Richard, that's more unlikely. Either your mail server has blocked our message or its stuck somewhere on your spam filter.

I haven't downloaded yet, but, files on the PC are never really gone when deleted. When passwords are recovered and even if the software is uninstalled, what is to stop a hacker from retrieving this info?

Reply   |   Comment by Bo  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

[ Bo ],

Nothing either way, a cracker ( crackers are bad, hackers are good ) can get past a password without needing to know it, or steal a password from this software or directly from wherever the password is stored, these password collecting tools are age-old and wide-spread and no-brainers.

If you have something you fear might be easily compromised, then change passwords randomly, often, and to large, random contents.

And always leave your bank in a locked-out mode when you are done by trying to sign-in multiple times with the wrong password so it must be changed by multiple confirmations before next use.

I use tools like this to make a list for folks who have multiple devices, and they are tired of having to change their passwords every time they sign-in on a different device and don't know their password, now they can look it up and just sign-in accurately.

Yahoo and Netflix are coming up with clever ways to avoid constantly changing passwords by either letting you sign in without a password, only confirmation, or by not changing passwords for other devices, just the one you are at.

I find that passwords only keep the rightful owner out.

Crackers are in in a minute and dont need to crack passwords, they just steal it, and usually from the other end where the same amount of effort doesn't just get them one person's password, but gets them 500,000 person's passwords -- much more efficient use of their time.

That's why I suggested that this software needs a web-lookup to alert you if your email has been compromised by known bulk thefts -- it does not, so I do not consider it a "complete suite" in spite of their claims, in stead, it's a tiny, compromised, ineffectual, unintelligent suite.

Plimpe, the server was running fine all the time during this giveaway without a problem. You might have typing error with your email and therefore the confirmation link was sent to a wrong email or spam folder.

Anyway all users who have confirmed the link and currently have a pending status on their activation, we will give them few more hours to complete the activation.

Please use the same confirmed email and the same procedure like registering for the first time. At the end you will be moved to the final step where you would only need to click the blue "Activate" button after entering your email address again.

As several others have complained, I installed the application this morning and provided my e-mail address. I received an e-mail that requested I confirm my address by clicking on the link and it went to your web page. That was seven hours ago and still no activation code!

Reply   |   Comment by Jim Ruboyianes  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Jim Ruboyianes, They don't send an activation code! Once you insert your e-mail address into the "activate" square inside the program, go to your email program and open the email from PC Trek. Then just go back into the little square where they asked for your e-address, and the program will automatically be registered!.

Lin Lynn, I followed your procedure. It wasn't automatically registered. The transaction timed out and now it's too late to register the product! What a POS way to have to register a product!

At least you did not scan and send all of your passwords to their server or to any man-in-the-middle ... probably.

Peter Blaise, We felt obligated to answer this ridiculous accusing about collecting (stealing) user passwords to our server and changeling you to find any simple prove about that!

Anyway we would like to declare that there is not such activity and if by any chance even a single password is stolen by us, please report us to your authorities or anywhere needed.

[ PC Trek ],

If you insist that your password collector connect to the Internet ...

Plus, I wrote "man-in-the-middle", so ...

You might want to only check the Internet at installation, not during any running of the actual program.

Just saying.
__________

But how are you coming along with checking stolen password dumps for users who may be compromised, and now add checking for and offering to TURN OFF the Internet before scanning for passwords?
.

Reply   |   Comment by Peter Blaise  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Peter Blaise, based on all of your comments I can see you have pretty good knowledge about computers and maybe you are computer engineer or something, but please allow me here to explain average users about the internet connection this program require.

This program needs internet connection only when trying to activate itself or checking for an update. This is the only way to confirm if the email is listed on our server or if there is need for an update. Any other software in the world works this way where it needs to be activated or checked for an update because those details are not located on users computer.
We never ask or require internet connection to perform a recovery because it could be done without it. In a matter of fact you could run our software and without performing any recovery activate it first. Then you could disable internet forever and this software would work just fine. So the theory that it could send passwords to our server is rejected :). Anyway if you analyze our software it would NEVER try to connect to our server by its own in any other occasion than mentioned above.

