#77, john, I have a license for VideoReDo TVSuite (like most software I purchase, it was at a discount). As far as I know, the betas function like normal 15-day trials if you don't have a license. That also means that if you use one and it expires, and you try a newer beta, it will probably also be expired. So basically you get a chance to try the software to see if it suites your needs. I don't remember whether the trial versions have restrictions, I've been using various licensed versions of VideoReDo for years, since Windows Media Center and most DVR applications will produce files with errors. Usually, that's not a big deal if you're viewing the file live, although sometimes it is, and it can screw up writing to DVD. Vista was initially released with a defective Media Center, in typical Microsoft fashion, which had errors at the beginning of the file which even VideoReDo couldn't fix. Since video files are huge, I would have had to use other software to copy only the beginning of the file and send it to the VideoReDo developer, which wasn't practical at the time. Now, there are temporary file hosts on the Internet which can handle large files. An FFmpeg-based DVR-MS to MPEG converter was able to handle those errors, so that's what I used until Microsoft fixed the problem. As I stated earlier, the guy who develops VideoReDo isn't the greatest programmer, so it could be better, but most of the time it works well enough for my needs, and I've never had to go through all of the convolutions which mike always talks about with other software.

While it may support mpeg containers, it has a hell of a time with many audio and video codecs IN those containers. Really, "including HD"? Um, not when the vast majority of what is true HD (1080p) is in x264. No DTS/DDHD/DDHT support? There goes BBC/Discovery, National Geographic, ABC, NBC, CPS, FOX, KBS, CNC, most Japanese stations.... basically, any over-air broadcast, picked up from OA antenna, cable, satellite, wherever.
For all the claims of who is best in these, honestly, very basic ultra-entry-level programs, why pay all this extra money for LESS tools?
VirtuaDubMod can handle anything this can, and most of what it can't.

fubar,

You said you use the beta versions of VideoReDo. How long do they stay operational. Sounds like a good piece of software.

Here's a picture of the VideoReDo interface, editing a high-definition DVR-MS file, with a few options shown (1920x1440). The blue graph indicates audio level and type. Not in the picture, at the beginning of the show, it's possible to tell where the station changed from 2-channel to 5.1-channel audio (they did it a bit late). Here's the VLC media information for the edited output, showing that VideoReDo edits AC3 fine (as long as you just edit and don't alter the audio).

this program can also be used to create frame by frame screenshots.
I was hoping it would do this and it does.
just came back to say I did have to enter psn when I opened program 1st time , but I pasted it in and got sn validated mess, and it works good.
I cant figure why dan above had to run in safe mode, I use win xp too, although I may be sp2. I am not into windows updates unless I have to have something to make a program work. it seems to me they cause more harm than good.
also it is something wrong with all the people that had this program freeze, I think the problem is in their computer not this software.
if you have antivirus programs you should check exec, and then turn off antivirus before installing a new program

@ dan when you were in safe mode, the program then worked because the antivirus or other program that is the problem was not running.
if you figure out which program it is you wouldnt have to use safe mode, and since it is now installed it might run ok anyway.

#36, Bad One: timeline, display multiple frames, (potential) commercial identification, graphical display of audio levels, etc., VideoReDo has all of that. Also, you can use freeware and shareware commercial identifiers and cutters, such as Comskip (free), ShowAnalyzer ($30), and others.

I found that even though I finally have the program installed, it would not run under Windows normal mode. XPPRO SP3. Every time I ran the program, it would freeze and then open multiple instances of the program until my CPU was locked at 100% and the program AND the computer stayed frozen. I restarted the computer in SAFE mode and ran the program. It worked perfectly (the way it was supposed to in normal mode) and I was able to effortlessly edit a movie. The saved movie looked professionally edited and it was impossible (almost) to tell that it was altered in any way when I played it back in normal mode. So, all in all, I have an editing program available for use as long as I want to boot into safe mode to use it. Better than nothing. However, it does what it is advertised to do, in safe mode only. Thanks WOMBLE for the program and GAOTD for the offering.

quote "Entering the product serial number was a different story. The dialog box into which that number should go was completely unreceptive; displaying a Not Responding message if the box was clicked more than 3 times attempting to get a curser to display in the box."

Installed this just now and th number was automatically entered, my firewal asked if the program could contact gotd, I clicked yes and the actvation was successful, then after clicking finish my browser opens back up to gotd.
I did have the serial # copied and ready to paste , but I think that if the activate exec has to have permission to contact internet. If it does , almost all activations require you to do nothing.
so you shouldnt have had to click in the box or paste the SN in the box, it should be done for you by the exec.
I think some security feature [ on those computers] is blocking that from happening.
I think the orange exec with all these app's needs to connect to internet when you first open it, if it cant then you may have problems.
I dont have anyting to say about the software itself will have to try it. thanks for the link to the pdf manual.
I would like to say I like all the helpful comment people put here that help me decide wheter to try a app and what the app does or doesnt do.

Just because I am curious, I reinstalled the program. When I could not get past the serial number screen, I restarted the computer in safe mode with networking enabled. The program serial number screen then worked normally and I entered the serial number and the program was registered. So, if you have been having all the many problems listed in other comments above, try safe mode. It worked for me.
