Why wasn't the description of this changed, when everyone was posting about it? Maybe the company didn't mean for us to get that description, but gee, couldn't it have been changed before more of us saw it and installed, and got rather angry that is DOESN'T Do what is described??? SEEMS like a trick!
Downloaded, installed, & UN-installed. Allway Sync programs are SO much better than this, and they DO what they say! Automatically! Free!

Beyond Compare, that's what I need. If you want to see a side-by-side full comparison, having parameters to include/exclude files by extension and seeing older/newer files filtered by color code, go for it. Consider Beyond Compare a prior step to the Sync Now! scope - they are NOT part of the same category but for collectors and purists, it's a must have.

I've used this program before, the standard version and the file limitations, as well as the transfer limitations are a pain once they are exceeded.

I decided to go with the free version of SyncBackSE at www.2brightsparks.com. Much better in my opinion and it's FREE!!

To #33 kelly - Absolutely hilarious!
Now we have kelly telling someone to "think think think".
Considering the tripe he delivers us every day - and looking at his previous post #3 with its typical deep and comprehensive analysis, it would suggest a strong case of the pot calling the kettle, don't you think?
Time to change your name again, ken!

By the way, what I do for real-time sync (with freeware) is this - it's rather complicated to set up but once it's in place, it's maintenance-free and really slick...

1) set up a linux that serves SMB (either a real box or a virtual machine on your PC if you have enough spare memory & cycles)

2) remap your 'my documents' to come from a directory on the linux.

3) export your old 'my documents' directory and have the linux server mount it.

4) on the linux, run 'filesystem in user space' (fuse) with a filing system (dupfs) that has the property that anything you write to the directory where it is mounted is duplicated in some other directory. Then set the other directory to be the mounted original 'my documents' from your PC...

So when you tie all this rather confusing muddle together, you simply save your files in 'my documents' as normal. The linux writes a copy to the linux file system, *and* writes a copy back to your PC where it would have been saved in the first place.

The copy saved on the linux can be local *or* you can save to something like 'sshfs' which copies the files to some remote location with scp or sftp.

Bingo! - instant real-time mirroring of your data off-site, for nowt! (well, not 100% real time - for performance reasons, the copy is saved only when you finally close the file, but it's close enough to real time for government work...)

For the linux programmers among us (I wouldn't dare suggest this mechanism for someone who wasn't...) the code to do the duplication is here: http://www.gtoal.com/fusestuff/dupfs/src/dupfs.c.html

#45: Oh, grow up. The comment "it now seems that the only ones benefiting from GOTD is the people who run the site" is assinine.

I've "benefited" considerably from GOTD's existence, and will hopefully continue to do so.

The fact that today's software developer seems to have attempted to pull a fast one -- isn't the first, won't be the last -- doesn't mean you're the victim of some International Conspiracy from which only the people behind GOTD will benefit.

I'm not DLing something whose contents don't match the packaging -- but so what? It's my choice today. And tomorrow -- thanks to GOTD -- there'll be a different choice: nobody is forcing you to DL anything.

Posts like yours really are dumb.

On June 11 GOTD gave away a program called "Beyond Sync"
Below is the description of the software offered then.
Compare this with the description for the software offered today.

The 2 discriptions and file sizes are almost identical.

"Beyond Sync has an easy to use build-in scheduler. You set it and forget it, just focus on your own jobs. I went to the website, and sure enough, on the comparison page, this is the standard version, and all the sweet talk up above is only available on the Professional version listed for $49.95. This could be an honest mix up; I hope so, and I hope it is rectified because I would really like the pro version very much. I'll keep my eye open for any change in the situation. Thanks GAOTD for all your hard work!! I hope you earn a lot for all the trouble we give you.

I don't understand how Val comment #42 who contributes some useful information yet gets a negative vote of usefulness, yet comments such as 'Who said that' who have nothing whatsoever to say except a big gripe because they aren’t getting the software they want are getting positives.... It's beyond me?

Not only that..... the usual 'knock the developers software' comment such as that from Stan comment #40 really will only help towards alienating the giveaway project from other developers, thus accelerating the demise of this fantastic project. It just takes that sort of negativity, which lets be honest really isn't constructive criticism, but just self centered ranting because (as with the first case above) the complainer isn't seeing useful software they want for themselves....... and some even have to go as far as to insult those that think this software is okay.

I'm sure that's why the game giveaway side of this ended up going bottoms up - you just have to look back at the constant whining about how c**p most of the games were..... despite most of them being good commercial games that most of the big developers sold.

That said there’s nothing wrong with negative comments such as Fubars which is rich in info and suggestions.

The program installed fine. Tried its various features, especially the various sync/backup options to mirror, copy files between directories.

This program is different from most programs in this category because it has some backup options most others don't have. It is the closest program to Microsoft SyncToy 2.0., which is truly unique. I was looking for an alternative to Synctoy because Synctoy setting can not be backed up or saved.

The user interface is very nice, easy to use, however I found bugs in the sync algoritm. Changed the content of some files in the destination folder, and the software did not picked those up even in full sync mode. New file additions were picked up correctly, but file changes did not.

Overall I think Sync Now has good potential in it, it is above the average file sync app. It is a good candidate to be a replacement of SyncToy 2.0, but bugs needs to be corrected and some new sync options added, some features of SyncToy (Echo mode) are not yet supported by Sync Now!

Ease of use: 9
User interface: 10
Features: 7
Ovearll: 8 (after the sync bugs had been corrected)

This is a very timely offering, GOTD, as my brand-new post in my utilities blog (after a summer-long hiatus) discusses syncing issues and reviews a couple of Web-hosted solutions (I recommend Dropbox).

A brief evaluation of this offering reveals that it is a pretty good syncing utility, but lacks features that would help it equal the best competitors.

Andy (#21) and Chuck (#30): I agree that Allway Sync is the best sync program I have found, after reviewing a few dozen. However, the free version does indeed have a limit on the number of files processed (files scanned, rather than copied). Though it's pretty high (20,000/month), I have hit it a few times. See my discusion of sync tool features in post #58 of my utilities blog, which links back to my earlier review of Allway Sync and other worthy competitors.

Viking (#24) and Tom (#29): I also like Dropbox, and prefer it slightly over Syncplicity (as explained in my blog post this week).

I hope this is helpful.

Liuxz Software have a definite problem on their hands. First the cheapest version of giveaway is SURPASSED in ease of use and functionality by several FREEWARE products.

The second problem they now face is negative advertisement for their GAOTD product release.... it will definitely cost them more in the long run than the cost of releasing the flagship product for evaluation.......

Maybe they're scared to hear the truth about their flagship product!

It´s annoying:
Again there is advertised another (more functional!) version as “giveaway” than is delivered - and of course doesn´t meet the price, too!

This “giveaway” is only the “standard"-version for 29,95 $ - not the “pro"-version!

What this means:

1. NO real-time synch
2. NO tasplaner
3. NO improved copy-algorhythm for big files
4. NO run as service
5. BUT LIMITED number of files synchroable

While you might cope with 2., 3. and 4., - and perhaps with 5., too, it is not fitting and not appropriate advertising this way!

Thus I will stay with "robocopy" or similar free solutions, scheduled by nncron(Lite), or, in less professional surrounding, with DirSynch etc.

First of all, Jason, #20, it's really NOT fine -- free doesn't matter if it's useless, and GOTD doesn't exist only for our benefit -- devs want the feedback. If everyone only always was a cheerleader 'because it's free', noone would offer a thing. If something is normally sold for $30 and it's not even close to worth $30, getting a kick in the pants from us about it is a good thing.

Now, it's funny, I was just looking for something like this, as I plan to get an external drive to backup my stuff. But since the two big things that I need are only in pro version ('set it and forget it', and run as a service), are there any good freeware programs that do this?

Despite the description disparity between "Standard" and "Pro", I tried this on one of my networked computers, a laptop running Win98SE, which it says is supported - and all it did was crash, no matter what I tried, with the most arcane errors I've ever seen in over 25 years with computers - like "Canvas does not allow drawing"?!?!? What does THAT have to do with sync software??? Sorry, today's offering is a NO-GO and a big thumbs down from me.

