Hmm. Been using it for a while, and it's been on all day. Now, mid-afternoon, a dialog pops up again and again, a WinLog Assist error dialog, "LastInputInfo error". I've had to click it about a dozen times and it kept coming back.

i find thins application very use full, my partner is all ways complaining about how much time i spend playing games, and making addon's for the games (rigs of rods etc..) , with this i can prove just how little(not realy) time i spend doing meaning less tasks.
++ for the developer.

This is very helpful program for me, a lot of projects of mine are paid per hour - so it is gives freedom to think about work and not about watch. Later I will collect hours I really spend on this work and can send a bill without bad conscious. Thanks a lot!

#35 Fubar. Thanks for the info. -- WinLog Assist does indeed seem to filter out its own time data. However, this then increases the time for some other slice. Thank goodness, it won't impact me much, but some of the commenters talk about using it for billing their customers -- if they bill for 300 minutes (based on WinLog Assist) when they only worked 270, they've overbilled. If they say "I took 300 minutes" and another programmer says "Gee, I only took 270", they've made themselves look unproductive.

What it comes down to is, WinLog Assist does not just leave out the numbers for its own use. It gives numbers for everything else that are, well, wrong. I know, I know, the numbers are close, close enough for me. But, if one uses it for billing ... they're wrong.

I see that "AutoRun" sticks WinLog Assist into your list of programs that run when you log in. I see that "Auto Pause" is a timeout to tell the thing when to stop counting a window's time (i.e., I turned Auto Pause off, and later that day WinLog Assist told me all about my screensaver).

Ashraf: I see from Ashraf's review that "Locking Quit" is supposed to keep one from turning WinLog Assist off. (I haven't been able to get that to work yet.)

Fubar, Ashraf, thanks for the explanation of projects in Ashraf's review.

Still don't have a way to reset the numbers except to wait past midnight.

Using "Log" in the title -- as in "logger" -- is certain to heavily bias these ratings. A "logger" encounters ideological objections, plus "loggers" are simpler, cheaper programs. The developer should take away a message about the product's name, not its quality.

Good
- Recognizes tabs in browser (opera)

Bad

- only timed when you actively select a window.

Conclusion:
Gives me an idea how much time i spend per application.

Works as advertised. I like statistics, so i am keeping this program. :)

I'd like to clarify my comment from earlier today. To be clear, I much prefer my Windows Vista to my XP system. Like it or not, thats my choice. It seemed to take forever to get it right but thats because I'm a perfectionist. I reformatted many times due to what the next guy would have considered a minor annoyance. Again, my choice. But to be clear, 95% of my issues from day one, (way back in February 2007) were caused by software. Not hardware or drivers because the hardwares fine in my machine & I update my drivers as often as new releases are available to the consumer.
There has been & remains today, way to many applications that claim Vista compatibility when in actually their not, but rather fly by night publishers trying to keep their share of our money. The same applies to way to many free applications. It simply took such a long time for me to weed these programs out & learn which ones actually do support Vista. That & continued updates, patches & the service packs finally did it. Now, it's faster, more stable & certainly looks better then any XP I've seen & I own all three. It's a funny thing but XP freezes, Windows Explorer crashes on XP when those problems never occur on Vista, at least not on mine.
Now to clarify what I meant about XP to defrag my slave & external hard drives. It has been & remains the ONLY safe defrag that can compact files on that particular drive, keeping it running at its best & I've tried them all. On Vista, I use AUSLogics free defrag & it suits me fine as I have no need to sweat compacting those files. Vista will put them back where they were in a matter of days anyway and the one in Vista positively sucks.
Once again, about Almeza Company, I'd rather have GOTD shut down for a day then to offer garbage reruns like this company makes. I've seen them all & they have one thats fair. That would be their PIM which I have installed on both Vista & XP.
I'm not knocking anyone elses opinion but thats mine, plain & simple.

