@5 - Hard Water; Hi, I tried again using a new eMail, and from a different machine in the company. Still I got the same key, as my earlier two attempts. Perhaps it is related to IP itself, and not Machine ID.

@5 - Hard Water ; Hi, Hardwater, I got a different reg-code. It is not G— —- —- —- —B . !!!. I guess you may be right, the reg-code is specific to the IP address / or even particular Machine. Because, I too tried sending the mail through another ID, and got a different code.

@36 Yankee4Life - Thank you, I needed that!

@37 AugustusPoirot - Sorry! Most on 'here' expect you to go to the site (or elsewhere) to get FYI. Generally speaking - asking Q gets you negative marks (again, sorry). Here's the thing: you have programs and data (programs RELATIVELY easy to replace - data: not so much (easy - in fact, if you lose enuf u will cry...). So, you backup (save every so often) what you want (u decide) to several places (u decide). Some people will NOT backup to internet (u decide). Lots of programs do the backup (whole/part/incremental/etc) for you - for free or for a fee (U DECIDE).

@anybody else that cares (re email snafu): here's an email address just created for this posting: gotdexample gmail com
note to moderator guru: this is ONLY post i do with it!!! Tomorrow i will KILL this email account and that's that. (i, of course do have multiple accounts, like we all should, but this is just an example for the really paranoid. Really...) Hope no one minds if i submit this twice (it's so late and some may benefit from info imho)

Try this freeware:
http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html

They have the Pro and SE, both payware, which offers much much more capabilities including encryptation, burn to CD, etc, etc, which are too complicated and not so necessary for ordinary user. But their version of freeware is already more than enough for me.

Yes, Allwaysync is by far the best and easiest to use program of this type. I have used it for years. The free version will sync up to 50,000 Mp3's, and that is a lot of data. I purchased the full version since I have more than that. Thanks for today's offer, GOTD for todays offering, And all the other great software you provide.

For those of you who wonder why the program installs to the root of the drive you select, find the words "portable application" in the giveaway's description. That said, if you keep a copy of the original installed files, you can probably use the program on any of your portable devices.

@5: I checked the installer and there are 10002 valid passwords total. Yours is one of 37 (probably number 2). #40 got the same one I got, number 3. I requested a key just now and it gave me number 4 (Y ... 9). So from what I can tell, the keys are either given based on time, or each key is distributed a to only a certain amount of people. I don't think it impacts your installation which one is inserted, though.

Based on the comments (and the fact that I have three backup/netstorage/syncing things already, I'll pass. Also, free/junk email providers abound, GMail is free, Hotmail is free, Slopsbox is a nice thing for a temporary email address. These can all send.

As a software engineer, I have tried most sync programs out there. This is one of the easiest to use and reliable I have ever used. Very simple and well thought out GUI. I have never heard so many Paranoid people in my life about email addy's. OMG, that is why they have filters and spam setups or free emails!

I think the main problem is...most of you should step back from your computer and never go back to it! lol

I have 4 systems and had all my programs sync and mirrored within 25 minutes of installation. I use very few of the free programs, as I just hack what I need. But I must say this is one little program I might consider buying, if I could not crack it. lol
Thanks to GAOTD and Filestream...enjoy and quit whining!

No company should require an e-mail. I still receive annoying e-mails from multiple companies of whose software I downloaded here years ago.
Paragon is relentless with their mail as are others.
No thanks to any company that requires me to give them and e-mail. Not even a junk e-mail for them.

XP Pro SP3

It seems a handy program, but took me all afternoon (around 7 hours) working to synchronize just two folders.that without a tool, I have neglected to keep identical manually.

I must say I found it difficult to keep scrolling through the list to find "conflicts" and suggest you include a button to show conflicts only.

On trying to open a conflicting file on "right clicking" I got a box opening asking where I would like to move the file .... very frustrating. and I presume a bug? This happened everytime I tried it.

I feel being able to right click on conflicting or ignored files and choosing "Hide" would also be a good idea for future updates.

I also find that in the settings "Load at Start up" is greyed out and I am unable to use this feature. If I add a shortcut to my start up files, the program opens maximized and does not start a task automatically when my device (USB stick) is plugged in (As per "sync Options" - Auto) These problems coupled with the fact that the "update" button and "buy full license" buttons are untastefully hanging around, I am beginning to wonder if this giveaway is a crippled version ?

@ #37 AugustusPoirot

Today's offer is software is typically used by people who work on more than one computer.

