Well, that's sad ... I'm past being tired of programmers who cannot deal with environments other than their own ...

"... Setup was unable to create the directory "C:\documents and Settings\all Users\Documents\1AVShare". Error 5: Access denied ...
... Setup was not completed. Please correct the problem and run Setup again ...
... Rolling back changes ... [ exits ] ..."

Fascinating.

Their ability to download a trial also tanks at a blank screen ( from http://www.pcwinsoft.com/1AVShare/download.asp ), so I cannot even play with their offering as a trial.

Why trust programmers who cannot even overcome simple hurdles like downloading and installing?

Oh well.

Next.

So when I try and run the install program I get an error which locks up my system so I cant even type the code into notepad.... Deleted. Also the 5 or so apps that needed access during install was a bit worrying.

Thia software turns you computer into a server, very dangerous for my test, because I know how a server can be compromised by a hacker.

If you really want to share files, video, audio from your computer, do a peer to peer networking from your Win 7 or 10, much safer and faster sharing.

This way you control who is logged in your computer and what is doing at any time. You can disable them if they try to poke around your personal files.

GOTD always causes this problem...and states below: "disable the anti-virus suite and restart the computer....enable after download" do you know what a hassle that is?! so much time! and most often, that doesn't even work either. argh.

Reply   |   Comment by sawa  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+13)

sawa, Correct, some virus protection software after disabling needs to be restarted before and after by shutting down the computer and restarting it again.

Did a check to see if this program had been offered before and if so have a read of the comments.
It was offered as shown at the following link:-
https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/1avshare-1-7-7-71/

It is absolutely full of useful information, including three comments by Karl, it is hard to believe what a wonderful site this was for information.

Let's encourage people to make comments, and let's not mark them down when their comments are less than perfect, maybe then we'll go back to the quality site we once were lucky enough to have.

What is the default IP Port #?

Reply   |   Comment by Newbie  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-6)

Newbie, Seems to be 80.

I quote:

http://www.pcwinsoft.com/1avshare/user_guide/htm/web_server_settings.htm

The HTTP port for a web server is 80 by default and 1AVShare's web server will try to use that port as default as well, but if you already have a web server such as IIS or Apache running on your PC then 1AVShare will have to use another port which it will try and find automatically but you can define it up-front too.

@Sigrid.DE - The server is your computer (more accurately, on your computer); so, capacity/file-size, distance/hops are non-issues.
@Mememe - The files always reside on your computer; therefore, you never lose "free" access wiht/without the software. Unless your computer is stolen!

@Iliyan - Of course, Antivirus/Anti-malware/Anti-exploit software will interfere with installation of software that is meant to access or manipulate other files, processes and areas of your computer, etc. that also are targets of malicious software. All PCWinSoft installers, including 1AVShare's, are Digitally Signed, so you can "safely" disable your security software temporarily during installation. They are very unlikely to install malware, IMO. I've used most of their products for more than five years and have had no bad experiences with any of them... and I am VERY CAREFUL AND ATTENTIVE. [Note: I run my own "real" servers and do not use 1AVShare for that purpose.]

@Injeun - 1AVShare builds on features and functionalities already present in Windows. I suggest that you correct (figure out) whatever is preventing your creating a native Home Network before using ANY software that depends on your system working properly. From Windows XP, network setup has been *relatively* painless.

@seagrape - Only those files you have specifically included in your 1AVShare "server".

@Calli @Seb - So, why not 256-bit or even 2048-bit encryption? For the same reason that you don't keep your wallet/purse in a bank vault, guarded by armed security: The security is proportional to the risk. Any competent bad guy/gal targeting you specifically, doesn't care about 128/256-bit encryption. If they believe the data is valueable enough, they will keep at it. You and I probably are NOT being targeted SPECIFICALLY by anyone. When a bad guy/gal sees that the data they RANDOMLY searched for is encrypoted (even with 128-bit encryption) , they will simply move on and look for an unencrypted victim.