I installed this on Vista Home Premium with no problems and it works like a charm.
As far as I can see, the auto pause stops the time recording after the interval of inactivity that you choose. If you input projects then they show up on the screen with other timed activities. ie you can monitor the time spent on your important projects.
I agree with others that you have the choice whether to use this or not and should not whinge about it until you know what you are talking about - that is have taken it for a test run and figured out what it can or cannot do for you. If you do not have a need for a tool like this, fine, but that does not mean that it is useless or bad.

Hi all!!

This program looks good for employers to spy on their workers at work or for parents to check what their kids actually do whenever they use their PC at home, but it's pretty useless for home use IMHO.

BEST FREEWARE ALTERNATIVES (forget RESCUETIME.COM if you take your privacy seriously...LOL!!!)

- PC Fare Meter
- Work Tracker
- Timeloc 1 (needs the free Adobe AIR software first)
- PTimer 1.5.1
- My Time Manager 1.0.1

But if you need a professional software for effective PROJECT MANAGEMENT to maximize the profitability of your business keeping track of the exact time spent on a particular application or project (Time is Money, right??), I definetely suggest you having a look at these 2 little and pretty unknowm FREE TOOLS:

- actiTIME Basic 1.5:
http://www.download.com/actiTIME-Basic/3000-2076_4-10852404.html?tag=mncol

- Advanced Time Reports Personal Edition:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Finances-Business/Advanced-Time-Reports-Personal-Edition.shtml

An intuitive time tracking & project management solution that will help you increase your billable hours by better managing all your projects, clients and working hour.

With this tool you can keep your project history so that you can retrieve it when you need it as well as create detailed project reports so you can compare your schedule to initial project estimate.

Cheers

Giovanni

there are 39 comments at the time I post this so if someone answers my question, know that I am not more of a dumb ass than i already feel like. Or in my case a JACKASS.
I forgot that task manager can run in a mini mode and all you have to do is double click the border and the full manager is there.
It was information floating around in my empty head that just came to the forefront.
So to any that may answer. Thank you and my apologies.

#36, jack, don't panic, it's just a UI feature of the Windows Task Manager. Just double-click in the gray area surrounding the window, as shown in this article.

#37, gonwk, while I can't guarantee that the installer doesn't do something different on another PC, especially running a 64-bit OS, I suspect that your problems are just a coincidence. Or, it may be that you need to move the files and perhaps update some shortcuts, I remember someone said that screensavers install to a different location on 64-bit Vista. I don't like 2Flyer's coding at all. They dump files that don't belong there into \Windows and \Windows\System32 (at least on 32-bit Vista). Their screensaver builder is actually a screensaver itself. The Help, About box should show that it's a full professional version.

I like getting to try out different programs for free and having to read posts like that one is just a total waste of everyone's time. If you have nothing useful to say, say nothing at all.

As for today's offer, I'm going to give it a try.

fubar HELP!

I downloaded the program here yesterday and then I noticed today that my task manager had disappeared except for the process window. When I go to task manager that is all that comes up. It may have had nothing to do with the download but in any case do you or anyone here know how to restore it. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

#25-27, Tom, #32, Antonio, see my comments #16 and 23. (And to those giving #23 a thumbs-down, Ashraf didn't update his review until after I posted.) Most time-trackers show their own time, WinLog Assist filters its own out. I could have linked the earlier giveaway (you used to be able to directly link the comments, but then GOTD started that awful first three comments limit crap), but I figured people would have brains enough to click on the publisher GOTD link at the top of every offering, or to type "WinLog Assist" into the GOTD search box.

When WinLog Assist wasn't responding to its tray context menu, it was causing some interference with the Vista taskbar. While this was repeatable, after one of the times I restarted it, it started working again (double-click always worked).

