i love gotd for these comments. :-)
i didn't know about pspad's diff feature. will try. currently i use pspad and eitpadlite for search and replace modes that they do better than crimson editor.
the worst about pspad is the gui. icons aren't "right". cannot switch to kerned font. i googled for better fixed-spacing serif fonts, but never found any good ones.

i'd recommend crimson editor for the beginning user of text editors. it has most of the features that one would "drool" for. almost everything in the menus or keyboard command work with little complication. ce does have problems. no delete icon in the toolbars. ui not very customizable. manipulating macros is cumbersome. regexp and 'normal' replace is constrained. dragging between panes or lines is buggy. spellcheck "view" is a marking function; it has no suggestion or replace. (which is ok, imo).
it loads quickly, but has trouble with files at about 500kB (on 512MB computer). the project "tree" isn't easily rearranged. (i'm still looking for an xml folding editor just to edit ce's prj files :-) )
all that sounds bad, but realize that i've described (most?) its weaknesses. everything else is good.
there are sooo mannny text editors. it takes awhile to find one you like. begin googling acf. and google web for reviews. i found an ambitious wiki devoted to editors, but can't find the url now...

I was the one who classified it as bad first in regards to comment #1. I already used AptEdit before and i know this program, so i know it isn't needed, necessary or really worth more then the time to download it in my opinion. I thin it should have more functionality if it wishes to excel in this category.

Take a look at the running memory - I found this program at idle to take 7MB, vs. my regular text editor, which runs at 2MB. I'm going to look at Notepad++!

I'am the author of AptEdit. Thanks for your comments.
In last post, AptEdit would automatically check for the update when started. It caused many Giveaway users lost their registration information. Another, AptEdit has a fatal bug it caused the program crashed.
In this post, I delete the autoupdate function, fix some bugs, and adjust toolbars. Now AptEdit runs OK.

PSPad -- which I found in the comments the last time this program was posted -- is awesome -- free, doesn't require activation, has diff functionality built-in (no need for a separate program). Native FTP to work on sites remotely. Can install on any USB drive. Etc. Etc.

#26 and #29 very many thanks I will try those, I have thumbed up your comments! X

I do feel that the program has something very wrong with its programming if it will not uninstall and the one I installed the first time it was offered recently is seemingly all over my PC with the amount of messages I get - whatever you do, don't upgrade this and if it starts one of its automatic upgrades as mine did, stop it immediately. The amount of messages I get daily regarding this program "missing files" (after me trying to uninstall) and also a message along the lines of "please pay for the software - it's NOT freeware, you know!" is just too much!!

Very nice program. GUI is very easy to get used to and automatically associates it with file extensions if you want. Also installed AptDiff for comparing files. I love the syntax highlighter and hex editor.

Another alternative is HxD. It's one of the best hex editors I've used and it's free.

#18 I will concur with you re OpenOffice, the most user-unfriendly office suite I've ever worked with. Even tho' it will cost me a quarter of my salary, darn these exchange rates, MS Office will be purchased asap. As to the speed, if that is your complaint, what about all the apps Windows preload while you sit and wait for your machine to boot - just in case you might use one of them in the next 10 years?

But I don't agree that all Open Source is bad. I use some, including Thunderbird, with which I am very pleased.

I don't do any hex editing and find Notepad++ sufficient for all my web design needs.

I am behind a corporate firewall. Could this be the problem?

I use several editors because they all have a certain feature that is missing or poorly implemented in the others. This will give me a hex editor and default IE html editor. My other ones don't have that. I don't like that it tries to call home every open and close without asking me first. I just block it with my firewall.

Looks lik a pretty good editor, but reviewing the features, I think I'll stick with PSPad, another completely free editor that has most or all of these features. Here is the link: http://www.pspad.com. Nice one GOTD, but I'll stick with PSPad for now.

@Merril

You can try a free program called regseeker. It searches the registry for old/invalid entries. It will only delete the ones you select and it makes a backup. It also has a search function where you can type in the program name and try to find and remove the entries that a program left behind. Just be careful about what you delete and make a restore point before you start.