For the second paragraph about "man-in-the middle" and prevent stolen password dumps...
As you know there are thousand of password recovery tools on internet and anyone who have physical access to your computer could use them and technically nobody can prevent this. Our software doesn't allow to be activated twice even on single computer and already activated software can't be transferred to other computer which would prevent such an activity. Our intention is to help users to recover their own forgotten keys and passwords and this was the best way to do that and make sure they are using on their own computers.

Honestly, thanks a lot for asking this question because I hope it much more clear for everybody now.

[ PC Trek ],

You da boss, it's your software.

I'm just saying ... that password collecting software that phones home is not "any" software, and kind of begs the question,

"How as an end user am I to inspect what I expect -- that my passwords as collected are not going out to the vendor or to a man-in-the-middle ... unless I unplug and disconnect from the Internet before collecting passwords, and exit the program before reconnecting to the Internet?"

So, how are you coming with the addition of:

-- passwords for user sign-in, including from off-line USB-connected Windows drives

-- web search for compromised emails and sign-ins ( obviously separate from password collection when the user has disconnected from the Internet )

Thanks.
.

Installation straight forward and pain free. Nice simple GUI. Impressive speed and somewhat amazing to see what it was able to recover most especially website passwords and data. Highlights how easy it is to forget where you've registered in the past and what your browser keeps . Would be useful to be able to export all of the data to a text file in one go.

This is amazing. Downloaded, installed, and registered in less than 20 seconds. It showed all passwords for installed software, browsers, wireless networks, credentials, and email.

Download, Unzip the package then run Setup.exe which is included in the package, and install the software.

To activate your free copy, click "Activate Now" button in the bottom right corner. Then click "Activate my FREE 6 Months License" and enter your email, the confirmation email. After activation, open the program and click "Perform a quick recovery" button. All lists/keys are shown under each category on the left. You can save copy in a text file by clicking on the Save As button located in the lower bottom right. You need to do this for every category. Can't get simpler than that. Thumbs up for this program.

Activation was strange. Although it proceeded properly, the software didn't get through to the PC Trek server and so would not activate . . . until I disabled my antivirus. Then all went well and in fact APR ran very well, recovering all my Firefox log-ins and probably all my software serial numbers. It even runs well as a portable APP. In all, this is an impressive giveaway that shouldn't be passed up.

So thumbs up on this one !

what happens after 6 months trial expires?

Reply   |   Comment by geekogeek  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+8)

geekogeek, After 6 months all passwords and keys are partially recovered except Windows key which is fully recovered in a case if you need to reinstall Windows with no embedded bios key. You can reactivate the software again if you have the need of it like new passwords or software keys stored after this period which is optional.

Reply   |   Comment by PC Trek  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

geekogeek, my guess is it will revert back to the free/unregistered version. A quote from the dev:

"Without a license you can recover Windows Key for free. All other keys or passwords are recovered partially if not activated."

Seems okay, I got loads of password and license references from the registry, but it's a shame that it has no smarts to look elsewhere, it locked when searching browsers, I killed it and restarted, then it got browser passwords fine, I saved text files of each search so I now have a historical reference to help me find passwords and licenses for later re-use.

I see nothing special or better than the exceptional free NirSoft utilities, except maybe adding a GUI graphic user interface collecting various searches into a single on-screen group ( note: independent folks have sort of done a GUI for NirSoft's separate utilities ).

This does not seem to collect login in information, so if you have a user account with an unknown password, or off-line drive where accounts have a password unknown to you, this does not seem to offer any services to get those passwords -- we still need to reboot into someone else's Linux CD/USB and get those ourselves.

When I see a title like "Password Recover SUITE" that is missing essential password recovery capability, I think the vendor has either missad a great opportunity to really offer an all-in-one collection, or it's just marketing whooey, and the vendor is nothing more than advertising copywriters, not programmers.

Another opportunity missed is to search the web for matching sign-in names and passwords that have been compromised so users know what to CHANGE.

All in all, an immature offering in an age where intelligent sophistication is absolutely essential.
.

Reply   |   Comment by Peter Blaise  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+33)

Peter Blaise,

...however, SEARCHING the web for matching sign-in names and passwords would likely cause an otherwise-unique/secure set to become vulnerable to future compromise if such searches were being monitored and harvested as combinations to try!

