Have to say I'm unimpressed, I was hoping for something a little more then a static image(it's just the bridge, nothing more). Some of the "around" screen savers actually travel to some degree. This is just the bridge. Thumbs down for this one guys. Very disappointed.

I would love to know how to take a walk across the bridge to see the actual city. All I see is the city... the different times of day, and rain and sun. It might be more interesting if I could see the actual city. The minute I click on anything, the screen saver vanishes. Someone want to give me a hint here before I delete the program. I visited NYC when I was a lot younger, and it could be interesting to look back in time, because I doubt I will get back to there again, not with my life style of today. Thanks people.

I like it, it's nice, but..what on Earth is with that "lazy country afternoon" music doing in the Big City? ;-) For the programmers, I would definitely put different music in there, something appropriate for the Big Apple. Win 7, 64-bit, plays fine.

@papin..

Do you REALLY have to nag us on power consumption? Who are you? Our mama's..? And these 'saved' kWh (gWh)? What would you suggest we use them on? Another five minutes to darken toast? Maybe extra time to dry our hair? You know you can't save power consumption, you can only use it (no matter how much). Yes, I suppose it would save 4.5 to 40.5 billions (of whatever currency) but individually we're talking a little over 14¢ a day (at your quoted $50.00 year).. so these 220 million computer users should waive using a screen saver so that the military or even worse, politicians might use the extra saved power to see their ugly mugs on the boob tube for an extra 30 seconds a year.. No thanks, I'll just cut my newspaper subscription to week-ends, save more than 14¢ a day AND help conserve the natural environment. But don't worry, I got a good chuckle out of your post.

I can't say anything good about "Astro Gemini Software"; their ethics are questionable, and their screensavers are second rate compared to other screensavers vendors who charge the same or less for better quality. I haven't downloaded or installed todays giveaway and I will always give "Astro Gemini Software" a thumbs down based on their questionable character and integrity.

And though I have not downloaded todays giveaway I did check it out; it is supposed to be of New York in the late eighteen hundreds (late nineteenth century)yet the night time views show New York lit up fairly brightly. Gas lamps where employed on the Brooklyn Bridge and throughout NYC when the bridge was opened in 1883, but electricity was still very primitive, so I don't see how the city could have been this bright even up to the early nineteen hundreds. Just think if your going to creat something it should be accurate to the time period you say it's for.

Thumbs down.

I personally enjoy Astro Gemini screensavers and I love their screensaver manasger which lets you select screensavers you want to run and rotates them for you at desired intervals. I run screensavers all the time on a pc which does Distributed Computing tasks (BOINC) while I'm not using it.

Many of us still use screensavers. If nothing more then to get some eye candy going while we're away from our computers.

Astro Gemini has some cute screen savers, and this is one of them. It installed and ran perfectly on a seven year old single core processor Windows 7 32bit machine with 1gb of ram.

There are some things I'm not a big fan of in this screen saver though, and that's primarily the sound effects. It sounds really low quality which ruins it. Secondly, it looks like there's only one screen resolution available, and that's "low". The city itself is rather cartoony, but that's alright. (Hence the cute remark.)

I don't think I'd ever purchase this screensaver. So thankfully I got it for free. Overall, I'd give this a four out of ten. Nothing special, so you won't lose out by not installing.

Seriously I'm not a person with hateful intentions. I don't see a reason unless you actually "live" in NY to really want to wake up and see NY on a 24/7 basis on your computer.

I for one enjoy screensavers and backgrounds and change them frequently. However, I didn't care for this one and will skip it today. I would love to find some transparent screensavers. (Anyone have any ideas where I might find some?)
Thanks GOTD.

I always ignore these screensavers but I wonder if it has been mentioned that this screensaver has been taken from a game, the quite popular macth 3 Around the World in 80 Days. In fact, Astro Gemini is using more than one of the scenes - which were designed as optional screen savers - from that game as screensavers in it's Around the World Series. Now maybe they are the same developers that made that game selling screen savers under a different guise, or they have permission, or have permission to use these because they, or he/she, is has permission being the original artist. Or maybe even they are the ones who have been stolen from in the 1st place. But I'd feel a little uneasy about giving them money unless I knew the answer to this. They may be the designers of many games, or all of their materials may be cribbed from somewhere else. If this has been answered before to people's satisfaction, then I apologize.

#3:
Screensavers deserve thumbs down because:

- Watching a screensaver means you've got nothing to do in your life

- It's a huge waste of resources (uranium, carbon, water, forest, ...) to produce electricity just to run such dumb software. Screensavers are dumb by nature, because they uselessly require more computer resources (CPU, RAM, I/O streams, ...), they are ugly (watching other people's screensavers could make you blind) --- and have no meaning in human life.

- Nowadays, desktop computers can turn off the screen when idle, so there's no reason whatsoever to run a screensaver.

- Then, screensavers take disk space; more files to defragment; more files to backup. This adds up time to maintain a computer ---and more electricity to waste.

Okay, I understand there are some countries (like the ones that refuse to sign the Kyoto protocol) where people don't mind paying high electricity bills, where people don't care about ecology issues. I understand that, wherever they live, you'll find people producing screensavers, and other using them. Counterproductive? Yes, but not only.

Doing the maths (just for the fun):
There are more than 1 billion computers in use in the world. If only 1% run a screensaver for 10 mn every day, that would be 500 millions hours per year (assuming 300 days/year). If each computer uses 90 W while running the screensaver, then the total energy consumption is 45,000 GWh. If the cost per kWh is 10 cents, then the whole bill is 4.5 billion dollars or euros, or whatever. These figures are very conservative; for a less conservative approach, the total is up to 40.5 billions (of whatever currency).
In the US, where there are about 220 million computers, it's said you can save $50 a year by putting your computer on sleep. Not much money though, explaining why screensavers are so successful. After all, who there needs to save $50 ?

Noticing the negatives vote on these screen saver programs leads me to think such a vote is telling GAOTH this type isn't what its readership enjoys, rather than a vote for the program.

I totally agree with Pro E Pro above. It is a nice piece of software which is FREE. If you don't like screen savers, then just don't install them. To the professional grumblers I say this - please don't make unjustified negative comments and spoil it for the rest of us who appreciate Astro Gemini generosity and the perfectly reasonable promotion of their software

The graphics are good but I would put a different landmark in, or do some traveling. Right now it's just the base of a bridge in any city.

Installed easily on my Win 7 x64 machine. As always with the screensavers from this nice company, the graphics are very nice, the weather/time-of-day changes are neat, and the on-screen clock is very handy. Sure - no one *needs* a screensaver any more, but watching a pleasant one like this now and then can be very relaxing and simply fun. Thanks very much once again, GAOTD and AstroGemini for another "keeper!"

First comment, with almost 100 votes in. I'll be interested in seeing why the votes are so negative - I think their programmers do a great job, and they have some really high caliber talent in their design and art department. Astro Gemini has been very generous to GAOTD with their screensavers in the past, and I've found them to install easily, give lots of options, and work well for what they are intended to do. Thanks again for sharing your creative output with the community.
