These extra items allow to invoke some handy window management commands such as: roll up/unroll, make transparent, change program priority, minimize to the system tray, keep always-on-top, accurately resize, accurately align, and many others. These new features allow both advanced and newbie Windows users save their time and desktop space by neatly organizing their windows.

Unlike other OS extensions, Actual Window Menu provides flexible configuration abilities allowing to create specific settings for some particular windows and customize on a window basis as the exact set of extra items as their properties.

Mmmm I never thought of it like that Schop, (comment #80) but you are correct, so I'll drop it for now. I'm sure the regulars if they like the Elefun animated wallpapers will have got the message by now any way. I personally thought I was doing a favor as it wasn't immediately obvious that you could download free wallpapers every day from Elefun, who are contributors to this site. But you are right. This isn't the place to be ‘spamming’; however I think I'll continue to remind people whenever there is a related product such as a screen saver as I think the occasional reminder is appropriate. Unless GAotD themselves show their disapproval by deleting my 'spam'.

Re comment #10, thank you for the reference. I tried the alternate donate ware (shell enhancer by Nuonsoft, and am pleased with it. I would agree that is appears of better functionality than this giveaway of the day; (which is not usually the case (IMO) when comparing a commercially available product to something that could be regarded as freeware). I went to the home site and was impressed with the tutorials, bug reports and the general feel of the site. Also I easily found links to other donate ware, one of which I've already found really useful because it enables me to cycle all my 'free' animated wallpapers that I've (and am still) downloaded from Elefun Wallpapers, who contribute to the sister site by giving away games. :)

#86 Tom:

"Ghost" option pins the window to the desktop kinda-like wallpaper so you don't accidentally click something on it and cause pandemonium.
:)
You can undo it by right-clicking the window's button on the taskbar and selecting "Ghost" again. You might even make it partly transparent first so you can see it when you want to but it's not too annoying.

Thanks Actual Tools and GAOTD for a fine utility.

#37, I searched to see what it was supposed to do. I read what was put along with it before I downloaded it. I tried the website but got the error message that it seems everyone else has been getting. I thought I knew what it was that I was downloading. What I'd read and found about the program sounded like a great program and worth a shot, so I downloaded it. Obviously it wasn't for me because it didn't do what I thought it did. I don't download just anything without doing a lot of reading and checking up on it. I'm glad it's what others are/were looking for and that it's working for them. So, #37, you have at least myself pegged all wrong with your assumptions as I DID what you claimed I didn't do. No worries though, your apology is accepted for your ignorant comments.

Thanks GAOTD.

I liked moviegear, but my trail expired, lol.

#80 I for one appreciate White Rabbit's insights and suggestions. I swear someone could go out into the desert, sit on a rock, contemplate the universe, and someone, somewhere would dig up a reason to get offended about it. Just scroll past the comments that ignite your ire. Tolerant people tend to live longer, happier lives. White Rabbit has brightened my day on more than one occasion.

As for today's featured software, someone said it was impossible to uninstall. That makes me reluctant to download it. Does anyone else know if it is possible to uninstall if it turns out not to prove useful to me?

Actual Tools: It would be helpful if Actual Window Menu used, or at least had the option to use, opacity instead of transparency. It seems logically backward to define transparency rather than opacity.

#86, Actual Window Menu has a help file, and there are also explanations in the main program. The Ghost option passes mouse clicks to underlying windows (unless the default Ctrl-Shift is pressed while using the mouse, see Actions->Options in the main program). This is most useful for semi-transparent stay-on-top windows. Besides the menu, Ghost can be toggled via Win-G for the window which has the keyboard focus.

#89, you were using Firefox, what did you expect? Actually, I tested what you said using Firefox, and didn't encounter any problems.

Half of these features ("Always On Top", "Minimize To Tray", "Priority" and "Transparency") are available in Tummy's free PowerMenu, which is stable and doesn't cause problems in any program I've used so far.
Note that Powermenu supports parameters that will affect a particular window (or more, I think), so you could easily store settings in shortcuts, batch files and/or launching programs.

Also, anyone who wants to resize Firefox to a specific size should get the Web Developer extension.

(Oh, and by the way, most of Actual Window Menu's features are natively supported in most Linux window managers. ;>)

DM2 and Actual Window Menu have some overlapping and some different features. While DM2's feature set is larger, Actual Window Menu has particular features that are more useful to me (based on DM2's documentation; I haven't used it).

#74, Welcome. I find it easiest to download the program, then unzip the files without installing or running the program. Next I view the unzipped files and click on the Activate icon. When the program activates (the web page will change to the Giveaway page that says that your program is now activated), I click on the Install icon and install the program. Sometimes you'll find a program that only has the activate icon, or an install icon. That's okay. The program will install fully. With some programs, the way you register a program is a little bit different than what I just described. You will get a code and a name, usually Giveawayoftheday, so you can register and get the full program. Generally you can just cut and paste the information into the registration portion of your program. With this one, though, it's a simple matter of just activating and then installing the program.