@glnz - TeamViewer is intended for much different purposes. However, it does have something similar: Unattended Access. Your files stay on your computer and therefore, of course, there is no file-size limit.

@Nick H , @Seb , @dudi1234 - Like many other kinds of 'software' (Python, some Virtual machines, Ámazon Cloud, OneDrive, etc.) this has to be installed to the "root" of the drive, i.e., C:\ .

jmjsquared,
An arrogant comment it ever there was one!
My comment was not regarding security it was the use of the word deterrence as many would be unfamiliar with it.

If as you state a program has to go in the "root" then the developer should state this is necessary.

If it has to go in the "root" then why was Nick H offered the choice of where to install it?

Reply   |   Comment by Seb  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

jmjsquared, as to your response to Calli, Amen, though we can't really blame folks like Calli for that type of question. Rather we should blame so-called "Security Experts" "Tech Journalists" and security software providers for creating this paranoia that causes most users to heap on so many layers of security that they make their own conflicts. Not ideal, but the common sense way: simple but good firewall, strong but not perfect AV and Anti-Spyware (it's easy to find one of each that won't conflict with each other) that will detect bad guys but not inundate you with false positives, decent encryption, don't open e-mails from people you don't know (and remember, the government doesn't send emails unless you give them your address ahead of time, and often not even then), be careful of what type of sites you visit, and use limited rights user accounts and/or rights dropping sofware. Or you can consider the sandboxing or virtual surfing approach. (DuckDuckGo it. I never say Google it, since Google spies on you). The bottom line is exactly what you said. Yes, the best hackers can get to you almost no matter what, but no, the best hackers aren't going to be interested in non-entities like you and me, and, when they're just trolling for unguarded wallets, so to speak, they'll see our money belts (again, so to speak) and leave us alone.

The dirty little reality of security is this: the best defense? You're a tiny fish and there are at least 1 billion in the pond. So use common sense and don't panic.

Sorry, let me back off a little. I do think the Calli's 256 complaint is a good one, though I'm not sure that 128 has been officially declared "cracked".

Reply   |   Comment by watcher13  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

jmjsquared, As already pointed out, I was given the option of where to install this software, if it has to be installed in root, this was not explained during the install process and would appear to go against your suggestion.

Reply   |   Comment by Nick H  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

@Nick H - You're right. I missed that part of your earlier comment and, its being a long time since installing 1AVFamily Products, I stand corrected.

@watcher13 - Yup, fear sells and that is what many "security" software purveyors bank [sic] on. We could discuss, compare, debate and opine for days and still never come up with "THE" security solution. As to the 128/256 thingy, I'll wager that someone, somewhere has cracked even a 2048-bit encryption. It's just a matter of computing power, time and money. [ASIDE: Did you read Space.com's recent article about China's Quantum-encryption Satellite? http://www.space.com/33760-china-launches-quantum-communications-satellite.html ]

@Seb - Arrogance?? This from a person who presumes so "many" other people don't know what "deterrence" means that s/he has to condescendingly "educate" them??? I offered my opinions. I am here only to learn and to share. Aren't, you?

Whoa this isn't as easy as they say with the port forwarding. I need to port forward in my wireless router and their comprehensive support page does a fair job explaining but 1) the program I'm trying to port is not in the support page unless it's 1AVSTREAMER I can't find 1AVSCENTER in the thousands of games it shows. I wonder if It even uses the same ports as 1AVSTREAMER? This got messy real fast with email issue also. Will set this aside till I have time to read up what I thought would be a 10 minute job to get it running.