For example: I'm a consultant for several businesses. Instead of carrying a laptop computer with me all day long, I carry a small thumb/flash drive and use the pc's at the companies I visit in order to report on what I've done, what I've got left to do and what I'm going to charge for my work. When I get home at the end of the day I have many documents in several folders that I need to copy to my home computer. Instead of having to manually copy each file to the right place on my home pc, this software would copy the files to the right places for me.

Unless you are working on more than one computer or are storing files on several different devices, I don't think you'll need this software.

By the way, I would deduce you are not a close relative of Hercule, n'est pas?

as noted, not all the registration codes are the same.

i used:

HTML Mail - Send HTML Emails Online
http://ctrlq.org/html-mail/

to /SEND/ for the registration request

using:

GuerrillaMail.com
http://www.guerrillamail.com/

to /RECEIVE/ the registration code

(you use the email obtained at GuerrillaMail as the From: email in ctrlq.com, then check for the reply from filestream.com in GuerrillaMail. now was that confusing?)

No problem registering and installing Sync TOGO. I like the GUI being very simple to follow. My only complaint is that it cannot recognize Unicode (Asian characters). I have some folders in Asian characters and when I tried to create a task to sync between English to Chinese folders, it keeps saying that the Chinese folder does not exist. So this software is not suitable for people with Unicode files and/or folders names.

XP SP3
v2.6

installs into directory of your choice, 6 MB
appears clean, though has some oddities. like creating date/time
stamped directories in %TMP% & using ZIP'd password protected files
for some of its Data files (as in I would like to know what's
within, but can't find out)

includes CHM help file
(their website is noticeably void of information)

the (default) black style is fail. too dark, too difficult to read.
(it can be changed, but took me a good 5 minutes to "discover" where)

even though it doesn't look like it, you CAN paste the (entire)
registration key into the dialog.

something odd during the install? after pasting registration, had
to ... go back, was it, in order to go forward? until i went back
i did not get the install directory choice? (i'll have to try to
see if i can repeat this?)

(appears i may have been too quick to give up on the dialog? after
a period of time, i was able to progress forward)

i am not a fan of ribbons

getting UI issues, bleed through from other windows, or ghosts left
behind

i do not know, cannot figure out if i am registered or not - correctly?
it should not be this difficult

deleting an item from the Check preview window, did not recalculate
the required disk space requirements

actual sync progressed well enough. would have liked an option to
maintain the target directory dates (to same as source)

i auto-hid the log window, & again a UI glitch, some of the static
text did no paint itself correctly

Check results filtering is a bit limited IMO

uses GNU's diff.exe for its comparison
Compare ONLY returns results if the files compare (saying, "Files
are identical"). if they are not the same, there is no action, no
notification. (the the diffs are noted in -diff-.*, which you
would not normally see)

no way to collapse-all on the tree in Check list

the ribbon takes a lot of screen realestate

program is useable. nothing spectacular.

there are endless numbers of sync, backup, types of programs out
there. many are free. so there has to be some overriding reason
to use this over some other, & i just don't see that.

different strokes for differnet folks. may work fine for some,
just doesn't do it for me. as it is, i'll stick with FreeFileSync
for my needs.

"FreeFileSync"
http://sourceforge.net/projects/freefilesync/

& let me reiterate, i do not know if i have this program registered - successfully?

Serial is different from user to user. You need to send an empty email to ppss@filestream.com. Serial was received immediately.

It MUST install to C:\ but then you can freely move the folder to USB or another computer / partition without re-registering. So despite comments stating otherwise, it truly is portable.

Still, Always Sync rules ;p

Peace!

I don't know why so many people are moaning about today's Giveaway. I'm not a computer genius by any stretch of the imagination &, to be totally honest, I have no idea what today's software can do nor why I need it!!
But, being a curious sort of bloke, I couldn't help myself & so I have just downloaded it & installed it. The whole thing was an easy & painless exercise. I use two e-mail address's in life & always use one for personal use & one for everything else. I really can't see what the big deal is here with this "system" of registration. What is wrong with using the "DELETE" button if/when something comes through that you don't like or looks of dubious nature?
Jeez, "Moan, Moan, Moan!!" That is all that some people like to do nowadays. They just moan for the bloody hell of it!! If you don't like something, then don't use it, SIMPLE.
This site has, in the couple of months that I've been using it, GIVEN FOR FREE some excellent software (TagJet, Audio Record Wizard & Tree Notes to name but three). However, if I see something that I know is not for me, I simply click away from the site & come back 24 hours later.
Right then, that is my personal moan outta the way.
Thankyou "Giveaway Of The Day" and thankyou ALL of you software people for giving us something for nothing. That is something that is so bloody rare today... SO PLEASE DON'T MOAN ABOUT IT!!!

