Fantastic bit of software - does what it says on the tin (DVD _> Flash conversion).

Only glaring problem is the lack of wide screen & higher resolution formats, so it's not that useful for ripping DVDs for use on my Xperia X1, which supports 800x480 resolution.

If you don't need this feature though, it's great - if they add a better range of resolutions in the future, I may purchase this, as it works wonderfully!

Bob #42 : you neglect to say what kind of user you are operating as. Are you a Standard (Limited) User when you do the things you speak of? Or are you acting as a [shudder] Administrator? This is vital information for advice on usage if we are going to disabuse people from running their machines as admins. Just imagine anyone running their u/*nix computer as Root. It would be laughable in that community.

The message also needs to be gotten through to developers who sit there writing and testing their programs as admins all day; they might not even have a Standard (Limited) User account..! They need to be disabused, too.

As for "the files in the compressed folder by simpily double clicking on it" (I assume you mean the compressed file) - that's wrought with difficulties: using a temporary view inside a compressed package can really screw things up. It's best to extract the files to, say, an Install folder, and then use them in a natural (unpackaged) state.

HTH

I have the same problem that #15, Redrik, had; when I try to extract, for each file in the zip folder that the extract process comes across, it indicates that the file is password protected and that a password is needed...Why??? If your going to do this, give us the password(s) so that we can extract the files.

If anybody else has this problem, I worked around the problem by creating a new regular (non-zipped) folder with the same name as the zipped folder (although, you can name it anything you want), but without the ".zip" extenision, of course; and then I just dragged the zipped files from the zipped folder into the new regular folder, thereby copying the extracted form of each file into the new folder...and I was never asked for a password when I did it this way.

I have Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 2...just in case anybody is wondering.

I currently use HandBrake, a DVD to MP4/AVI converter, which is great for putting DVDs on your PSP/iPod/whatever, but a program like this one is great for getting those movies onto your blog/myspace/website for wiewing...being able to add some effects is pretty useful too...

aw, man, all is good, the pgm, the reg. The FLV, SWF, Flash player 10...well, I don't know, these flash pgms kill me...all keep telling me I don't have Fl10 installed (as if). I even moved it into every pgm folder, copied it X times. No go. The install even asked me a wierd question, real personal and caring-friendly like: DO YOU PROMISE TO INSTALL FLASH PLAYER 10? I clicked YES. This is a wierd show, almost as entertaining as "Coast." FF, Adobe, MS keep showing F10 is installed...I can copy and move it, all some 10 separate installs.

I notice the sign-in macro didn't work tonight...Ashcraft's does...can anyone help with the Flash player 10? What good are all the Flash pgms to me, and I can't get in a Flash? iam serious!

REGISTERED is already done when you activated On Register said in the headline "DVD to Flash Converter has been Registered." Otherwise it will say how many days to use this software, if that show, then try to copy activate in where the Wondershare directory on yout system , then click activate, make sure you close DVD to Flash Converter window before Activate.

Have I any problem in my eyes or the quality of the generated flv file is very poor?
I have tried it with 2 DVD's and result was not good.
During motion scenes the corresponding flv presents noises in the image, with a kind of lines appearing.
I have tried it just with normal quality.

#13: "ISO files ... were not accepted as valid ... made using “ImTOO DivX to DVD Converter,”"

Not sure how standard, or non-standard the DVDs are from that program. If you extract the ISO file to get the separate files in a normal VIDEO_TS folder (use ImageBuster etc), or burn to disc & copy to hard drive, you could try an app called FixVTS you can find via videohelp.com. You might also try PGCEdit, which has quite a few checks and automatic repairs. Since you're not after menus, you should also be able to use PGCDemux to get your separate audio & video files, then import those into Muxman, which will produce a set of on-spec DVD files, assuming the audio & video are good.

* * *

#24: "Why should I need to convert a DVD to a flash or flv?"

Just a few: DVD recorders & some cameras record directly to DVD, so this could be the most direct route to get their video on-line. It could also work well for someone wanting only a small, highlights video on their site promoting a DVD etc. Many people have photo slideshows & such on DVD.

* * *

#31: "When I tried to add a wma movie to convert a message popped up saying “invalid.” "

Wondershare has several products... suggest you check their site & others for video converters instead of DVD conversion software.

* * *

#32: "does this thing allow me to rip DVD movies to my pc so I can make a backup copy"

No... check out DVDFab or AnyDVD software

* * *

#34: "But I installed & uninstalled this program 3 times And it will not let me “unzip” anything & I cannot register it!"

If it helps, download the program, "WondershareDVD2Flash.zip", & un-zip it using something like the free 7-Zip program to it's own folder. Run Activate.exe (suggest as administrator to be safe) in that folder, allowing it internet access as needed if you have a firewall installed. Double click / run Setup.exe to install the program.

