Record and capture audio from any source playing on your PC.

AlomWare Actions lets you work smarter and be more productive by automating all aspects of your day! With no programming skills at all, you can quickly create actions that open your favorite documents and apps with a hotkey, or that type text for you, or that send push notifications by email about whatever you need to know.

Just create a new blank action, and add plain-English steps to it by double-clicking them from the comprehensive step list. When your action is done, you can assign an optional hotkey to it for running at any time. If you don't want to create an action from scratch, just use the simple Action Wizard to instantly create common actions such as opening apps and documents, typing regular text, modifying the clipboard text, running DOS commands, and so on. There's also a macro recorder in AlomWare Actions to record your keystrokes and mouse clicks for later playback.

APOLOGY TO GAOTD: It turns out our own installer had a bug that was stopping it working with Win XP 32bit, and we suggested that GAOTD's installer was at fault.

I want to make it clear it was AlomWare's fault entirely, and apologize to GAOTD unreservedly.

Paul @ AlomWare.

To all those that had problems with the GAOTD installer, please contact us at info@alomware.com and we'll link you to a non-GAOTD installer instead, to see if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Hi, the problem turned out to be the Inno Setup installer we've been using. When we package the app just inside a zip file, it works fine with XP 32bit. If anyone wants a link to this non-setup version, just email info@alomware.com for it. Thanks, and sorry for this problem!

I've been having the same problem with installation as skip (comment #17), except on a Windows 8.1 platform. I've tried everything I can think of, including running setup.exe as administrator and closing down all the antimalware programs I could. Nothing works. :(

Reply   |   Comment by Erik K  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Erik K,
At my end, the software installed fine on a Windows 7 Pro (x64) laptop, but refused to install on a laptop running Windows XP Pro (x32). The message I received from the install process said that the version of Windows XP was not supported and not that the setup.exe file was corrupted. Yet, according to the 'System Requirements' Information, both Windows XP x32 & XP x64 were to be supported.
Also, despite not installing at all on my Windows XP(x64) laptop, the wrapper from GAOTD continues on its merry way believing the installation was successfull.

SkippyK,
Correction to my previous message. I meant to say Windows XP (x32) instead of XP(x64).

What's the best way to automate programs and docs opening at X minutes after startup? I thought this would do it, but I'm guessing it won't.

Created an action to open Photoshop and it changed the type direction from English to Arabic (right to left) and I can't change it back, not even in preferences. Uninstalled.

Reply   |   Comment by Wyndham  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-8)

Wyndham, the app won't (and can't) change any third-party app settings unless you specifically made it do so. Something else was the cause. Maybe Photoshop was expecting a specific command line parameter to launch in English.

I just wanted to say that I think I might like this little app, but I think the cost is too high for what it does. Now I know it is free today, but I like to stick to trying the gotd offerings that I might want to purchase later. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents and the reason I won't be downloading it.

"... add plain-English steps..."
"... the app is Unicode internally, but just not for keystroke typing..." (see #7)

So, there are 2 string objects --- one is Unicode for some "internal" user (the compiler, perhpas?), the other one is ASCII for the poor user --- for each text widget? Looks like a concept in itself.

Alom could have kept the price tag at $19.99 as seen on Softpedia because $39 is very expensive for what their software does --- and does not.

Paul Krantz, the activation message is from GAOTD. The app itself doesn't need activation at all.

Reply   |   Comment by AlomWare  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+6)

AlomWare, So why isn't the program showing up on my program list? There is no evidence that Setup.exe actually installed anything.

Reply   |   Comment by Paul Krantz  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

Paul, I ran into the same problem -- the AlomWare Actions installer would not start running (in such cases only the confusing GOTD "success" dialog box appears and the giveaway app has not actually been installed).

After a while, having seen this behavior before, I realized that I had to temporarily deactivate AVG Free Antivirus in order for the installer to be able to run. This is worth remembering as a tactic for ALL future installations, not just for GOTD installers.

Dear Alomware - thanks for responding to the queries and comments so diligently. It is very comforting. Just 2 general questions - the program records keystrokes and mouse clicks.
1. Are there any communication between the program and an external server?
2. If yes, are provisions taken to protect information from being communicated that could be deemed private or confidential information (like usernames, passwords, log-on information and the likes)?
Thanks

Doesn't support unicode, can only type english keystrokes, it can't type Japanese and Chinese, AutoHotkey Unicode can, I know this for sure. Of course for the most english speakers it's not a problem, but unicode characters support begins from Windows NT/2000.

