Works great under Win10. Simple enough program and extremely reasonably priced, as are your other programs.

Under export, the ability to NAME the icon yourself would be a welcome addition, and for the program to remember a directory for icon storage rather than searching through trees all the time. Projects are saved within the program's own directory, but most people that use custom icons on a desktop computer store custom icons in a central location.

Is there a way to make an icon that isn't perfectly square. The only choices I see are square. What about 24x36, etc.?

Download and install on the latest version of Windows 10 64 was flawless. Activation was equally easy using the readme file info. The program is very easy to use. Controls are intuitive. I was able to create and export a couple of custom icon sets within five minutes. In my opinion, this program is a bargain even at the full price.

There are is a feature that would be nice to have, even if the price was increased. It would be helpful to have even limited editing of personal images. I believe that being able to crop an image, add a border or drop shadow, or rotate the image would save a great deal of time.

Thanks for making this available!

Nice program.....I believe you should elaborate on the custom icon feature...I imported a photo to create an icon, but I would like to import another and overlay it asymmetrically (positioned) and perhaps transparent over the first image...to make the icon more elaborate. I would also like to position the text.

I have used several other similar programs. This is TERRIFFIC! I can create a favicon for a website in an extremely short time. I can choose the exact file type I want/need including ico. It goes to the top of my ALWAYS USE list. Thanks GOATD! and to the Vendor. BTW, it works perfectly IF YOU READ the READ ME file!!

Nice piece of software, and the templates which come with it are also high quality and well designed.
I'll be keeping this one! It does also allow you to input custom icons should you wish.

Installation was quick and easy, upon starting the application it asked for the email and key which was a fast activation after putting in the ReadMe details!

Installed on a Windows 10 64bit, 1703 (updating to 1709 now) with no issues or fusses.

Thanks GOTD & Day 1!

Would this program allow me to create extra-Xtra-EXTRA-Large-Cursors for my Mother who has real troubles seeing any Windows 7,8x,10x existing system cursors?

I created a full set of RED Cursors back in the days of XP and I even managed to create a Scheme File for them, but even those Extra-Large Cursors were still too difficult for my mother to easily see AND find quickly on a desktop/screen

I appreciate i may be slightly off-topic

[ Peter needs help ],

Do you mean Icons, not Cursors?

I saw no cursors in this.
__________

CURSORS: For your blind mum, you may need:

-- Windows Inverted ( extra large system scheme ).

-- with trails / shadow,

-- the least resolution setting on your screen,

-- the largest font %,

-- large font settings for icon labels,

-- drug-store-magnifier classes,

-- touch screen so she don't need no cursors,

-- select "show location of pointer when I press the [ Ctrl ] key",

-- high contrast settings,

-- a cursor creation program, there are freebies out there, plus downloadable pre-built sets.
__________

ICON wise, I asked this program to make a 1,024 x 1,024 icon, and all it built was 256 x 256 icon, and that was from a 600 x 600 original that I had the program scale up 71% first.

So, others may think this program smells nice, but I think it's inappropriately unsophisticated and unaware of it's environment and the competition for an offering that is 30 years into the Windows experience.

-- can't pull an image / icon from within any file,

-- does not offer to allow you to name your save file,

-- does not manage icon sets,

-- does not insert icons into existing files,

-- does not have a pixel graph to create on,
n n
-- does not have basic standard pallet of tools and brushes,

-- and count, remap, and reduce colors,
.
-- no cut-and-paste to build icon from elements inside the program or outside the program,

-- no reset or undo for any adjustment step, must back things out manually or restart from scratch ( I suppose you can save between steps and get a new icon saved with the date and time in between, then delete th eunused steps when you are done ),

In other words, there's still an immense amount of work we have do to manually and with other programs.

Creating an icon or two, of a desktop full, is a cute and one-shot task, but when Microsoft dumps them during updates,

Free Nirsoft ResourceExtract can pull icons ( and anything else ) out of one file, a directory, or a directory tree ( giving me 20,000 icons of all sizes and qualities from a full swoop of my entire XP, WIn 7, WIn 8.1, and WIn 10 computers ).

Free IrfanView has full image import, editing, pallet tools, resizing, recoloring, color depth changing, and saving as icon.

Does anyone know how to put icons inside programs ( for those programmers wanting to ship with their babies intact ) ?

Otherwise, I save special icons in the directory of the program for which I created them, mostly for shortcut calls to my own batch files.

Hey Peter, what I did for my Father, who had extremely poor vision was replace his older monitor by connecting a 50 flat screen TV using an HDMI cable. Play with contrast, resolution, zoom rate, fonts etc. But having the larger screen helped a lot.

Would be nice if you could also search for icons inside of programs. Most have them and a single program to do everything would have some way to take advantage.

Your 1024x PNG ( not icon ) is 768x.

PNG cannot be used as icons in Windows.

Also, rather than using their samples, build your own or import ...

... this program cannot import icons from exe or dll files.

Try to export a 1024x icon from an imported image ...

... the maximum icon size exported is 256x regardless of setting it to 1024x ...

... which is sort of okay since Windows seems to limit icon settings to 256x usage on the desktop ( at that size shows only 10 icons on a 1366x768 display screen ).

I imported a 600x image, scaled it up 71%, saved as 1024x PNG and 1024x icon, and I got a 1024x PNG and a 256x icon result ...

... which I could have done in free IrfanView where I first loaded and cropped the original JPG image.