If I really needed this for business, I'd use PC Fare Meter if it still worked. It used to work on Vista, I still have the data, but even after reinstalling, it's the only time tracker which isn't seeing window captions. PC Fare Meter has no documentation, but 0.98 has a better UI than 0.97. I did try TimeTracker, it's more versatile than WinLog Assist but primitive compared to PC Fare Meter, and needs some external processing (there's a manual on its website). TimeSnapper Pro has lots of interesting features, but the UI needs a lot of improvement. It has clunky drag-and-drop column handling, they need to change it to Vista-style. I have it set to 6-second resolution, which will capture all but very brief windows. Some of its reports would need external processing in a business situation (although you can generally get it to display what you want within the program). It keeps application/window tracking data even if the snapshots have been auto-deleted.

#29, mike, #31, ric, yes, Vista used to crash frequently. Sending the crash reports to Microsoft eventually resulted in fixed software. While third-party software may be largely to blame, it's Microsoft's fault for building OSes which still don't perform the basic functions of an OS, which is for the OS to protect itself from applications and drivers, to protect applications and drivers from each other, for the OS to update itself and not allow applications to do so, to keep track of ownership of all resources and release them when the applications terminate or are uninstalled, and on and on. In most cases, if a developer hasn't updated their products for Vista, they're not following recommended coding guidelines in the first place (there are some situations where the code does need to have some significant changes to accommodate Vista, but most software only needs simple fixes). IE never crashes Vista, although IE can crash. IE8 generally only allows individual tabs to crash, and it restarts them. The current Google Toolbar isn't IE8 compatible, and needs to be disabled at times. I like a number of the features in IE8 better than Firefox. As I have a Media Center PC, DVD software isn't an issue. Mine came with a version that supports HD-DVD and Blu-Ray within Media Center, but I bought PowerDVD 8 Ultra (at a substantial discount). PowerDVD 8 Ultra is guaranteed to have frequent updates, as the DRM requires it. By the way, many of the issues with displaying folders in Vista Explorer can be solved by Resetting the folders.

I have been using this program since last year. It’s a simple little tool that generates detailed reports using Excel. They use a pie chart, which is an effective way of leaving no doubt where a person’s time has been spent. I can understand someone thinking this program is only good for Home Office or Freelance workers, but it was an eye opener when I saw where my free time was being spent. It’s light on resources and I’d recommend this program as a good addition to anyone’s software library. If I had anything negative to say, it would be about its exclusivity to Excel for its report generation.

I can empathize with all the people who don’t have Excel and use OpenOffice Impress instead. I think it’s a bit short sided on the part of the developer not to recognize a growing market where significant money could be made. I’m not a programmer, but it doesn’t seem as if having compatibility with Impress would be that big of a deal. Word and Writer are interchangeable, so why not Excel and Impress?

category-killer! Hey, quibble all one will, but there's NOTHING as good as this fine Program.

Except :-)...what the heck is "project". Although it would seem a terrific feature, its Option window offers no real configuration? What's "wrong" with that Feature, or is it just me? And, why should I have to ask, as it should be a pretty recognizable setting, no?

Please "fix" it, or offer an Explanation during today's Offering. Tanx!

The MSExcel conversion is SUPERIOR in every way. Good work. Can it also be Optioned to open in OpenOffice3, or any generic spreadsheet, too? Please don't limit your clientele, as this IS 2009, yes? And Linux isn't sooo "bad", ya know:-)

Tanx for the Russian language option, too, as now I know how intricate that script is. Wow!

i do feel the need to make a coment about the xp -v- vista complaints.

i work with pc's a lot and mainly still stick with xp. i have to say that even with sp1 and updates i still find vista has problems. i am a consumer. i want a gui that works with a variety and as much software as possible. there is a very good reason why some developers don't seem to bother updating their software products for vista. it is the same reason many still stick with xp and as in my case choose to 'downgrade' to it.

i do have vista on my latest LT and am using it now. but it has hardly anyting on it. even the usual oem software has dried up for vista. when i buy dvd drives i still get bundled software but unlike when the OS was xp they don't even come with a vista comapatible dvd player, but i have loads of cds with oem dvd players for xp. the commenter on 2 years of updates has a point in that it has taken 2 years of user feedback for MS to get vista to something like a decent product. where does the sale of goods act come in with MS?

