Anyone remember the old screensaver Johnny Castaway?

It would be neat to have a similar one with an astronaut castaway on some alien planet....

I like this screensaver. I usually like any water and fish screensavers. I wish that the kind of fish could be changed but other than that, it's enjoyable.

We all have different elements that we look for in a screensaver and this one is rather fitting when I'm in a silly mood. No, the graphics aren't the best, but it does entertain me and sometimes that's just what I need. And the price is perfect.

Once again I see comments from Vista users complaining that an application doesn't work. It does, really. It's all in how you installed it. I posted in the comments for Wondershare Video to Flash Encoder from the other day an easy way to make all the Give Away of the Day freebies work. Go take a look if you're having issues installing on Vista and just like Petri from yesterday, you will find that it DOES work on Vista! :-)

WHAT? This is just a SCREENSAVER!?! MAN! WHATTA LETDOWN! I've spent the last 3 hours staring at this screen full of fish, and I wore out my gamer thumb pounding the buttons on my gamepad trying to get this one fish to do this thingy, and NOW you tell me it's just a SCREENSAVER?!?! 3 HOURS!!!! I AM SO MAD!!!!

This is a great screen saver, and I have passed along this site to several of my friends, who also think it's great. The only down side to the software that I have tried on your site is that one of the programs stopped working, because I was not a licensed owner. I wasn’t that impressed with that program, so this was no great loss. I have gone on to purchase software, as a result of trying their programs out here on your site. Thanks guys, this is great.

Not bad for a dx8 screensaver. No probs installing. Running perfectly on 4 x antialiassing. Saw lots of stuff, no treasures though. Don't agree with ~Swan (I think you have to reïnstall Windows, dear!). Although I would like better, I think it's as good as you can get on dx8. I do think it's built on a earlier version; hence the sideways moving fish. It really needs a complete rewright.
I would NEVER

I don't see what's so good about this screen saver. It was cartoonish and ugly. They say free but it's only free for 30 days! I continualy got the buy me screen until I got tired of seeing it and erased it in less than an hour.

Hey people, Put on task manager, leave it up on the performance tab. Let the screen saver run for about 5 minutes. Move the mouse and look at the level of CPU activity. I have a 2 core 3.0 GHz processor and it was running at around 75% processor load once the screen saver had settled down. After about an hour the ASUS probe started to howl warnings about overheated motherbaord.

The screen saver is very pretty and quite relaxing, until you think about what it is doing to your CPU!

I wasn't going to comment today, but decided to put in my 2 cents. Most of the graphics are good, but the plants just look really fake. What a shame to spoil such an otherwise pretty one with those awful looking plants. If you would fix the plants, then I would give it an 8, but with the plants..about a 2. It installed fine on my Vista.

I dont particularly like this screensaver. Everything from the plants, the rocks, sand, looks like they were bought in a dime store. Very fake looking. I dont dislike the screensaver, but it isnt all that great in my opinion. I guess the comment from Swan (#85) is kinda what I think, though I am no expert on under water effects, but I do know what looks real to me. Everything is a bit. Will more than likely uninstall it in the near future. It would have been more appealing if it had a theme, a small sunken ship or something. The Titanic SC was slightly better, a bit on the morbid side, which made me feel a lil sad watching it. Thanks GAOTD for the opportunity to get the software, and the ability to critique it. Funny, yesterday I didnt want a SC at all, but today I was in a rare bit of a mood for one. Go figure.

Good morning everyone,

I'm so angry with myself. :( I've just spent the last 1-1/2 hours writing up a review on this screen saver and answering people's questions - then lost it because I closed down Firefox instead of another program I'd meant to close.

So here's a much briefer review:

- Some of the plants are definitely only indoor pot plants and do not/cannot grow in the sea. There's a White Butterfly plant featured extensively and I've grown them in our home for years.

Having dived in many places, including Australia and Fiji, I can honestly attest to the fact that I have never seen the type of coral that is portrayed in this screen saver. It looks really odd, growing immediately out of the rock, with the tips looking like they've been pruned dead straight across.

One could argue that perhaps it's a kind of coral found only in seas and oceans colder than those that are around Australia and Fiji - but then you wouldn't have the tropical fish there either. ;)

Nature rarely has any dead straight lines in it;

- I've seen some incredible water surfaces in other underwater screen savers and this one is definitely not in their league. The surface seems almost static, appearing only to move slightly because of the rays of the sun. The surface needs more (fluid) and irregular fluctuation;

- Fish are really beautiful and look like the species they're meant to represent. The animation as they swim forward is nice and easy on the eyes, however, >fish never swim in reverse or move sideways;

- Music sounds like an orchestra tuning up before a performance;

- Lighting looks false - it's too even all the way through the animation - mottling of light on the sand bed could look even better if its appearance could be varied somewhat. The sun rays that shine through the surface look great though;

- I'm not sure what the partial stone statues are meant to tell us. There are several long arms that extend from the ocean floor, holding an even longer spear. When I first saw them, I thought perhaps we were going to see other clues that this might be the sunken Atlantis - but no such luck.

If there ever were such a diving discovery, I'd expect to see more than some long stone arms, a few stone arches (mostly all the same) and scattered treasure chests everywhere;

- The journey that we're taken on is fairly extensive. I think I watched it for around 15 mins (for review,) and never really came to the same place again. This was a nice feature for those who use screen savers for relaxation;

- The graphics are fairly well done in places, though the rock textures range from realistic to simply outlined drawings. Though the animation of the fish still needs work, the journey through the water is smooth the entire time.

- There are settings you can use to tweak it to one's own personal preferences. I left the defaults mostly on, but turned on anti-aliasing to 2 samples, which improved (though didn't completely eradicate,) the jagged edges on the long straight plants. Trying it on to 4 samples just made everything jerky. I also turned the music OFF.

