It crashes many times on my computer.I like Movavi VideoSuite better. It also can:
Capture video from your digital and web cameras
Convert video to run on any mobile device
Split and merge video files
Add filters and special effects
Rip, backup and copy DVDs
Burn data, audio, and video CDs and DVDs
Create classy video postcards

Like many comments have stated, Clicking on "Help" does absolutely nothing. However, I did see a message after installing stating, I think, something to the effect that not all features will work unless the computer is rebooted. I did not reboot because I have been having problems with the registry hive, I think, and the computer is having troubles booting through to windows.

So, until I have time to work this out with the Microsoft Techs, I will need to wait to see if a reboot will get the "Help" function to work. Thus, could someone please post here to let me know if a reboot corrects the "Help" function problem?.....Thanks.

First time I tried to run it, it crashed. Unhandled Exception. Second time, same thing. So, there isn't much I can do with it. Except remove it. And move on.

just so you know guys, nero 8 is out for a while now
and it still rulez; as for this one it gives me "out of memory" error message and just quits on me, i'll try closing some of the many programs i run at one time, but i always run them at one time, and this is the only software that is running out of memory at install.
wich is further odd is i can install and run other huge programs but not this one... so don't quit on nero yet, cuz nero would never quit on you,do note nero its been around for years, and it was meant to do a lot of stuff, it may not succeed at it all perfectly, but it will do the job for 99% of all windows users, not to mention for all win versions from 9x to vista out there

This software was horrible to use compared to my current freeware tool (ImgBurn). No drag & drop, got several errors before it eventually crashed. Was just trying to burn a normal data DVD! Not recommended. At least try ImgBurn aswell, and see which you prefer.

Thanks and have a great day everyone. :)

#39 Comment by Adam Gordon - Does anyone know if you create an ISO image from an AVI file, and burn it to disk. Could you watch it on a regular DVD player?

DVD Data formats don't normally play AVI files on standard DVD decks.
A DivX-certified DVD player will play xvid/divx/mpeg4 AVI files.
I believe there may also be WMV windows video capable players.

Or use ConvertXtoDVD to quickly burn AVIs to DVD-Video format with a selection menu. Other programs can do necessary encoding as well.

I also have the same problems some have repeatedly mentioned with no proper answers given - There is no help file when help is clicked. Also, I tried to copy one of my DVDs, which seems to make a successful image, somewhere? Now how do i find it and burn it to a blank DVD? I cannot find out where it is held or how to transfer it.
Someone mentioned an iso file so I searched and found it in the Starburn dir under Wizards, and it's a 7.8 GB file, so I think this is the image. But, it won't allow me to copy to a 4.4 GB blank DVD. Any help?

I'm thankful for the program, especially if this can be solved.

Software is so easy to figure out. It would be worth buying BUT_No Disc to Disc copying_ and it CRASHES when you "Build Image", and sometimes when you use/access star port "virtual divice" it also has problems compiling some video files for dvd video creation...I was able to create an .iso image using "Dvd Decrypt" though. The give away of the day has no limmits on use as far as I can tell,Other than glitches that need to be cleaned up...a great product for free...

Could someone explain why for the first time this has occured, when I setup the GAOTD key for the Grab&Burn I received this first as I allowed to install,
Application: DrvInst.exe
Destination IP: 66.38.192.233:DNS
Party SPTD Setup V1.50 (c) 2004 Duplex Secure Ltd.

then, after this I received the usual GAOTD Activated web site took place way after the Grab&Burn was installed.

Is this spyware since I can not find this software no ware in my Program Files nor All Programs. What did I download?

First of all, the screen for the app doesn't line up. Can't move it so that I can see the first menu item. That's unforgivable for a so-called commercial program. Secondly, after choosing the Burn Video icon and starting the wizard and selecting test, it stopped and gave an error message without a hint as to what the error is.

I don't need that kind of aggravation!

Sergio, i used SmartSniff form Nirsoft.

You may also use HTTP Sniffer, very useful to monitor a specific program's network access. (didn't work for me this time with StarBurn...)

That's it. Enjoy it's freeware!

Hi, Jul!

I'm no professionnal reader, but there is no need tu uninstall StarBurn before installation of improved version of StarPort.

StarPortLite driver will still be running, but you may disable it, reboot, and then uninstall (delete) it, using pserv if you will.

re: #43. Jennifer, if you could explain to me how to use the GAOTD activation software with Opera, I would much appreciate it. I have tried 5 or 6 downloads from here, and like the software. However, the activation software ALWAYS grabs IE without asking me which browser I wish to use, even though I have Opera set as my default browser in Vista. I have not set any of the security features in IE, because I do not use that software. As per Secunia Software Inspector, Opera is still the safest browser available.

re #58. I would imagine that the whole reason people give away their software on this site is so that users will report problems or request different features so that the company can improve the product. Some of the deprecatory language is certainly out of line; but, the comments themselves are not.

