Installed it - version 8 - I came back and stated I needed a different version to view the free template, so it would not load. Useless to me.

After reading the reviews from users etc, i think i will pass on this
offer today, as 46Mb is wasted on Basically a trial Version, if the
publisher at least offered the compact version, then i would have tried
it for sure.
Thanks anyway, GOTD

Tried it and was not impressed. It stretched the images, distorting them horribly, and when using one of the templates, it darkened the title and footer so much that it was barely visible, and also distorted the footer text. The themes are very basic as well, most suited for a site with very little content.

Sorry, I'm sticking to Notepad and Filezilla :/ On a day where I'm bored, I may open Dreamweaver, but prefer Notepad...

One viewer commented above that web site creation software, such as WebSite X5, are becoming obsolete because of WordPress. I concur with that assessment. Notice that GOTD is "Powered by WordPress".

If one is a total novice to WP, he or she might look to WordPress.com for a pretty easy WP solution.

this program is a joke. a bad one.

some of the templates one their website are not compatible with this version.

It's not fair to compare it to Dreamweaver and I'm not. it's only good for my 5 years old's first website to show to her toys

Win XP SP 3 wont install

Win zip self extractor thankyou for installing WebsiteX5
we 23F tmp Please wait ,..... and wait and wait . Nothing happens

It opens up the browser to the GOTD site to say installed , but it hasn,t.
Twice I have tried installing, will do a restart and see if that makes any difference. If I click cancel , it looses the temp files , then goes on to install, but no longer has the all the files , because I have had to click cancel.

Looking forward to trying this prog .

Download and install went ok (I use default font so that wasn't an issue for me)
It can't create horizontal menu templates (it was available on first run, not the second time, but it didn't work anyway when tested).
Only 3 effects enabled (Drop shadow, Mirror, Color).
The free templates you can download were made in version 7 and are NOT compatible with this version.
No custom import option and several other features missing from what's shown in the tutorial video.
Only 46 templates provided out of the "Gallery of 184 pre-defined templates (46 unique templates in 4 different colours)"

Looks more like a free demo than the normal giveaway of the day free software, overall I give thumbs down to this version (seems like I recall and older giveaway version as being better),

Thanks anyway and thanks to the GAOTD Team

Hey! If you really want to use a wysiwyg editor, then opt for "WYSIWYG Website Editor" by Pablo Software.

This is, I think, the best in its category(I know there is at least two heavyweights).

You can download a fully functional trial to taste the power.

Because of the limits with this program, I think people might want to consider a freeware program, Serif WebPlus. One can make a pretty decent website with this, and if you want more, they have paid versions as well. I've used this company for years. They have plenty of freeware versions of most of their software to sort of use as demos, but they are fully functional without time limit. Here's the link: http://www.serif.com/web-design-software/?mc=FSSWEBPLUS

I understand when complaints are made about installation errors and buggy software, but I don't get complaints about limited features in software that's not being presented as a deluxe, pro, or ultimate version. Sometimes we are lucky and premium versions of software is available free, and other times it is something basic.

Incomedia offers a special edition of their software exclusively for Corel and this version that is available in magazines.

After reading numerous complaints on this site about free software, I decided not to be the same way. I am grateful that I have been able to find some useful software over the year since I discovered this site.

Well, turned off AVG, extracted everything, and installed it before AVG reactivated itself, only to meet with this error before I can get past step one:
"Run-time error '-2147417848 (80010108)':

Automation error"

So first I have to fight with a false positive (which I don't exactly like doing, it makes me feel like it's my fault if it messes with the computer), and then afterwards I can't even get past the first step due to software bugs. Yeah. Really good software. :/

#39: "... I believe that it’s a shame that GAOTD has decided to promote this basic version, because this goes against the mission on the basis of which this great service was originally created!"

