If it is Digital Rights Management, then how can the protection be removed "legally"?
Of course we all hate DRM. We do wish to remove DRM if we can.
But to claim that you remove it "legally" with this software, is unusual.

Since when did any software confer "legality" to the actions of its (the software's) owner/users?

Re MAC. This software will only run on O/S higher than 10.8 so for me who only has a meagre Macbook and 10.6 it is a no goer. Why do we have to buy the latest kit to use any of this stuff? Do we buy new cars every time they paint new white lines on the road. The writers should consider users who bought last years PCs. I for one am drifting away from GOTD if that's how it is going to be.

I installed the software, found that the converted files were badly compressed, totally unusable and the audio, well, that was a complete joke. Sorry but not a good piece of software.

Does nobody actually "READ" the comments posted? Karl said, "Uninstall everything you have not used in the last 12 months, [because you obviously do not need it]. He did not say 'Uninstall everything".

As far as Windows 10 is concerned, what does it have to do with today's "Give Away"? I understood comments posted here were supposed to relate solely to the giveaway of the day?

Everyone here today is commenting on Windows 10 and not the TuneCafe giveaway.
I suppose it is not for everyone and there may be better products out there.
I've not seen anyone with a Mac comment if it works on Apple hardware.
(There is an Apple version.)

Hackers have made this a scary world, and here we get all manner of foreign software.
But we also have aliens visit here commenting on the software imported from abroad.
We don't know who to trust anymore. Products given here are likely to be safer than name-brand high-price domestic material whose source code and customers have been ordered to be given to some agency bent on tracking us all. Case in point:

Many of you here are now running Windows 10.
What do you think of the windows 10 feature called "WiFi Sense" ?

It is a great timesaver! No more need to type long passwords. It automatically shares your WiFi passwords with anyone in your contact lists. (Skype, Outlook, Facebook) automatically get access to your WiFi when they visit.
...As well as anyone on their contact lists!

The controls for WiFi Sense are found by: going to Settings, select "Network & Internet" and then click on "Wi-Fi." Select "Manage Wi-Fi Settings," scroll to the Wi-Fi Sense section.
Alternatively, You can opt out by adding "_optout" to your WiFi router's SSID. Example: old SSID was "Karl", secure SSID will be "Karl_optout".
Microsoft and Facebook really want you to have a lot of happy friends!

Foreign software? Aliens? Software from abroad? You do know that the internet is a global thing right? not a US only place? there is no "foreign" on the net. The fact that there is a US flag on this page is only to show which language is used

Installed under Windows 10 64 on an I5 system with 16G RAM. I wanted to convert some VOB files off a CD I had. First file was 2:28 long. Output into MP4 was 5 seconds only. What? Where did the rest go?
Other conversions from VOB to MP4 are truncated similarly. Is this a broken format or was I asking more out of this than it was prepared to give?

DRM is just one reason that I hate proprietary compressed audio. I just buy the CD and rip to FLAC. I've also bought from HDtracks.com. Full resolution and no DRM issues. Drive space is so cheap these days and life is short.

This is a general Give Away of the day comment. I've tried to install several of the recent offers on my Win XP SP3 system. Each time the download completed. I unpack the zip file, I run the setup, and I get a message saying setup can't connect and to try again later. If I retry running the setup file, my system gives me the blue screen of death.

Is GAOTD no longer supporting Win XP?

I did install the program in WinXP.
All the conversions are made under WinXP
I think, that because of the absent of proper codec's the results are not that good.
Just the 1:1 conversions were OK

Windows 10 home 64-bit, iTunes 12.2.1.16.

When trying to convert an M4V file, iTunes opens and immediately crashes, followed by a crash in tunechef. This seems to be pretty much what happened the last time I tried to use a version of TuneChef to convert a DRM protected file on a Windows 8.1 system. There is nothing wrong with the film itself, as I can happily play it on the desktop computer through iTunes. Most disappointing.

Could not remove DRM from any music in iTunes. Just does not work. Completely useless!!! Windows 8.1 / Intel CPU

I thought not... It's not easy to remove DRM, and I doubt any software can. I tried once with Audible DRM remover and it didn't work and like today's giveaway is no different.

Installed and registered without problems on a Win 10 Pro system. A clean install.

A company without name and address.

System requirements on their homepage:

System Requirements
★ Windows 8/7/Vista/XP (32-bit/64-bit)
★ Core 2 Quad and above
★ 1 GB of RAM (Recommended 2 GB of RAM)
★ iTunes 10.x and above

iTunes is not needed for installation and running this program. It is a most simple converter which needs iTunes only for (not tested) DRM removals. It works with the latest codecs, in the options you should disable the update check, no options found to change language.

