I've tried six times to get the activation code but have not been sent an email for it. Not such a good system, and apparently there is nothing I can do.

Does the video part capture sound as well? For example, I need to play a PowerPoint with videos embedded into the PowerPoint. Will it capture the sounds that play on the embedded video? Thanks.

This appears to have all the same programs that Irfanview has except that Irfanview is free. Could you please explain what is different here that I should have your software?

W7, 64 bit pro. The new and old versions of the software always fail when i try to capture scroll down screenshot in my Dell and Sony Vaio laptops. I always use FF. IE and Chrome are fine but in FF it fails :( I also don't like when it starts with Windows. This shouldn't be always active.

hardgirl, There is an option in the configurations that you can uncheck the box that makes it start when windows starts. I also don't like a lot of programs starting at start up.
Click on configurations then general and down on left hand side you will see the box that is check to start when windows starts just uncheck and it will solve your problem.

I'm using Win 10 I installed without any problems and activated so far pretty easy. Only thing you have to watch for is while installing/activating you will be prompted to upgrade to pro pass on that then you will be asked to upgrade again I did that thinking this was the update that another poster had mentioned.
It wasn't it installed the Snap 9 trial version. So I went in to uninstall the whole thing but was lucky enough that the 2017 version and trial version had not installed over the 2017. I uninstalled the snap 9 version and then went back to finish the 2017 version.
I would suggest after you put activation key in all the other windows that pop up offering upgrades and this and that just close them.
After you are done with the install and activation go into configuration then click on my ashampoo and down near the bottom look for "check for newer versions online update" click on that and install that update and you are good to go.
Hope this helps some of the confusion as there is a lot of windows that pop up and this just seems to be the easiest way.
Have a great day all!

Do NOT install if you have a previous version. Many functions are disabled to entice you to buy version 9.
This is not usually their way but shame on Ashampoo for doing that this time. I have purchased some of their products following GOTD testing but I will not anymore because of this bad practice. Customers purpose is to test the features of programs offered here. If features are blocked then we are wasting our time.

Well. I have just run version 7. The new install did not affect the functionality of the previous version, unlike what another reviewer said. However, my V. 7 is paid for and this may make a difference.
The only added benefit I see is the ability to pause a recording.

Photographer, I have a paid version of Snap 8. Installing Snap 2017 changed nothing in my Snap 8. Both work well. Not at the same time, of course.

Just a quick question, what's difference between today's giveaway of Ashampoo Snap 2017 (listed at $49.99) and the free version of Snap 2017 that has been offered by Ashampoo via https://www.ashampoo_com/en/usd/fdl for some time now?

Just a Very Concerned User,

"Just a quick question, what's difference between today's giveaway of Ashampoo Snap 2017 (listed at $49.99) and the free version of Snap 2017 "

I can't say what might have been in an earlier free version compared to this GOTD, but if you follow the links today they both lead to the same detail page - ashampoo[.]com/en/usd/pde/1824/multimedia-software/Ashampoo-Snap-2017

[The link as posted didn't work -- typing what's shown into F/Fox brings up Google search results -- one of those results was to your link on F/Book -- following that link brought up a list of free Ashampoo apps -- clicking on Snap 2017 brings up the same page(s) linked up top on today's GOTD page.]

Note: While I didn't see a comparison between the full version & the GOTD, you can open the Detail page for both in separate, side-by-side browser windows. Based solely on my very fallible memory, Snap 9 started out higher in price than earlier versions, so I haven't upgraded from 8, so I can't say what OCR engine they use etc. that might account for it's higher price.

@ Wolfe

I'm sorry, i posted the link with an "_" instead of the "." [I will add brackets next time]

@ mike

Thanks for the feedback.

I posted my findings earlier, but it seems it was removed, although I am not sure why. I am only trying to better understand this offer and why it is maybe valued at $49.99.

The GOTD offered installer is 52.3 MB and is version 1.0.0.0 and dated Apr 25, 2016, 09:46:07.
The direct download from Ashampoo installer is 49.9 MB and is version 1.0.1.0 and dated May 27, 2016, 18:03:58.