Clicking on register shows blank spaces for e-mail and activation code but if. you look at the top it says it is already registered. I sure that is a specific thing for GOTD

Like their other products, Wondershare's DVD to Flash Converter is a nice, polished program that works. It takes up ~ 16 MB on your hard drive, makes very few changes to Windows or the Windows registry, & uses the separate Activate.exe from GOTD to register the program. As usual Activate.exe makes changes to Windows' registry, so users with limited rights may need to run the program as Administrator so those registry changes are allowed. DVD to Flash Converter's speed, while average, is still very reasonable considering all the work it's doing (resizing, converting fps, encoding etc). It includes the welcome option to include permanent subtitles -- Flash video can include switchable subs [subs that you can turn on/off], but creating & using them is such a big hassle, so problematic I've never seen it done. If DVD to Flash Converter has any limitations, one is the limited output frame sizes, & the other is the Flash video format itself...

Flash video is basically a type of mp4 in a FLV container that can be played using the Flash Player. Being able to use the Flash player is Flash video's more or less sole claim to fame -- you can encode higher quality video to smaller files otherwise. You can customize Flash players in a SWF file that may or may not also contain the FLV video... DVD to Flash Converter includes some nice player templates & gives you the choice of whether you want just the FLV file, want to add a player, or if you want to combine both in a single file.

Alternatives... 1st off there are 3 main types of conversion software: There are similar all-in-one converters, some that take the approach of making a series of snapshots of a playing DVD, thus getting around any DRM issues. However the more traditional method involves accessing the original mpg2 video inside a DVD's VOB files, often indexing them using DGIndex, with AviSynth using that index to supply original quality video to the encoder. Several free programs bundle the individual programs needed with a GUI or front end, making conversion much easier. The advantage is that with any sort of video conversion there's a quality bottleneck when the original video has to be decoded (as if it's going to be displayed, though you may not see it) so that it can be optionally re-sized (or otherwise manipulated) & then re-encoded -- DGIndex & AviSynth together allow you to bypass some programming code or steps that would otherwise be necessary, giving you higher quality results. The cost is the time it takes to index the DVD's video -- ~ 10 - 12 minutes -- and the often more flexible [read complicated] GUI you'll see with most software using DGIndex & AviSynth.

Xilisoft makes a converter similar to DVD to Flash Converter that was previously offered on GOTD... It handles more output formats, is more complicated to use (more settings possible), & lacks the player options. [It's not free unless you catch it on GOTD, but we *Are* supposed to recommend the GOTD offered software we like ;-) ] Extra DVD Ripper Express, another GOTD offer, goes the snapshot route. Videohelp.com has links &/or downloads for DGIndex, AviSynth, & many apps using both for conversion -- many do not work with DVDs directly... for that there are many tools available, including DVDFab & PGCDemux, plus guides on how to do pretty much whatever conversion you're after.

That said, since FLV is a lower quality format to begin with, I'm not sure it would always be worth squeezing a bit more quality from any conversion... personally I wouldn't hesitate to install & use Wondershare's DVD to Flash Converter at all.

This worked for me! I have had zero success working with video, in any format!

However, with this product, I put a standard movie DVD in the drive, used the preview feature to choose which file to use, and hit START.

The total result was less than 1GB, and plays in Firefox! By using a flash drive to move the file to my Netbook, I'm all set and good to go!

@Spacepixie: you're fine, you did register.
When there is no pop up and no word UNREGISTERED in the caption it's OK.
The things I called confusing @19 is just the way it functions here.
Not normal, but no problem.
In fact the register button show a window and it does say that you are registered. Just read all the text, only the fields are empty.
There is no s/n in the registry. It is a bit more complex and less easy to find (CLSID). Don't bother, you're fine.

I had recently "ripped" a dvd to my drive which created a directory full of vob, bup, and ifo files which mean nothing to me, so I had no idea how to view the dvd. I installed this Wondershare DVD Converter, pointed it to the directory containing and clicked the Start button. It started creating separate flv files for different segments of the dvd. I noticed the checkbox, "merge into one file." I clicked that and clicked Start again and it did a great job! The output was a little dark, but there are probably settings to adjust that. I also have various family video's that I want to put online. This is a great tool! I can't tell if the activation worked for sure, because I still have a register button with blank fields, so I'm hoping it is registered. Thanks!

On my Vista HP it installed and activated fine as administrator each time. However I also get nothing about it being registered in the help about fields which is unusual and the register button is blank also unusual. The program does not say unregistered and opens normally. I checked using regedit.exe and there is no registratio entry though there is no reminder to register or pop ups or 30 day trial either. Is it registered. Christ alone knows as mu PC doesn't.

