I know this one is over, but in case it comes up for grabs again:

Saves you time. Yes you can do this same thing using other scripts and css and if you are a programmer you can write the script. But this will save you time. You can tweak if you know what you are doing, specially when you output js and css only. With editing the css, you are only limited by your imagination when it comes to customizing.

The ability to include text, images, text and images and html makes this very feature rich.

For those that have sites, if this comes around again grab it!

Even if you don't have a site, and you are into design and code, heck make something for your desktop! Windows lets you use an html file as your wallpaper.

Absolutely splendid piece of software indeed,
I was sitting there eating my morning buttered Scones while installing.
And all went according to plan, Marvelous bloody marvelous

To LonniH (#35). Thanks for your suggestion to reboot. I did that but
still the error message came up. I think the hard drive needs reformatting which I am reluctant to do as it would mean losing all
my downloaded programs from GOTD.

This is not a simple scroller; it offers many advanced options while being easy to use. You want this. Seems like it's worth their asking price. One of the better giveaways I've seen this year.

After quite some time with this program i find it is good and worth using if you do not alredy havge the complete set of web tools at hand. Nothing real special in this except it is rather easy to use and for beginers it may be just what they needed.

For those people who say they don't have any use for this program and that GAOTD should stay with programs for the general user - I have a question - how many video converters, video downloaders, system cleaners, backup programs, . . . . ets. do you need? It is no wonder that a common complaint on this website is that "I lost all my GAOTD programs when I had to perform a clean install". And after you have 5 or 6 of every general pupose program and learn how to back them up properly, what's next? Then you start looking for something new like maybe designing your own website. And by the way, do you know how much someone can make designing websites?

@#11 Nathan:
It didn't ask me to restart. I'm using Windows 7 build 7000. It might have asked to restart if you checked the add frontpage, dreamweaver, and/or expression extensions because then it modifies those files.

Okay, I've had a little bit of time to work with this a bit now, and I must say it rocks!

If you are a coder and validation matters to you I suggest you export this with the js and css option. The css has a couple of synyax errors and is a bit bloated, but if you are comfortable with editing it you can make it leaner and cleaner and valid.

This has the potential to allow you to create some awesome featured content sliders!

Thank you SoThink & GAOTD!

My one and only teesy nitpick it that I'd like to see the output validate without tweakage from the end user, and less bloat in the css.

All in all...a HUGE thumbs up!

Installed ok on my laptop, Vista 32-bit machine ok except for the problem with DWSothink.mxp. Can not install that. I have no program that even knows what to do with it. Must be missing something on the 32-bit that was on the 64-bit machine.

You don't need Dreamweaver or anything to use this software if you know how to use it. Great for making those neat web sites.

#33 -- I believe the expression is, "Your mileage may vary." More to the point, many of the programs on GAOTD are specialty items. The "appeals to everybody" part is the computer itself, able to perform a zillion tasks depending on what you tell it to do.

And the program integrates with Dreamweaver et al. in addition to its stand-alone module. You don't need DW. (And there are more than a few web designers who work in basic text editors, as in Notepad or its open-source clones.)

Same as it ever was: If it does what it says it does, don't diss it. If you're not going to use it, don't download it.

@33 Yes, you are entitled to your opinion about what offerings GAOTD should bring to the public, but would respectfully ask that you make no judgement about what others like or don't like.

Why should GAOTD only offer products that would be useful to "the average home user" and what is an "average home user" anyway? There are many of us who would class ourselves as such and yet enjoy the challenge of learning new skills, including building websites.

You can easily learn a bit about html for free from any number of websites, use a free program like komposer to build pages or if you have Office, can use frontpage if it is part of your suite. There is no need to pay big money to learn how to build a good page and it is great fun. Today's offering from GAOTD will make the fun even better. Many thanks.

Thank you! I don't have a website but I quite like playing around with things or seeing things I make on 'puter. I thought I'd add to the like it because It seems to be that there are several video converters given away but people want moar! Then list the freeware alternatives and repeat!

As for the Giveaway, it seems to be fairly quick and painless to make pictures scroll and the help is quick and to the point! And the options do pretty much everything I could think of. I don't use Dreamweaver or anything, worked fine with notepad++ and FireFox.

@33 the sports fan:
You can use this giveaway without Dreamweaver or any of those other expensive apps. The best pros and amateurs don't use Dreamweaver; they code in HTML and CSS using free Notepad++. Those simple ingredients make possible the best web pages.

Download and install was easy. Registration worked like a charm, just copy and paste. You can click the help link at the top of the software page that takes you to a tutorial forum where you can either download the the tutorials or you can visit them on the forum.

#33 Yes I think you are missing something.

