Messenger, no need to go into the lengthy analysis of why some people claim that Astro Gemini's website and software are malware; I suspect that 95% of those claims are malicious, rather than due to ignorance. Astro Gemini has been offering software on GOTD for about as long as GOTD has existed. All high-quality website evaluators and anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-malware detectors indicate that Astro Gemini's website and software are clean. No one who has claimed a problem has ever posted their logs; I've posted security logs indicating no problems, and anyone can check security websites for Astro Gemini's ratings (one of which I linked in comment #62).

None of these screensavers look good at the resolution I use, which is
1680x1050. Of course, I have a 22" widescreen LCD monitor also. Doesn't mean that the screensaver sucks. Some people can't be happy even with a FREE product! Society has truly gone to HELL.
Oh well..HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY everyone :-)

Yea sorry about that. I did use an office editor I'm trying out, but for some reason when I copied and pasted here it didn't come out the way I typed it. I'll go back and to using MS Office 2003.
Again sorry for the lengthy post, but sometimes some one will come in here and post a monsoon when it’s not even a drizzle. When #13 claimed all the results his web guard gave him I had to play devil’s advocate and check it myself and I got no warning with my 3 security programs, it lead me to believe he was getting false positives and examining the page with a web info reader and saw a few possibilities why he would. I just took the time to break it down to not only him but to some others to reexamine their anti spy programs when a website like GAOTD has used this client in the pass and has given us a few screensavers from them with no problems. If 2000 people downloaded the program and only 5 people come here to complain about a problem with their anti spy program what would you think? Especially when the GAOTD team take every precaution to ensure that giveaways are virus, spyware or malware free.

"Live OneCare didn’t say a thing at it’s highest security settings; since not everyone is complaining I’d say maybe some AV software is too sensitive"

That's certainly a possibility. Another would be that Live OneCare is a piece of crap that provides approximately the same level of malware protection as SimCity.

Ever head of Formatting text? maybe you should learn to use paragraphs, or maybe, just save us some time and skip the useless text and give us the facts.

I saw your post, and thought "omg, this is sopposed to be for comments, not short novels", so take a hint and keep them short and to the point!

Maybe the word paranoid was a little too strong, but I was only using it in this case and not meaning it to apply to every web site a person might visit. A lot of people have all sorts of security programs yet don’t know how to use them to their full advantage. If I were to go by just on the results of every web page I visit then that would be almost 50% of my web surfing would be in vain to visit. Just sometimes over protection can kill a decent experience. Examining astrogemini.com web page linked above you could see where the security results come from.
Phishing: I suspect 2 results, 1st is a “post method.” Meaning it's a form sitting right there on the page and sure enough it’s the email form on the left bottom for their newsletter.
2nd is a “get method.” Meaning it is most likely hidden in a link that should take you to another page with a form to fill. Sure enough if you click on the download file button it not only pops-up the download box but also redirects your browser to another page to fill out your email for the same newsletter in case you didn’t fill out the 1st posted one. Any form you fill out even when signing into a yahoo mail account if it’s not in your web securities “trusted site list” should warn of security risk.
The spam/adware result could be from having 43 links on its page. The only pop-up on the page is the download file box when clicking on the D/L button. Also notice there are no 3rd party ads to D/L tracking cookies on you.
The virus result most likely comes from a malicious adware code in the D/L file giving you a nag box or to open your browser to upgrade or register the program which in this case should be considered malware, to annoy you to register. An example would be a site like freegamepick.com. The games are free but every time you exit the game your browser opens up and takes you to their home page. Also having a code in a program that would harvest all your other screensavers already on your computer into one list without your consent could give the same warning result.
As far as tracking cookies, what marketing website doesn’t use them? The best defense is to rid them as soon as you close your browser. Some blockers on certain yahoo pages and others won’t even allow you to click any where on their site unless you allow a cookie to be installed.
What has all this got to do with the downloading of this screen saver? Nothing unless your going to download it from astro gemini’s website. Even though they’ve been in business for over 8 years and I’m sure they like repeat sells But you’re not downloading this program from their website, you’re downloading from Wikisend.com via GAOTD To quote a post from Lee a moderator in the Giveaway forum, “The GOTD Team do scan the giveaways prior to making them available, using multiple tools, and take every precaution to ensure that giveaways are virus, spyware or malware free.”
Now has far as your Comodo screaming “System Hook” it’s doing its job like it should. Most likely resulting in a locked hook code written into the program. A Hook is nothing more than a mechanism that will allow it to spy the traffic of messages between Windows and the applications as in a register key menu. What it’s doing is reading your key strokes or mouse pasting to read the info you’re putting into the registration box allowing to change your trial version into your full version, making upgrading easier. From my learning of a “system hook” the hook code is written in the program’s dll file and when you fill in the register code what you fill in unlocks the hook and allows for the version change. If the hook code was written into a php file then the code you typed is sent to a web site which in turn sends another code back to your computer that unlocks the hook code. Either way once the hook code is unlock and gets the ok to the application it becomes dead/dormant. All above could cause false positives depending on the security program you use or how sloppy the codes are written.