Did the GOTD crew make that decision or did Incomedia?
In the past whenever a license has been too limited for example, it was the GOTD folks who had to go after the dev to change things. It was the dev who decided/determined that stuff. And when that sort of thing has happened, I've always gotten the impression the dev was maybe less up front with GOTD, &/or maybe less honest than they could have been. ;-)

#42: "During install on Win7 Ultimate I got error message “File Missing C:\\Windows\System32\COMCTL32.OCX”. I clicked OK and the install continued. Does anyone know what this file is and where I can get a copy to download?"

Check to see if you don't have it already by searching your hard drive(s) -- if not re-install running as admin. -- if that doesn't work Google/Bing [235k hits with Google], download, put it in System32 if win7 32 bit, SysWOW64 if 64 bit, then register it there. Google/Bing on how to register OCX files -- for 32 bit files I just use an old app called RegDrop.exe [I keep it on my desktop], but in 7 I have to run it as admin.

Far as what it is, it's a VB support file -- Properties description: "Windows Common Controls ActiveX Control DLL"

#44: "Newbie, want to create a site with exclusive access ( user name and password ), interactive pages with 3 levels of access , web store, feedback section, payment online etc..."

AFAIK you'd most likely do the restricted access & payment systems using settings/tools/services provided by your web hosting company... when it comes to the store & payment end of things I don't think you'd want to handle that yourself anyway if this is something you're just getting started with. Many web hosts will also provide feedback, email, analytics etc. that are fairly easy to use & integrate with the pages you created using your tools or theirs.

Once you have that stuff mapped or diagrammed out so you have an idea of the structure, you create the web pages that will hold your content, provide access to your store etc. How you create those & what software you use to do it is pretty much up to you, though IMHO today's SMART 8 version would be too light, & you'd have to do additional editing elsewhere.

Hello All,

I have alot of experience in PHP, HTML and CSS and know alot of this kind of programs.

But i must say, i'm impressed..
I've never seen a program with this clean code.

Normally you have like thousands of div's and other crap, but for a program that is generating the code this looks very, very good.

Still i will stay on scripting it all by myself.

Still, Thanks GAOTD And good luck developers of this program.

I have used this in the past. It is quite straightforward, but it always niggled me that [at the time at any rate] when you published a site it re uploaded every file, not just changed ones.

Nowadays I just use Google sites, its web based and free and has some nice features.

For those with font size issues, you should not reboot when changing the size to 100%, a simple log off/log on to your windows account should be enough.

WebSite X5 SMART 8 is a wizard based VB [Visual Basic] app for creating [not so much maintaining] a simple web site. The html pages it creates use css & are easy to read -- that last part is cool because it makes editing elsewhere easier [html is not always human friendly]. It gives you maybe a bit more freedom than some template based alternatives, where you place text, images, video/sound, & Flash on a grid you set up, has an Advanced Settings step with Main & Dropdown Menus, but nothing for buttons & provides very little help for links. Personally I'd classify WebSite X5 SMART 8 as web site software for those people with few PC-related skills who don't want to learn -- you could do better in Word, using on-line tools, or with any of dozens of web site/page creation apps, but that requires some minimal learning -- although I could see someone using WebSite X5 SMART 8 as a first step to build on elsewhere.

Monitored installation was well behaved but higher impact with 4616 new registry entries -- depending on the VB support files you already have installed, the number of VB support files added & the number of new registry entries could vary [with the installer used I'm not certain of what VB-related files it contains]. Along with COMCTL32.OCX installed to Windows system folder, I got the program's folder with 1,130 files, 281 folders, ~30 Mb, plus Start Menu & Desktop shortcuts. Beside both VB 5 & 6, Process Explorer shows WebSite X5 SMART 8 using Internet Explorer.