By Default, the Application will install to any drive (Hard Drive or USB,) but it will only install in the folder "FileStream Sync TOGO," directly placed on the root. If you are like me, and like to have program files where they belong, in the Program Files Directory, this poses a problem.

If you are comfortable with the command prompt and changing and creating shortcuts (or a glutton for punishment,) then you can do this

I used a 'DOS' command to Associate (not map, different command) Drive T: to C:\Program Files
I then told it to install to T:\FileStream Sync TOGO (T: Being C:\Program Files)
This resulted in it being installed to C:\Program Files\FileStream Sync TOGO

Here is the procedure to do this.

During Install, when the screen with Destination gives you the choice of Drive, but path is pre-populated and unchangeable, open a command prompt and Associate a drive (I used T:) to the Programs directory on C: using the command shown next:
C:\>subst T: "C:\Program Files"
Then, go back to the install choices and click on the refresh button, to the right of the destination Location (Small box with two arrows.)
Now, when you click on the drop down list, T:\FileStream Sync TOGO is now available, so select it.

When the Installation is finished, continue below.

If you want to keep the Associated Drive Letter T: (or whatever you used,) then you need to do one more thing. When you reboot, it will more than likely be unassociated, so do one of the following:

Option A:
Go To (or click Start Menu-Run and enter) "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

Right click anywhere on the white background and select New -> Shortcut

In Window "Create Shortcut" under text "Type the location of the item" Enter subst T: "C:\Program Files" and click Next

Give it a name (any,) I used Assoc T to ProgFiles then Click Finish.

Option B:
Your other option, instead of associating a drive in the Startup Directory, you can go to the Desktop and update the shortcut by Right Clicking and Selecting Properties, Change the T:\ to C:\Program Files (T:\FileStream Sync TOGO to C:\Program Files\FileStream Sync TOGO)

That's it, piece of cake. If you're unsure, I suggest not doing it.

I keep hoping that someday I might really UNDERSTAND what the product does and what all of you are talking about when you actually talk about what the product does. Instead of email and registration "problems", I mean.

Would someone please write a comment describing what this does and why I need it IN LAYMAN'S TERMS. All of us are not computer gurus, but some of us are convinced that there is some good software offered here on GOTD. I just wish that someone would help me tell the good from the bad in terms I can understand. Then I could decide for myself if it is something for me.

I still use an external drive for backing up the OS and programs, but that isn't a daily issue. For me, once every couple of months suffice. For data, I started using the cloud, specifically Dropbox.com (2.5 gb free, you & your friends get more if they use your referral link). Then I ran into 4shared.com with 10 gb free (another 5 gb when they ask you to confirm you email address). Because both of these program sync to the cloud automatically, I decided to move the the Dropbox folder into the 4shared folder, so now my files are automatically synced to 2 cloud locations for double backup, no extra effort. For ease, set up 4shared first, get it configured, then set up dropbox, putting its folder inside the 4shared folder being synced.

Dropbox keeps older version of files, rather than deleting or over writing files that have been updated. Very handy when you frequently update files, and find you need an older version that you've overwritten.

Both Dropbox and 4shared allow sharing your files to your other computers and smartphones. I only use dropbox for that, and to avoid loading up your phone with full files, on the phone it only provides shortcuts to save space. If you need a file, it downloads it on demand, so you might have a wait for the download.

This replaced all my other file sync programs, and if everything in my house burned down, I'd still have my data backups.

I like SyncToy, too, and have used it for years. However, it will not sync files that are open. Some commercial packages use VSS to copy FROM an open file, although obviously they cannot copy TO an open file. Since I use SyncToy primarily as a simple way to back up files from my laptop to a server hard drive, I find SyncToy's lack of VSS support to be inconvenient. Also, setting up "sync pairs" in SyncToy is cumbersome if you have a lot of folders and sub-folders to include/exclude. Nonetheless, it is free, easily available, and reliable.

#5. If you want free software, you have to give a little info....fact of life! If you're so paranoid, why don't you have a 'junk' email address for this type of thing? As far as the same code for everyone? My code did NOT start with G and end with B, so everyone is NOT getting the same code. Maybe the "Gods" are reading your ip address and sending you the same code, no matter what email address you use. (OOOh more paranoia).
As far as the program goes, well, Ashraf (Dottech), who used to write such great reviews on here, says this is a good, worthwhile program, and on his recommendation, I am giving it a try.

re: @13 devnullius
in the free version of Allway Sync there is a file opreration limit of 40,000 files in any 30 day period. So if you have a large amount of files to synchronize on a daily basis you might need to look at a different choice. Also note that it does not support copying locked files.