Thanks again GOTD, but I think I will stick with the newer version offered directly from Ashampoo.

I use screenpresso and I'm generally happy with it. But I always consider there can be something better. With the comments about functionality being limited, I clicked on the Snap 9 info button, didn't see any sort of feature comparison with the older versions (since some say this is Snap 7). Then I decided to look at the screen shots they have posted on their site. I was aghast! At first, I thought maybe they didn't post screen shots at all, just advertisements. Is that really what the user interface looks like? The longer I looked at them, I began to believe that maybe that was indeed the interface. All the icons at the edges, a big ad like menu in the center? I don't even want to install it if that's true.

Reply   |   Comment by Neil  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-7)

Neil, what you see in those pictures are indeed screenshots with the user interface AROUND it, the "add like menu" is actually the screenshot of that add. You will have a little menu bar in the right hand top of your desktop (hidden, just showing a small blue bar to unhide it) and after you took a screenshot (or video) you get into the edit window where you can do all sorts of things.
screenshot from gaotd site in Snap 9 (test version, normally I have 8 but currently deciding on upgrading) https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=F25D45C81EB9E9F5&id=F25D45C81EB9E9F5%216851&parId=F25D45C81EB9E9F5%216539&o=OneUp

Mavadelo, thanks. I couldn't see your screenshot though...it takes me to onedrive and then makes me wait a few seconds and shows me an empty folder. But never mind, if that's even remotely the interface I see on their screenshots (all those icons around the center), I'll pass.

Reply   |   Comment by Neil  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-3)

Neil, I guess I effed up with the url :) https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=F25D45C81EB9E9F5!6851&authkey=!AMduTN49noEpz9w&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPG
Those screenshots by ashampoo show all the icons unhidden, the start interface is much cleaner. I would have my doubts as well if the interface would look that cluttered from the getgo :)

Neil,

" Then I decided to look at the screen shots they have posted on their site. I was aghast! At first, I thought maybe they didn't post screen shots at all, just advertisements."

Looking at the screenshots, they show Snap used to capture ads on their web site etc. -- e.g. if you open/enlarge the screen shot of the "Snapshot Editor", you can see the selection border around an image of an ad that was captured. That background in the screen shot I assume is their desktop wallpaper, as Snap's tools tend to be floating toolbars & such, as you can see in their image.

Will it work on WinXP-PRO-SP3?

Reply   |   Comment by WinXP?  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-14)

WinXP?,

"Will it work on WinXP-PRO-SP3?"

XP isn't listed with the requirements on Ashampoo's site -- if it were they might have to support their products on XP when/if there was a problem, so that's understandable. Best bet IMHO is to Google, if you didn't just want to try it yourself, though you might have to go through many pages of results to find someone who's actually used Snap 2017 or 9 on XP. I did a *quick* Google search just now, & Major Geeks has the Snap 9 trial with XP listed.

Nissepelle,

Generally if you ever use an email address to register or activate an Ashampoo app, they will automatically set you up with an account, where all of your software keys are stored if you later need one. Sounds like that's what's happening to you. Probably the easiest route is to either use another email address, or have them email your password or a password reset to you.

Simply follow the link above on today's GOTD page to the Ashampoo site, click to log in [upper right], & click "Forgot Password".

I, too had many great experiences with Ashampoo products running in Windows XP, It is a shame that they chose not to support XP anymore. Otherwise I would have been happy to pay for this new version.

Reply   |   Comment by Paul  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-7)

Indeed a shame, I too happily run XP, as millions of others do.
Perhaps the great Ashampoo (providing great software indeed) will tell us of a work around so we can install it on an XP machine?
That would be super.

Reply   |   Comment by WinXP?  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-8)

Paul, perhaps timeto get with the modern times and get a supported OS. XP is NOT a save system anymore and NOT supported by MS. Therefor many developers have stopped or are in the process of stopping support for xp. You are using a 13 year old system and soon this system will be completely obsolete

Reply   |   Comment by Mavadelo  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-7)

Paul,

Maybe it'll run on XP, & maybe it won't.