Install like a charm on Win 7 Pro. 64 bit. Hmm setting will have to be manually changed. The info on what to do to my wireless router is non existent not sure what to do there can get to my router have admin rights but what am I changing? Email say my address is wrong but it isn't. My ISP uses IMAP instead of SNMP is this an issue? I changed the passwords for admin and guest but does leaving the vids,audio,docs...Does not changing those default PWs Leave my server as an open directory? That would be bad bad bad. Opps doesn't matter I'm not sure what to configure on my router and I'm not going to screw up every bodies connection to internet without knowledge of what the hell I'm doing but this program flopped me in IT technician level situations immediately. Hope they support has time to listen to half a brain and dangerous people like me who learn from the school of hard knocks. Thanks GAOTD I will toy with this one.

You can do same thing in win 10, just type in the search box "remote access" in your control panel, and check just 2 boxes in the window that will pop up, "1-allow remote connections" and "2-allow remote assistance", that it is.
Set names (users) and passwords and is done. All of the accesses are via 256 bits encryption.
I nave a network of over 500 users so far and works like charm. Nobody can intrude without me giving access to the computer.

I've had a look at the description, which was not very informative. For a start there is no mention of how much storage space is available, or how long the licence is valid for. Secondly 128 bit encryption is a bit week and the so called instruction videos are of such poor quality that for anyone that isn't familiar with using this type of software isn't very much help, the picture quality is crap and the sound is even worse which doesn't inspire confidence in the product. Won't be installing as I have my own server in place. The poor encryption would put me off using this for anything other than non-personal files.

Ridiculous offer!
total storage capacity not given, nor max single file size, max data usage/month. Nothing detailed at all.
Why bother when the big names offer all of this and lots more.
A web server some 10,000 miles and 500 hops away would make my 1TB account with Micro.. seem a lightning speed service (which it certainly is not).

Mememe, no limit to send by email is about as generous as anybody would need. Oh, of course I forgot to consider using those utilities that split up a titanic 500 MB file into - how many chunks ? to suit mail clients :-)
To share, exchange, data through a web server is dead-easy and as no one expects truly unlimited storage space nor unlimited traffic I'd say the unspecified promises by today's donor are worth less than the free services of Dropbox & Co.

Reply   |   Comment by Iliyan  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Hello Iliyan,
The issue is most likely caused by an anti-virus system blocking the installation. You may try the following workaround.

Please, carefully follow these steps:

1) disable the anti-virus suite and restart the computer. You need to disable all the anti-virus systems if you have more than one installed. Make sure it won't start automatically with the computer.

2) download the program archive once again and extract the contents to a dedicated folder

3) Carefully follow the installation instructions in the readme.txt file.

There should be no problems with the installation. Make sure you switch your anti-virus back on after the installation. Please mind that all the files are checked for viruses beforehand, so you may rest assured, the installation is 100% clean.

Sorry for the inconvenience

Injeun,

All computers in your network...
1) need to be under the same workgroup, and
2) need to be password protected.

Once this is done, go to town sharing and mapping drives and/or folders!

Reply   |   Comment by GordN  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Injeun,
In most cases with windows 7 and newer; it's just open control panel, network and sharing, advanced sharing options; turn on network discovery, file and printer sharing, and turn off password protected sharing, and most of the time you're fine. Windows authentication over a network doesn't work all that well when the computers aren't on a "Domain", which is why I recommend turning off the password protected sharing. attempting to login as user on the other system tends to fail 99% of the time when password protected sharing is on.

if all windows 7 and up, either setup a home group on all the PCs, or none. mixed doesn't work very well if at all. if it's a network of mixed windows OSs between XP -10, there can be no home groups on any PC, just make sure the work groups are all the same name, and that Network discovery and file sharing is turned on., and you're all connected to through the same router/switch. You shouldn't need to do anything special beyond that.

Well, interesting, and I'm surprised TeamViewer or LogMeIn don't have something like this. (Or, if they do, I'm not smart enough to find it.)

One issue is that this won't work for my PC on Verizon DSL because I don't have a fixed, public IP address. See the instructions at
http://pcwinsoft.com/1AVShare/user_guide/HTM/ip_address.htm

Question - do my files stay on my PC or are they first uploaded to a server?

