This application stores information about encrypted folders on the OS where it is installed. This means, even if You install it on another OS or computer, You are not able to decrypt the encrypted before folder. A message says: The folder is not encrypted. Another thing: when You encrypt a folder using a portable encryption method and You try to decrypt it according to the description, it proposes to You entering twice a new password, so it encrypts the already encrypted folder again and forget about having your important files, which is a real nonsense!!!

Simply! Just use free 7-zip!
Zip up what ever you want!
Then add a password!
Then no one can view or unzip!
Without the password!

Hello. I have used many of your wonderful downloads but this one will not install whether I use the Administrator install or not. Help! Before the time ends please.
It says "Failed to launch program" right after it contacts GOTD.

Kareena Harwood,
I encountered this problem many times myself, until I figured a way around it.
Create a NEW Folder on your desktop. After you unzip the download with 7-Zip, make that window smaller, AND DRAG ALL THREE FILES TO YOUR NEW FOLDER.
Close 7-Zip, go into your new folder and run the exe. file. THAT should work for you!!
I've lost many free downloads until I started doing this...
Good Luck!

A word of warning, there is a clue to a weakness in this products password control... "password protection using Windows kernel level security. "

That basically means it relies upon its own kernel driver to add on custom access controls to the filesystem. That means if you bypass that kernel driver by booting a WinPE or linux LiveCD or take the so called secured drive to a different machine the password access control or folder hiding will be non-existant.

Obviously if the contents are encrypted as well then they will remain encrypted but if not then the files will be freely accessible without the need for a pasword.

First let me start by saying that if the main reason for downloading this software here and today, is because it is free, Don't.
It is free for as long as you do not reinstall windows, do not have any issues with the program etc'
Secondly, and this is a tip for people that try to install more than one of such File/Folder password protection tool on the same comuter, Don't. These tools have the tendency to have conflicts with one another
Thirdly, if you have to have such a tool, be smart and use a free one. Such as SecretFolder

Or read and follow this article guidance

have used safehouse explorer for years...free and works great on hdd, ssd and flash.

clas, I agree! Safehouse is great! However, it does NOT hide/unhide folders. Thus you just look for the safehouse files on the hard drive to see they exist. But at least you can have a password so if you lose your laptop the files are not accessible. Folder Lock does it all and has proven it is reliable. Not good support experience with the Folder Lock people for me, however. I tested WinMend and hid a huge number of files. Then the folder would not UNHIDE and I lost all that data. However I made a backup before hand! So, Safehouse is still a safe bet.

For software like this I believe a FREE program is better choice.

Personally I use this app which has many advanced features usually found in paid software:

http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-File-Encryption-Pro/3000-2092_4-75755645.html

It uses up to 8192-bit symmetric key encryption to password protect in batch your private files & folders.
Best of all you're not limited to a single file per process, since you have the possibility to drag as many files and folders as you like over the main window.
An abundance of algorithms, key generators, cipher modes and padding scheme are available, like SHA, Tiger, Whirlpool, MD, AES, Blowfish, PKCS7 or ZeroByte.
To protect your files & folders you can add a password, pick a file to act as a key, or even plug in a USB device in the same regard for even greater security.
Amazing app.

I went to the publisher's site and downloaded the trial version to try. It would not accept the supplied key. So I used the GOTD version and it registered with no problems. I played with it some. I don't like that it does not support darg and drop, You need to navigate an explorer window to find the folder you want to lock. It has some handy features so I will keep it for now. Here is a link for a Softpedia review.....

Thank you GOTD team and 7thShare Studio.

A question that begs asking is what encryption methods does this offer? An encryption software vendor that is afraid to disclose the encryption methods used implies it is a weak easily crackable method and they are banking on security through obscurity, which is what microsoft use when they build NSA back door bugs into all the versions of windows, which we know is no security at all, I've looked at their pro page and the freeware version of this product and read the description above and there is no mention of what algorithim is used, not even in the sceeenshots!
