I love this giveaway. I have been wanting to buy a program that rips videos for my ipod and zune but I pretty cheap. I started using this yesterday and am very happy with it.

A lot of good that does me - I received the e-mail referencing this offer today at 4:26 AM EDT - *after* the offer expired! Why even send an e-mail about it after the promotion is over?? I checked the headers, there was no mail delay. And it turns out to be an ironic offer - just yesterday I was trying to extract a sound bite from YouTube - this would have solved that conundrum in a second. I'll suggest that everyone who is interested in seeing the daily update make it a point to check the web site - apparently the normally concise and reliable summary presented via e-mail is actually UNreliable.

Whilst overall I rate GAOTD as a fantastic resource and have installed far too many of the giveaways to be able to devote the necesary time to them all to get the best out of of them,I do deplore those who, immediately post negative comments especially
if they then admit to not trying a particular program out. OK yes there are in many cases freeware alternatives available
and yes there have been too many screensavers and programs similar to previous offerings, but I am going to criticise the youtubeget program.
It did not work for me except to insinuate itself (even when not running) into my system so that the simple task of copying and pasting any youtube URL resulted in the program annoyingly opening and trying to take over control of my mouse right click function.I put up with it for a while then uninstalled it.

I really enjoy seeing freeware alternatives on here - what they do is give me, and others a chance to get a similar piece of software for free after this offer has expired... for example, I might not need this piece of software for another year or so and I do not want it sitting around taking up space that whole time, so I usually save all the links to the freeware sites I see on here in a text file and refer back to them when I need them. Personally it doesn't matter if the freeware is better or not, if the program works I am happy.

... seems like you people don't appreciate hard work...
i myself do light programming (i would do alot but i dont see the need to learn alot at once) but i myself know it is not easy to build a commercial grade product.. how would you guys/gals feel about working for 3 months on a small (in size and maybe in options) program that has alot of complex coding (smaller u can make it and cleaner the code means the better it can run) and u decide to go commercial with it and have it for say.. $25 .. thats cheap for most any program .. and it gets knocked on by people that only want something thats got ALOT of options or can do ALOT , otherwise the just use a free version.... give the program a chance and maybe you will like it better..... of course there is a free way to do stuff.. there always is but the program that is pay to have means that it is maintained and not just updated when someone find a BAD bug... having a commercial product usually means that if YOU find a problem (if the coder hasn't already) they will find a way to fix it or at least note it down for a future main update..
but sure there might be little problems (why do you think some people give out free type versions 'like it is on here'... to find and fix bugs) think about that... whats faster? 1 man looking for a bug or 50 people....

well thats my 2 cents.. i myself have not tried it as i don't have a need to get videos....
peace,
Night

#46-wha Bravo - I couldn't have said it better! But, personally, I'm confused. I've read #11-Irina's comment a number of times. Where is America mentioned at ALL???? I think an apology should be offered to Irina by #23-CreamyPretzel who needs to download a copy of "Reading Is Fundamental".

Thank you to the Giveawayoftheday team for always Always ALWAYS putting up with the whiners. Thank you for the hard work you consistently undertake to improve our computer experience. Thanks to the many companies that are allowing all of us the opportunity to try new programs for free. And last, but not least, thanks to the nice people who share their knowledge of free programs and offer assistance to those of us that are not knowledgeable as newbies to the computerworld. They remember that we are all new at something sooner or later. Try to remember the Golden Rule as many of us were taught it, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

I love the program. Thank you for offering it YouTubeGet :o)

It's not a coincidence that this has a lot in common with YouTube Music Downloader, because it's the same company as this giveaway and also the other Youtube downloader 3 weeks ago:

Just another example of the common Chinese business practice of saturating the market with pseudo-competition by selling basically the same software under many skins and front companies. (It's also the same guy as previous GAOTDs Reezaa MP3 converter, Easy SWF to MP3 Converter, and Easy 3GP Converter.)

The name calling is not revelant to the purpose of the comments section and really only serves no purpose other than to show ignorance and childishness. If you cannot comment regarding your experience with the offered program and possible alternatives then please be quiet and let persons with something relevant to say do so!

This is junk software who's converter doesn't work! Why bother? Personally I know of several alternative ways to grab these videos and my converter works even though it's a free program.
But most importantly, I can see no reason to use up good hard drive space for the garbage on YouTube! Undoubtedly a thumbs down offer here today.