Reply   |   Comment by HMarx  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

[ HMarx ],

There are a bunch of websites right now that monitor and allow you to check your email against stolen and recovered data.

How does anyone know the current or future updates or invasions of this software will NOT report all collected passwords over the Internet when this programs checks itself over the Internet?

Unplug your Internet when running this program, and reboot it out of memory before reconnecting to the Internet, and do not let updates see prior scans!

Did ANYBODY think of that before -- even I missed it!

"COMPLETE Suite" could include such a features, but without this, and other password recovery and information features, this offering seems insubstantial, but could have been ground-breaking.

I am impressed. It did reveal all my passwords correctly and in a short amount of time including one I had forgotten/not written down so it really did need recovery.

I do have a STRONG suggestion to the vendor. Don't restrict the window to a partial screen. I find this to be beyond irritating and into screaming frustration demanding I scroll around a tiny window to see the entire display.

Set up a beta test and avoid this in the future. Else, good job here.

Downloaded and installed on Windows 10 64 without any problems. Test performed (but Mail) well. In Mail it made > 10 time an error
Mail: Outlook
Error #94: Invalid use of Null

The results:
Software: it found only Windows 10, BIOS and my old MS Office 2013 (I am using now MS O 2016). A second single Software check asked me for an advanced search and this shows many passwords of other applications.
Browser: it found a lot of log-in, even in a browser (OPERA), which I never used(!)
WLAN: okay, found all
Credentials (in German: Windows): it found some strange hits like this:
Microsoft_PaidWiFi_MicroRefreshToken
Type: Generic Credential
Username:
Password: ÉÝñÑŒzÀO—ë...
or
MicrosoftOffice15_Data:live:cid=0...
Type: Generic Credential
Username:
Password: MCddm0TSUWNo60jYifvtnK...
or
Item Name: 433a5...
Type: Generic Credential
Username:
Password: ‹ý¾¬ƒá‹Ü½Ì¶...
E-Mail: It found my old passwords which I changed some years ago. The presend used passwords were not recovered. Very strange.

It could found my PC user name, however, it could not find the log-in password.

Nice to have some updates. However the best recover is still my 'hardware' little book with all handwritten log-ins and passwords.

Thanks for your WiFi code, [ Ritchi ], I'm signing in right now, please pay the bill so I can continue to use free Internet.

Hahahahahaha.

Just kidding!

Yes, many libraries within Microsoft and other programs encode tokens for themselves that look like passwords, some are random, changeable, and some reflect a hash of the installation and or other machine details so those programs know each other when communicating from different machines on a network, like cookies -- they are meaningless to us and they are self-generating, there is no place but the registry we could insert them in the future, but they might be a way of faking different machines from one machine ... maybe.

Please reinstall 32bit Firefox, but make sure you do NOT delete and keep your Firefox saved data, passwords, profile and etc which will be imported into your new installation. Run our software again and recover your passwords from the 32bit version of Firefox. Later you can reinstall 64bit Firefox again and keep using it on. After all this software is developed to recover your forgotten login details and this solution might help you.

sparkz, if you have installed the software from our website successfully, but you can't install it from GOTD .zip package then you might have downloaded both files on different folders where you don't have enough privileges. You could perform "take ownership of files or folders", but if you are unfamiliar with this procedure then the easiest solution would be to copy GOTD .zip file to the same folder where you have successfully executed the other installer and try to run it from there.

I am administrator, i tried "as administrator". i just tried again and i was able to run setup.
i then tried activate. first message : my email could not be found in your database. second try
seemed to work, but now waiting for (how long) to get 6month activation code.

sparkz, We don't send activation codes with this giveaway. If you have confirmed your email, please use the same email and the same procedure provided by GOTD in the readme file. Just click the blue "Activate" button on the final step and its done.

PC Trek, tks for your advice and patience. Finally got it working, although the strangest thing was
that for half a day i was unable to execute the setup-file. All in all the most complicated GOTD i
ever downloaded.

