#75, BrittnyCDunn, the wonderful GOTD moderators deleted my reply for no reason yet again (I think one of them has a personal problem). Click on the link in post #12 and enter your email address. I originally posted this yesterday, but the link is still active as of the time of this post.

#76, your comments, apart from being incorrect, completely lack common sense.

Sucks. Installed with 17 hours left, and still have the 21 days countdown. Waste of time. I could have donwloaded from cnet, it would've been the same.

Not sure why I would need this program. But, I tried it out, it does what it says. It also uninstalled perfectly fine.

This seems to be a program for people who do not know very much about computers, since everything it claims to do can be done within the XP OS, or through the BIOS. The only thing it seems to offer is the volume control thing, but there is a plugin for Winamp that does exactly the same thing, except one does not have to shut down the 'puter to do it.

I have a question. Why would anyone bother shutting down thier computer?

Leaving a computer on does absolutely nothing to the computer, provided one has sufficient control over heat dissipation. On the other hand, turning a computer off and on is the worst thing you can do to your power supply, outside of letting it overheat.

While it costs me about $500 or so a year to keep the computer running 24/7, compare that to the price of having to replace a $300 motherboard, $400 power supply, or (shudder) $1,500 processor (and the motherboard I am presently using has two of 'em). And, that does not include the huge tech fees most people whould have to add on.

I _DO_ turn off the monitors (now there is some serious power consumption), but that is easily done through the screensaver power utility built in to Windows.

Also, depending on whether your power supply is large enough you can do serious damage to various chips by cycling power as the power supply voltages may vary signficantly, dipping and rising into voltages and frequencies that WILL damage your motherboard and very-costly-to-replace processor chips.

#60, There are instructions above. You have to kind of fight your way through it. Go to the site, get the key(s), go to product and use them with the 'register' button.

I didn't think I'd need it. I tried it. It worked. I'm not sure how to rate it, maybe 6 mostly due to usefulness. It does what it says, but I normally use the packaged 'sleep' or shutdown.

@DN: Many newer computers have a setting in their CMOS to turn the computer on or off at a specific date and time. I know that Dell offers it, but I'm not sure about other manufacturers.

Thanks, GAOTD, but I'll pass this time. It does sound nice, and I appreciate the courtesy to give it away free, but I don't have any use for it; Windows has all the features I need.

#2 security ware (ot)
avira (nagware) or avast are ok.
prevention is best. (IIRC, av have given me only false positives from downloaded files that tend to have "intrusive" actions, such as fw tests & recovery cds)
prevention: set ie/oe tight, or better: just avoid it/them (but set whatever you use tight).
prevention: proxomitron & HOSTS (www.mvps.org)
use hardware router with a firewall.
use multiple on-demand scanners for every download.

Nice, for those that need an example of when to use.....last night i put on a move through my computer for the old man. he has no clue about computers. I had to get out of bed 3 hours later to shut everything down. I wish i had this yesterday. (i just hope that it does what it says)!

Shutting down your computer is important and if this software helps do that, then well done, SmartSleep and GOTD. Apart from reducing your electricity bill - you are also taking further steps to reduce global warming (or, in the case of some of our US cousins - taking the first steps to reduce global warming).

Another free software application which does this is LocalCooling. Their knowledge of energy units is a little naive (terms such as how many trees and gallons of oil you have saved), but it can be a fun way to learn how to reduce energy use on your desktop (Windows XP only).

A big thank you to number 47 for the link to NatWest/Royal Bank of Scotland free offer!

I dint want to sound blatantly ungrateful. Again, thanks for the givaways, even with the problem with Smart Sleep Win 98. I am not upset with GAOTD. I love GAOTD! I am a lil upset with Dextronet though. I bet anyone using Win 98 would have the same problems. I know, it is slow and outdated, but works well on my laptop for email and basic internet.

