I installed this, which went well, but it froze after a short while. I couldn't see what to close in Task Manager so had to force a close down as my laptop wouldn't work at all. It was an express install - no options apart from where it would go. On reboot I got some message window about Bing, argh! I've now uninstalled this giveaway. Darn! Shoulda read Giovanni first. I usually do. My mistake.

A few years ago I installed a Wondershare screen recorder which worked for a while then it started slowing down to the point it was useless. It would seem that Wondershare and I are not compatible, sadly. Thanks anyway.

In terms of Free Alternatives I didn't see PICASA mentioned above. It has an easy to use 'slideshow' function with transitions, music, etc. Also, SERIF Software has several freeware versions of their PhotoPlus and MoviePlus products that can produce a slideshow with various transitions, backdrops, musics, etc.

I enjoyed using the standard edition, so with a discount of '80%' being offered I decided to buy the deluxe edition.

I will try it and use it for what I need it for currently then I will
give it to my daughter.

9/10 this software, wondershare are one of the better players in the software market place.

I have always liked Wondershare and its products. Because of that, I will assume that this represents an unfortunate lapse and is flukish in nature. I will ignore this one and presume that the next offering will meet the more characteristic higher standards that I am accustomed to with Wondershare. PS - As always, thanks Gio, my paesano!

Your welcome Craig. This company happens to be the company the program I suggested comes from. Like this program the free program I suggested, Youtube downloader, needs to be upgraded to the full version but at least the Youtube downloader gets the job done. Todays GOTD has too many features missing that makes it kind of useless in the sea of full featured free programs. Thank you GOTD and Wondershare. I can't wait to see the paid version of the Youtube downloader for free again.

Hello Giovanni,

Just want to tell you that one of the reasons I like to see GOTD every day is to read your comments and get your Free alternatives. They are better than the the give-aways. :-).

Hey there Giovanni
Dubit last update is from 2004, will it run without problems on Win7 x64?
(I know I can use TimeFreeze but sometimes problems are two months down the road, if anyone has a clue, please drop a line)

Just a suggestion , when installing any GOTD software always create a Restore point first
Then if the Software you trial is not what you want to keep. Just go back to the Restore point and it will clear out all trace of the installation. No bits left in the Registry ect
This is the best way to do it rather than rely on the Uninstall option

I downloaded this several hours ago, tried several formats. No matter what size image I use, they are stretched to full screen and unusable. Uploaded flash version to my website but that too was stretched to full screen. Can't find any help to change that. Do have WSHelper.exe and WSHelper.ini but haven't seen any ads as reported by "Mary", #13. Some features I clicked on told me I had to buy a different version. Hate that! Email which contained activation code says they plan to send me "the latest promotion information". Don't want that.

Either this program has limited controls for limited features or it's too complicated for the novice to figure out so thumbs-down. Will watch for pop-up ads today (and report any) then will uninstall.

@Michael: "Using previously stated work-arounds...."

WHY DO YOU EVEN HAVE AV/FIREWALL ON YOUR PC IF YOU DO NOT HEED ITS ADVICE? There are reasons why these tools WARN you that what you are installing may be a problem or hazardous to your PC.

Wondershare is notoriously known for spamming you to death and placing irrelevant (to their software) code on your PC. When you try to uninstall it, some code stays behind and bogs down your PC. Sorry, but you are being duped, probably AGAIN.

Once upon a time, 'slideshows' were just that: 35m film slides enlarged on a white screen by a projector. They didn't look anything like a movie, nor could they: still images are just that. . . Motionless. But then came the American film-maker, Ken Burns, who in 1990 changed the way we look at slides v movies forever. Burns's astonishing Civil War television production has won more awards than any other documentary series in TV history, and for good reason: aside from all its other achievements in scripting, editing, and overall production, it's the first example of still images being handled in such a way as to make them appear moving images.

Fast forward from the pre-digital era of 1990 to 2001, and Microsoft's PhotoStory 3 took everything that Ken Burns had pioneered and wrapped it all up into a software program all the more astonishing for being totally free. Which it still is.

PhotoStory 3 facilitates the compilation of still images in such a way as to achieve a 100% professional-looking movie production. Thanks to its technologically elegant construction and flawless GUI, Photostory 3 allows full user control over every production aspect, including lateral panning, zooming in and out, image-display time, even transition display time.

