Every piece of software on here has a freeware alternative and is sometimes better. I prefer TrueCrypt, thanks GAOTD but no thanks.

Microsoft Private Folder (which is now discontinued and can no longer be downloaded) can't touch TrueCrypt. Anyone with even a modicum of computer knowledge can easily see and manipulate the files/folders inside MSPF.

MSPF is better suited to store some n00bs pr0n collection and if anyone discovered it, it doesn't really matter anyway. TrueCrypt is a superior strength open source encryption program for those of us who actually have something worth hiding.

Thanks GAOTD, but I'll be passing on Uconomix. With a much superior free program like TrueCrypt around, it's just not necessary. Especially when any similar closed source software, such as Uconomix, could easily have a backdoor in it and you could never really tell.

I turned my firewall off and I am still unable to activate the software. This is probably the 4th or 5th piece of software that I have attempted to activate from GGAOTD and GAOTD. I see no need in coming here if I cannot activate the programs. Am I the only one with this problem?

Sorry Uconomix Technologies as you can see by the other members response, your program is lacking in several areas and other programs have been listed that produce better results than yours.

Thanks GAOTD for trying to bring a variety of software.

Big thumbs down!!

@44 Glad you mentioned http://www.hotpixel.net/software.html
Blowfish Advanced CS works great on computers without administrative rights (unlike TrueCrypt) and is easy to use (you MUST read the manual when using truecrypt). Also, if you just want to send some files via email or encrypt a folder or two, TrueCrypt is really over-kill, and Blowfish Advanced CS makes it easier.

#53: That is what they tell you (The child pornography part), but in the mean time we're loosing more and more of our privacy to these so called investigators. I'd challenge their demand for my encryption keys for any court, and uhm... really private email is encrypted here, unencrypted mail is plain text, and anyone can intercept and read that (BTW: including your passwords usually.) And that is where encryption programs are for; if you want to shield folders from prying eyes, you better shield your entire hard disk, there might be traces of temporary files outside the encrypted folders that would give the contents away...

@51: Richard, and where please would you keep those? In a bank vault... they would give them the keys without even hesitating if a proper suppoena is delivered to their doorstep; so where then? At home? That would make the whole encryption process superfluous, since they would find the unencrypted backup while searching your home for evidence. Security and privacy aren't that easy, unfortunately!

The ACTUAL site for www.truecrypt.com is of course www.truecrypt.org and deniablity of a hidden volume is useful in some European countries where it is an offence to not supply the legal authorities with your password when asked - (it is to stop child pornography so it is understandable).

(Been following GOTD for some time, but this is my first comment ...)

I second the comment by #8 above. I have been using TrueCrypt for some time. It is a very slick, elegant solution to encrypting your files. It works perfectly -- never a single problem with it. And it's always free.

Nice software.

I suggest before installation of this software create a backup of the HDD, and keeping regular backups of the HDD while using any drive/file encryption software. One of the best ways to encrypt your data is to KEEP All data except Windows OS on a seperate external drive.

I'd never use an encryption product that says the encryption is performed by "Strong 512 bit advanced encryption (SHA-512)". SHA-512 is just a hash algorithm and can't be used to encrypt files. They should say what type of encryption is used (symmetric, asymmetric) and what ENCRYPTION algorithms or protocols are used (RSA, 3DES, AES, etc).

TrueCrypt is no panacea. You setup a hidden partition (the program author calls it a virtual partition. Nothing about the program is virtual. RAM is used as a transfer medium just like it is in evey other program). RAM is not used as a virtual medium at all.

Files and folders written to the hidden partition are encrypted. None of your old stuff can be encrypted unless it is moved over to the hidden partition. Compressed files, further operated upon or not (encrypted)have been around since before MS-DOS 5.0. And, there just as many problems with this type of filing program now as before

Nothing new with the Uconomix encryption engine being offered here or with TrueCrypt. Both slow down your operations. Both make it more difficult to find files and folders because they are not indexed with desktop search programs. Corrupted files are lost forever.