Problem from Ashampoo's standpoint is if they say they support XP, & then someone running XP has a problem, by rights they should try & help get things working. Those problems can be completely beyond their control, & possibly unsolvable, with a version of Windows that's no longer supported, & is actually very actively discouraged by Microsoft, e.g. some of Microsoft's software development tools spit out code that explicitly won't work on XP.

Reply   |   Comment by mike  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Mavadelo,
Certain functions were introduced into Windows 7 that were not available in XP.
If the developer uses any of these functions then the program will not work in older versions of the OS.
It is nothing to do with the developer stopping support of XP!

For instance, supposing I try to do something in my source code, often this will go directly to a function within the OS to carry it out.
It can only carry it out if the function is supported in that version of the OS.

Now, if in my source code, I try to do something different but this time not available in the older version of the OS then it it will not run in that version.

Never when I compile my source code into a program do I have to comply for individual versions of the operating system; just compile and if the functions are available in the old OS then it will run.

All this mumbo-jumbo about especially supporting XP is a load of nonsense, but I suppose it does help Microsoft to sell more of their operating systems, often unnecessarily.

Reply   |   Comment by Tata  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-4)

Tata, XP has officialy reached it's end of life, MS is no longer supporting XP or making updates for it (with a few exceptions I believe) hence developers are stopping to make sure it works on XP as the system is obsolete. Not taking in account the changes made when windows 7 was introduced is stopping support for that system, it is not rocket sience to understand that

Reply   |   Comment by Mavadelo  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-3)

After the debacle of the recent Mirillis Action! Giveaway, where users found their serial number blacklisted because it had been made public (by Mirillis in their own readme file!), and Mirillis were unwilling to resolve it, I'm very grateful to Ashampoo and GiveAwayoftheDay for today's offering, which does pretty much the same job. Nice one.

Snap 2017 seemed to install ok on windows 10 but it would not do a snap of a scrolling window in firefox? I am used to using snap 7 where it worked fine. Maybe it was me not reading all the help windows that pop up but I did use the same technique as before. Of coarse it overwrote snap 7 so I lost that fuctionality. Fortunately I had a restore point and backups so I restored snap 7 and will stick with that this time. Many thanks.

I have been a satisfied paid user of previous versions of Ashampoo Snap software for many years but the latest versions (including Snap 2017) no longer support Windows Vista. I therefore cannot continue to use the software as my current version (Snap 7) now crashes when I start it.

Reply   |   Comment by George  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-3)

George, I just loaded Snap 7 and it still works fine on my 32-Bit Vista Home Premium SP2. Also have Evga (Nvidea) graphics card, Avast! antivirus. I rarely use Snap 7 because it takes 24 MB of memory just sitting there in case I need to use it. It doesn't seem like a lot, but when Opera has 14 tasks running that range from 31 MB to almost 170 MB (with only 4 tabs open!), I don't want to waste any more memory than necessary. That said, I think Snap is the best of the screen capture programs. I like how it works and actually use many of the options it offers. It never worked for me to capture scrolling regions in Firefox, but it's nice for everything else. I also like Monosnap but it takes MUCH more memory so I only use that one at work.

Skip past the offers to sell you more of Ashampoo products. These only appear the first time use it would seem.

Ashampoo Snap 2017 sits nicely in the System Tray and has a shed load of options to configure it. It's nice to see so many choices, almost as many as my tool of choice: SnagIt.

Reply   |   Comment by Powder_Skier  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Powder_Skier, I had the same question. I never heard of the 2017 version, they have Snap 7,8,9... so I installed the giveaway.
To be honest, it looks like they created this version specifically for the giveaway - many of the options in the editing menu are disabled and they offer you to buy a license for Snap 9 to get those working.
If you already have a full version of Snap - don't bother with this one.

Otherwise - I love my Snap (bought license) and would gladly recommend it for screen capturing and image editing. They also have a pretty good support team that responded quickly and effectively when I reported issues. They even added a feature that I asked for.
