The ripper is really easy to use and a little better than most others. Fast speed, flexible clip and merge function, surprising picture capture...

Does anybody know if this software also reduces large DVD files to fit a regular 4.7 GB disk ?

Great program! I have been ripping dvds to my ipod since I downloaded it yesterday and all have transferred without issue. Video and audio sync up perfectly and quality is beautiful.

I mistakenly gave this program a thumbs down by accident (that's what I get for trying to rip a dvd, check email, and check out giveawayoftheday all at the same time). TWO THUMBS UP is what it deserves!

Installed on XPSP2. Runs fine (if a little slow, but it's not a fast machine). Can't play any of the ripped files (tried avi, Divx, and Real Player). All the players return an error. Trying Quicktime now, but I don't have high hopes.

Is there no simple program to just create a video file from a DVD for viewing directly on a PC? I don't want to learn the arcana of video transfer and file types, I just want to be able to make a watchable copy a workout DVD so I don't have to drag the disk with me when I travel.

THE COMPUTER FROZE - DVD Ripper showed "trojanlike behavior"

Installed it in my Winxp SP2 computer and it seemed OK.

But Comodo firewall reported that "Xilsoft DVD ripper ultimate 5" showed trojanlike behavior in trying to connect to internet. So I denied access. At that moment, the computer froze. I restarted and it froze again. At fourth restart I was able to reach the control panel and uninstalled this program. Thereafter everything was back to normal again.

I feel sad about having to uninstall because it seemed really useful, but apparently it has trojanlike components that may be misused for stealing information from the computer if not using it as a relay. I don't feel comfortable about a company without any adress or identifier - especially when it plants trojans.

My computer has never reacted so before after installing a program.

I was looking for something like this to convert DVDs to the mpg format. Tested it on an old home video and it encodes very well. The only problem I've had with it is that the sound ends up being a bit tinny in the output file.

Other than that, this program works great.

Hello, conspiracy fans...

#88 You realize China already OWNS you in 101 ways even with the lights out and your doors locked? And you do realize if there WERE a conspiracy here they would more likely take the "back door of the back door," in other words...a more non-direct route? Such as hacking third party apps or networks from other countries? Something a little less, eh...traceable?

Not to say there aren't probably things going on out there that would make your hair stand up and James Bond choke on his egg rolls though...because indeed, there probably are.

Sure, we will all eventually have to face the mandatory speaking of Chinese in a few years when the soldiers come door to door to deliver the imperial orders and regional imperatives after the radiation dies down sufficiently. (Either we comply, or we will go naked and not be able to repair or maintain a single article we own besides maybe a simple trowel, since everything, including some of our babies, comes from China.) But until then (say, 2012) you can sleep comfortably on your Chinese-made pillow and just worry about the fact that those now living in what is currently the free world are enjoying their final days of "liberty vacations."

In the meantime, try to develop a taste for monkey meat, fresh dog, and leaches, and you'll adapt more easily. And remember: never question the Central Authority, unless you have a back up planet to move to.

And up to this point, some might have assumed this was all simply an attempt at humor. Far from it.

Enjoy your software.

Program is easy enough but has anyone been able to rip any video with multi-channel (e.g. 5.1) audio? I only see mono and stereo (2-channel) audio options. This is even with the "AC3 audio" profile which will rip only AC3 audio. Did I miss something?

I "NeoTrace It!" the website and came up with SoftLayer Technologies Inc. in Dallas, Texas. It does not mean that the company is in Dallas; all it means is that the website host is in Dallas. NeoTrace is software that is no longer sold and "backtracks" an IP address.

Also you guys delete all my post here about problems with your downloads; why is that?

Folks,

Sorry about 2nd post ... I stand corrected ... when I try to load it on laptop that IS NOT connected to internet ... the program would not install. I am griping becuase if GAOTD wants to give us these things free why not let us Install a program without Internet Connection and Register it. I am alos suspicious of this net set-up ... GAOTD used to provide software without the new gimmick of being online. Also, I had a program called "tmf3w3g0.com" launch itself ... but my Norton caught it on my desktop and Quarentin it. So GAOTD what gives with these "MALWARE" Freewares.

Thanks,
G!

I don't know if it was the program specifically or the person's ad that led me to the site, but,Thank G-d had a damned good anti-virus running when I went to run the install as PCillin immediately quarantined the program and announced a Trojan invasion. NOT HAPPY. Evidently considering today's free download was coming from China I got what it was worth..

Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate is a nice program that fits in between software like yesterday’s Aplus offering, & a more complicated approach, using more than 1 application for almost total flexibility. In-other-words, if the Aplus type of program is too simple, doesn’t do just what you want, or if you just want more options, Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate would be a good next step. It won’t replace the better ripping programs available for backing up your DVDs, & if price is not a problem, it won’t replace Nero Recode for automation & speed converting your DVDs to 1 of the mp4 formats (~ 20 minutes using 2-passes to Nero Digital with automatic cropping, resize, audio conversion, subs you can turn off, frame-rate reduction to 24 fps, plus auto sizing the file to fit on a CD for example).