Some here are trying to persuade us that it ain't an issue, nothing special with the email address. This is not true, it is an issue

If Filestream just wanted us to have SyncTOGO they could have given us the code in the readme-file (it is the same for everyone) and there was no need to register on a website and mailing up and down the lane to get that code.

This way you have to send mail and they can harvest the mailaddress.
It is a clever approach because when you just register at the website with a temporary mailaddress it will not suffice. Normally you only have to be able to collect a mail with the requested code and a temporary mailaddress would do, but in this case you have to use an emailaddress that is also capable of sending mail.

Like Rollo (#11) stated: "Therefore about 99% of the so called “trash-mail” addresses are useless" This will guarantee Filestream of a fruitful harvest containing no trashmailaddresses.

You obviously can see this is carefully planned and not merely a coincidence. It is clear now that Filestream is going for your mailaddress right?

But does it matter? To some it doesn't, but to others it does. It is just not possible to tell someomen else it doesn't matter. Everybody decides for him or her self.

So why does it bother to me? Either Filestream would propose me to trade SyncTOGO with my emailaddress (and I can opt out or in; I decide), all in the open or they give it away and don't try sneeky tricks behind my back using my peronal data for whatever they decide to do with it (When you don't see what they are doing it would be easy to lure you into giving away your emailaddress while trusting nothing is wrong; you wre mislead).

And yes, you can blacklist filestream-spam later, but that doesn't make it allright. That makes it only manageable, the harm has been don by than.

This is about trust. I don't want to be lured into things. I want to be clearly and honestly informed. It is not about whether I can deal with it or not, it is a matter of principle (you do have principle's right).

Now I hope for two simple things:

- I hope everybody is informed now, so you can decide for yourself. An honest choice, no obscurity. SyncTOGO seems to be quite a nice sync-tool. You might enjoy it on your terms.

- I hope Filestream will notice that not everybody likes this kind of registering/harvestiing and that there is something fishy about it to many people. Something that might be improved in the future when they are campaigning there software.
NB: Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposing harvesting mailaddresses, but everybody involved should be okay (informed consent) with it. Harvesting mailaddresses can be important for marketing purposes, but everybody should have the option to opt out (you cannot when you are lured into things) before they are pained with spam. No difference whether they can handle spam or not.
Think about that! I hope this is clear for once and for all.

"FileStream Sync TOGO is a portable application that offers you options of backup, sync, or mirror your files between your portable storage devices and computers, or between computers."

So for heaven's sake don't suggest idea to make it portable or leave comments to make it portable. Unless the comments were made by an unthinking robot.

To 'complainers' re: email addresses/spam/privacy issues
Your email addresses are worthless to anyone as long as you remember there is a DELETE option in EVERY email program -
poor widdle tired fingers, all dat clickin' make you tired? poo boy, such a disconvenience...
seriously, the Internet is free, emails are free, you decide what to click and what to fill in, for free; if you don't like it, don't DO it - that's also FREE.
Complaining is also free, but really useless and silly and immature. Stick to the software.
Based on other comments, I'm passing until GUI and other issues are better resolved; thanks GOTD for the opportunity.

I made the mistake of reading the comments here first , whilst installing , filled in the email details for registration and nothing arrived in the email.

So I quite out of instal and ran the instal gain and in the rapper instructions actually read what it says

"Just send an empty e-mail to ppss@filestream.com and the password for FileStream Sync TOGO will be sent to the e-mail provided."

Just send an empty email from any of your email accounts to ppss@filestream.com and you get the password back by return without filling in lots of info!

The prog instal gives you a browse button to install on any partition you want , albeit not a customised folder , but creates its own folder , so it is not true from an earlier comment that it only installs on drive C

Their website video tutorial should be remade without the annoying back ground music and the ladies voice that needs oiling. Not had a chance to try out the prog yet but having watched their video I would say this is well worth downloading and copying to a pendrive/usb stick to be able to sync between computers.

Same here!

I tried ALLWAYSYNC and then purchased the PRO Version.
It is very simple and reliable.
The synchronizations are entirely programmable.

It is simply a relief to have tool to synchronize multiple hard drives, jumpdrives, cloud drive, you name it...

