great product My only issue is that it defaults to subtitles. It is quite annoying to go in and change that...

Contrary to what is said in the product desc, it won't install under W98. Installs flawlessly under XP, though...

Install stops at the activation step. I am using Win98. The activation window just opens and nothing happens. Third attempt, gave it an hour each time.

I installed this on 2 different machines: winxp pro and win7. It would install and start with no problem. However, I would point it at both DVD discs and ripped dvd folders and it would just hang. I would get a message in the preview windows stating 'scanning, please wait...'. Nothing happened after 1 hour.
I gave up and uninstalled.

The first time through, I got an AVI file that played but had no sound.
So I tried again, only this time I moved the Volume slider up from the default of +2dB to +8 and I got the same error messages and a file of about the same size (I didn't write down the original size) only this file causes WMP to hang. It will open with DivX Player, but still no sound.
I have tested the same 11 min. 40 sec. VOB file using this program (Win DVD Ripper Platinum), the Aimersoft HD Video given away last week, and the free Dr. DivX. I used the same settings of Audio at 128K/48000 and Video at 900K/sec 512x384.
Dr. DivX took 33 mins to convert the file, Aimersoft took 11 mins and Win DVD Ripper Platinum took 5 mins.
For still images, the image quality of all three is similar, but for movement, the picture quality of Dr. DivX is by far superior to either of the others, so I will stick with it for my purposes. Most of what I want to watch has moving images in it, I don't do much with slide shows.
Both Aimersoft and WDRP get a wierd edge effect in moving images. I'm sure there is a technical term for it but looks like the motion blur is composed of horizontal stripes that are very distracting. Maybe they would not be as noticeable on a tiny screen but at 1/4 of my monitor I did not like watching those images. When I tried playing the file to my large HDTV, it was worse than annoying.
In this stripes-instead-of-blur effect, WDRP was not as bad as Aimersoft, and it did the encoding in half the time or less, so if that was my choice, I'd go with today's WDRP. -- if I could get sound out of it.
But I'm not going to bother trying to fix the sound because my target for viewing is my living- room TV, and Dr. DivX beats these others so much that I don't care about the longer encoding time.
It's been the same with every other one of now eight DVD converters from GAOTD that I have tried. They can all beat The Doctor on speed, but nothing comes close to the quality.
Since I don't care about portable player formats and my so-far-best method for capture gets me VOB files, I only have one conversion type that I'm concerned about, and one hands-down winner for doing that: Dr. DivX. It's slow, but it gets me images I can watch on the larger screen.
Thanks anyway, GAOTD, it sounds like this one is useful for some people, but I'll be removing it.
I hope this helps,
August

Contrary to the #1's posting, this giveaway was unable to bypass a CSS region lock when the regions don't match.
When given a Region 2(Japan)DVD of anime, (I'm in region 1) the program aborts with the “conversion wrong, please check parameters” error noted by #7. It does however, work if provided with either a DVD that lacks region locking, or given a set of files, (matching a DVD's directory tree from the root level) that are already ripped.
Another point for the "good" tally: Although the video on the DVD had been reformatted to match TV viewing, (30 frame/sec interlaced NTSC) this program correctly identified the original anime source as 23.97 frame/sec film, and when given a set of files, was able to correct the interlace artifacts introduced by the NTSC conversion.
I personally found the output video quality to be very slightly smeared. But unless one has seen the 10 megabit/second original from a commercial DVD, or is trying to read credits written in Kanji (Japanese characters), the smeared edges probably wouldn't be noticed. (Most TVs smear the video far worse)

@42, Peter,
I don't want to fire it up again (meaning put in a test DVD to see what options come up), but I believe when I had my test "Sound of Music" DVD ready to rip, the Subtitle language choices were reduced to just a couple, plus a third choice "Disable."
So I suggest you try it with a DVD to see if your complaint goes away.

I must insist you uninstall it ASAP, and install something along the lines of NOD32 or Kaspersky.

Installed cleaning in Vista Business 32bit
I'm not sure, I think it is activated, it shows "GOTD Special Ed" in the About window.
About versioning, obviously the programmers aren't aware of version "etiquette". If you look in the about dialog it shows "Build on 20091119". Since that build number (date) is different than previous ones, in theory the version number should reflect that change, even something as simple as "SE" if nothing in the build has changed other than special activation for GOTD.

I love it!
Like other comments, this is VERY simple. Ashraf was correct about the "D:" default setting. It isn't a big deal though.
However, it seems that there is no way to remove the subtitles... if ANYONE knows how to rip without subtitles, PLEASE let me know.

To #16, who asked:
"I have WinX DVD Ripper installed from the last time it was on GAOTD. Is this a newer or better version?"
If you are referring to the "Platinum" version, which I assume
you are, we can say this... strangely, it *appears* to be the
same version, which is v. 5.1.0.
However, there are some differences between the two, despite having the same version number. And these differences are significant.
First, the older version of the Platinum Ripper alone is 6.33 MB in
size. This newer version is 6.24 MB.
Whatever they removed has apparently helped, because I find it much
easier to use and MUCH, MUCH faster.
Whereas the earlier version would take nearly 2 hrs to "rip" a 2 hour
DVD, this newer version does it in less than 25 minutes. It also
burns to a DVD much faster.
I am still getting used to the proper procedure for ripping and
burning with this software -- apparently it varies with the DVD you
are ripping from -- so I can only say that I find it far better and
faster than the earlier "Platinum" version.
(p.s. I recommend not using your PC during the ripping and burning.
It seems to create small "glitches" in the final video.)