That Microsoft failed to develop this product is a mystery, for it could easily have become commercialware and wiped out every other slideshow maker program ever conceived, back then or, indeed, right now. That development failure means that workarounds are needed to utilise PS3 in 16:9 mode, and also to burn PS3 productions to DVD, it being the case that the software was created in an era before home DVD players and widescreen monitors and TV. But the workarounds aren't that difficult to use. Ample information exists on the Web. Just Google.

So now it's 2012, and here's Wondershare with a $40 (reduced from $50) DVD Slideshow Builder Standard, software that seems to have been invented in complete ignorance of both Ken Burns and Microsoft Photostory 3.

There is no custom motion control. No pan and zoom. No transition effects: images just jerk from one to another as if in a slide projector. Crucially, there is no control over the duration of image display and -- just as bad -- no control over transition times, be it a slow fade in or out, or a quick jump-cut.

In other words: this is robotic software at its absolute worst. At $39.95, it's $39.95 over-priced -- and at free, still isn't worth the time and trouble of bothering with a download and intall. This Standard version has every apperance of crippleware intended to be an upsell to the equally over-priced $59.95. . . though why anyone would bother with either of these Wondershare products escapes me.

Thanks, GAOTD, but no thanks. As freeware, Wondershare DVD Slideshow Builder Standard is a joke; as a prospective $40 re-install, it represents the biggest waste of money any computer user could ever contemplate.

The standard version sells for 39.95 and the deluxe version is 59.95 on their website. The deluxe version has pan and zoom. IMHO this offering is a hobbyist version, intended to send nice but basic slideshows to friends and relatives. The deluxe version has more features but is very pricey - even at 50% off. Just compare it to LQ Graphics Photo to Movie which sells for 29.95 everyday and is EXCELLENT.
So, for casual slideshows this wondershare is fine for free. They do have a bundle for $56 here http://store.wondershare.com/shop/buy/buy-dvd-slideshow-builder-deluxe.html
which features a converter with many output options, so if you plan to output to your specific device it is likely that you will be covered.
For free this is fine to hook that HDMI cable between your computer and TV and show a casual slideshow. But it doesn't have pan and zoom. And their list prices are simply not competitive, and even at 50% off they are just consistent with other slideshow software at regular price - have a look at top rated nch photostage slideshow at top ten reviews here
http://photo-slideshow-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
which is polished with pan and zoom for 29.95.
The free photofilmstrip offers a quick and easy way to make a slideshow but offers few output options.
So, todays giveaway is just fine to make that fun DVD to send to your friends and relatives - in time for the holidays. But for more serious slideshows (remember you may have what you make for years) there are other options. A few more to consider are Aquasoft Slideshow Creator, Pictures to Exe and Proshow Gold. And there are the many online photoshow makers. But for free this is a fine but basic slideshow software- perfect for introduction into slideshow making.

Well there's always Windows Movie Maker (comes with winXP and up), it's quick and fast, albeit has some cheesy overused effects, it's perfect for your needs for family/wedding/photos. You can drop in photos, edit timing of songs, music and add in transitions easily.

Plus there are a whole whack of transitions/effects you can download from the web made by amateur and expert video editors!

Wondershare DVD Slideshow Builder Standard installed and registered without problems on Win 7 64-bit.

Wow, you fork out $40 and still no transition effects or custom time durations.
Well, you can set the time duration of each photo in the timeline, but only to a limited extend. By default they'll show for 4 secs and you can stretch this to 8 seconds. But each time you apply a different style or effect, all frames revert back to 4 seconds. I really don't get the logic behind that other than frustrating my workflow...

The GUI itself is nice, uncluttered and easy to follow. Supports drag-and-drop for all media.

It isn't a keeper for me. During editing not all changes are preserved and especially the continuous re-adjusting of the timeline is frustrating to no end. If I set it to be 8 seconds long this program shouldn't change it back to 4 all the time.

This might be useful to some but to me it's $40 of crippleware. Wondershare should drop the Standard version or make it free and sell the Deluxe for around $20-30. That would be a fair deal imho.

Uninstalled. Leaves behind a lot of registry entries and templates in Program Files. Very, very sloppy and I'm glad Revouninstaller caught them.
So thumbed down. Thanks anyway GOTD and Wondershare.

Well, in my view, it doesn't make sense try and comment GAOTD like this if what is offered here is just the BASIC limited version of the main commercial program. In fact, what kind of suggestions and improvements should I give to the developer, if I can't try for FREE the PRO version? LOL!!