The free version has a limit in the volume you can synchronize.
So you can download it and judge by yourself. Then if you have too much data, then it will ask you to purchasse a license which is fair.

After purchasing the license of Version 9, I have received free updates up to the current version (v12 I think).

Anyway, I saved much time and have peace in my mind since I have purchased this program and recommand it to anyone.

Cheers.

For those who don't want to give up their email, why not just create a Hotmail or Gmail account and use that for the GAOTD? That way you can take advantage of these great offers without giving up your privacy.

If you have Norton Internet security installed, the setup.exe of this GOTD will be sent to quarantine. you have to exclude it to install.
As always, the GOTD put a wrapper around the install file, and most of the anti-virus will treat it as dangerous stuff.
Look closely, you do not need to submit email for password. Go and check the internet explorer temporary folder (or the respective temp file of the web browser), you should see an cab file in the most recent modified folder, copy this file out and unpack it to a USB thumb, you can get the same stuff as what the installer create on C:\SyncTOGO. The installer uses the password to unpack and copy the stuff with the uninstall.dat, you can bypass the pw , just get & unpack the ic59EA.cab (cab name may differ).

Hi Folks

Comment by Alain @ No. 2 = "I thought it was free. It isn’t and the price is much too high, not in terms of money but in terms of privacy. No thanks, my e-mail address is too precious to me!"

To Alain & anyonoe else who is worried about their personal data use - IT ISN'T AN ISSUE ! - You can give a false name & disposable e-mail address. OR once you've received your serial No. - simply BLOCK the sender from further e-mails to you. You DO NOT NEED TO FILL the other data fields - THEY CAN BE BLANK !!!

-------------------------

As for the software itself - I've given it a trial run & although the GUI - ( Interface ) - is easy to look at - it's muddled up - it's not obvious where the commands are. Most of the decent Sync softwares I've tried were far easier to use. - On the PLUS SIDE though ... It IS portable AND once you've got to grips with the controls it's a reasonable software. I'll certainly keep it for future use.

-------------------------

A freebie you may be interested in include -

AllwaySync - ( Free for pesonal use only ) - I was so impressed with it's quality & simplicity that I purchased the Pro version - it's EXACTLY THE SAME as the FREE version BUT allows UNLIMITED Data Transfer.

This software suits me because its free (today) and PORTABLE. I can (and have) made as many copies of it as I want from initial installation.
It works, without re-installing, in any drive you want it on. I have it on C: , on USB drive and on an external hard drive, just by copying and pasting.
There are free ones out there but this FREEBIE saves me looking for them.

Only one link needed: http://allwaysync.com/download.html

It's the best. Period. No discussion. And free.

Going around for a long time, it's still actively being updated. Especially Webdav (skydrive etc), LAN, ... functionality is mention worthy!

Allway Sync Features
Free for personal use synchronization software. No spyware, adware or malware.
Easy-to-use graphical interface.
Performs true bi-directional and n-way file and folder synchronization, forget about backup and restore routines.
File modifications and deletions are tracked in a local database. So, Allway Sync knows the true history of your files - no unnecessary questions asked.
Our innovative, proprietary algorithms do not rely on the accuracy of the system clock or network connection quality. So, Allway Sync helps prevents data loss.
Generates a full report of differences between synchronization folders.
Synchronizes folders as well. Allway Sync detects when folders are removed from one device and removes them from any other corresponding synchronization targets.
Supports virtually any file system (FAT, NTFS, SAMBA, Netware, X-Drive, CDFS, UDF and more).
Can be installed on a desktop, laptop, USB stick, external HDD or a U3-enabled device (see details).
Capable of synchronizing more than two folders.
Synchronize data between your desktop PCs and laptops over a network.
A good way to backup and restore files if you run Allway Sync in one-way mode.
Specify independent synchronizarion parameters for any number of sets of folders (multiple jobs).
Transfer documents from one computer to another using an intermediate removable drive.
Or just synchronize with a removable device (USB key, flash drive, CDRW, Zip) so that you always have your data with you.
Flexible configuration and customization.
Supports files of any size.

Peace!

Devvie

#5 You complain that Sync TOGO wants your e-mail address and some other address.
They just want an e-mail address to send the registration code to. Standard practice for most software. As #3 says, just set up an email address especially for software registrations.
You will find that all software on GAOTD will have the same registration code for everyone on that day, sometimes with GAOTD as the username.
The software doesn't give you any choice where to intall it. It defaults to C: but you can easily copy or move it to anywhere on your system without re registering it.