This is my first time to post however I read your comments daily and go by them rather to download from here or not. I appreciate all your comments as they have helped so much. Other then that I just like reading them some are quiet funny. Anyways the html software I used is Page Breeze. Its simple to use and no nag screens or problems. I am in hopes that GOTD will allow my post. You have all helped me and now I would like to return that help. Here is the link http://www.pagebreeze.com/
License and Distribution of PageBreeze Free HTML Editor

PageBreeze Free HTML Editor is completely free for personal, not-for-profit, or educational use. There are no limitations, no nag screens, no required registration, and the software will never expire . If you use PageBreeze in your job, or in a for-profit business for non-evaluation purposes, you must obtain an inexpensive license for PageBreeze Professional , which includes several more advanced features.

A very nice little editor. 8 out of 10. However, it appears to be missing bookmarking and background color highlighting which is a must for me.

>its faster and free…also open source…

So what if its open source?! You know "open source" is not feature. Also, of course its faster when it lacks 98% options of this program. I recently had problems with OE, I messed with some crappy program which destroyed my OE databases and I installed Thunderbird to try it. They say all over the net its faster, better, open source. You know what? Its pathetic compared to OE and they are comparing it with Outlook, I mean you must be crazy to compare it with outlook. Same happened to me when I opened OpenOffice Word. Its faster, better, open source, and its closer to WordPad than to MS Word 2007. I really hate Microsoft monopolistic behaviour but lets be realistic sometimes.

I would not normally vehemently say that a program is wholly poor but after downloading the AptEdit 3.7.2 from this site when it was last offered (within the last 5-6 weeks?) I'm afraid that is my opinion.

As a HEX Editor it was great - until one day it tried to update itself automatically and my registration was lost, coming up with constant reminders to pay for it even when the application was not open. So I went into Control Panel and uninstalled - only it did not uninstall and the registration reminders were replaced, every time I try to view a 'Read Me' file, with 'corrupt' messages each bearing the AptEdit orange and black logo that I am now truly sick of seeing!! Even Cleanse Uninstaller which usually works fab can not rid my computer of this terrible program and the rigmarole of having corrupt messages AND "pay for this software" messages each time I want to view a Read Me is just too much.

This is the one piece of software from this site that I have nothing good to say about - install it with caution as I am sick of the sight of the constant logos and messages that it has created on my PC despite having attempted to rid my whole computer of anything to do with it on 3 occasions.

I have been using notepad++ for years, and it looks like I am not going to be changing now! While AptEdit looks good enough, it's also missing some features that I require. For example, plugin support seems pretty scarce or non-existent, while the user interface looks like it's using Windows 98 themes in XP. There is not auto-completion feature, and no spell checking (useful for web design). I am not trying to put this software down; I am just saying that other free software exists which does the same job even better. I also noticed that OS support is rather limited in AptEdit, as it only supports Windows 2000 and newer. In short, this software is impressive enough on its own, but when compared to alternatives, it leaves a lot to be desired.

I use Notepad++ already. Does anyone have a comparison of Notepad++ versus AptEdit?

I don't do HEX editing at all, but as a replacement notepad and file editor (for PHP, HTML etc), is it worth moving over to AptEdit?

A fine prog. Installed, activated and running - no probs [XP]. Worth downloading and installing [thanks GOTD and Brother Technology] but, a very minor update from just a month ago? If you still have last month's version installed and it's running OK then I don't see the need to download this latest version and possibly suffer problems - 'if it ain't broke then don't fix it' springs to mind.

Not bad but lacking many needs. Yesterday was a real looser. Good program but most of it has to be bought to be worth anything at all. free that one was over priced.

I will look some more in this one. So far it does not apear to be of much valus to the average user.

One of the best Giveaways recently. Compact footprint, very fast, well designed menu structure, especially for techies. No fluff. Many functions combined usually not found in one program. Like the ASCII/EBCDIC translation, various default encodings, FTP Read/Write & accounts functions. Has built-in ASCII table, syntax settings for many popular coding formats, quick DOS shell & Windows Explorer. Exportable config settings are nice touch.

Will probably be my default editor for years to come.