but vista though nice to look at it is still not my preferred choice. it does lock up and can be unstable for no apparent reason. IE is still a major culprit (so i try to use firefox instead) and i do not see how other software can always be blamed. if it is supposed to work with windows then it should do so. and as windows still crashes with MS own software..... also MS i understand make it very difficult for developers to be able to develop because of the way the code is supplied to them. i believe they charge them extortionate amounts of money which for a small developer it simply is not worth the outlay when so many of us still choose to use xp and it is therefore still not 'a given' that vista is worth the developers investment in time and money.

i admit i hate MS and windows. it was rubbish when it was hurriedly introduced ahead of the mac OS and has taken a long time and a lot of (our) money to get to anything like a reasoanble product (SoGA anyone). plus we have been forced to accept it becuase of the way MS has forced pc supliers to supply pcs to us with MS as the only choice or else no licence to supply with windows at all.... ever... i.e. we had little choice. windows x.x or.....

i only stick with windows now because it is such a bad product there is always work for me.:)

i have an autistic child who spends too much time on the pc and i am always getting into arguements with him as he lies to me about what he has been doing on it. so this software may just stop some arguements. i'd rather use this than stand over him or give him the 'spanish inqusistion'. plus as he is aware it is there and what it does he may be on it for far less time.

it will also be useful for me as i get distracted when online so then wonder where all the hours went?

i don't install everything on offer just because it's free but it does annoy me when people make negative comments about freebee software that are actually inaccurate and ignorant and also when people get angry and consistently complain when they are getting something for nothing. especially when they also get the benefit of others experience before deciding on whether or not to install it on their pc. that is selfish. it is a daily offer and if these products were not re-offered many would not get the chance to try them out. just think of yourselves guys.

take no notice of the NEGS and keep up the good work GAotD.

#24 & 28: Totally FWIW, I had an install of win98 SE going for ~8 years over 3 or 4 m/board, cpu combos... Have been running XP Pro 32 since beta, & same with Vista 32. As millions of other folks, I'm also playing around with the Win 7 beta. Since win 95 actually I haven't had problems on any of our machines with Windows crashing or not running properly -- I've never known & rarely read of anybody before that has [I am NOT talking about bugs & annoyances, but problems with Windows itself causing stalls or crashing]. In my limited experience those are almost always (99% ?) caused by hardware (not properly set up) &/or drivers &/or to a lesser extent, poorly written software.

Now I'm not criticizing or doubting what you've posted [really don't mean to if it sounds that way], but rather want to suggest that there's really no reason to put up with experiences like that, especially for a couple of years. I hate to repeat a cliche, but Google really is your friend. Research before you buy or add most anything -- research drivers, especially before updating -- and when you have a problem both research to find others with the same or similar problems who've fixed it, & post on-line for help. There really is little reason to have problems today with XP or Vista, with millions of users who have already tried just about everything, & found/posted solutions to whatever didn't work.

While there's nothing wrong with Titan Backup (which if I remember correctly uses the zip format), while you're waiting you might want to check out Toucan [portableapps.com] -- personally I use Paragon Drive Backup, but that's a disc image solution. For defrag you might look at JKDefrag (one of the very top rated defrag programs) or Defragler from the folks behind CCleaner... maybe that would eliminate having to have 2 OSes?

#24 It took "You" almost 2 years to get Vista to run properly? Strange it seems with alot of MS Updates that "THAT'S" Why Vista runs properly... Come to think of it it IS Why, and also now most all my old software titles install and run perfectly on Vista, Iam happy with Vista it's super now.

I have a very important question for the authors of this program . . .

Having spent considerable time in the last half hour poking around inside my WinLog Assist,

Why doesn't WinLog Assist tell me I've spent any time in WinLog Assist?

Why does it claim to precisely track each second, and actually put up numbers that show each second is accounted for, and yet it misses the minutes I've spent inside the WinLog Assist app itself?