1. Judging by the comments as well as the thumbs up here plenty of people have use for it.

2. Many of us have older versions of Dreamweaver, it is not essential to have the latest.

3. It is not essential to have any such program anyway, because it will work perfectly well as a standalone.

You say that just because it's by a developer we like does not necessarily make it good. I agree, but this piece of software is as good as it gets. There is nothing I know of that does what this does.

You have every right to pass on this, I do the same for all the video converters that everyone thinks are wondeful, but I have no use for, but don't put others off with your half-baked comments.

Looks like it could be extremely useful!

I had no problems with install or registration. I code by hand, so I'd be adding the script manually.

For me the major thing with things that 'generate' like this is the question of 'does it output clean valid code on it's own.

It does not. Opening one of the pre-made options and previewing in in the browser, I ran the generated html file through the W3C validator and it came up with 267 Errors. Not cool!

I'm sure I'll be keeping it, but also am sure I'll be doing a lot of tweaking to make sure that that when I use this js on a page it will be clean and valid code.

Outstanding product... as usual with sothink!
Thanks guys!

If you want to use this product at its extended possibilities, there is a little learning curve, I think. Anyway, the help file is really informative and cleverly built.

The possibilities are almost infinite. The integration with expression web 2 works flawlessly and the widget builder allowing other people to embed your scroller on their own websites or blogs is a powerful and nice feature...

Congrats!!!

Dear GAOTD No 22 says that he will loss this and all his other programs when he gets his new computer, surely he should be able to down load this and all his other programs onto a flash drive and then reinstall them on his new computer. This is what I have done and I keep the programs on a flash drive just incase I lose them. They are also backed up on my Exsternal E disc just in case. Kind regards John

To CathL (27) Have you tried rebooting? I would recommend a cold start then try to open the software again. I used to get this message occassionally on my old computer and a reboot would usually fix it. If that doesn't work I would uninstall and retry the download. It is possible that it downloaded on a bad sector.

My husband downloaded the program several hours ago and seems pleased with it. I recall the last time we needed a vertical scroller I ended up doing it in Flash rather than fiddle with JavaScript. This should make things much easier. Thanks GAOTD and Sothink.

How about having a go at Sothink Video Converter? That would be much more appealing to most visitors to give away. Whats up anyway? Saving the best for last?
I pass today because I'm not developing a website or have any applictaions that this offer integrates with.

Reply   |   Comment by Charles K  –  15 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (-11)

OK, so maybe I'm missing something here! Does everybody that gave this a thumbs up build or create websites? No, I thought not! Just because the offers by a developer most of us (including myself) like doesn't make it worth a darn to the average home user. Does it now?
Does anyone realize just how expensive Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 is? Let me shed a little light on that point, if I may. Upgrades from $599 & New, Full versions from $1,699. No, I'm not in err here. Have a peak for yourselves: https://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/index.cfm?store=
OLS-US&view=ols_prod&category=/Applications/WebPremium&distribution
Method=FULL&nr=0&sdid=EPTCK#store=OLS-US&loc=en_us&view=ols_prod&category=/Applications/WebPremium

Other software that this offer integrates with must be cheaper then that. But that brings me back to the "how big is the market for a program like this"? I certainly have no use for it. I know a few regular visitors to GODT have a website but I'd bet they didn't create it with Dreamweaver or anything that comes close to the cost of it. I just pass without voting today.
I'm just of the opinion that software that appeals to the average home user is a better way for give way to go on a daily basis. That would be more likely to generate sales for the vendors that offer their wares here then something so spefic to a certain task that most of us have no use for!

To Terry #10... No answers yet... Unless I missed it.

I guess you will have to play with it a bit and see if you can put some "JavaScript Web Scroller" output into an auction. Worst thing that would happen is you have to end an auction early if it messes up the listing. Then you can let others know.

#24 I guess you're using Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress or something similar. I doubt this will integrate directly, but I'm sure you will be able to import finished product into any of them, much as you can do with any other JavaScript, CSS, etc.

Maybe someone else will be able to shed a bit of light on this, as currently I'm just playing around with these types of programs, so I'd be interested in some answers too.

Ashraf, and fellow GAOTD'ers I don't have a website as of yet, but am a graphic designer. Strictly print advertising. I'm wondering, since I am not familiar with this software, if it would prove useful in a print production environ? I am a quick learner and it sounds like the learning curve isn't terribly steep. Any input would be appreciated!

Wow this looks awesome! I am just sad that i will lose this along with other programs when my new computer comes in this week. :/

This looks like a really cool GiveAaway but for those that actually know Javascript (ME!!!!!) it could be a waste of time because Jquery conquers all Javascript as it has the best integration and user base with thousands of user created widgets plugins and a UI system.

Thanks GAOTD
