Since mike indicated that this doesn't do much damage, I installed it. Activate needed to be run as an administrator on Vista (obviously, it's too late if you didn't).

Those with a DSi will need a compatible flash-cart, such as an Acekard 2i, DSTTi, M3i Zero, R4i, etc.

The iPlayer ($44) is a hardware decoder for the DS/DSL/DSi which directly supports all popular video formats, including 3GP, ASF, AVI, DivX, XviD, FLV, MOV, MPG, RM, RMVB, and WMV, 640x480 recommended, and all popular audio formats, including AAC, APE, FLAC, MP3, M4A, OGG, RA, WAV, and WMA. Additionally, iPlayer supports DLDI, so you can use DSOrganize, MoonShell, DSReader, Reno Studio, etc.

#18, Jason, did you use the specific preset for MoonShell 2.0?

This comment was supposed to be posted early, but Vista crashed due to memory management issues. The culprit is my nVidia drivers. The latest beta largely fixes multi-monitor support which they broke in the last several drivers. However, recent drivers include the nVidia Stereo Vision Control Panel API Server, which eats a whopping almost a GB of RAM on my PC (more than that, virtual).

#5 - You mean a 1 GHz processor is not that big a deal today in terms of requirements. If that's what they're saying it would probably run OK w/ 600/700/900 Mhz if nothing else was running. Most people have at least a 1 ghz today anyway.

Thing is -- how many people really want to convert video to run on a Nintendo? Seems pretty niche to me.

#41: Thanks for the great answer, but let me reword my original post...

"I know that loading the files onto an original DS/DS Lite, you need a DS chip with a slot of a MicroSD chip. I’m NOT looking to acquire DS games in any way (I buy them in stores).

So, with that said, what’s the least expensive and most easily-accessable Nintendo DS/Lite playback device on the market?"

(That was my fault; I should have specified.)

It does not support vista 64-bit so it is useless. Why can't companies make products that support the latest and most advanced version of windows?

#29: "So, with that said, what’s the least expensive and most easily-accessable playback device on the market?"

You can only choose one of your 2 requirements. ;-)

Cheap... there are loads of mp3 players that do video on the market, & many are extremely cheap -- mine was $10 shipped!

But most are a PITA getting your video on the device so it will play. I have to go thru 3 steps 1) get the video. 2) resize the video. 3) convert it using special software, from the company that makes the electronics inside the player. My son has a Sandisk player he uses for mp3s that cost about $60 -- have to use a special program from SanDisk that's *Very* buggy.

Easy to use... buy an iPod. Zunes aren't too bad, but still harder unless you use the slow Microsoft program to re-encode everything. But better video requires better chips which means more money -- the PSP, DS, some cell phones etc have a better chip already, so many use those. None of these alternatives come cheap.

In between is a portable DVD player, but they're bigger, you have to carry the discs, & they take a lot of power -- either plug in or make do with just a couple of hours battery life.

#32: "I am looking for a program to compress std video cam footage to a much smaller file size so i can email it or upload it to the web so i can share it with family. will this program do this? if yes, can it be replayed and watched any other way without a DS? the grandparents are dying to see video of the kids. thanks much."

No... it'll certainly make video files smaller, but not so much good for the grandparents, even if they have a Nintendo DS. ;-)

Best way is to use YouTube like millions of others, or use one of the other video sharing sites. Videohelp.com & doom9.org both have a lot of info published & in their forums on converting whatever type of video your camera shoots -- the only thing close to a std. was DV, which isn't what most cameras use today. Lots of hidden gotcha's for some camera's, so don't skip the research. Then use software from one of those sites, wait for GOTD to offer another video program that will work, or buy editing/conversion software.

DPG Converter is just like the other Wondershare converters -- you get the same interface [GUI] etc with specialized output, in this case for the DS. Wondershare has a great rep, & the encoding part of their converters is top notch -- they include encoders licensed from MainConcept, same as Adobe's Premiere Pro & Sony's Vegas, programs costing several hundreds of dollars each.

And like the other, Wondershare converters, today's GOTD DPG version doesn't have much impact on Windows, with Registry additions mostly related to uninstall, & no files to add to the Windows System folders... Vista users should be happy with no NCT libraries to potentially cause problems. DPG Converter installs with 121 files, 11 folders, totaling about 35 MB. Like most other video converters, DPG Converter uses profiles for output format, allowing only a small amount of customization -- this is a double-edged sword, keeping things simple, But, at the same time keeping you from tweaking all of the settings to improve your results.

You can do some very limited editing in DPG Converter, & most input formats are recognized & accepted. While it's not a DVD Ripper, it will accept the VOB files where a DVD stores it's audio/video content. Probably the easiest way to convert a DVD would be to 1st use the free DVD Shrink, with preferences set to DVD9, & on the Output tab, "Split VOB files..." un-checked. You should also use Shrink's Re-Author mode. That way you wind up with just 1 VOB file containing the movie or TV show you want, that you can easily import into DPG Converter. Since a DVD can contain over a dozen VOB files, you can see why having just 1 is worth the extra few minutes it'll take you in Shrink.

The only way to play a DPG file on a DS is with a flash-cart, like a Acekard or M3.

I use a M3 Real with the M3Sakura firmware to watch my videos. I have no use for this application called Moonshell personally, but here's a Wikipedia page on it for those interested:
