#39, I would like to add the add ons to Firefox, but they have an extension Windows doesn't recognize. When I tried to find out how to use it, there wee too many sites, and I didn't know which one would be compatible with my Vista 64 bit. Can you help?

Thanks, Rose

My problem is...I can't find the darn thing! But after reading all your comments, I'm not so sure I want to. I checked Program Files where it should be, that's where I downloaded it. If I search for it, it will say it's there. Only the zip file, read-me file, setup and activate is there which I've setup, re-setup, activated and re-activated to no avail. Any idea what's going on with this? Help please and thanks.

BTW I totally agree with you Fubar, it was the same way in my day. Not that I'm old or anything :)

wow,.. this is something totaly different egh? I have been a computer guru since i was about 13 [i am 38 now]. I am the fastest typer [whie lookin at the keys in the world]. hehe,.. i tried this program and it is way cool, kinda confusing to get the language goin- but it defaults to english and standard keyboard [so lucky me]. It started out having me type some stuff while trying to beat the progress bar.
This program is very very small in size and very neat and useful. I finally get to learn how to type like a real nerd... thanks Giveaway!!!

#26 Sincerely doubt installing this giveaway did anything to your computer serious enough to cause a bluescreen. Whatever happened proably would have happened the next time you re-booted regardless of the reason. Sounds like your hard drive is dying - bluescreen errors are usually from hosed device drivers and/or failing hardware. Cracked motherboards, dying hard drive, etc. You have something else going on.

The language changes when the keyboard definition is changed in the OS, the programme then shows the correct key disposition for the language.

A fingering template would be a plus, at the beginning of the programme.

I too learned to touch-type on old mechanical machines - in the same style of character repetition as this programme. Typing characters + spaces + returns - not words - to a regular music beat, is the best way to assimilate keyboard layout, to be able to speed up and be accurate - which depends on character recognition, not word recognition. (I was known for my whizzy fingers, and about 1 typo in 20 pages.) This method enables subsequent touch-typing, at the same speed, of any language combination of characters, without necessarily changing keyboard. Changing from English to French keyboard, with about 10 key differences, took me only a day. This is a good way to learn. A keeper, it will help a friend.

I took a secretarial course back in the late 80's and never got the hang of keeping my fingers on the home keys, as a result I only got up to an average of 60 wpm (words per minute), but as a professional writer I have always wanted to get faster in my typing, and not just the hunt and peck stuff I have got good at. While I can type faster than most people I know, I do not keep my fingers where they belong.

I downloaded this program to see if it could be used to help me with improving that and so far, for what it is, I like it.

You set the speed you want to type at (I picked 90 wpm), then there is a red bar that will scroll past under the letters to be typed to show you how fast you should be at the selected speed.

The program does god at giving how many errors you made, what the WPM you got was, and has a statistics graph I have not checked out much.

My complaints:

Nothing for new typists to tell them how a person should type. I took a secretarial class before, so I know where to place the fingers and what fingers go to what keys for above and below where the "home keys" are, but new users could benefit from that kind of information.

Also, I can not find any way to delete users. The thing comes with 6 preinstalled users (???, ?????, Alice, Bjorn, Jerome, Te?d????) and you can make new users, but there is no way I can find to delete the 6 preinstalled ones. Who I assume were the beta testers before it was released.

The help menu is hidden as a "?" box in the "about" area, and not very helpful other than in what the things you figure out before you find it do.

You can change user settings so that you can change typing speed and rather to use capitol letters or not, but you can't delete the user.

The on screen prompt keyboard really does not help, since I look at the letters I need to type rather than the keyboard, but a feature added that would let you replay that, so you can see the keypresses on the onscreen board in real time would be interesting and informative.

All in all, I give it a thumbs up but I would really like to see more helpful stuff for new typists and a few tricks (like replay keystrokes) that could help us old timers.

Thanks to GAOTD and TypeO'Key for a great giveaway, it's a wonderful tool for anyone like me that makes their living based on how fast and accurately they can type. I look forward to seeing future versions of this program.

This software will not, at least in my case, use country specific characters like æ ø and å, instead it wants me to type the Swedish ones ä ö and å. We got out of the Swedish/Norwegian union in 1905 and have no desire to re-enlist :D

@ Fubar...It would seem we had the same training and suffer from the same deterioration of practical skill. Your comments caused my shoulders to ache in memory of a certain instructor's posture requirements and Nazi-like training practices...but damn, I could type 70 wpm in, in the 9th grade!

I had a quick peek at this offering and had no problems with installation. It has a very small footprint and functions as described. Unfortunately it doesn't add up to something I have the patience for. The app has no advice on technique and is not in the least bit intuitive. It's not your typical tutor-style program...rather, it is a set of instructions on how to type "special" characters...quickly.

What I need is a good "four-fingered" typing tutor!

Installed, registered ok. No help file as stated, can't find where to change to another language, website is useless. I agree with some other folks who mentioned Mavis Beacon as a much better learner's program. My son learned with that and he types quite quickly with 99% accuracy, so well worth the investment! I was hoping this would be a program that would help me to write in different languages without having to remember all those darned "alt" codes, but no. Thanks anyway, GAOTD, but this one is being deleted.

I would have to say that this is very pointless, (also it only does random characters not words) if you want to learn typing, get a friend, both of you get some sort of instant messenger and get on a lot and talk. I learned how to type through IMing and now I can type 83 words per minute.

i uninstalled this program. I don't like the graphics, and understanding the program seems cumbersome. where is the multilingual on the toolbar? i thought this might incorporate a translator and a manner to print letters in different languages for your keyboard. I expect more when someone says multilingual. for English, not needed, i type 60 w0rds a minute with 4 fingers, 2 per hand and beat some of the most experienced secretaries. for me metalanguages is what drew me to this program and in that area found it lacking.