General Flash video info in case it helps anyone...
The Flash video format has a few variations, & can be hosted in different ways on-line, so if you go to a different site than Youtube your mileage will vary - you may need different tools &/or methods, & sometimes the only alternative is to record the video window as it plays.

Why convert? There are different Flash video players, but they’re not for everybody or every situation, plus if you pass a video file on to someone else, you can’t count on them having anything besides maybe Windows Media Player. Of course you can ask them to install whatever, or do it for them, but in my personal experience that’s the very last thing I want to do - they download a virus or something and have problems weeks, maybe month’s later & you’re to blame.

On Quality... Flash video quality varies quite a bit, even if the only site you visit is Youtube. If it’s something you really want, once you have the video in another format you can filter it improving visual quality [check VirtualDub.org], or you can convert it to a higher frame rate [say 30 instead of 14 - 15]... this can make it look smoother playing on your PC.

RE: On-line conversion or download sites... I don’t have an opinion personally, but I’ve read of others having privacy concerns.

There are hordes of freeware apps that do this, better.

Why browse through this little, limited-funtionality browser when you stumble across a video in Firefox and with one click, you can download/convert it?

YoutubeGet is designed to do two things - it lets you download Flash video, & it lets you convert that video to some other format. The downloading part is relatively easy from Youtube - it’s much like downloading any other file. Converting Flash files is more difficult, but for that YoutubeGet is yet another front end (GUI or interface) for ffmpg - the same ffmpg used by most of the alternatives, free or otherwise recommended every time one of these video-type programs is offered at GOTD.

Ffmpg is a Linux, command line (in Windows a DOS box - no GUI) program for encoding video that can be compiled for Windows & other OSes. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ffmpeg] [http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/]

So what’s the difference between them all? The appearance and the way the interface works. YoutubeGet appears to be written in Visual Basic (VB6STKIT.DLL is included), which may be why the Convert program wouldn’t work on my PC in Vista Home Prem SP1. Conversion did work as part of the download process. [to correct the problem I deleted files in the program folder that were already present as newer versions in Windows\system32\: “MSCOMCTL.ocx”, “msimg32.dll”, “UXTHEME.DLL”, “VB6STKIT.DLL”.]

Just like every other video downloading program in existence, you have to tell YoutubeGet what to download. Some software changes the curser or adds pop-up hints when you mouse over anything Flash (what Youtube uses), which in my opinion is annoying, but regardless you’re telling the program what to download/grab. YoutubeGet has a drop box or you can copy/paste, just like maybe half the other Flash video download programs. Consider it a matter of style - some like it, others don’t. The drop-box looks like an icon with a down arrow, & you can turn it on/off in Settings. Otherwise when you select & copy the sharing url from a page on Youtube, the “Add New Download” window opens where you select options including re-encoding to another format. The developer’s web site has a tutorial explaining it all.

Finally YoutubeGet is a fairly simple program that doesn’t add a lot of junk to your system - The installation is more a convenience to add start menu icons as everything is self-contained in the program folder. Un-installing may work better from the program supplied short-cut - using Windows add/remove programs leaves behind the program folder & icons in the start menu that you’ll have to manually delete, but that’s hardly worth mentioning.

Well, it triggered this on my Vista Premium: Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other security threats. Harmful programs can try to attack Windows by attempting to run (also known as execute) code from system memory locations reserved for Windows and other authorized programs. These types of attacks can harm your programs and files.

I LOVE when people here offer FREE alternatives. It allows me to better evaluate the software and compare it to something that's currently out there. Why should I get something (even though it's free today) ...if something out there can do the job BETTER and EASIER. AND ...it will be FREE forever ...so I can be secure in using the sofware if system crashes.

I spent hundreds (if not thousands) $$$ on software ...only to be unhappy with it; it didn't do everything I hoped or had some quirks I didn't care for) ...only to later discover a perfect FREE alternative existed.

Some of you people just DON'T GET IT: Just because something is more expensive (or someone charges money for it), doesn't mean it's better.

My EXPERIENCE: Windows XP SP3

Installed fine ...but program installation defaults to the C:\ root directory ...BAD. Who writes programs that do that these days?

Downloads a video ...but no OPTIONS/prefrerences for specifying default download folders (or default media files for conversion). It always seems to want to save and get videos from the C:\Root install directory. So you have to go through several levals of clicking through folders finding the target.

Conversion seems to work ONLY in conjunction with download. The CONVERT function DOES NOT seem to work as "stand alone" (ie, once you download a *.FLV ...it will NOT convert it). Program says it can do this, and tries to ...but nothing I do will convert an already downloaded file to another fomat. So if you didn't specify you wanted to convert at the time of download, you are out of luck. HUGE MINUS.