It screwed up my Win 98 SE laptop! It overwrote my windows, system\oleaut32.dll file and made it incompatible with Ralink Network card. Lost my wireless DSL, some files would not execute. Could not get uninstall to work either. Had to get on the internet with my XP computer and get the dll file off the internet. Then because of loss of LAN too, had to transfer the file via 3.5 diskette. Got things running again. Finally was able to uninstall Smart Sleep. Thinking it may be a fluke, I reinstalled Smart Sleep. Same thing happened, but with the good .dll file handy, I overwrote the oleaut32 file in ...\system\ folder. I had already installed Smart Sleep on my XP machine, and it works fine. Anyone wlse have problems installing and using on Win 98 machines? GAOTD says it is compatible with Win 98. Was not the case with this machine.

Here's a nice little free alternative called "SwitchOff" that does a basic shutdown and sits in the sys tray. Can also do re-starts, hibernation, etc.. You can accessed it from a remote PC as well via password. http://yasoft.8k.com/eng/switchoff/ . Screen shots of older version on web page don't do it justice (new UI is a bit nicer / better layed-out), but it works as advertised on XP! Can be changed as needed, or set and forget. Command line and silent. No super bells and whistles, just a nice little app that does the job well.

I dwnldd SmartSleep to see what I can't live without. So far most these little specialty apps offered have been out-won by the comparable freebies. But there are exceptions sometimes, and that's what we're all here to find.

Is it treasure or trash?! To each their own delight!

This looks like a nice program but what I would really like to see is a program that would lock down my monitor, mouse and keyboard for a set amount of time at a predetermined interval so that I would be forced to get my larger than life sized butt off this comfortable chair and out into the fresh air...or wherever. And if it could activate itself at nine in the morning...or whenever, when a walk in my garden would be enjoyable, and deactivate itself at nine in the evening...or whenever, when only the mosquitoes and blackflies are allowed to enjoy my garden, that would be perfect. Any suggestions?
And by-the-way GOTD, I think so highly of your site that I tell everyone about it, even people I've just met...if they give me half a chance. :) It constantly surprises me that not everyone with a computer knows about you, wassup with that!!!

I was so hoping for a good screensaver! Actually, I'm hoping for something on the order of "Dazzle" or the Winamp plugin "MilkDrop". Real eye candy.

I'll pass on today's program, as I have no use for it...or any of the programs in the "more titles" section for that matter. I'm sure some people do, but I don't. I did download and use the folder marker program from a couple days ago, and I like it a lot. It's pretty easy to use, and it serves a function that I can find handy.

Thank you, GOD team for all of the offerings, whether they are individually useful or not. It's impossible to please everybody every day, but you manage to please the majority daily. Keep up the good work.

Good morning everyone! :)

With all the excellent software we've received through GOTD over the past few months, I already have ALL these functions covered (multiple times!) by several other different applications that I'm using.

I'll pass on this one.

Thank you Dextronet for being a part of our GOTD family! I hope we get to try your other product "Fast Paste" before too long, I already have a multitude of uses for it! :)

Thank you GOTD - for becoming another happy part of my day. :) I'm off now to see what you're offering today for games....

#7, You can set up your comouter to start automatically by going into the computer's "Setup" menu, usually by tapping the F2 or F12 key while booting up. Then look for the power section and enter your time of day and specific days you want to have it startup automatically. Mine starts at 8am every day.

GOTD, I love your software choices. I think you do a good job even though I can't possibly use all the offerings or my Windows would never open! Thank you for the great job you do!

I agree with #28 answering #2. also there are plenty of free antivirus software and free spyware and free system cleaners. I use AdAware SE Personal, Avira Personal, and Spyware Search and Destroy.

Anyways, I think that this will be very useful to me because I don't like having my computer on late at night because it's in my room and makes a lot of noise when it does auto scans.

It's beyond me why anyone would need this software. Most computers can be set to either switch off or hibernate when not in use anyway and who on earth needs the volume to reduce when they're falling asleep listening to music?

In my opinion this software is nothing more than a gimmick designed to relieve some poor soles of their hard earned 20 bucks.