The only reason that I would leave the Uconomix encryption engine installed on my hard drive would be to leave it running and see how long it would take to start losing data.

hi,

does anyone know how to use truecrypt in its quicker, lower security mode? i tried to make a 200 MB vault to put on my flash drive, but the encryption engine ran for several days without completing the project so i killed it.
i understand that truecrypt allows for the creation of less secure vaults that presumably would require less processor time to generate, but i cannot find any directions for this in the manual.

thanks,

john

Kruptos 2 is way better and it is also free. It allows you to make self extracting files, it has shell integration for easy use (just right click a file). It even has a built in file shredder that uses the DoD 5220-22.M algorithm (also available by right click). And like I said before, it's free http://www.kruptos2.co.uk/

I agree with some others -- TrueCrypt FREE, and is much more powerful and is able to encrypt any folder or entire volumes. It also allows you to create "dummy" encrypted folders, giving you plausible deniability if you were physically forced to unencrypt a folder -- the attacker would have no idea that the folder you are unencrypting is a dummy file.

I'd at least check it out.

One problem with PGP, for international users you need a version called pgpi as the US will not allow 'foreigners' to have access to what they call "munitions". Now pgpi is quite good but has 2 fundamental problems, firstly it needs to be installed (and for people who use work computers may find the system locked down so that unless they are an adminstrator no programs can be installed) and secondly it can be complicated for a beginner to use. The major problem with free pgp is that, unless it is an early version it might have a "backdoor" built into it so that the security services can access any encrypted files (that warning came from the originator of PGP not me).
Re #4. If you are using these programs in a work environment but for personal use, other people can always have access to your PC.

Good morning all, thanks to GOTD and Uconomix Technologies for today's freebie. I use, as others do, AxDecrypt available from http://www.axantum.com/

AxDecrypt performs exceptionally well. One of the best features that I like is the ability to create [or use an existing] folder, right click and encrypt it and then afterwards anyfile dropped / saved in to it is encrypted. Sending an encrypted file to someone else is a breeze and you are able to save your [any] unlock key / passphrase as a separate file - Outstanding stuff and all for free.

Today's freebie comes nowhere near [sorry to say].

Hmmm. I don't see any mention of certificates on the product website, so is this simply a SHA-512 encoder? If so, it's really only useful for protecting your own files (since if you ever sent them to anyone you would also have to send the passord somehow); and if that's the case there is stronger (and free) private symmetric encryption software out there (I'm a Blowfish man myself, but then I've also got a few grey hairs). For those who want to encrypt e-mails, Thawte provide Web-of-trust client certficates for free.

Ok, the following are points to ponder. I have honestly
never heard of this program before and I'm not quite
sure that a lot of others have, either. However, I
don't think that obscure software necessarily means
that they are not useful or effective, But,
that being said, this is what I gleaned from
2 Web sites, Those sites being download.com &
snapfiles.com:

Web site 1 (download.com)

• Why does Uconomix Encryption Engine have only 72
downloads at download.com since October 24, 2006?

http://www.download.com/Uconomix-Encryption-Engine/3000-2092_4-10592888.html?tag=lst-0-1

Web site 2 (snapfiles.com)

• It was rated only 2 1/2 out of 5 stars ("fair").

• "Pros: Uses 512-bit encryption"

• Cons: Cannot create self-decrypting files; user
cannot specify output file name and folder; no
password management. For more, click on link
below.

Very simple, works. Also adds Encrypt (and Decrypt, for encrypted files/folders) context menu entries. A serious flaw is that it overwrites existing files while decrypting, without prompting. If an instance of the program is running, the context menus don't work. Strictly does file/folder encryption--attributes aren't kept. Except for the overwrite problem, this is fine for people who want basic encryption without any algorithm options. As for the price, there's a ton of freeware that does this. Also, won't generate a self-decrypting file (i.e., won't embed the decryption part of the program with the encrypted file), therefor any recipients of encrypted files must have an installed copy of the program, in addition to knowing the password.
