While the program is great overall, I find it does not like non-European characters in the names (I have only tried with Japanese - this might also apply to characters unique to non-English languages as well [eg accented characters]).

I tried downloading a Japanese video from Youtube. Although the name showed correctly in the "name" field, the filename of the captured file was mojibaked - the Japanese characters of that name were all replaced by underscores.

Suggestions to authors:

    -- If a system supports unicode characters, please give the option of leaving those multiple-byte characters alone if possible. While display/input of East-Asian languages is not installed by default (it adds several MB to the installation), XP and beyond do support unicode in filenames. (Only exceptions are slashes, colons etc) The long-filename API calls are already unicode-friendly.

    -- Please add, as an option, appending the "posted by" data to the filename. (If videos had the same title, this version just happily overwrote the others without warning)

    -- Please add a way to manually override the filename to save the file to.

@146, primerib...

i'm glad you got it working... :)

i posted last night & it wasn't allowed thru, sorry...

if your player doesn't support .avi files, then yes, you'll have to convert them to .flv...

you can either start from scratch downloading/converting with VideoGet, or use another converter if you have one installed.........i didn't see an option to use VideoGet as just a converter, but i may be wrong...

good luck, primerib!

@144, Violet4714,

It worked! Thanks so much! My only remaining question is:

Can I transfer all my "black" .avi files to .flv files, or do I have to start all over from scratch?

Just as an FYI, converting .flv files to .avi format only increases the file size on your hard drive up to 3x the original size, and it will not improve the quality at all... the quality can only be as good as the original .flv file. For that reason I prefer to keep the .flv format if it's a file I want to keep.

Instead of converting the files to bloat them, there's a great program that's small and free, FLV Player, that I've used for years and just reinstall when there's an upgrade. You can download it at http://www.download.com/FLV-Player/3000-2139_4-10467081.html .

@142, primerib...
you're welcome...
please check the Output format dropdown box for the type of player you have, and select it...
when you select the format, the Video Encoder should auto-adjust to the correct one for the selected Output...
hope that helps...
if not, the forum folk are the way to go...lots of knowledge there...

@139 - Violet4714, thanks for your reply. Output format says "DivX Movie (*.avi)" and the Video Encoder says "DivX Codec".

Are those the correct settings?

@126, rrodken...

read thru the VideoGet Help>Options>Auto-updater section for the update description (partial below)...

"On this tab you can define the periodicity of update program script checking. This is not the program update. The application script contains information about supported websites settings"