I'm still in two minds whether to keep this screen saver or not. Perhaps I'll have a better idea after a few days.

My two absolute favorite screen savers that I've received through GotD are the Fireplace and the Clock - both by 3Planesoft. They are exquisite to say the least. I'd love to see them here again with yet another screen saver for us.

Thank you to Rixane Developers for their generosity in offering their screen savers. I sincerely hope that their graphic designer (and the company) will benefit from our various reviews. :)

Thank you also to GotD who continue to be the first stop, even on my busy days.

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Review: Some nice settings like speed and amounts of fish, ruins, etc. Various themes like Tropical, Blue, Deep Blue, etc. I does not take long to load like the Titanic screen saver. Unfortunately you cannot choose the quality of the outcome and the fishes aren't all convincing. Thanks for the screen saver. 7/10

Great Screen Saver, downloaded and activated with no problem, like the many ways you can change the configurations with more or less fish, more or less plants & ruins, and also changing from tropics to deep blue sea, Thanks For This Screen Saver goes well with the others I have found around the net, no pun intended!!!!

I agree with # 62 and #34, and the other one that talked about this stuff being free so stop complaining. Maybe GOTD could get a screensaver with butterflies? Some people are just not happy about anything and complain, even if stuff is free. GOTD could just stop doing this and then we would have nothing. I bet the habitual complainers would then really cry! I appreciate this site and enjoy it. Hope it continues to give the variety of programs that it does. :)

These fish are copied directly from marine aquarium (the best in my opinion) found at serenescreen.com! Nice twist but if you look at the demos on their site, you will see that this screen saver can't hold a candle to the original.

Get ready for my comments, small people. You can now open your ears!

First, this is a GREAT screen saver. Why? Because it is better than an actual aquarium, because with an actual aquarium, you have to feed the fishes and clean the water. In this case, you do not have to feed the fishes, or clean the water. BIG improvement, small people!

Plus, this screen saver is also a real POWER SAVER. How? It will save you the electricity from the aquarium light and pump that you are not using. Good news, right? Of course!

That is not all, small people. Because it also has NICE MUSIC, it will save you all the time it would take to go out and learn to play an instrument yourself. So you are saving the price of the instrument AND the time it would take to learn it. Even better, small people!

By now, you are thinking "I must have this incredible screen saver." Of course you are! Just be glad I am here to show you all the little points you may not have thought about. You must THINK BIG, small people.

So immediately get this screen saver, small people, and put on your happy faces!

Your friend,

Mr. Wise Owl

I see the Great Screensaver War continues unabated.

You know, it's not like I hate screensavers. I bought After Dark way back in the DOS days, and have bought one or two since. Very few are worth paying for, particularly given what you can get for free.

But jeez - this thing sucks even for free. It's like Ken's Labyrinth compared to Wolf3D. It works well enough, but who cares? It's almost as bad as the Titanic one.

If you just LOVED the Titanic screensaver and wondered why all those idiots in the forum dissed it, you'll love this screensaver and should download several copies so you'll have a spare in case you lose one. If you HATED the Titanic screensaver and thought it was the biggest waste of perfectly good memory since . . . well, since After Dark, don't waste your time on this one.

Bad as it is, though, it doesn't take the coveted "Worst Screensaver in History" award. That goes to SETI. I still have a 17" monitor with SETI's "screensaver" burned into it, which probably explains why they've so far been unsucessful at locating extraterrestrial intelligence. If YOU were an intelligent being from another planet, wouldn't you hide from people too stupid to write a proper screensaver?

I like it, it's ok. Not extreme wow factor, I mean, it's not like I filled the computer with a tropical reef, but as a user of Activeworlds it's very familiar. Has the same renderware looking interface and it's rather like my computer dropped into one of the worlds in Activeworlds.com to swim with the fishes. I turned off the cheesy music though. It'd be nice if it had the option of grabbing from your own music collection and playing randomly from the mp3 folder but that's asking a lot so "off" works fine.

You cry babies are totally amazing, and I am dead serious. For God sake people, this is the first they have put out a screen saver for download in two weeks or more. Give it a friggin' rest already !! Ya know, some of us look forward to the screen savers now & then. Myself included. This site gives away free stuff daily and you have the gal to b!tch because of a screen saver ? GET AH LIFE !! Go away, no one wants yous here anyways.
The concept is so easy, even you crybabies should be able to grasp this. If yous don't like whats offered here today, LEAVE !!! simple !! come back tomorrow ! maybe you will or will not like that offer either. If you don't, just leave. It's simple.
If you like the offer they give, leave a friendly comment. But, if you really feel the need to leave a comment on something you don't like, heres an idea for ya, how about a nice thank you to GAOTD and say, thanks, but not today.

Thanks for all you do for us GAOTD and for also putting up with the ungreatfuls that do nothing but b!itch & complain when they can't have there way.
I love screen savers and wish every weekend was nothing but screen savers for a give away.
Also a big thank you to the people that lets us have this screen saver (The developer) of the software.

This screensaver is not as good as the ones I downloaded here before. The graphics quality is very poor. The fish's movements are not realistic and the plants don't look real. I purchased for a few dollars an aquarium screensaver that's super-realistic looking from a company called Prolific Publishing ( http://www.prolific.com ).

This comment is not a complaint; since this software is free, I do appreciate it. But you wanted comments, so here is my opinion :)

This download actually saved my life. I left my bedroom to download it on my laptop. While downloading, a meteor crashed through the roof right into my bedroom. The meteor started emitting toxic gas. My laptop observed this and used its powers to destroy every single atom of the toxic gas.

I guess this download saved human life as we know it.

Thanks again GOTD.
