I found this software is extremely helpful for my purposes, esp. when stripping out underscore,#... also renaming/rearrange file names in bulk eg. artist-title (don't have to do twice like in mp3tag) but
the "custom" genre is not as intuiative and good as mp3tag (may be
I haven't figured out yet?

#29. I don't 'need' the artwork. I want it. I had album art on my LPs, cassettes and CDs. I want it with my digital collection.

As for the software on offer today, like many others here I've found Media Monkey more than up to the task. It can retag single songs or entire albums. I don't need more software to do the job that my media player can already do. So I'll pass.

My impression: Tagjet is OK, just as good as Mp3tag and Tagscan.
I'll keep on using Mp3tag because Mp3tag lets you choose whether or not to change the FILE DATE of the file you work with.
( My preference: like RENAMING doesn't change the file date so re-TAG-ging shouldn't. Did my best to find this option in Tagjet, doesn't seem to be there. I'd say Mp3tag and Tagscan are at least more versatile qua user's preferences. )

Activate == GAOTD date checker & presets the registration data
Setup == TagJet 2.1 installer.exe

XP SP3
v2.1

clean install, 3 MB into directory of your choice
sets up some sort of "cache" files in %APPDATA%

CHM Help file

takes a LONG time to open?
(18 seconds or so)

only handles MP3 files, so no OGG or WMA or ...

resizeable window

lots of hotkeys

when you traverse a directory, you actually have to double-click
the directory name. (at first i was like, "why isn't it finding
any files?")

you can close the Folders & Processor windows
(gives you more space for the actual listings)

column headers are modifiable

column widths AUTOSIZE (hallahlueya!)
(wish more programs would do that, MS, cough cough)

file size displays as Mb
(wonder if an option for bytes would be nice?)

horror of horrors! Play, opens WMP, instead of the default or
some specified media player
(FAIL!)

multi-level undo
(don't know how many though?)

not sure if you can do something like take a group of files &
delete a particular tag field from each, like delete (clear)
all the Genre fields?

to get a good feel, would take much more time then i have at
the moment. bye.

#24 Edith: Congratulations on being such a young 93 and continuing to learn and grow.

This particular piece of software is for people who have a lot of digital music, downloaded usually (apple's music store, Amazon.com's music - a lot of it free, all varieties and genres - or from other sites or recording it off online radio or other sources or from CD. It helps organize and find the music files in the music "library" by giving them "tags" like genre, subgenre, etc., along with album, track and artist, and also providing lyrics for some. The music usually comes with this stuff (except lyrics), but people don't always like what's there, so they'd use this to add or change various parts of the file names and data.

Most of the software here appeals to some people some of the time, like this software today, or the video editing software that's good to know about but everybody might not use, but there is a lot of software given away that everybody can use (like the backup and recovery software or other utility programs).

I like the spreadsheet format. Allows very quick and easy changes to mp3 tags. Useful software and a time saver if many tags need to be updated. Better than any of the tagging systems built into players that I've tried.

$30bucks for this???

I've been using "MediaMonkey" (http://www.mediamonkey.com/) for all my re-tagging needs. Totally free and simple to use.

As for batch file renaming, I use "Bulk Rename Utility" (http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php) which is incredibly simple to use.

Anyway, today I decided to try the God Father that you suggested as an alternative to todays gotd offer but I kept getting an error every time i try to close the window. BTW, it would not allow me to close the window. The error says the following " Unable to write to C:\Program files (x86)the god father\tgf.ini." I am using W7 64 bit. Not sure why that is ...Can you help please...any suggestions. Thank you. It seem to be a good program though...

I still need to be explained "Why we need to have the Album Artwork to be able to listen to the song".
As subtext, someone is assuming we have */All of\* the songs from each album. When we might like only one or two.

I suspect also that having mp3tags identifies non-purchased music.

This is a decent piece of software. The fact that I can pull the album art and lyrics from the web with a couple simple clicks makes it a great GAOTD for me. I haven't figured out the bulk editing, but tagging my music is kinda low on my priority list right now. I'd say a nice program overall.

This program is able to retrieve a song and artist name using the FINGERPRINT of the audio file (that's not the same as freedb retrieval of albums names etc). It's almost unique and rather useful feature.

I use MP3TAG to edit tags and it works great for that. For filename manipulation I use Lupas Rename which is great for that. I'll take a look at this since it may combine both of these functions - it would be nice to have them in a single tool.

Does anyone know if there is something similar for FLAC files? I've been ripping more and more to that format since it is lossless. I'd love to have a tag reader/editor for that.

So,as long as it doesn't go out on the internet to find it's tags, then associates it with my computer inwhich that data is stored on said taggers servers, I'm in. Otherwise, I'll stay safe and put non-tagged songs in my "suprise" playlist.

Here's proof again that readers need to disregard the early GOATD posters and check out the actual software. TagJet goes far beyond what freebies deliver. It's definitely a keeper for me.
* Batch file retagging
* Batch file renaming (include inserting ascending numbers in filenames)
* Custom values for genre
* Strip out unnecessary tag info that confuses players

Audioshell did all this for me, reliably, but they have no 64-bit version. TagJet backfills this need on my new machine.

#14 and others, if you seriously want to get control over your music, audiobook, or live recording files, this is a great program.

I'm confused - are all these links in the posts supposed to be for visitors, or feedback to the authors for ideas on their software? I thought we were supposed to be feeding back to the authors, as payback for the FREE software. Since I do not have a clue to what "mp3 tags" are - and don't tell me, I don't care - I have no interest in this software, so I can't help the authors, but since when did Softonic salesmen start posting here?

