I think you did a pretty good job in covering the bases. The "bad" list only includes trivial with no backup. Your comments refer to a dashed together, I am in a hurry get out of the way, and I got the first one comment cursory review. The author of the review that you are referencing would do well to take lessons from Whiterabbit.

Those who have not read some of WhiteRabbit reviews have missed out on a series of treats. Whiterabbit usually reviews games. Even if you are not a gamer I believe that you will appreciate the style and effort that this man puts into all of the reports that he publishes. It is obvious that the man puts in many hours of research and documentation for each of his reviews. It is a shame that we cannot get him to review GOTD's offerings for this side of the GgiveawayoftheDay website.

Why people thumbs down on him? If the software is not good, you tell what's the best? Don't just blindly put down on the free software and on people... I know some people put on me, but think why, before you do?

#5: "...doesnt say anything about DVD, dvd is VOB files right ?"

Scott, DVDs are all mpg2 video, & those video files are combined [muxed] with audio & subs into the often many .VOB files in the DVD's VIDEO_TS folder. Because of that, video conversion software that reads DVDs is often specialized -- it can separate the various .VOB files into titles [e.g. movies, shorts etc], then extract the audio, video, & optionally subs you choose [there can be multiple audio & sub tracks] before conversion.

Now since DVDs are mpg2 video, many [maybe even most] conversion apps will accept .VOB files -- they just can't sort out the titles, & often can't tell which audio or sub track to extract. If whatever converter will accept a .VOB file [you may try renaming it from VOB to .mpg etc], use DVD Shrink to *copy* [not re-encode] whatever titles to a folder on your hard drive [with your choice of 1 audio & opt. 1 sub]. Important: in the Shrink preferences uncheck .VOB file splitting. Look in the VIDEO_TS folder Shrink just created, & choose the larger .VOB file -- that's the one you want to import/convert. Note: Shrink can also handle trimming -- trim in Shrink & you have less to copy.

#9: "Convert Video from .wmv & .mov to .avi?
This is what I need to accomplish. My goal is to get movies taken on cell phone, digital camera and Ipod to digital photo frame."

What you need to do, Pat, is research the brands/models of hardware used to record the video, & see what solutions others use & recommend. While Windows Media [wmv] isn't too bad, .mov files can contain almost anything... some digital cameras for example are known for recording very non-standard video, sometimes as .mov files, & they can require certain methods, software etc. The same goes for digital photo frames -- some frames, like many cheaper handhelds are extremely picky... you might even be limited to using proprietary software from the frame's manufacturer.

Well, FWIW, I didn't like the full version of their video converter [Sothink HD Video Converter -- an earlier GOTD], & see no reason to like the same software in a limited, iPhone version any better.

To be fair, I both understand & like the fact that Sothink sell's more than 1 version -- why pay for what you don't need? And the iPhone converter offered today is older than their HD convertor -- maybe some problems were introduced with the newer version? But I still can't find any reason to like Sothink iPhone Video Converter, given the free & low cost alternatives...

Where several video conversion apps keep to themselves, not bothering Windows, with zero [or very near zero] potential to break audio/video handling on your PC/laptop, some [like Sothink's converters] do not. They want, &/or too often insist on you installing added software they depend on to do their job, rather than just incorporating that same code inside their application. Sothink wants you to install AviSynth [not a problem], along with ffdshow & the Matroska Splitter [which can cause nightmares]. Sothink would also add 5 video handling files to Windows [at least 2 might conflict with what you might already have], plus would add a folder full of Real audio/video handling files to your PC/laptop [a potential problem if you already use Real software, if/when WIndows is told to use this stuff insterad].

Now you might feel that risking a little pain is worth it if/when it's for a good cause, but IMHO Sothink converters can't give you anything you don't get elsewhere, pain free -- in fact I think several painless solutions [like the WinX & Fast converters] give you quite a bit more, including better speed & quality. Some video converters, like Wondershare use commercial video encoders [MainConcept -- same as Adobe]. Others [including Sothink's converters] are more or less front ends [GUIs] for free or opensource audio/video handling code libraries [e.g. encoders usually = ffmpeg (used by today's GOTD), xvid, &/or X264]. Using a common encoder sets a ceiling -- not a floor on quality of results. They differ by hopefully adding an easy GUI, with the settings used for re-sizing &/or encoding [there are several methods &/or quality settings], & the efficiency of their code tying it all together [= speed of converting]. If they add value (over & above what you could get using the base software front ends depend on), it's often in areas like being able to accept more import formats -- Sothink has long focused on Flash for example... the only place or feature where I think they *might* claim some sort of edge. So in a nutshell, unless you're having trouble with a particular Flash conversion, not having any success elsewhere, can't see any reason to risk giving this GOTD a try.