If you follow these directions and still have a trial version, try closing the program completely, then bringing it back up again. Sometimes this will work. I hope this helps.

Very nice GAOTD. Now my Window menu is almost as crowded as my shell extensions one :)

I was initially concerned whether the software would be compatible with multiple-monitor and taskbar for 2nd monitor and Window management software (UltraMon - brilliant BTW) and yes, it works great in conjunction with that.

Now the fun part I enjoy. Configuring it all to my liking. I always like a good excuse to get out of doing actual work on the PC but it's feature packed :)

I installed and ran Actual Window Menu this AM and after about6 hours and 20 some odd freeze-ups I uninstalled it. It appears to be an unstable application. It does seem a coincidance that not only does the app seem to be unstable but the author's website also does.

Dumb question of the day. I am new to this giveaway thing and am wondering if someone could tell me how to register this program without paying for it. Where do I look for the code that I need to have the program longer then 60 days or is it only good for 60 days and this place just gives us demo's to try out that we may not have found. I got the screensaver the ohter day and have the same problem. Hate to sound nasty when I have free but I understood it to be the full program. Thanks for any and all help for this old lady.

#67:

Ummm...how else do you think this program would work? It has to monitor the keyboard to work properly.

This is cool...The roll/unroll combined with the free mac gui interface I d/l for elsewhere allows me to turn my PC into a MAC for a lot less! Now if someone could allow the PC to run Final Cut Express on it, I'd be set!!

I downloaded this and I honestly can't find the use for it. I mean...I get the general idea but it seems kind of lame to me.

If I choose to use profanity it's my choice. I honestly don't care what you or anyone else feels about that. "Don’t you see that it’s a comment about you and who you are?" what the hell do you mean? Of course it's who I am. If I felt bad about that I would never use any profanity. It's my personality. Therefore I don't care. Good day to you...fucker.

Hello again,

I have to agree with Princess. The practice of deleting words or moderating members who use profanity in the comments should be adopted immediately.

I'm no prude by a long shot, and I don't usually comment on whiners and the like, but this isn't exactly an 18+ website and I believe that GOTD has a duty to protect children here.

Shame on those posters whose vocabulary immediately reaches for profanity no matter where they visit. Don't you see that it's a comment about you and who you are?

Now I'm glad that I don't visit GOTD at a time when my grandchildren are around.

GOTD - I realize that you need to tread a fine line with regard to censoring speech, but please - take more responsibility when it comes to children.

Have been using WinRoll for quite some time. This looks like a handy tool to have, but unless I deactivate WinRoll, it does not work. I think I prefer WinRoll because it rolls up or down any open window with just 1 click. Will keep this program on my machine just in case I change my mind about WinRoll. The additional options this program offers may outweigh the 1 click convenience of WinRoll.

How about sending your son over to 12chan...
I mean, hey if you dont like those words (they are like it or not part of the english language) you really surf some place with um "age regulation" but there is no place on the internet.

in additon to this i like to state that your son will start to use those word sooner or later and ther is nothing you or anyone could do about it.

#48 Thanks for the info, of course I had not rebooted my computer, otherwise I would have realised this program runs in the background.
#51 Did you by any chance try this utillity, if so does it conflict with DM2? There are some good aspects of DM2 that I like in particular the Paste plug in and the virtual desktop plug in. I am very tempted to uninstall this and install DM2 instead. I would like to discuss this further in the forums if you don't mind.

Thanks GAOTD! Nice little utility!

Half the time my 11 year old son is standing behind me reading over my shoulder as I usually read the reviews before I decide whether or not to download. Was pretty horrified to see the use of the "F word" bandied about today. We homeschool, so we had the opportunity to turn this into an interesting discussion on how those who have little grasp on the English language resort to this vocabulary and what a show of ignorance it is. So while I'm stunned that this language is allowed to bleed through in the reviews, I give the moral lesson and English lesson of the day a 10! However, it's not a lesson I care to repeat with my son. If profanity is allowed, we'll just skip coming to this site every day.

Nice little Progam .

I actualy thought what would i need this for .but it is quite usefull.running in the system tray it add new funcuality with its drop down menu for your windows .the features from transparcy ,window size ,window alignment ,roll ,ghost and more ,give a user many more quick options for handling the way the desktop operates .so my first impression was wrong its actually quite a usefull app , Learning Curve is Low .most users will have it mastered in a couple mins .

the homepage was still down :( i like to check out a application in depth a little prior to installing but due to the sites problem today it wasnt possible. its install and check out .

those wanting more flexability with window management , this will be a great tool .this wont be for everybody thats for sure but a very nice app .

A Nice Acquisition. Thank You GaotD

I love rolling up firefox windows, especially when someone has just messaged me on yahoo. The extra tools, alignment, transparency etc., are just cool little toys that allows you some extra control over focused windows. Been playing around with this for a little while, and its a great little app, that runs in the system tray, and takes little resources. A big thumbs up and another WOW 4 U GOTD!