No integration with explorer, so you will be cutting and pasting till your fingers are sore. Will be fine if you want to download an occassioinal file ...but a pain for simplifying the process.

Program was SO SOto begin with ...more trouble than it's worth. Once the CONVERT function didn't work for me, I gave up on it.

IN SUMMARY ...NO THANKS!!!

Hey people:
1) Rule 1 of computing: don´t clutter your system up with unnecessary software
2) Youtube video: paste the URL into vixy.net No software required.
3) Historians don´t say the US won any wars in the last 100 years. I think the war of independence may have been the last victory the US had. In all other wars they played a major role, but please don´t forget that other countries made massive sacrifices that we can´t hold a candle to: for example in WW1 New Zealand lost more men per head of population than any other country, and in WW2 when Russia attacked they literally mowed the Germans down in a few months and took Berlin by themselves...which was when Hitler killed himself. That was the end of the war!
And let´s not get into too much detail about how Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq worked out.
Add to that, the world is hardly a better place for any of this. How about a little peace on the planet, and a little sanity about software.

#42, get your facts right (or go back to school) Britain are STILL paying the USA back for WW11, for lend-lease stuff and food aid.

Shame on a country that is full of generations of immigrants fleeing poverty and persecution (mainly from Great Britain and Ireland).

Thanks GAOTD, I already use DVDSoft and it updates regularly as YouTube change their formats.

However ... If you want to convert the youtube flv to mp3 you can just go to http://www.flv2mp3.com/ and do the conversion there.

I haven't tried the software today, I have one of these famous freeware alternatives and I think it works just fine. But I'm very glad that GAOTD exists and doing what they're doing. Sometimes this perfect software turns up and then the day gets a little better. And I'm also glad to learn about freeware alternatives to todays giveaway among the comments, if I've been gone and didn't get the giveaway in time.

Actually, both GAOTD and freeware are - free - so why complain when people share this information, about good and bad experience of free software? It's just good to know.

And a gas price report from Sweden. We buy litres, but I did some calculating and one gallon costs 8,19 USD here. But I won't go to USA to buy gas for my car anyway...

Theres been so many youtube downloader/converters on GAOTD but you DO NOT need to install any software to grab the video and convert, never mind pay for software to do this.

When you upload a video to Youtube, it creates 3 versions of your video...

2 FLVs [For Streaming] compatible with different versions of flash player. If you install a FREE FLV Player, you can watch these on your PC with NO NEED TO CONVERT.
This is my favorite flv player...
http://www.sothinkmedia.com/flv-player/

1 MP4 [IPOD, PSP, ZUNE..] If you have Quicktime/Itunes, you could watch this on your PC and take it on the go in your iPod with NO NEED TO CONVERT.
Download Quicktime...
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

Free VLC Media Player can play both FLV and MP4
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

WHY NO USE A CONVERTER?... You may ask
These files are created by youtube from the original video's source, therefore, these videos will have the lowest filesize. Converers will add filesize but not any quality because quality can only be lost from the source video, not gained.

SO HOW DO I DOWNLOAD THESE VIDEO FILES?
No need to install software to download. Theres several WEBSITES taht can download the video.
This is my favorite...Download youtube video that can be put right onto an IPOD with no need to convert.

I believe you missed the point in people mentioning freeware alternatives to the program on offer here. It might be free for today but if for some reason you have to format the HDD & reinstall windows tomorrow, you do not get back this software for free. On the other hand, the freeware alternatives are always available.

I also think some free way is availabe in any time. Just like some we can paste youtube url to convert flv to other format. but the online conversion has some low speed and quality. I real like some one like this YouTube video download and converter, not like this Youtube Get software.
http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/youtubeget/#comments.

But some functions are much better than the Youtube Get.
* Support browse video by category, author, time, language, channels, tags and custom keywords.
* Built-in scheduler
You may as well schedule the download and conversion tasks to be executed automatically, even when you are not around. Downloading is followed by conversion to the format of your choice and uploading videos to a mobile device (if needed).
* Optimize profile for differnet mobile device
Such as iPod, Zune, PSP, Creative Zen Vision, Archos,iRiver, Pocket PC, Smart Phone... and more
Support almost all audio & video format, such as AVI, WMV, MP4, 3GP, 3G2, MP3, M4A...and more

COOL!
I've been looking for a piece of legal software designed for the sole purpose of steeling protected content from a specifically targeted website.