I think like most practical-minded people I generally make decisions based on whether it's worth it or not. I use larger [Medium] fonts in win7 because it's easier than putting my glasses on/off, but switching to normal display isn't a big deal [requires a log off/on], & I don't mind *If* that's my only choice. When it comes to WebSite X5 SMART 8, Google on "html software" & I get "About 1,800,000,000 results", so today's GOTD would have to be awful special to make it worth it... IMHO it's not. I don't like to use VB apps in win7 because they can be a bit more trouble prone as .NET gets involved. Given a choice between an app that adds very few or no registry entries, & an app that adds 4500+, all things being equal I'll take the one that adds less... practically speaking WebSite X5 SMART 8 isn't equal but does less than most. That said, not everyone focuses on being practical [this app wouldn't have made it to version 8 if they were ;-) ], & it looks nice & does let just about anyone put together a web site with near zero learning or thought.

Change your Video settings to SUPER SMALL under "good luck finding it in control panel", grab a magnifying lense, restart your computer to apply settings (don't worry whatever you're working on is NOT as important as your WEB SITE software) so go ahead and close ALL PROGRAMS. And then when you DO restart you'll find a LIMITED version installed...thank god uninstall was super quick...

Hey guys;

I've used the upgraded version of this program for several years and I can tell you, without a doubt, this is a great program. Not this version but the upgraded version. This "smart" version is very limited and not worth the time or effort but if you can see your way to paying the $49 for the upgraded version you will be satisfied with the program. The big problem is with the advent of WP this program is quickly becoming obsolete, consequently, I'd rater invest my $'s on WP plugins.

I know, this is a mixed review but I do have mixed feelings about this program. For someone like me, with very limited programing experience, the upgraded version will really help you build and publish nice looking web sites. But again, the big limiting factor is the $49.00 price tag.

I hope this helped.

Dudes!!

This is the BASIC version of WebSite X5 with extremely limited features....so it's a good app but for NOOBS only!!

In fact WebSite X5 comes with 3 different versions: EVOLUTION 8, COMPACT 8 and SMART 8.

- WebSite X5 EVOLUTION 8 is the most advanced and profesional version, since it includes over 1400 templates and offers all the commercial tools you need to create professional websites & e-commerce shopping cart for credit card payments and blogs.

With this advanced version you can create, rMemberships Areas with multiple user profiles, INTRO pages with links for the choice of language, RSS Feeds and so on.

- WebSite X5 COMPACT 8 includes 500 templates and is designed for creating website for fun or for those sites that do not need all the advanced features of WebSite X5 Evolution 8.

- WebSite X5 SMART 8 (namely this GAOTD) includes just 100 templates with basic feature aimed at creating your first simple website.

Here you can find a comparison chart between the three versions:

http://www.websitex5.com/en/compare_3.html

As you can see at the top of the chart, NO PRICE is mentioned for the SMART version...LOL!!!

So it looks like this GAOTD is already FREE there, because it's the most basic version of the program!!

Now, although I appreciate GAOTD Team's effort for giving us FREE commercial products daily, I believe that it's a shame that GAOTD has decided to promote this basic version, because this goes against the mission on the basis of which this great service was originally created!

Cheers from Italy!

I tried this kind of software several years ago, but, soon discovered that each page had/has it's own CSS file, however, the templates are almost worth the download, and I'm using one for my wife's genealogy site, after I fixed the bloated CSS code issue.
The earliest versions were the best.

#17: "Old , and failing eyesight (?) , then if you can efford it you can connect your PC to a big flatscreen like a TV (I am using a 40″)…. Just remember, if you need D-Sub VGA connection..."

?... 1st step there's always large font, high contrast settings etc., which work pretty well in win7, which is cheaper than most monitors/TVs. 2nd is reducing the screen rez if your hardware supports it -- a pixel isn't a definite size like mm, so higher resolution settings, e.g. 1920x1080 vs. 1400x900, means you have more pixels but each of them is made smaller so they'll all fit. Reduce the screen rez & everything is bigger. 3rd, as you've mentioned you can always use a HDTV -- it doesn't have to be a big one, but you *Really* need to avoid standard TVs if at all possible because 720x480 std TV rez is just too small for most anything.

