I have a Win10 system which would not boot up, after a Windows update and then a power blip. Of course, it has all my GAOTD software on it. When I tried to do a restore, it said there were no restore points, even though I had created on just days before. Does anyone know if there is a way to re-install Windows over that existing data, without overlaying the existing registry? I thought that a program like AOMEI PA or one of their other programs might be able to help.
Tnx

Rich Urmann, Okay I guess you tried using a Windows Recovery CD or DVD and then doing a System Restore to a point in time before you had this problem, only to discover all your restore points gone. You can also try using the Recovery Environment to repair Windows - but if that doesn't work then I think there is an option to do a "repair install" of Windows. To do that, you'll need to Google around and find the link to Microsoft's site where you can download the appropriate version of Windows 10, 32-bit or more likely, the 64-bit version depending on your system. Then you can use a bootable USB stick to load that on and try to reinstall windows. For future reference a neat program called "Tweaking.com Windows Repair" will make a copy of the Windows Registry as scheduled, say, every time you do a fresh boot. Then if this condition happens again there's a convenient DOS batch file that will restore a healthy version of the Registry, and if that boots up and gets you back into Windows, you're all set.

For friends and family, I've done a lot of cloning disks to SSD, using different (free or paid) cloning/partitioning/backup software. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not, mostly due to file system errors, or resulting in unbootable PC's. Anyways unreliable. Aomei PA (standard) is the ONLY ONE that ALWAYS worked perfectly. For me, it' s definitively a MUST HAVE program !

Have used AOMEI products for several years now, and very pleased with the programs ease-of-use and simple to follow directions. A keeper.

Does this program create a UEFI-based bootable disk?

Stoi4o, Hopefully this answers the question.

"Does this program create a UEFI-based bootable disk?"

Yes. Any current software that creates a bootable USB stick will. Not every bootable USB stick will work on every device however, so do test before you have to rely on one.

Note: the link that DJ kindly posted contradicts the main feature page for AOMEI PAP 8.2 -- disk-partition[.]com/feature.html . On the PAP feature page, it says you do not have to install the Windows kit. A bootable USB stick or CD/DVD boots to [starts] a mini version of Windows called WinPE. Microsoft doesn't allow software companies to distribute WinPE, & there are 2 ways to get it. The harder way is to download & install a portion of the Windows ADK [Assessment and Deployment Kit], which takes up ~3 GB. By default a win10 install will include a Recovery partition that stores the files needed for Windows Recovery Environment, and that includes a copy of WinPE, which most apps will use for their recovery [bootable] USB sticks. Windows 7 & 8 should have that recovery environment too, but I've seen all 3 Windows versions installed without it, & only in that case would you need the ADK.

AOMEI also has a "standard" version of this program which performs most of the functions and is available for free. Their web site has a comparison chart of the features so you can decide if you need some of the more esoteric functions (like converting a partition from MBR to GPT). Apparently the free version has been available on CNET for some time.

David Brown, It is also on their website under "Downloads"..in 1 of the comments below, I posted a link to compare all editions

David Brown,

" Their web site has a comparison chart of the features so you can decide if you need some of the more esoteric functions..."

While I've used features only available in the Pro version, as you point out, not everyone will. But it's really the same amount of work, & the same impact on Windows to install the free version or the GOTD, so the way I look at it is "go for it" -- even if you don't use the extra stuff, you haven't wasted any time, effort, or money, and if you need those extra features some day, you got them.

I've owned the professional version for several years now. It does what I need with no fuss, and is easy to set up and run.

You can get a 50% discount BUT if you close the windows that offers it then according to them that offer is gone. What if I wanted to try the software first and didn't have time to just drop everything else that I was doing?

Reply   |   Comment by Exploro  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

Exploro, There is an arrow icon in the menu bar after you start the program. It is on the far right side of the menu bar. Clicking that arrow takes you to an AOMEI web site offering you a 40% discount with a special 10% extra discount. So you do not need to make a decision before installing the software.

What actually does that 1-year licence mean? Is the software going to stop working or certain features will be no longer available, or what?

Reply   |   Comment by Marek  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+23)

Agreed. This is a critical question for me. Does this mean we only get updates for a year or do the "pro" features stop working or worse yet, the entire program? What exactly is the license?

Reply   |   Comment by DanO  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Marek, It appears certain features will stop working and will revert to their "standard" edition. Remember, according to GOTD, no updates or tech support during the year, but best to inquire directly with AOMEI.
Here is the comparison of all the editions

DanO, No updates, after the year it reverts.

DJ, It appears they offer their "free" tech support on their standard version and "standard" support on the pro edition..I am assuming that means it may take a while (standard) to a few days (free) to get back in touch, but better than nothing

Marek,

"What actually does that 1-year licence mean? Is the software going to stop working or certain features will be no longer available, or what?"

While I can't say what AOMEI's policies are on today's GOTD, I can say that until a month or so ago I was using PAP 6.1 from a giveaway years ago, and it was still working fine, right up until I uninstalled it to add v.8.1 from another giveaway.

A good solid app, but now only a 12 month license. If you have an older 'non-expiring edition', and it still works, think about if you really need any of the new features of this one, as it obviously uninstalls the old version

Loads and loads of features. Lovely program that i am glad to have back since changing machines.
Definite keeper. It also enables the user to make a USB stick copy of windows so that you can be right at home on another computer.
i suggest that you just install this, The Installation is foolproof (hmm, perhaps I should hold judgement on that, lol) and find out everything it can do but I think we could ALL benefit from this program.

Terry E.,

"It also enables the user to make a USB stick copy of windows..."

I think most people would be happier using the free Rufus to make a Windows To Go drive, as it gives some added boot options. That said, a WTG drive works best I think using a 2.5" SSD in an external USB 3 housing -- a USB stick &/or a conventional external drive can work, but it takes forever to load, while on an SSD it *almost* seems normal.

Note that if you use win10 Home or Pro, starting it up on a device with win10 already installed & activated may count against the number of hardware changes you're allowed before win10 deactivates. The Enterprise version can't activate on your home setup however. Note also that Microsoft is dropping WTG support.

FWIW... a WTG drive is basically a full version installation of win10 on a MBR drive without the default Recovery partition. It works because win10 is much better than earlier Windows versions at finding & installing needed drivers when started on new hardware. If that doesn't work for you, you might try some of the alternatives at reboot[.]pro . Basically you can create mini versions of Windows, xp <-> 10, that are Much smaller than any WTG drive and work mostly anywhere.