I dl and installed it today, core 2 laptop w/ XP pro. Insterted a DVD and selected AVI,then MPG4, and finally wmv. Created all 3 formats (wanted to see final size and quality of each format). All 3 seem to have worked just fine (.wmv was smallest). I had a previous giveaway installation of the non platinium version but when I tried to use it for this test it repeatedly caused an "MS ecountered an error and...", so I uninstalled the regular and tried this one. Bottom line, worked ok for me.

If you have previous version installed be sure to remove it first to avoid difficulties. I highly recommend using REVO uninstaller to remove programs as Revo finds items often left behind by standard uninstaller. In this case, it found 6 items orphaned in the registry.

Today's GOTD WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is a newer build of the same version I've got installed from September of this year. While I don't know if it will work with the DRM on some of the latest DVDs, the developers' site says it will handle some. Encoding is faster than most in it's class, the output looks decent, & it works with the original files rather than recording video playback [the recording type are slower, lower quality, but assured to work as long as you can play the DVD]. WinX DVD Ripper Platinum is also portable, with Start Menu shortcuts the only addition to Windows -- the main addition to Windows' registry is the uninstall data.
Using the program, you point it to your DVD or DVD folder on your hdd, & it presents you with a list of titles [videos] with a checkbox next to each. Trimming is done in the preview window [drag the black boxes at each end of the progress bar]. Just below the title list you can select your audio track, subtitles, & where you want the converted files stored. The bottom portion of the program's window is where you configure your output format.
Avi gives me my choice of Xvid or DivX, with mp3 or ac3 audio. Frame sizes are adjustable, you can set video & audio band width, plus audio sample rate up to 96000. Fps [Frames per Second] tops out at 30. Mp4 gives you your choice of mp4/H264, but audio's only aac. You can also convert to mpg2, wmv, flv, & mp3 audio only. There's a 2nd row of tabs with presets for iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, PSP, PDA, 3GP, & Zune [not HD].
There are plenty of Alternatives [videohelp.com], though with the exception of video converters designed to use your graphics chip, most all are slower. Very, very few are self-contained like WinX DVD Ripper Platinum, so you don't have to worry about breaking your other video programs/players. If you want/need wmv, I think you could do better, but not without a bit of work -- Microsoft's free encoder isn't the easiest to use, especially since many settings can only be made in the registry using a separate & fairly confusing app. All in all if you work with video I'd suggest you grab today's WinX DVD Ripper, because being portable, the only thing it'll cost is your time -- if it ever comes in handy it'll be a great investment.

figured out the problem on the laptop. since it's fairly new, the region code had never been set on the DVD drive. once i selected it and restarted WinX DVD Ripper, the error message didn't occur.
program now works perfectly on both systems and ripped the DVD faster than other programs i have used with no audio syncing issues.

I've got a DVD made from a camcorder tape played into a set top DVD-recorder. I tried with all the other editing and ripping software I had to get the mpeg files off this DVD on to my computer so I could edit it, with the result always being that only the first 6 minutes of a 17 minute clip and 30 seconds of a 6 minute clip would play, it was as if the remainder of the clip did not exist. However this giveaway did its stuff and the result was perfectly playable, so that makes it a keeper for me. However, it would help if there was the option to keep the original bit rate for the audio and video. As it is currently I can't easily see what the bit rate is so I can set the output appropriately, but if I set it too high I get the 'Conversion wrong, please try again' message somebody else mentioned earlier.

The only interesting thing I've noticed is that for the previous GAOTD Winx DVD Ripper Platinum giveaway it was version 5.1.1
For this current giveaway its version 5.1
David (comment above) if it were me with the invalid key error I'd use the free and highly rated Revo Uninstaller to uninstall the program and not Windows or the program's own uninstaller. Hopefully you're able to install it at least as a demo, then I'd install and run Revo Uninstaller which will uninstall as the standard one does, plus quickly scan your hard drive and registry for things left behind. If it finds remnants the standard is to select all files it finds and hit delete, and do the same with any left behind registry entries. Then it would probably be worth it to reboot your PC and once back up and stable try the current install again and see if you still get that key error.
My guess is it could be that the ripper given away a while back (v5.1.1) doesn't accept the same key as the one (v5.1) they're giving away today.

This version, 5.1.6, still doesn't work on a Zune. Yes, it has Zune presets, and rips, and plays in the Zune software. But it won't sync to the Zune ("file is corrupt or invalid").
We had the same problem with v5.1.1 of this product, and also with a separate offering from a different company, "Extra DVD to All MP4 Ripper." For the latter product, that company then released a separate product here named "Extra DVD to Zune Ripper" that only ripped to the Zune, and it worked properly.