720p HDTVs in the 19-28" range are for the most part comparable with PC monitors in price, while 32-37" models can be had for $250-$300. All will have HDMI, some will have DVI as well, while most any near current PC will have a DVI &/or HDMI connector/plug. There are also very cheap adapter plugs to go DVI -> HDMI. If you're stuck with VGA/Dsub, if you watch the sales roughly $20-$30 will buy you either a VGA -> HDMI converter box or a USB -> HDMI converter. Assuming the whole purpose is accommodating impaired vision you don't need/want to bother with more expensive, higher rez 1080p HDTVs IMHO, nor should you need to worry about scan rates or any of that stuff if you're using old vga PC graphics hardware -- let the converter handle it... both cheaper & easier than buying a HDTV with vga in.

#25: "Other posters here have some easy, powerful, low-cost (or FREE?) web-building software packages for newbies?"

Assuming you're putting your site on-line [vs. an intranet etc.] my suggestion would be to first check out what your web hosting company has or offers. Often they'll have tools you use with customizable templates on-line [nothing to download/install] that also eliminate uploading &/or posting hassles -- you might also find their hosting packages include software licenses.

Otherwise there are perhaps more web page or site design/creation apps than there are video converters. ;-) Many are low cost or free. Some like WebSite X5 SMART 8 focus more on helping you create a complete site rather than individual pages, but better tools will better manage the collection of pages that are your site -- that's not being too hard on today's GOTD, but it is more their entry level product. Many web page/site creation tools are template based like WebSite X5 SMART 8, but many take it further -- using today's GOTD is Not just filling in the blanks the way you do with many word processor templates. And of course many tools don't use templates this way at all -- basing your site on *canned* templates is both faster & easier, but it can also be obvious... it's up to you whether that matters or not.

Depending on what you're after you might check out NetObjects [netobjects.com] -- they offer a free Essentials version -- or maybe for a more page rather than site approach check out Fresh HTML [freshwebmaster.com] which is always free.

If people here do not appreciate civil advice then it is their problem.
But as to your writng then you could also stop all together reading on screens and papers if you prefer. All I have done is to give who ever wishes advice on how to not have problems seeing what is going on on the screen even if they have "vision issues".
I am sitting at a 40" screen at less than 8 feets distance - not that I am that "impared" - I just don't have room for both the TV and a large PC screen.

Ok for outright beginners but this isn't even the Compact version let alone the Evolution version!

Expect very limited features, though you can still get good results!

This seems like a good idea for a programme. However, it will not load in my system without display problems. It would appear that this is a special GOTD stripped version, hence not beta tested and thus PROBLEMS.

Strange: the official "Compare versions" page, available from the homepage of the site, is this one: http://www.websitex5.com/en/compare.html
It shows Compact 8 ($39.95) and Evolution 8 ($69.95), but there is no mention of Smart 8.

Watcher1924 gave another Compare Version link in post #20: http://www.websitex5.com/en/compare_3.html. Not sure where he got the link, but I can't find any direct link to that page on the site.
On that hidden page, Smart 8 is listed (as well as the Compact and Evolution versions), but without any price. So, I guess that the Smart 8 version is always free, or has been created just for this GOTD. The Smart version has so many features stripped down that it should be free anyway.

This is really not acceptable. When a company offers a product to GOTD, it should at least offer the first payware version of their catalog. Offering a free or demo version is not a giveaway.

I'll pass on this one, without even trying it, because I hate dishonesty.

When I try to start the program it gives me a message about using normal font settings even though I'm already doing so. And it tells me to use select Advanced Windows Settings from Control Panel, even though I'm using XP and there is no such thing. Someone obviously didn't do their job. Since I can't even get the program running I'm unable to use it.

#13 thanks for WYSIWYG Web Builder suggestion, I'll check it out. Other posters here have some easy, powerful, low-cost (or FREE?) web-building software packages for newbies?