Well I tried it and found it verry usefull I was wondering how you get the different keyboards then I fould out you just have to change your keyboard layout in Windows to have the other keyboards, Granted I dont know what they are or how to use them but I did manage to type in Hebrew keyboard, by just changing it in the windows settings in layout.

so if you d/l this and you have your keyboard already setup in your language then it will teach you in your language how to type.
2 thumbs up

Like #17 I learned to type on manual typewriters. While I have no need for this program, I can see it has potential.

After all it is still version 1 and still in development. The developers (on their site) are looking for feedback on how to improve it and I'm hoping they pay attention to the comments here for more ideas on where it can be improved.

When I saw what the day’s GAOTD was I thought it wouldn’t hurt to have a type tutor program. I’m more of an eight or nine finger typer than a ten so there’s some room for improvement. I’ve also begun learning how to read and write a second language. I needed specifics on switching keyboard languages but the multinational Help icon on the taskbar (blue button with a question mark) only brings up the “About”. It’s comforting to see that “Licensed To” conformation but I’ve been with GAOTD long enough now to take that sort of thing for granted.

So now the quest for Help begins; I go to the start menu folder as its common to find things like Help Documentation, Readme’s, and Uninstall executables. The only thing in the SMF was the main executable, so I right-click, properties, find target, to check the contents of the program folder. Low and behold, there’s the HTML Help file, and after reading thru it, the only information on that topic was that the program had multilingual capability. Use of this program is basically an exercise in trial and error, which is an exercise I can do without.

Both of my computers have three languages installed and this knows them or at least finds them and I also have two different keyboards and it knows that as well so there is something useful about this pjrogram. Take some time and learn because it is not quite arranged as some of you might like it. English speakers be sure to understand that many things we say are reversed in other languages.

I do think this can be of use to many of you out there.

I wouldn't call this a typing tutor. It doesn't give any information anywhere about proper typing technique. Even getting to the Help file is strange. The Help symbol only brings up the About box, where you have to click the About box's "?" symbol to get Help; F1 doesn't work. Its keyboard layout doesn't match mine, which probably doesn't matter too much. Its speed selection is in the non-standard characters per minute, instead of the standard words per minute (there's a standard definition for that). This is strictly a character-based trainer. While that's good for training in unusual character combinations, it's bad for speed-typing training in your language, where real words are far better for learning finger coordination and training your brain (word training teaches you to type words without thinking, rather than concentrating on individual characters). As for installation and use, it keeps its statistics in the System32 folder, which is a major no-no (unless you do something stupid, Vista will virtualize the files). I'm glad I grew up in the days of manual typewriters, where as a child I learned typing from an actual course made by the typewriter manufacturer (course book and audio records, as I recall), and in summer school between middle school and high school, I took a typing course from an actual instructor, where you had to type as rapidly as possible, but if you made more than something like one error per five minutes, you received a zero on that test (there were correcting typewriters, but on most typewriters, you couldn't backspace like you can on a PC, so you learned to type without errors). Real typing training involves not only proper hand placement on the keyboard and the proper finger to use with each key, but wrist and arm position; arm, wrist, hand, and finger control; seating, posture, keyboard placement and adjustment, etc. Of course, PC's have ruined whatever typing skills I had. One other thing, if you have full-time spelling correction (such as tinySpell), turn it off while training (it was beeping without visual notification).

XP Pro SP3: Installed and activated properly, no bugs with the registration.
Puts a start menu folder in programs without telling you.

How program works:

- You create a new user profile and choose you speed per minute (characters per minute, normal is around 200 I guess, default is 90).
- You start taking level based tests, based on the touch typing system.
- Keyboard layout is loaded from your system, no problems with my norwegian layout, special characters like æ,ø,å are auto-detected.

Fun little program all in all, and ultra small! Just a 650Kb download. A keeper for me, great when I have some time to spend.

Ard.

The introductory blurb tells us that the software selects the different languages from whatever languages you have asked Windows to support. So for example, I'm interested in Hebrew and English and Thai, so I have them all available so that I can read emails in those languages, and even type in those languages.
But I'm curious. I already have a way to switch between the languages using Alt-Shift, so what will this program give me that I don't already have provided free from Microsoft??

Cassie, this is what I got from the help screen. "Type O'Key supports multiple languages and keyboard layouts: they are taken directly from your operating system. So, they will be just same as you see them on your computer." So I'm guessing if your computer is set up as English then that is all you will get. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Not bad for free (I guess), but when I first started the program I saw the names of Alice, Bjorn, Jerome and Ted,which I thought was odd. I also thought it was odd after the first typing test there was nothing on the screen to tell me to proceed or how to proceed. I guess your supposed to know to hit the enter key. The program doesn't seem to intuitive in the sense it works on your problem keys like Mavis Beacon does. Also I'm not seeing any games or anything else that would make the program fun to use.

You can try a free online typing test free at: http://www.teststeststests.com/typingtest/ If you want to print out your certificate you have to pay.

The latest version of Mavis Beacon reports its not for Vista users, but can be downloaded at http://www.broderbund.com/store/broder/en_US/DisplayCategoryProductListPage/parentCategoryID.13529600/categoryID.13531200. This is version 17. Version 20 is for Vista users but I can't seem to find a trial version of this.

Downloaded and installed on XP Pro SP3 easily and with no fuss. This is not the most aesthetically good looking interface I have ever seen, but hey, it's a typing tutor, and as I am probably one of the worst typists in the world, despite years of typing on computer keyboards, it will do nicely for me! I will give this a big 'thumbs up' if only because I don't have an excuse now not to learn to 'touch type' when I have a few hours to spare (?).