Be careful installing any Wondershare products!

On their last "offer", they bundled in a file named WSHelper.exe. This file is a pop up advertising from them that pops up on your DESKTOP, not in a browser. Even after you think you have uninstalled their software, the WSHelper.exe stays behind. Be sure to remove it! Try going to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Wondershare\Wondershare Helper Compact\WSHelper.exe. (or a location similar to that, depending on your OS)

You can see my review, and the others who had found it too, by going to the last offer at:

Very impressed with this. Guides you from start to end how to create a DVD slideshow with full control of what you want it to appear. What I did was to click on "timeline" at the button right of the screen after loading some sample photos, and then click the left panel, starting from Style, Clippart, Effect, Pre-Audio, Intro/Credit, and in the process dragging any audio, clippart you want to appear on the strip of timeline below, and then adjust the duration, and timing of each of these, and you have a nice DVD show. Next, you just click on "Create", a very big button on top, and your edited slideshow is ready to burn to dvd, or to be saved to the computer in various formats, or even saved to mobile devices, or for upload to youtube. While most of the style packages included here need separate purchase, those free ones are enough for me.

The set up file was blocked by SONAR with Norton. Using previously stated work-arounds, I was able to load it on my Windows 7 Home machine.. I used my email address that I send spam to since I don't know if I can trust this site to avoid spamming me or not, but I haven't received any spam emails yet.

Interestingly enough, the code was emailed to me with a message that it is only valid for the download from another website that also offered free software. Furthermore, if you go to the manufacturer's page, you'll see the date the special pricing offers are good for are supposed to end on Nov. 5, 2012 so it seems this is a program the company offers free through several channels.

I found several typos/misspellings on the manufacturer's page, but this is the type of software I could really see being useful for me, so I went ahead and downloaded it any way. As stated on the web site, this version has limits, so it really is an enticement to buy the full, deluxe version, but as a stand-alone program, it does work.
The program opens to splash screen asking if you want the basic version or upgrade with a discount.
I liked the fact I could just drop in the pictures and music and select from templates t create a video. The concept is the same as using PowerPoint and Windows DVD Maker (part of Windows 7), but this does have more pre-made templates. I was hoping it would adjust the length of time the images display in order to make the entire video match the length of the music, however it does not do this. Once the images finish displaying for the preset time limit (editable in the deluxe version),the music fades at whatever point it is in. This makes it VERY hard to get a video with background music that does not irritate you when viewing it. The ending of a song in the middle of a verse is a bit strange and very disjointed.

I was also not happy to see that features such as Movie styles that are upgrade fees are buttons in the program that require an upgraded registration to use. If it is not feature of the program, then there do not need to be buttons for the effect. It belongs in the deluxe version, so that is where the button should be found.

It did a good job of creating an Android movie that played on my Kindle Fire once I side loaded it. So, it is a useful tool for creating photo slideshows to mobile video. However, because the images are not set according to the timing of the music, I really can’t see a use for it.

This is another email registration required program. Visit this link to have the code sent to your email address…

http://www.wondershare.com/cooperation/giveaway-of-the-day.html

As always, if the code does not arrive immediately, check your spam folder as it may have been directed there. There are a number of throw away email address services available if the thought of giving your email address worries you. For the record I have never been spammed by this publisher.

I am not a photo expert by any means. This one seems like it is easy to use. The publisher’s web site offers this guide to help get you started. There is also a short one minute video you can watch.

http://www.wondershare.com/guide/dvd-slideshow-builder-standard.html

Over the years, this publisher has been an active contributor to this site so their offerings are always welcome. Thank you GOTD team for your efforts. Some people fail to realize how difficult it is to come up with a giveaway each and every day. Also an offer that may be in a saturated field for one user may be brand new to another user. Keep in mind this site is for everyone, not just a few. See you all tomorrow.

Haven't tried the product yet, however install was a breeze. You do have to give a name and email, but I got the registration code in about 2 minutes. Using Win 7 64x - program installed and opened without any problems. I have several other Wondershare programs, never a problem with any of them. Also no problems with them spamming my inbox. They offer a discount if you upgrade to their delux program.

I'll try this after I get some sleep. Thanks Wondershare and GOTD.

-- more over no transitions are possible with the standard version.
