the same will be true of the version on offer today after the trial period. Also, as noted elsewhere, Malwarebytes flags the program. Fortunately a portable version 8 is still available free and overcomes both issues.

Reply   |   Comment by Catweazle  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+19)

If you choose to download and run the portable version, do not update it! If you do then it will update to the crippled version 9.

Excellent, well-designed software. It has every feature you need to maintain a defragging schedule which works for you. I used it happily for years until I bought a laptop with an SSD, which of course should never be defragged.

I have a 500GB Solid State Drive on my notebook computer..... So 2 questions please?
1) Is this Defrag okay for SSD?
2) If it is okay for SSD, then is it effective on an SSD?
Many thanks
Paul

Reply   |   Comment by Paul S  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-7)

Paul S,

1)
Appearance of the file system from the OS does not match the consistency of SSD flash management.
500GB that recent SSDs.
it will probably not be as effective as older SSDs.

2)
It doesn't make much sense, if anything, it triggers garbage collection on SSDs.
For the above reasons.

SSD with millions of files stored could be an effective refresher against bit-rotting.

Reply   |   Comment by ArkSKnow  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-5)

Paul S, No, it is not recommended for SSD, unless you want to shorten its life span and it is not effective on SSD. SSD structure of data pockets is different of the regular HD and you may even destroy the SSD if it is over 50% full.

Reply   |   Comment by John2  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+19)

Paul S, Defragmentation reorders the blocks of data sequentially and attempts to restore your hard drive's original performance. What about SSDs—do they benefit from defragmentation? The simple answer is no. The entire basis of fragmented data relies on the fact that your storage device uses moving parts to access data

While SSDs become fragmented just the same as a mechanical drive, it makes no difference to the SSD if the data is all in one place or scattered around various locations on the drive. The “seek time” is virtually unaffected by this. So defragmenting an SSD would make just about zero difference to your SSD performance.

Reply   |   Comment by Chuck  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+19)

Paul S, An SSD does not have to be defragmented. It is of no use. Windows itself only performs Maintenance on all available drives. This is called trimming.

Reply   |   Comment by Erwin  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+17)

Thanks for your responses 'ArkSKnow' and 'John2'.... both very helpful and confirm what I felt I had seen somewhere!
So an SSD can't be 'cleaned' up with the likes of Ccleaner or others either to get rid of old clutter?

Reply   |   Comment by Paul S  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

"Is this Defrag okay for SSD?
If it is okay for SSD, then is it effective on an SSD?"

"So an SSD can't be 'cleaned' up with the likes of Ccleaner or others either to get rid of old clutter?"

Windows built-in drive optimization -- Tools tab in Properties -- defrags conventional hard disks & performs Trim on SSDs. Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro does similar, and optionally moves system files to the faster part of a conventional hard drive. Auslogics docs say it uses "special algorithms" on SSDs to "optimize your drive and help extend its service life", but doesn't explain what it means by that or how. Trim means zeroing out deleted blocks of data, so writing to those same blocks is faster -- unlike a conventional hard disk, new data doesn't just overwrite old, but old, deleted data has to be zeroed out 1st. Most SSDs will do this automatically regardless the OS. That said, you clean out [delete] junk same as you would on a conventional hard disk, which is more important on an SSD, because they perform optimally when roughly 1/2 the drive space [or more] is free.

One year licence. So will not install this Giveaway.
I use the free + portable old Auslogics Defrag Version 9-0-24-0.
But lately the O&O Defrag 64Bit Free Edition Version 14 seems better.

It's an excellent bit of software. Sadly, however, it's incompatible with Malwarebytes, which a less charitable soul might think is running some kind of vendetta against Auslogics!

Reply   |   Comment by Fantyparts  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+6)

Fantyparts,
Not "incompatible" but it does flag it as malware and remove it by default.
However YOU can allow it and it's directories to be allowed and not removed.
As the MalwareBytes forums say:
If you wish to continue using those programs, add them to the MBAM exclusion list and they will no longer be detected.