DVD Ripper Ultimate uses the same free code libraries as all but one of the previous GOTD video converters, but offers some nice options they left out... You can manually crop the picture (cut off the letterboxing) but you’re limited a bit when it comes to the final frame size. It lets you add FX & adjust the color, which is nice, but doesn’t have a simple setting to expand the colors used by your DVD video from the TV color space/range to that used by PCs & everything else. In fairness it may do it automatically, but in that case it should let you turn it off - many people play DivX with their DVD players hooked up to their TVs. [That’s more a suggestion than a criticism since previous converters wouldn’t allow adjustment at all.] In Vista 32 Home Prem SP1, previewing a title in the lower right corner brought Windows out of Aero mode.

DVDs have 2 aspect ratios: 4:3 & 16:9. Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate will use the size preset you choose, read the aspect from the DVD, and if your chosen frame size is 4:3, add letter-boxing to make sure everything looks right. If you choose the 480 X 272 (16:9) frame size, you’ll get whatever letter-boxing is there on the original - most Wide Screen DVDs are wider than 16:9 so there’s letter-boxing added before it goes on DVD. Be careful to watch the frame size box when you start converting (the button says “Start Ripping”) - the program has a habit of reverting to Auto... if it does, cancel & re-set the size to what you want.

It’d be nice if they gave you full freedom over frame sizes, but that carries a price: you’d first need to expand the DVD’s picture to proper size, crop it, reduce the size while keeping the aspect ratio, then make sure the frame dimensions are divisible by 4, 8, or 16 depending on the codec.

Installation is pretty self contained - nothing but start menu icons really installed outside the 27 meg in the program folder. Doesn’t seem to have or need any unusual processes/programs running according to Systems Internals Process Explorer. Since it is at least partly based on free program code, maybe the folks that can’t get it to run have something else already installed and running that’s using the same files the Xilsoft software depends on? Or maybe different versions installed to their Windows\System32 folder?

Todays ripper works well. I've ripped both audio and video discs with sucess. both are of excellent quality.

One of the things I like about today's giveaway is that you can use the registration code to register the demo that you can download from Xilisofts home page:

http://www.xilivideo.com/dvd-ripper-ultimate.html

I don't need to say what this means, but definitely one i'll be keeping for a long time, despite doing frequent formats.

Another interesting fact; you can register the program in your own name as opposed to using the giveawayoftheday name. (Not that it really matters)

9 out of 10

I've never ever bought an illegal video. I much prefer supporting the artists who create the work; plus i'm guaranteed a quality product. However, what really gets up my nostrils is the minutes long lecture about not buying ripped videos that you get with most DVD films these days. It's so annoying because the ones who buy the genuine DVD are unlikely to be the sorts who buy dodgy ones. I once saw a DVD that someone had ripped from live showing and was shocked when someone walked past the screen several times during the film. So this software is going to be used to create copies (backups) of my favorite (purchased) films minus all the c*** I'll also be able to edit in all the extra cuts you get with genuine DVD's, thus getting a fuller film. (eg Road to Perdition has several interesting cut scenes included on a seperate disc. I'm looking forwards to splicing all of it together using this software). I've done a test run at cutting the advert for piracy and it works well. (though it took me ages to do, lol)

Thank you Xilisoft for an excellent product, and also thanks to the giveaway team for bringing yet more useful software. I'll be evaluating this product against others that have been given away (those that I still have)to see if it's worth buying eventually.

To those who complain about getting too many of these rippers; surely it's a great thing to be able to test lots of different products, so that you can see through experience which are the best. That way, when updates are made available, you'll know which ones are worth spending your hard earned cash on. That's what I THINK the giveaway project is for.

The first DVD I ripped came out in French audio accidentally though which was pretty funny.

Does rip slowly, had issue trying to create higher quality, probably due to space issues. Will experiment more later. Thank you for a well-written product.

G said at comment 88 : "Frankly I’m wary of anything from China that has an automatic updater ..."
Just go to Tools/Preference and SIMPY UNCHECK those two :
1."Get disc info from server while loading disc automatically " and 2. "Check for update automatically"

There may be better Rippers outthere - free or shareware - but I think thisone fits my "average user" needs ( at least for the moment ).
I like its professional/explicit GUI. It tooked 3 hrs to rip a protected! (but not Blu-ray)1,5 hrs DVD into a good quality DivX file.
I guess it's not so bad for ripping+PLUS!+converting .
It's also true that it "eated" 95% of my processor during those operations . (but my PC is not too competitive anyway )

Thanks GAOTD!
With (at least!)6-7 excellent softwares downloaded, from here, per year ... You give us "space/volume problems"!( on our computers of course ) ;)

Let me clarify my previous statement by adding that IMO none of the SW offered here should ever need to phone home or disable your connection if it can't. Especially as we are not able to update free offers here.
Serious testers should consider always warning potential downloaders of suspisious behaviors in their reviews. Thank you.
And thanks to GAOTD staff for their tireless effort. Cheers.