Can we know more about the security?

Reply   |   Comment by glnz  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

glnz, teamviewer does indeed have this functionality even in the free version. Logmein also does this in the paid version. I've not used hamachi since they went paid only, so I've no idea if logmein put it back when they decided to offer a free version again. it's been years, so I've forgotten how it all works on logmein, but I remember it being similar to teamviewer's filesharing.
for teamviewer it requires both people to have teamviewer accounts, and be on each other's contact list. right click on their name name and you'll see a file transfer option. alternatively there's also a file transfer option on the main window, just punch in their partner id select file transfer and click the connect button. bandwidth is obviously throttled though on free versions.

I can't really speak to direct or not direct connect portion of your comment though, should be mentioned somewhere in the EULA/TOS, or somewhere on the website though, I would think.

Reply   |   Comment by imzesok  –  7 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-3)

glnz, after looking at the user manual for it, it appears to just be a http/ftp-server program(it has both functions), so looks like everything stays on your pc and is directly uploaded to/from the authorized user.

Just run the setup and it installs and registered itself without any problems.

It may have had no problems but it installs itself on my C drive, no options available, a most definite No-No as my C drive is for my system and not for my programs.
On viewing the help video instead of using my default browser it assumes I use Internet Explorer.
Really hate it when programs are so ill mannered.

On opening an easy on the eye interface is presented, even so I haven't a clue how to use it.
The help video certainly wasn't much use as even on a decent size monitor I was unable to read the text, to make matters worse there was no sound.

Up to now haven't been able to find information regarding maximum amount of storage and whether or not the licence has an expiry date.

Going to give it a go to see if it will be any use to me in the long term, haven't a clue where to start.

Seb, I also like to control what software can install where on my computer. Soon after I had accepted the EULA I was given the option of installing the software where I chose to.

However during the installation process the software said that some other running software needed to be closed to complete the installation, without further explanation as to why this needed to be closed. This included security software. It is my computer and I run security software for very obvious reasons. I cancelled the installation, I do not install software that wants to control or seriously affect the way that I run security software without a reason given as to why the software needed to do so. If for example it would cause a conflict in .NET or something similar I might understand why it wants to close security software, giving no reason or possible conflict is not good enough.

Seb, I agree with you 1000%. I haven't used IE since 1992, and it seems like every single program out there assumes- wrongly- that it's the net user's choice for some god forsaken reason. Any software that auto makes this misassumption gets treated with a grain of rock salt by me, as the author's are obviously microsoft gullible, and that makes the whole package very iffy by experience.

Nick H,
Found out why I didn't get offered an option on where to install.
I had install the program when it was offered previously and although it had been removed it had left a link in my Internet folder.
I have folders such as photo, video, PDF contain links to programs associated with that type of program and they reside on my desktop.
It would appear when installing it recognised that it had been installed before and went to put it in the same directory.

It was offered before as shown at the following link:-

Seb, It seems like the previous installation may have left some traces in the registry which were picked up by this installation and caused it to be installed in your C:\ drive. Some built in uninstallers and Windows program uninstaller do not leave you with a 100% thorough uninstall. If you don't already use it the free Revo Uninstaller, or the paid for but sometimes offered on sites like this Soft Organiser, do a better job of cleaning up.

Downloaded & installed fine on Win 10 pro x64. Activation is done automatically upon installation.

First glance you're faced with a rather simple early windows interface with 5 "tip of the day" dialogue box. Will have to tinker around to see the functionality of the server itself. Seems to have a healthy help file with access to video tutorials but we shall see!

Will comment more in awhile.

JK, I found the videos played to fast and without sound difficult to follow. Hope you will return with some updated comments, thanks.

Was this supposed to be a comment? I'm trying to find out if as well as how well it does or does not work, like everyone else! "It installs" helps no one!