Why waste my time guessing when free IrfanView is already in my toolbox, and capable of serving me elsewhere?

Also, so I don't have to learn something new with IrfanView since I use it for dozens of other things because it has such incredible tools included ( resizing, drawing, pixel fill and sample, file browsing, color count decreasing, 'exposure', contrast, gamma, saturation, color replacement, blurring and sharpening effects, batch manipulation and conversion ... ), and it will retrieve at least the first icon from any file, including exe and dll.

And free Nirsoft ResoursceExtractor culls and saves separate pre-existing icons from my system into separate files for me to play with.

Just saying ... your samples aren't very real-world ... would you actually USE any of the icons you let their catalog "create" for you?

But thanks for your test efforts.
.

Peter Blaise, True: PNG can not be used as an icon.
But the PNG is 1024*1024.
I did import an image and saved it as a serie of icon's. iOS
There was also a ico labeled as 1024 and in real it was 256. Tha max. is 256 of the serie.
I did not check this untill this morning after reading your comment.

"would you actually USE any of the icons you let their catalog "create" for you?" Yes, after altering some other colour.
I know people and their eye's are not 120%. They own a 21" monitor and also the display of Windows is 150% and even then they have trouble to read which URL they are typing in IE.
For these kind of eyes simple ico's will do the trick.

[ Ootje ],

I presume you mean that you can enlarge default Windows program icons that are not already 256x ... I suppose this program, or free Irfanview, can blow up any less-than 256x icon to 256x, save it as an icon, then we can change the shortcut to use our new icon, but 256x is Windows limit nonetheless.

Using anything other than the original program icon as a base would create an unreferenced on-screen condition should the user want to get help from anyone, especially remote help ... "your icons don't look right, I'm going to reset everything before we begin".

In those situations, i's okay if icons are big, just not replaced with non-original content.
__________

I reduce the resolution of high resolution monitors for people, keeping the aspect ration accurate, and that helps enlarge items on-screen.

There are also color and contrast and color temperature choices, color blindness choices, monitor placement and room lighting choices to facilitate ease of discernment of what's on screen, as well as the litany I shared with a prior user here.
__________

What would you use the included icons for, insertion into programs you wrote and will distribute, your own on-screen icons, icons for shortcuts that don't have icons, such as for batch files, icons for others you support?

Thanks.
__________

PS: Icon1024 03-11-2017 10-39-00_preview.png is 768x, not 1024x, download it again and see.

Peter Blaise, "I presume you mean that you can enlarge default Windows program icons"
No, I do not do that. In Windows there is an option to enlarge everything in the desktop even 150%:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-desktop/how-do-you-resize-desktop-icons-in-windows-8/072bcf2e-7891-49f2-9fe0-bdcf727b8d7a?auth=1
I do work sometimes on this PC and there is a admin-account with normal DPI.
After signing off, there screen for choosing a different account is then normal, 100%. The owners have to look twice for their name.
If they are signing off, the screen with the account's is with larger icons.
It is just a setting in Windows.

"What would you use .. programs you wrote"
I do not write standalone program's; most of the time I wrote applications in Word, Excel, Access etc.
And for shortcut's like sign off Windows, close Windows I use one of the built in icon's from Windows. Or from the file moreicons.dll in the earlier day's. One or two times I did send an image to a website and got a ICO back, and placed it on a server. And someone else did a clean-up of the server and remove the whole directory, because that person did not see why the map exists(only 10Mb).
For Win98 I did work once or twice with a ICO-builder and had to fill every single pixel with a color. Not my cup of tea.
PS. I did check the PNG and got different answers. The original and the downloads were the same. The file is not suitable to use it as an Icon-file.

Be a good start if profesionalsoftware.com was professional enough to know how to spell professional. Sadly, when developers screw up over the simplest thing it's difficult to have faith in their ability to cope with stuff of greater ambition. Thanks GOTD, but no thanks.

MikeR,
I really enjoy your reviews on this site. You always come out as a very knowledgeable person and most of the time you have an impact on my decision to try the GOTD. However, today, I wish you had reviewed the software on the basis of its merit and on what it can do rather than on a subjective factor such as spelling. I am sure you know that most of the time the misspelling on domain names is due to the fact that the domain name with right spelling is already taken and not available.
Best, and keep those good reviews coming , I really enjoy reading them.

MikeR, Cezar Popescu here for Day One Software. I want to aplogize first to everybody for the confusion created with the name of our company.

The official name of our company as registered at the commerce office in our country is Day 1 Solutions SRL, because for some reason they would not allow us to use Day One Software although it was not taken at the moment. So we use Day One Software as our DBA name.

We do own the www.dayonesoftware.com domain but the previous owners of this domain spammed it and google has penalized it indefinetly. So we were forced to use another domain name. We use profesionalsoftware.com because it has been around for some time and because it is clean. So, yes, we tried to optimise for search engines using this domain.

And by the way, in most languages professional is spelled with a single s, so I would not call this a spelling error. :)

[ TK ],

Good research.

I ran into that, too, trying to buy a domain name of my choosing -- and they offered to RENT it to me, not sell!

Supposedly they can appeal to ICANN to release the domain name name from the squatter no charge IF you can prove you have a registered trademark, an established DBA Doing Business As, or acquired distinctiveness ... the appeal costing probably $20,000, I guess.

It's the will wild west at ICANN, like a bad scene from Start Trek "... I bet 200 quataloos that the pointy eared one will kill the dumb one ...."