Pretty good program.

#10, I don't get why it has a explorer window either.

#52, My Philips +RW's work fine.

I would use this over Nero (especially Nero 8) simply as it isn't a 180MB download with tonnes of uneeded extras. If Nero came just as a burning program then it would be a lot better.

If you look here, you may find two freeware versions of RocketDivision interesting softs:

StarPort is a more compete version of StarPortLite program that installs itself with StarBurn (and asks for reboot).

You may create virual disks with iso images, and ramdisk (whose size seems to be only limited by the amont of your physical ram) and some other features.

Power users may also appreciate StarWind, on the same page.

Anyway, StarBurn works well and fast on my system (Xp Pro):

Only five minutes to copy a Dvd (4 Go) to an image!
Maybe i'll be it sometime! ;-)

StarBurn is a very nice piece of software in that it seems to work as advertised. The interface is of medium to high quality. Though it is hardly intuitive. Users that have Nero 7 down pat should not have much of a problem in learning how to use StarBurn. Others will face a steep learning curve as soon as they move from burning a simple CD data disk to figuring out how to burn images.

Those (above)that have compared StarBurn to Nero 7 and suggested StarBurn take the place of Nero 7 are way off base. Nero 7 has over a dozen applications for multi-media alone. That is a dozen more than those applications shared by both programs. Documentation of the applications that are a part of the Nero 7 package number a total of 300 plus pages. The two programs have no where near the same capabilities. For the power hungry computer user, Nero 7 is the way to go. Other might not ever get the Nero program to work as it should.

The tools that come with Nero 7 not only measure all of the parameters of the CD / DVD drives - they also let the program (Nero)user configure the speed of the drives. More and better tools come with Nero 7. However, those tools can make understanding the program difficult.

Most computer users appear to struggle with a program that has any complexity to it. When program came in a box with a printed manual, beginners had a chance of being able to use their programs. Help files do not take the place of a written operation manual. Very simple programs might be able to get by without a printed manual - but anything other than the simplest program can sit unused by beginners or basic computer users.

It is too bad that StarBurn does not come with a printed manual. The program can eventually be understood by most computer users. Many users will quit trying to learn the ropes of a program before "eventually" ever comes. StarBurn could be a good program for most everyone, out side of power users, if it were simpler and it came with a written manual.

I use Nero 7 Enterprise, and find that it is flawles, rips ANY DVD I have ever handed it, encrypts my movies so people like you guys using primitive programs like this one can't rip them (thanks for letting me see which encryption this can handle, so I know how to block it!).

I found this program works OK for probably 99% of the people out there, but it doesn't begin to touch what a full Nero Enterprise package does for only a few buck more. If you don't have a package, and can't afford one, this one is OK.

The authoring stuff is way primitive, next to Nero. In fact, it is primitive compared to Arcsoft's stuff and they give that away with new DVD burners.

I found it choked on about half my test set of DVD's (chosen to reflect the different protection schemes).

There were many bugs, I am on a timetable today, but I was able to confirm nearly every error lsted so far in this form, and in Bladed Thoth's review.

My first ever post here. This is probably a keeper :) Thank You Team of GAOTD!

I had no problem downloading or installing (on my Notebook w. XPH) as far as I can tell, and application seems to work just fine; no problem with firewall etc. Nice interface and also easy to understand for me as a non-geek, and non-native in English tounge/language. However, Help button in the StarBurn does not work for me, but Help does open swiftly from Actions dialog windows. Although Help-file is quite meager from what I can find...

I would also like to know what the correct registration data should read? The only info I can see is during start up, when program window expose "Licensed to: RDS User" (would this be correct?).

I also wonder if someone could explain the "DVD Feature" options under Properties button?

Thanks!

Bit ironic that intall requires a reboot, though there is a checkbox on the last install screen letting you run the application. Didn't reboot, ran application, clicked on DVD drive, application hung/crashed Vista Ultimate. OK, reboot, try copying DVD to iso image. Started throwing C++ errors. I'm thinking this software doesn't work very well. On the positive side, nice interface, seems well thoughtout and has the potential to be a good bit of software. Doesn't seem to work for me, though.

Nice program. Rips video/audio, burns DVDs/CDs, and can mount ISO files as a virtual CD. Supports Blu-ray and HD-DVD. Runs on Vista. Intuitive interface. This is one of the few applications that I will accept the use of the word "powerful" in the description. Definitely a keeper...thank you GOTD!!!

FYI...
Phones home each time the program is run (209.51.200.170) and checks for a new version. There is no way to disable "Check for update on start".