Reply   |   Comment by Ew  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-4)

Per the EULA, the app is written only for English versions of Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10. It's less than a year old, so support for Unicode is a future consideration if response is good.

Reply   |   Comment by AlomWare  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+19)

AutoHotKey has been around forever with a vast global team behind it; and it's made by geeks, for geeks. AlomWare Actions is less than a year old by a small independent company and is targeting non-geeks. The two apps are obviously going to differ in abilities at this time. :)

AlomWare,
so primitive!?
unicode is around for more then 10 years and this software less then a year!!!? ridiculous.
to convert may require more work then starting up with from zero.
Practically if you used unicode variables you would have nice app, but now is useless in today global world.
sorry for harshness, for me is a very sensitive issue.
I program in multi linguo including different alphabets since 1983. way before unicode. that was a challange

Reply   |   Comment by infi  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-18)

infi, don't get me wrong: the app is Unicode internally, but just not for keystroke typing at this time. New apps don't cater for everybody immediately. Minimum viable product at this time. Improvements come later if interest is high.

AlomWare,
Yes it seams to be misunderstanding.
I commented based on your comment.
Now after installed the app. it seams to take Chinese characters, nevertheless, as much as i understand it after a brief look, it seams that actually for this app it does not really makes difference if it is unicode or not.
anyway, i had no time yet to examine it thoroughly therefore i refrain from further comments on that matter

For active AutoHotkey users this software offers nothing new, exept maybe for sending an email, and of course it has the GUI. Really? And here is only hotkeys like CTRL+J, and no hotstrings like in AutoHotkey, is when you type "btw" and it'll erase it and type "by the way".
No, thanks.

Reply   |   Comment by Ew  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-16)

Ew, this is purposely not designed for AutoHotKey users; it's for non-tech users who want a simple way to automate tasks without writing scripts manually.

You can certainly use AlomWare Actions to type phrases -- just not as literal expanded text (yet). Just create an action for the text or phrase to be typed, and name it what you wish the shortcut to be. For example, create an action named "btw" to type "by the way". Then, just press the app's main hotkey and type "btw" and press Enter to type it. Simple! :)

AlomWare, The 32 bit XP problem could just be the GOTD installer/wrapper, which causes all kinds of problems on any 32 bit OS.
Maybe you could advise them on how to fix it please (like recompile the wrapper on a 32 bit machine).

henry-bee, - me again. "Installed" on Win 7 64-bit but icon just sat unresponsively on the desktop. When I tried to uninstall, it claimed that the program was running, but no evidence that it was. Not even in Task Manager.
Be cautioned, friends, we are being used as unwitting beta-testers - which is okay if the software is further developed than this appears to be. And as long as you know.
For software that is intended to save time, it's eaten up a lot of mine. I'm not a newbie - I've been working in IT for 35 years. Uninstalled - eventually.

AlomWare,

The screenshots on GOTD indicate that this is the "Free lite version" although the same screenshot you pointed users to on your website, show that this is a "Free non-upgradable promo version" instead, and also on your website you state "Non-promo version available again soon."

The lite version is "Free" and limited to 10 actions.

Since the program is stated as being available regularly for $39, this should be the full version, although it is not clear how users are limited (upgradable or number of actions).

Can you clarify?

henry-bee, our main dev machines are Win 7 64bit, and the app does run perfectly. You are not beta testers by any stretch. I'm really assuming that the GAOTD installer is doing something wrong here. Contact us at info@alomware.com after the promo ends so we can send you a link to an untouched version.

Reply   |   Comment by AlomWare  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

AlomWare,

The XP install issue may be a two-fold issue, but the first one is clearly in the installer setup. You use InnoSetup to create your installer. The installer's job is to check the OS and determine whether to continue, or to inform the user that the program is not for their OS (MinVersion setting). For this program, the report to the user is immediate, so it has not got to the point of the program being installed, and then informing the user that it cannot work on XP. So, it doesn't matter if the actual program works on an XP OS at your development facility or anywhere else if the installer is set up to prevent installation on that OS version.

You stated "... we have a couple of XP as well that we test our apps on before release. It works fine on those. Although, they do have Service Pack 3 installed, so maybe if the other users haven't done that?"
No, that isn't the case. Most XP users do have SP3 installed. I can confirm that the last two versions of your program will not install on three different XP SP3 computers. Also, most users of XP SP3 are using the 32-bit version of the OS. That is the key difference.