Note to #60. My video card which is ATI also freezes and gives me a VPU recover warning with their screensavers recently. I have Windows XP but a Dell computer from 2004. I never noticed this before. But I believe it happened after I used a free registry cleaner. I have gone to ATI and downloaded the lastest drivers, then put the old drivers on and nothing works. I'm about ready to get a new computer so I may wait, but I'm gonna be careful with registry cleaners. I know a lot of people use CCleaner which doesn't cause problems for a free one. And I think the Astro Gemini screensaver are pretty and I actually bought two of them before getting free ones.

Funny how so many complain about screensavers without even checking them out. I've downloaded one previously, and immediately removed it.

This one, on the other hand, I found to be very smooth and pleasant. Finally, a screensaver I'll keep! Thanks GOTD!

#42,45, BNAMack, I have every right to object to the false malware claims which people frequently post here about the vendors who are kind enough to offer their products here.

Here's a comparison of firewalls, and here's the listing from the consistently top-rated firewall for Sea Voyage 3D.

Forcing max quality via my video card's drivers, the textures improved, and I noticed details of the cannons, and simulated reflections of the water off the ship's hull (a nice touch, complements the ship's reflection in the ocean). With slightly newer beta video card drivers, I still can't get useable screenshots from my Vista PC, no matter what capture software or mode, running as administrator, etc. While Vista security prevents some captures, mostly this appears to be a driver issue (for example, some screensavers' images do capture correctly, and some screensavers' captures return an apparently buffered loading screen rather than the current screen).

"If you don’t want it, don’t download it! Apparently, this simple concept is too complex for many people here. I wonder how they can even find their bedroom, let alone turn on and use their computer."

And, of course, they'll know if they like it or not before trying it out. That makes so much sense! Why do downloadable games have free demos anyway? A few dodgy screenshots and a product blurb are the best way to form your opinon!

"If you don’t want a screensaver, then check back tomorrow to see what GAOTD is giving away. Yes, that’s right. It’s FREE. You pathetic self-centred twits are complaining about a free gift. No one, I repeat NO ONE, owes you anything here. Every day, a free programme is made available. If you want to try it, then try it. If you don’t want it, then stop behaving like a crybaby and go away until the next free file is available. Better yet, just go away."

Whine whine check back tomorrow whine whine pathetic self-centered twits whine whine NO ONE owes you anything whine whine go away!

"I have no idea how the people who run GAOTD can stand it after so many ungrateful, rude knobs keep demonstrating publicly their total lack of social skills. They clearly never leave their bedrooms because behaviour like that in public will always result in a punch in the nose or a kick in the rear end."

You do realize that that statement is a grade-A flame. Is a "total lack of social skills" a prerequisite for showing dislike? Read a few reviews of Battlefield Earth and tell me.

"Apologies to the decent people here who appreciate the opportunity of trying free software, but at least now the crybabies will flame me and forget to post their nonsense about a programme they aren’t using"

Well, you're right - I'm not using this program. I'm not defending my opinion of it, though - I'm defending the opinions of other people. Note also that I'm not posting any "nonsense" about the program itself. The only person who's flamed anyone so far is you.

"— and since I never come back to read their flames, they’re wasting their time doing that, too. :-))"

Kids, this is the perfect way to win an argument. Say that the other guy is wrong, and that he's a jerk if he disagrees with you, then cover your ears and walk away.

Okay, On one hand, I'm sick of overpriced crud, and have many of the old complaints. ignoring those for now though, Could someone suggest some screensavers (individually packed or a bunch together) that correct the main problems with the 3d screensaver series. XP has a decent selection built in, but that feels pretty limiting.
CPU light. this means little 3d, and nothing running in the background slowing anything that's already being worked on, video/audio format conversion, etc.
Actaully saving screens. this means at least some of the time, any given pixel goes black. My friend's daughter once installed a the little mermaid screensaver. it was Ariel sitting on a rock, slightly twitching occationally. the screen was ruined in days.
Free. This means no strings attached, not even hidden ones, .scr files are easily exploitable.