Downloaded and installed OK, as per usual for GAOTD these days.

I have been a longtime fan of mp3-tag and Winamp in combination, so I figured I would give this program a try.

First impression: Not the most modern look I have seen in a program lately. (OK, mp3-tag is not that modern to look at, either, but still...)

Selected one of my music folders, and clicked "scan". No result. Went "deeper", and selected an artist folder. Clicked "scan". No result. Went deeper, and selected an album folder. NOW I found music...
Tried to sort the album by different columns. Had to right-click and select "sort by" instead of windows-standard of left-clicking on column-header. No big deal, but...

Tried to update tags on whole album. Seems to only be able to update one song at a time...
I may be doing something wrong. But so far, this program has NOT been intuitive enough for me to start using it right away. And it does NOT do what I want it to do. If I have to update my music-collection one song at a time... I'll NEVER finish.
This is also "just" an mp3-tagger, and does NOT support other filetypes like FLAC and APE.

Going back to my preferred pattern:
Winamp to play and tag music (with Gracenote),
http://www.winamp.com/
This gives me the opportunity to batch-update tags, but I still have the option to see what music Gracenote it has found before the file is actually UPDATED. (As opposed to some programs out there that just updates all tags because "you pressed "find tags"") ALL music-files supported for tag-update (Although you may have to download extra plugins to update some of them)

mp3-tag for putting cover-images IN the file (and not just in the same folder)
http://www.mp3tag.de/en/download.html
This program allso supports FLAC/APE etc.

A nice little plugin that gives Winamp a better playlist generator
http://www.jazzsequence.com/downloads/musicip

Musicip is also a great standalone playlist generator, if you for some reason are not as excited about winamp as I am
http://www.brothersoft.com/musicip-mixer-basic-87441.html
(This is version 1.81, I have heard about, but never seen a version 1.9)

It seems you can have any genre tag you want, as long as it's one of theirs and if you have a custom genre tag, it will ignore it. Kinda not helpful.

No judgement, just some more links...

Also, for CD recognition, my experience learns me nothing beats mediamonkey. Also includes MP3 tag edit possibilities, but for that I usually use MP3 Tag.

For file renaming, I use another tool which I cannot remember - I'll post that tomorrow. With these 3 tools I can do pretty much everything.

Still, for your convencience and to show off... A few links ; )

By far the best TagScanner program out there. I’ve used it for years with nothing but satisfaction. As a paying customer I don’t need today’s giveaway but wanted to encourage others to try it. You won’t be disappointed. Every now and then GAOTD has a real gem that you don’t expect to see offered here because the program is already well known and top of the line. Today’s giveaway is one of those gems. Do yourself (and your computer) a favor and get this.

And yes, I’ve tried all the other TagScanner out there over the years but for my money Your TagScanner is head and shoulders above the competition. Thanks, GAOTD. I was both shocked and pleased to see this offered here.

I agree with #5 - the star rating system for mp3 files really needs to become standardised.

I use MediaMonkey (MM) as my default, but I need to have Windows Media Player (WMP), as it is the only way my DAB radio will recognise files to stream - no WMP, no streaming. I have spent a lot of time completing tags for my MP3 collection, but the star system from MM is not compatible with WMP. It's just infuriating.

On a more positive note for the program author, MM Version 4 is now bloated and slow and I am looking for a replacement. I found TagJet 2.1 much faster to use to rename lots of files that were tagged with track numbers at the front and I even found a load of "(Disc 1)12/22" type tags that I hadn't noticed before. I also very much appreciated being able to quickly scan down the comments column, so I could delete a lot of rubbish stored there. So the program is definitely useful to me and may become more so as I learn how to use it - the help file is not good by the way.

No matter how you tag your MP3s, I feel it is worthwhile to look at tags in another tagging program - so I will be keeping TagJet 2.1. I have tried several of the free taggers, but all fall short in some way or another. If that's your experience too, it might we worth giving TagJet a try - it is free today after all, so you have nothing to lose but a little time! Would I pay more than £5-6 for this? Probably not right now, but maybe once I get more familiar with it, I might.

Re comment #2 so is todays giveaway (i.e. free). I've got to agree with comment #1 though, virtually every media player worth its salt will include most of the functions todays giveaway has, so almost $30 for something that's freely available on other days seems rather pointless.

I'd consider including this in a suite of tools that would include all of the audio tools you'd ever need such as converters, rippers, filters (to get rid of unwanted noise from music ripped from old vinyl discs) waveform analysers and editors, graphic equalizers and of course a media player.

When I saw the screenshot with the star ratings window I thought I would finally be able to erase and eliminate those unnecessary and pointless Windows Media Player rating stars from my MP3 collection. Sadly, it does not do that. All it does is add yet another needless, unnecessary ratings system that virtually nobody uses. That's too bad.

I am not sure that it is worthwhile to spend money on software to tag .mp3 files when there seem to be many free choices. I tried looking at a couple of files from the same cd one with art embedded and one without art. I searched for art on both. One result yielded several pictures none of which were related to the artist/cd. The second with no art produced two pictures of the correct artist but neither were the right cover. The software did a better job with lyrics.

I look forward to seeing whether anyone has a better experience. This doesn't meet my personal tagging requirements but it may be useful to others. I cannot justify the price. Gracenote can identify a single .mp3 file without having all the songs from the cd and the additional requirement that they be in correct order. It is generally accurate.