DVD is just a format. You can record anything (including your home movies) to DVD format so you shouldn't assume it can only be used for piracy purposes. FYI MP3 and bittorrent are also technologies and have legitimate uses.

Same with a pair of scissors and a knife! ;-)

@Robert-16:
The registered product will read from the windowcaption (top):
"Wondershare DVD to Flash Converter"

The unregistered product will add "Unregistered" to that. You will get a popup screen reminding you to register when you start up aswell.

Confusing:
"Help, about" will only give info about the converter, but unusual nothing about registration.
The "Register"-button will not be removed after registration. After pressing it, no info will be shown.

Hmmmm.... I'm a bit unsure if this is actually registered now or not, also. Tried it both ways - running the Activate program with the main program open, and did it again with the program closed, as Wshare-fan suggested. The registration panel in the program remains barren, neither a username nor an activation code filled in. I'm wondering if *ANYBODY* has found those fields to be filled in after supposedly activating the program. Anyone??? (Oh... WinXP here, so not an issue of running Vista under improper credentials...)

I found comment #5 from the software vendor essential. It's the first time I've been caught out on registration, only to find I've done it right and the software really is registered. It even says so on the "Register" pop up. What tricked me is that it looks unregistered until you read the words. I feel a bit stupid. How about you?

One other issue. I couldn't unzip as it asked for a password. As usual, unzipping is not necessary. I just installed and activated with no problem other than my confusion.

Is is any good? Don't know yet but it's probably well worth the money.

@Wendy-#9:
I guess you are from Wondershare ("download our program again"). Welcome and I'm sure people are very greatfull that you are here with us.

The reg.file you are talking about is protected by the people of GAotD with a wrapper to make sure people can only use it today (all part of the deal).

In the downloaded zip-file is no reg-file but in stead an activate.exe file (I'm sure it contains the reg.file you were talking about). I don't want to be outsmarting about that but I am quite sure people will look for reg.files they won't find if this was not made more clear.

My advise will be a bit different, because of the activate.exe.
Install the setup.exe and after installation is completed close it completely.
Then run the activate.exe. This will do. Vista-users might need to do all (setup and activate) of this as a administrator (both "logged in" and "run as"..)

NB: there is also a readme-file included in the zip-download. Always read this and in case you don't trust my advise, do trust the readme-file.

Answer to comment 5 about registration:
After download our program here, you can see two files: a setup .exe file and a reg file, right? Please install the program, launch it, then click the reg file when the registration window pop up.
You can also click "Help" and choose "Register" to open the register window, then click the reg file and it will register the program automatically.
If you can't find the reg file or the reg file takes no effect, maybe the file is damaged, please download our program again.

The Good
*Nice clean interface.
*Easy to use.
*Can convert a DVD from an actual disc, a "DVD folder", an ISO file or via an IFO file.
*Good conversion speed.
*Allows you to do some video editing, such as crop, trim, add watermark, add effect, etc.
*Supports batch processing.
*Supports drag + drop.
*You are merge videos together.
*Fairly extensive customization of SWF exports (player, credits, watermarks).
*Has a "shutdown computer after conversion" feature.
*At the highest possible settings, the output quality to input quality is almost 1:1.

The Bad
* Drag + drop only supports for ISOs and IFOs.
* No watermark for FLV output.
* Would have been nice to be able to rip DVDs into formats other than Flash.
* No "keep default/same resolution" or "proper" DVD resolution selections (by default).

Registration and installation
Went fine. I am not sure if you have to run Activate.exe as Administrator on Vista (like you had to with other Wondershare product) so if it does not register properly, go back and run it as Admin. Also note that the "Register" button will still show even though the product is registered.

Not a bad software, its conversion speed and conversion quality made me happy we i used it to convert my dvd to FLV.

I finished in installation and then it led me to their official website and a form asked me if I order/Registered or later.Of course,I chose 'Order later',then I activated by the stuff included in the zip.Well,I tried to pressed on the button 'Help' and then 'About',I could not see anything about if I've registered with the gift today,yes,it's a bit worry.Then I tried to press on the button button 'Registere',I saw the form which asked me if I register,order now or order later.I'm really confused now and I would appreciate who could help me to solve this problems,thamks a lot.My laptop now runs XP SP2,Bye !

Another conversion program from wondershare after the video converter. compared with the dvd ripper from clone2go which also supports dvd to flv conversion and dvd to swf conversion, this dvd to flash converter offers kinds of customizable effects, a great edge indeed. and

1. the software UI is very attractive and easy to handle.
2. Got a dvd (trim a 2-minute clip) converted. the output satisfied me on the whole.
3. very fashionable player templates...

So I'd cast a vote on it. if only it could help to generate the html code for the output to be uploaded to the blog or website.

Thanks for shaing.