Easy register, useful for basic pw's lost you need now. Wish it was able to use on usb, for older pcs and laptops, I no longer use but would like to transfer some programs from. A limited trial for 6 months would have been a lot more useful since I have no lost pw's lost on the pc I downloaded it to.

I installed it on my test laptop with Windows 2003 and it does not start (there is not any error message), even if I set compatibility with XP.

the license is only for 6 months... So, when you really need it one day, it propably will have been expired

Reply   |   Comment by wilow  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+62)

wilow, You'll have to install it today and make a copy of all the software-installation key's.
And one day before ending the same action.
Then you have the key's of the software of that moment.
After that, buy a new one or ??
This software will not be a solution for crashed Windows, I think.
Or if that windows is on a USB-disk, maybe this software can scan it. Not tested by me. No time now.

Reply   |   Comment by Ootje  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+4)

wilow, so keep in mind to recover them before the software expires, which should be done anyway twice a year as a routine

Ootje,
May I respectfully suggest that if it works for you, buy it. This is very reasonably priced software. Would be good to have support for more 'thorny' situations(?)

warpwiz, From every software, every login, every account I do have a backup-file.
Even from all the GOTD-accounts/program's form 5 years ago.
Sometime I do need something like this, because I do repair some Windows from other people.
And then there are a lot of lost passwords/accounts.
Now I have an SBS-server with no password for the admin. And I like to look at all the problems with it, because it was dumped as a slow, slow server. In the beginning it was normal fast, bur the last year it become bad. So maybe I use this software today to get a look at thye login password, so I can read all the logs and learn from it. And maybe to use it for myself as backup server.

Edgar, If you get a reply and I found such software exists I would immediately stop using TrueCrypt.

Reply   |   Comment by D Murphy  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+14)

D Murphy, then one should probably opt for not using any encryption programs at all, most of these tools use different attacking methods and encryptions and depending on the hardware specifics where it's used on and what is already known about a certain password, it can still take a very long time until a password is found and with very long i mean up to years.

Reply   |   Comment by Chasm  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Chasm, I think your post is a contradiction within itself. So if one encrypts a file and uses a filename mixed in amongst many others and give it a common suffix (like . docx) so a stranger would not even know which file to start cracking then a password that is not words from a dictionary is long and has a variety of characters and numbers and will take years to crack. Then you say not to use it ????

Thank you for advice
Maybe there is easier way to open encrypted TrueCrypt file?
Software you hinted at was either very complicated for not digital person or terribly slow- it state that you find 20 characters password
can take tens of years.
Google states that TrueCrypt is insecure - there is a simple backdoor there , how to find and use this
backdoor?

Reply   |   Comment by Edgar  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

D Murphy, no, what i was saying was that there are tools that do support password decryption but that doesn't mean anything. In most cases one would probably just start with attacking methods for a completely unknown password. So there is no reason to fear the sheer presence of decryption tools when it's properly encrypted. So why would you stop using TrueCrypt then?

Edgar, I suppose this is not the place for this discussion but so appology to others for pursuing an off subject thread. But I'm too interested to drop it. So you say "Google states that TrueCrypt is insecure - there is a simple backdoor there" can you provide a link to where Google says that? In the mean time have you read this.

Tapet Klister, Same here on windows 10. Also tried on virtual machine with no antivirus. Same result

Reply   |   Comment by JC  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+7)

Tapet Klister, Without specific message its really difficult to know whats causing this. Our best guess would be your Windows system is missing Universal C Runtime which are usually installed with every windows update enabled. This might interfere with Firefox decryption if its already installed and might cause a problem.
Please try to download this update from Microsoft official website on the following link:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2999226/update-for-universal-c-runtime-in-windows
and select the package based on your Windows system.

What is the difference between version 1.0.2 and 1.0.4. Is it possible to update by omitting the GOTD website?

Reply   |   Comment by Ryszard  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Ryszard, from what i've seen the 1.0.2 offer was a competition, not a regular giveaway, without any specifics given for what a license is good for. Was it a time-limited license or lifetime? Are updates included or not? Without that info i would say it's best to keep the current version or ask the vendor about that info to see if a update is possible with the license you have.

You can find the changelog here https://www.pctrek.com/history.html