The Download, Unzip, Install and registration went as smooth as creamy butter.
I normally use DVD FAB 5 for Ripping and Burning. It does an excellent job and has some tools for transferring to portables. Well, so does Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate 5. Being that I purchased DVD FAB 5 and Xilisoft is free and is just as fast, that in itself means today's offering is a keeper.
I am still in process of going through all the things Xilisoft will do, however, I have not experienced anything of a negative nature.
Thus, Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate 5 is equal to the Rip and Burn Job of DVD FAB 5 and will do a wide variety of other tasks that DVD FAB 5 can not. Thumbs up to Xilisoft & GOTD.
And what difference does it make if the software is from China, USA, Russia, Germany or Timbuktu. If it works, it works.....

no one reading these comments should be naive about the level of professionally subsidized hacking that exists.

The link below is for the article “Virus from China the gift that keeps on giving” from the February 15, 2008 San Fransisco Chronicle.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/02/15/BU47V0VOH.DTL&type=business

I don’t intend for the above to be taken as China bashing at all. And I am not commenting on today’s program offering - I don’t need it and I am not qualified to comment on it. We all need to aware of the issues - a few reminders don’t hurt anyone.

You know, GAOTD usually pays people to be allowed to distribute their software. I'm wondering if the abundance of Chinese software here could be because the Chinese are paying GAOTD rather than the other way round. That would explain a lot. (Victor, is that why you run so many of these?)

If people wonder why we even care, do your homework with Google. Try keywords like "chinese" "infowar" and "trojan". Frankly I'm wary of anything from China that has an automatic updater, because if China ever gets into it with the US, how long do you think it will be before the Fourth Department of the PLA GSHQ recruits commercial Chinese software vendors into their Special Cyber Force to distribute their payload? (after all its not like our side hasn't done the same thing, eg with that swiss encryption scandal that broke a few years ago)

Other countries, I'm not so bothered about. To some extent you need to be wary of anything that could be connected to the RBN, but I've never seen any signs of that on GAOTD. Code from France, Norway, Germany - great, lets have more of it. So please don't pull the xenophobia card to redirect criticism of the Chinese. There is stuff going on that people need to take seriously.

Maybe we should move this discussion to the forums...

Sorry folk's but I can't join the China software bashing today. I've been dealing with Xilisoft Corporation for well over a year now with great success.
Point made, point rejected in regards to this company. They make good stuff that does exactly what it's supposed to do. I'd be happy to grab this but we bought in at Xmas time and it works perfectly at what we need it for.
Anybody needing a good ripper should grab this one and leave todays paranoia in the dust.

If you wanted some info on them, just do a who.is search
http://who.is/whois-com/ip-address/xilisoft.com/

Just because its made it China doesn't mean its bad. If you avoid China, you better avoid everything in the US. ROFL

Seems to be fairly good software with a nice clean interface. Note: This is the same company as ImTOO.

Other good DVD rippers include HandBrake (after decryption, hasn't been working lately). Auto Gordian Knot (Auto GK). Auto GK rips only in avi and takes a while, but you can select different languages and also the audio quality and subtitles.

This program is good for beginners that don't know much about codecs, and quality.

As a follow up to my comment # 80. The final install forder was under 30 MB. That is not too bad for users that don't have this type of software. My only question is how many dvd rippers and/or video converters does one need? I have so many of there applications either downloaded from GAOTD or I am using freeware alternatives. I really appreciate the giveaways. You people do us a wonderful service. But please....... we have enough dvd rippers and video converters. Please move on and offer us something different.

No problems installing or running under XP SP2. Nice batch of format save options. Only drawback: it doesn't seem to support widescreen. As near as I can tell, 640x480 is the best resolution it offers.

Installed OK under XP Pro SP3. Said it was activated during install, but then came up as trial when first run - then it activated OK.

My preferred output is DV AVI, but this does not appear in the list. Pity, because that's what I need for easy editing, none of the offered alternatives are acceptable, and uncompressed AVI is just too profligate with disk space.

Seems very slow on my test rip. Many times less than realtime. In comparison, my software MPG-AVI converter software does it faster than real time.

I wish those who write pre-purchase specifications would give more than just 'AVI' as output (for example) when describing formats.

So this program won't be too useful in my case.

Basically the activation program need access to the Internet in order to activate the application. When the activate program is denied access, you receive the erroneous message to try again later. Go into the settings of you virus protection program and turn it off for as short a period as possible. Once it is off, try the Activation program again. It most likely will work and then you can install the application. I am running MS's One Source and it always denies access to the activation program.

I get this error, same like #3:

Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate is running.
Click ‘OK’ will close Xilisoft DVD Ripper Ultimate
and continue. Click ‘Cancel’ will exit.

How can I install this? I use XP SP3, and no running any plus software...