I can only assume (1) the program's algorithm just doesn't track its own time, and (2) the time I've spent in this program has been added to the time displayed for other programs.

For instance, it now tells me I have spent 34 minutes in FireFox, and 2 minutes in Explorer, 36 in all. But I've spent something like 10 minutes in WinLog Assist, and it's possible the real numbers are: 10 in Winlog Assist, 25 in FireFox, 1 in Explorer, for 36 in all.

Easy enough to duplicate. Open WinLog Assist, work inside it for about five minutes, then close and open again and see where it says you've spent your time.

Continuing my comment #25:

Can anyone explain what "Auto Pause" is?

And "Projects" . . . what is a 'project', and why would one want an _ordered_ list of them? (The project page has "move up" and "move down" buttons.) Looks like, if one knew how to do 'projects', it would, possibly, be very useful . . . but that one could take a long time to try and figure it out without instructions, and still fail at figuring it out.

Hmm. A mixed bag on this one. I am very glad that it does display time spent on a program in real time minutes and seconds -- the web site's ( http://www.mytimeassist.com/content/view/25/68/ ) screen shot seemed to show CPU time -- it shows the user spent 5 seconds in Word, and 1 second in WinAmp, and 19 seconds in Frigate.

And, as silly as that sounds, it is a real problem for me. As I have said, "documentation, documentation, documentation". No help file, so I see Options like "Autorun" and "Locking Quit" ... what the heck are these? Anyone? No explanations in the program, and I didn't find any at the web site, so how are we supposed to get good at using it?

And then, they really can't blame me if I look at their screenshot and wonder if the thing is tracking CPU time with a screenshot like that.

THAT SAID . . . I installed it 9 minutes and 9 seconds ago, and it easily is telling me how I have spent each of those 549 seconds, even which web pages were open for only thirty seconds.

It installed and does what it says, it seems. That is helping me this morning as I try to see where my time is going.

I'm sick of Almeza Company because their to lazy to update some of their programs to include Vista compatibility. I'm sick of garbage repeats!
I'm looking for one only & that would be Titan Backup. Once again, thanks but no thanks. I'm not into putting my personal information in software thats poorly written, be it spy-ware or not.
I don't try something because it's free for a day, especially on Vista! It took almost 2 years to get Vista to run properly & stable. Mostly because of garbage software that caused conflicts & sometimes because of me. I'll be damned if I'll risk it again!
OK, so blame Vista. Who cares? But now my Vista waxes my XP system in every way. It never freezes, Windows Explorer never crashes like it does on XP. I keep XP for one reason only. To use it's defrag on my slave & external hard drives. Now, just imagine that!

The only difference I see between 2.1 and 2.3 is that 2.3 will keep an application with its project, which 2.1 didn't do across sessions. However, its continuing complete lack of features makes it useless for businesses.

Again a useless piece of software for most. The dates change but the offers don't. Very repetitive. Not much NEW stuff. Most now have already been offered at least once. Many of them are of very little use to the majority.

Anything different in the near future would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Multiple locations for work. Unnecessary for a person

This is a multiple repeat, virtually unchanged from last time, maybe a minor change to a language file. The quality is quite poor, and it's interfering with my Vista taskbar, as well as not responding to the context menu. You can read my comments from last time, particularly #20 and #48, which have links to alternatives. I should note that PC Fare Meter, by far the best application of this type feature-wise, is no longer functioning properly on my PC (it's recording application names but won't record window captions anymore). It's always had great features, a poor UI, and absolutely horrible coding, so that leaves me without any good alternatives, as the others all suck compared to PC Fare Meter (the latest version is still 0.98). TimeSnapper Pro (commercial) is by far the best at recording screen captures, but it doesn't have the fine resolution of capturing window usage that programs which only monitor windows do.

RescueTime.com seems pretty reliable. Here is their privacy policy (they have a typo, lols).