A simple converter, does in my short test (of course the FFmpeg library does it), what it claims, did not test the DRM related tasks.

Uninstalled via reboot.
Have a nice weekend

Some users wanted to know my opinion about Win10. There are so many good articles, that I cannot add anything new.
My simple opinion: upgrade! It works faster, you'll see it, it is the system, which Win8 should have been, you can keep parallel Win7 or Win8 and it has the small problems of all new OS, so no hurry needed. And my advice. Use the upgrade to get a clean new system. Uninstall everything before, which you did not start at least once in the last 12 month... you will not need it in the next 12 month.

I'll give this a miss. I have plenty of video converters. I don't have any M4V files which need DRM protection removed and I wouldn't want to install iTunes anyway.
As I read your comment on one screen I am watching a TV recording with Windows Media Center on the other screen. I watch almost all of my TV using WMC and a quad TV tuner card. I think I'll hold off the Win10 upgrade for now. But if you don't use WMC as your PVR then most opinions I've seen online agree with you, although a couple suggest waiting a bit until any initial teething problems are sorted out.

Hi Karl,

Do I have to uninstall all programmes like photoshop and reinstall after upgrading to windows 10. I have one year option for upgrade. I did not understand your statement - uninstall everything before - . One more query - I have lot of portable programme loaded in the system. Is it better to shift them to flash drive and operate by plugging it.

I like Win 10 but after installing and fumbling around with it my first thought was that it is Windows 7 with a new GUI and not a new OS and the new GUI seems very unfinished and unpolished in big areas while many Win 7 things remain which makes it feel incomplete and diverse.

Comment by D P Rangan

You do not have to uninstall anything. What Karl suggests is that if you have not used a program in the past year, strongly consider uninstalling that program before upgrading. After uninstalling unused programs - and backing up all your data - then do the Win10 upgrade. This well result in a cleaner system. You should also take this time (before upgrading) to make sure that you have all the installation keys and media to reinstall any important programs before upgrading.

If it ain't broke. . . don't fix it.

Windows 10 is Microsoft's fix for the disaster that was Balmer's Windows 8, a disaster Microsoft strenuously denied at the time but has since sought to put so much distance between it and Windows 8 that there isn't even a Windows 9. Anyone who believes anything that Microsoft says wants his/her head examining, so believing Microsoft's hype about Windows 10 is absolutely Not A Good Idea. This is a new OS and as ever with Microsoft, it wants the world to be its unpaid beta tester. . . possibly for the next 2 years while it fixes this release with Service Packs, the way it has done with just about every other OS in its history.

If you're fortunate enough to be on Windows 7, then changing to Windows 10 makes no sense *at this time*. If you're on Windows 8, well: things could hardly get any worse so 10 might just be an improvement. Possibly. Maybe.

Reply   |   Comment by MikeR  –  8 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+34)

@D P Rangan

no need to uninstall anything. Win 10 takes over nearly all programs automatically. Some exceptions like virus scanner without actual working key. Some firewall should be reinstalled. I meant the uninstall to take the chance to really clean up a messed system. The start menu of Win10 has anyhow problems with more than 512 installed tasks - not yet solved up to now. You should take some time for the installation...
Greetings from Germany
Karl

Aaa, Win 10, another start slim and then will get bloated with updates and security breaches and patches and who knows what else.
I installed mine on the 29th and already win 10 was updated 3 times and new features loaded without asking for it.
It is pushing some software for sale, it is pushing local news, it is pushing shopping and all without me asking or approval.
Now it is asking me to enter different key, saying to activate or my computer will stop functioning in 3 days.
I ran an IP trace in in and out on my connection line and you would not believe how much data was sent out and how much data was received, almost 2GB in 3 days and all without knowing or any way to stop it, in other words, your computer now belongs to them and is no linger yours.

Thinking of uninstalling it and going back to my previous OS.

There is no way to stop the constant communication and data exchanges between your computer and their servers and the worst part is, they already know all about you by intercepting and monitoring your IP.

To me, looks like a spyware gone uncontrolled.

Well, almost every Microsoft OS was fast in the beginning, it is the patches and (security) updates that often make it so much slower after some time...

@Maria Here's an article I read about a reason (at least one reason) why data is going out, and the article also gives a fix. I can't vouch for the accuracy because I've yet to install this new OS. I have 8.1 and I'm okay with it so far. I don't have too many issues with it. I do miss XP though as I had it set up to work efficiently for me. http://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2015/07/30/windows-10-steals-your-bandwidth-to-send-other-people-updates/