Maybe I should write a program that scours specific record labels and lets me save all the .cda files it finds. Then I can legally sell it to the public too.

What's on deck for tomorrow, GrimsPing???

#11 I like hearing about the freeware alternatives, especially since my system crashed last week and I lost all of my "free" software programs I downloaded here. Now, more than ever, I value the comments and links provided here for freeware. Why would you be so closed minded as to only consider one piece of software anyway?

My personal thanks to those of you who do spend the time to comment on the software being given away, freeware or just other alternatives. In the several months I have been visiting this site I have learned a lot and found the comments to be just as valuable as the actual software being given away.

I've tried the program, and I like it. I can overlook the microwave like "DING!" that tells me my popcorn, oops, download is done, but - am I missing something, because I cant seem to find where the Hell the downloads WENT! Anyone else having this issue?

Obviously, Tiffany is the VoiceofReason......

This program is simply another another instance of someone taking an opensource program/concept, modifying it and then adding a price tag to it in hopes they can sell a few to a few of the uneducated who don't know any better. That's the reason you see e so many "free alternative" comments to a lot of the programs here at GAOTD.

#12 Talk about harsh - what a comment. One of my main likes in this forum is finding out freeware alternatives. Sometimes I've missed a great giveaway and thanks to the comments, I've been able to install a freeware (which half the time are even better). There are just as many cons as there are pros with these giveaways. Like although they're free, you cannot update (or you revert back to a trial version), no technical support etc. And what if it crashes or you need to format or reinstall the OS? It's the variety and spice that makes me come back and view these comments each day. In a contradictory way, I must like your comment because it got my attention to write all this.

#4 Thanx so much for bringing this to my attention. I've had Free Download Manager (FDM) installed for over a year (my favourite too) and never took notice of the Flash Video Downloads and converter. I use FDM for all my downloads (a download accelerator). Have you noticed the new upgraded version. It includes Software Informer (SI) which gives a list of all your programs installed and alerts you if any are ready to be upgraded. #s 11, 23, 32, 34, etc. I like the idea of international showdowns. I thinks it builds this great relationship and understanding that although we come from diff places, we all have the exact same base tendencies to snatch a free item and scratch someone that tries abusing our nationality. keep it up. I'm from the US.

I dont see the advantage of this program at all. Least, not for me. I have been using "Youtube Downloader" for about 2 months now. I have been very happy with it. It does the same thing as this offering, except Youtube Downloader is free, EVERYDAY. http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/ Is super easy to use and converts to multiple file formats. Anyhow, thanks GAOTD for the free softwares, but today, I will pass on this one.

I did a DL of a youtube as a .flv but afterward the converter wouldn't add this .flv or any I already had to convert to anything else. When I click add I get nothing.I probably will leave it in till tommorow to make sure it is not something with the registration but if it stays like it is now I will uninstall it.So my rating is not working in Vista so for me a piece of crap.
This if for the America bashers.
Stay in your country & it like America since you apparently think America is better than your country.Don't expect us Americans to do it for you.America would be far better off if we had stayed out of the rest of the worlds business.I don't think 911 would have happened if we did.
Good thing we entered WW2 or most of the world would have had Hitler for their ruler .At least till he exterminated them.He did plan to exterminat everyone but Germans even his allies. Those America joined were losing the war no matter how you want to think it was.
A lot of our American ancestors died to make America what it is.
That is what it takes to make a country like America sacrifice of blood ,lives & sweat.Something most countries citizens have not done or they wouldn't want to move here.So instead of bashing America fix your own country or die trying.

running vista premium….downloaded ok registered ok
You can remove the annoying green icon in settings if you like.
BUT although the download and convert to avi worked ie, it downloaded and converted the video there is no sound with the video tried it 3 times on different videos. The audio options are greyed out in the saving area.
anyone else finding this behaviour?

I believe you missed the point in people mentioning freeware alternatives to the program on offer here. It might be free for today but if for some reason you have to format the HDD & reinstall windows tomorrow, you do not get back this software for free. On the other hand, the freeware alternatives are always available.

I come to GOTD almost every day to check what the wonderful guys at GOTD have to offer us and I try to get the best feel for what I'm in for if I download and install the progams GOTD offers by reading the comments and rating. If I'm not interested in the program i don't download it and look forward to tomorrows GOTD. You only show that GOTD has made you a spoiled brat buy complaining about what they are offering you FREE!! Those kind of comments are self serving and of no help to others wanting valuable evaluations of the software.