Also, you can delete your data at any time.

I agree that I would be skeptical to store such information on a web server, but cloud computing is coming soon (4-5 years?) ladies and gents; we gotta embrace it sometime or another. Now RescueTime is not cloud computing, but still the concept is the same.

Yet another sick program to allow people to spy on one another and ruin their lives and perhaps marriages.

I agree with Paul - # 5 - and Anton - # 9 - that this simple tool can be very useful for tracking time (and therfore often expenses and billing times) on a home based computer.

I've installed, registered and tried it, and like the simple clear interface. I'll be using it daily.

I'm the only one using my computer, but if I shared it with others I wouldn't be so keen. To be more widely appealing, the program needs a privacy password function for multiple users.

Thanks GOTD and Almeza.

Oh, and if you don't want an activity monitored, You can just switch it off automatic and use it for manual logging.

...For those few of us who occasionally do secret things lol

Thx for your comments Ashraf - I always read them avidly and appreciate them.

However, I can't believe you're actually recommending people let their time use date be stored externally on a webserver?

Not for me. I'll stick with this Winlog...

Installed ok, XPsp2. As Ashraf says, no help is supplied, but then the program is automatic and really quite simple. Delete Database works for me.

This tool may not suit all users but can be handy when wanting to track time spent on a PC. It's one of those things that should be a generic extra "built into windows at users option" and reminds me quite a bit of Lifeblog on my Nokia N95 which keeps a record of my days activities on the mobile.
Seems to work well and not chew up too much memory which is nice so I might leave it installed and use it as a "pc" journal of my past.
Note that it has obvious security issues though as anyone can see what you did on the pc should you do of visit anything that is not so above board ;-O

Just so people know, I tested this program on Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Even though Vista is not officially supported, the trend with Almeza software is that they usually work on Vista anyway. This program pretty much worked also - the only problem I ran into one problem. However, I think that problem is universal and not because of Vista.

The Good
* Easy to use.
* Very nice exportation of data in Excel (w/ graphs and all).
* Tracks the time when you are actually using a program, not how long you have it open.
* Has an "AutoPause" ability in case people go idle.

The Bad
* Resource intensive for a program that only monitors your app usage time.
* No Help section what so ever.
* You can't delete your stored data ("Delete database" results in error).
* No way to exclude certain programs from being monitored.
* No password protection.

Free Alternatives
RescueTime

Verdict
Does WinLog Assist monitor and record your application usage times? Yes it does. However, aside from the really nice export to Excel ability, that is just about all this program does. No password protection, no filter, no ability to delete your activity, no nothing. Thumbs down for this program. If you really want to be able to track your activity, I suggest go with RescueTime. RescueTime is a really nice service, and even tho the free accounts are kind of crippled compared to the paid ones, it will still help you successfully track your activity. However to use RescueTime you must be willing to allow your activity be stored on RescueTime.com because that is the only way the service works.

Installed & runs fine on XP Pro sp 2. Haven't had time yet to use it for a long day on my PC, but I decided to try it & it seems to work fine. Will use it over the next few days to see what I really have been wasting my time doing, & it's a keeper for me, as I often wonder where the time went & what took so long to do that it's now 2 am. lol:) Lately it seems I use more time on PC doing maintenance for the PC, than anything else. Maybe I'll discover I spend most time playing a game. (Oh no.) lol
Thanks GOTD & Almeza! :)

Of course, there is a lot of freewares that can do better than this program. But as soon as it's free, why do not test this ?

For a free program, it does a good work and you can know what other persons have done on your computer !

my opinion : it's a good program but I won't spend money to have this an other day !

Perfect tool for keeping me on my toes and helps with my daily usage of time management. Being more productive and properly billing each customer for my remote online computer repairs; since I do everything from my own PC.

Seems like a nice program if you're tracking you're kid's or spouse's usage, or if you work from your home computer, but not that useful for myself, I'll pass on this one..They seem to put up these programs twice as much as anything else, I wonder why.