Also, whether the program runs on your XP computer is not valuable. We do not know if your XP computers are 32-bit or 64-bit. the program appears to work on 64-bit OS just fine.

All of your comments regarding not installing on XP are stated as if the problem is totally new to you today, however when the program was offered on a different site on October 26, 2016, the same XP install issue was pointed out. On that offering you also acted as if the problem was totally new, even going as far as to state that maybe "the download here is set up wrong", however they clearly responded to you that they were passing on the same installer you gave them, and if it was a problem with the installer, then it was something for you to figure out.

Finally, for that offer, as a temporary resolution, XP was removed from the operating systems list that the program would work on. You also claimed that you would look into the problem. Later (October 28, 2016) you stated "We have since discovered the problem and will have a fixed version in the coming days that will run on XP 32bit without problems."

It looks like the issue was that the program was compiled to run on 64-bit OS only. Even if you create a version that will run on 32-bit XP OSes, you need to make sure the Inno setup allows installation on 32-bit OS.

Today you also stated, "I'm really assuming that the GAOTD installer is doing something wrong here." It is ironic that you also point to the installer offered by GOTD as possibly being a problem. The user's issue in this case was not whether the setup works or not, but whether the program operates as claimed AFTER the install. The GOTD installer does its job, and the program had already installed. If the program does not operate as claimed then, it certainly is not the GOTD installer provided.

The changelog (http://www.alomware.com/actions-changes.txt) for the program (suspiciously) shows only two versions (1.34 and 1.35), with the 1.34 having a date of Oct 26 (same as the other offer, and obviously made after the other offer since it takes time to set up the version that they provided for the download).

The version 1.35 you created on Nov 5 shows that "Recording macros now include symbols again (accidentally broken in last update)."

Today's version should be version 1.35.

Whether the program will work on a particular OS and version of that OS depends on the required DLLs, and what compiler you use to create the distributed program. If the program works on your XP machines, and they are 32-bit OS versions of XP, then it should work on other XP 32-bit machines. Regardless of how the program itself works, or what OSes it works on, you have to make sure the supplied installer will allow installation on XP.

Today you stated "If it's a bug, we'll reward you with a free license." A bit odd since on Oct 28th, you claimed to know what the problem was. Regardless, are you referring to a bug in the Alom Actions software, in the installer program, or in the installer config used to create the installer? If the program works on your XP machines (if they are 32-bit), then it would not be a bug in the actual program. The installer you use is Inno Setup, and it obviously is not the problem (many XP installs to back that up). The issue in this case would be the Inno Setup/Config, but I suspect that you have XP 32-bit OS specifically blocked, and a user from the other offer gave a clear indication why.

The good thing about Inno Setup is that the contents can be extracted without executing the installer. This is handy for using on other OSes that can execute Windows software, such as WINE on Linux. One user in the previous offer showed that when your program is extracted and started, an error “The procedure entry point Wow64EnableWow64FsRedirection could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.” I have confirmed that same error. The 64 in that error indicates to me that the program you are distributing expects a DLL that exists on a 64-bit OS. Therefore, I suspect the computers you have at your facility are 64-bit XP, otherwise, the program should have the same problem. That is how you know what the problem is, but you have not created a version and installer for the XP 32-bit OS yet.

I see no other indications that you investigated the XP problem any further, and today, the problem still exists, yet posed as if it never existed previously.

By now, I would have expected that we are past "in the coming days" so when will you release a version that works on the XP 32-bit OS?

Gary Smith, sorry for the confusion. The promo version is the full version without any limits. It's just not upgradable.

AlomWare, GAOTD is showing the lite version screenshots by mistake.

Robert, you're right in the sequence of events. We disabled XP in our installer in the other offer due to no time to investigate the Wow64EnableWow64FsRedirection problem, but then we fixed that bug and unfortunately forgot to re-enable XP in our installer for this new GAOTD offer. Really bad, I know. We are new to this giveaway concept and thus made mistakes in the way we handled it. We apologise again to GAOTD for it.

Gary Smith, the promo version is the full version with no limitations apart from being non-upgradable. The screenshots here on GAOTD are incorrect and show the regular lite version that is limited to creating only 10 actions for use. The promo version here allows 999 actions, just like the paid version.