GAOTD staff - we know you can't win 'em all. No matter- I'm very happy to keep coming back every day and supporting the site because this is a great place, and I tell a lot of people about it. THANK YOU, from a very happy and satisfied supporter.

Thanks Andy for the allwaysync link. I will use it. I prefer freeware where possible, especially when I can delete and reinstall whenever I need to as opposed to the shareware or freebees here that have a limited install time frame. Not saying I won't use some of what is offered here just prefer freeware over time limited install programs.

As others have mentioned, as of the time of this post, the description, screenshot, and price are for the professional version, but this is the standard version, 4.2.2.128.

Install was very clean, simple registration (cut-and-paste is always recommended).

This is a basic synchronization app, with typical features, although the standard version lacks such things as scheduling. It can create a zip file, although you lose some features. It doesn't say, and I didn't test, whether it supports Zip64 (large files; it uses DelphiZip, based on InfoZip). There's a Read Me in the shortcuts, and a list of hotkeys in the program folder.

For XP and Vista users, I recommend Microsoft SyncToy v2.0 instead. Neither Sync Now! nor SyncToy have a built-in scheduler (Sync Now! installs a shortcut to a scheduler, but it doesn't exist), so you'll need to use Vista Task Scheduler / XP Scheduled Tasks. I find Sync Now!'s interface to be more cumbersome than SyncToy's. Of course, nothing else matches some of the features in SyncToy 2. Apart from its special features, SyncToy is generally more versatile in terms of options. Both can preview operations, both generate log files. Both will copy newer file attributes, such as the indexing attribute, but neither copies alternate data streams. Neither Sync Now!'s ribbon nor context menu have a way to edit a task, but double-clicking the task lets you edit it. There are some global options available from the system menu (icon in upper left), sort of hidden via a button on the lower right of that menu. Sync Now! can compare files after synchronizing, but SyncToy can perform a secure hash to determine what files should be synchronized if the timestamps are unreliable.

Advanced users can do their own synchronization via the command-line utility Robocopy; standard in Vista, an older version can be downloaded for XP. It can copy alternate data streams among other things, but you'll lose the advanced synchronization features which SyncToy supports.

Here we go again... Well folks it seems "shareware/liteware" is on the rise here and the developers are getting sly on the details. Just that in this case maybe too many deatails but not the right ones?

Okay first off, nowhere on the GOTD page does it mention the particular version being offered. It is likely that one would not even know there are multiple versions if they do not visit the developer's website and look at the comparison chart.

Secondly, according to what is stated in the GOTD description and compared in the comparison chart, it wouldn't be a bad assumption that the company is offering the Profession version. Yet it turns out that the Standard edition is the version offered and it lacks a key feature mentioned in the GOTD description. The Statndard edition may be good in it's own right but I like to get what is advertised.

It is getting quite disgusting now. No thanks to the shareware, I can do without it. Thanks to the companies and developers out there that offer high quality full-featured applications here, you are greatly appreciated and your deeds have not gone unnoticed.

On a side note:

Seriously though this is just crazy, a whole new pro version just for 3 features? Considering the price of the application, why not sale one exclusive version that is fully-featured? If not then make the pro version worth that added price tag. It's just a ploy to sucker people out of their money, other than that I see no reason for the multi-version bull that many software companies exhibit these days. Oh well...

I have compaired over a dozen file sychronization programs both free and for a fee types. The winner by a longshot is a program called allwaysync. It will do everything you could possibly want a syncronization tool to do. It is absolutely free for personal use. It is inexpensive (under $20) for business use. No limitations placed on the free version. It it one of the very special tools I use everyday.

Download the program from their site here:

This installs and works fine on 64-bit Vista.

It is indeed the standard version, not Pro.

I take exception to the implication that there is some underhandedness or inadequacy in this offer. It's fine. It's free for 24 hours. And there's not a huge difference with the "Pro" version anyway, according to the comparison chart. I wish the perpetual whiners would buzz off to Bits du Jour, where a discount of 50% or so is standard. But of course they won't, because even a DAILY GIVEAWAY isn't enough for them.