I like screen savers, use one all the time. Don't to much care about the wear and tear on my 20" LCD because I have a big warranty with Dell. But these are poor in comparison to those by Serene Scene for example. The the good ones don't install a screen saver manager or adds of any type. They also have an option to disable monitor sleep mode.
I've tried several by this publisher & 3 plane soft but found none that impressed me at all. I won't get into another's preferences but this is a definite thumbs down for me. Adds are adds any way you look at it. Missing options that I like in a screen saver only serve to increase my dislike of these cartoon like offerings.

Nice piece of software but not usable on my muti-monitor system. As more and more people are using more than one monitor, I think multi-monitor options should be on all screensavers by now. Tried it, don't work, dumped it. Thanks anyways.

This is a very nice screensaver. I would just ask those that are voting thumbs down automaticly to give it a try before you vote. I get it. Some people hate screensavers. I hate certain apps too but I don't trash programs because I don't like them. Maybe you can do the same. We all know screensavers are no longer needed. That is not the point. Screensavers today are meant to be about having fun. You do know what having fun means don't you? Astro Gemini is not perfect but their programs are not that bad. All I ask is to try it before you vote. Feel free to give me as many thumbs down as you wish. That does not concern me. Anyway thank you so much to the GAOTD team for another great program. Thank you to Astro Gemini for another great offering.

Grabbing this one for my wife, I found most all of the comments right on the money... The Sea Voyage 3D Screensaver has nice graphics if you’re not looking for anything like the latest games - I think the requirements said something like it uses DX 8 - so if you’re into hard core 3D I don’t imagine you’d be happy. I used the slow but free InstallWatch Pro to record any & all changes (a lesson learned the other day with Multiset when the site went down); install & uninstall are both pretty well behaved, but like the last Astro-Gemini Screensaver, in Vista at least you’re left with a few files in the Prefetch folder along with the Astro Gemini folder in \Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\

As far as commenting on screensavers themselves, I figure (& no offense intended) just about everyone has their indulgences, be it food or clothing or toys or whatever, so if you like screensavers have a blast.

As far as paranoia goes, Live OneCare didn’t say a thing at it’s highest security settings; since not everyone is complaining I’d say maybe some AV software is too sensitive. If it helps, malicious websites do exist, but you can always use Google to check a site out - I don’t think ZDNet would list all of those Astro Gemini downloads for example if they were a known problem.

I have never figured out screensavers. They are a program that is designed to run hen your computer is idle.If it is idlw,I am not near it to see the screensaver in operation,so I wouldn't benefit from what ever is on the screen to begin with.To me screensavers,"does not compute"
If you want to save your screen....turn it off.

Ohhh, i don't like screen savers, expect one: dark screen.

For all who want's only a drak screen saver on follow this steps:
Win2000:
Desktop: risht click -> Properties
Go to Screen Saver
selecht 3D Text
than settings -> Display: select Text,
put one or more spaces in the Textfiels no letter or other sign

Press ok an than appy, test it with Preview.

WinXP:

Same sa on WIn 2000, but the trick with tha space don't work anymore!
So you have to type some text inside, for example a litte "." ( smooth -> select one collor, black.

press ok , apply, and see with Preview a black screen.

Well I downloaded it since I don't usually get any other software here much. When I did try those unknown registry cleaners, my computer hasn't worked well ever since, and you almost need a reformat which loses all the free software, so I'm not trying any really unknow utilities anymore. I do try games I like.

To #13 & 27 - let them call you paranoid if they want. If more of my customers were paranoid like you, less of my time would be spent repairing the aftereffects of a worm or trojan.

To #19 - well then I guess my Comodo products must be crap, too. They scream "System Hook!!" when I tried to install. Why would any screensaver need a system hook to work? Answer: they shouldn't.

To #20 - what poor form to attack someone who is trying to offer a genuiune warning to folks based on what they experienced, just because you disagree. I'm a fan of GAOTD, but have found some dodgy offerings. It's *always* a good idea to be careful, even a little paranoid. I've read enough comments on this site to know there are a lot of sandbox-program users who will probably agree with me.

And folks - you really can disagree with someone without attacking them. Really.

You seem to be one of the few that understand tha there is only a finite amount of cpu power on this planet, and at current usage rates, the planet will have used it up by the year 2087.

And to all complaining about the screensaver giveaways, I can't seem to vind anything on the GAOTD web site requiring me to bownload is.

As one who is a screen saver nut, this one is as lousy as they come. New machine (one month old), more ram then needed by a 64 bit OS, core duo 2.66 chip, G-Force 8800 GT video card and it's still as lousy as they come.
I just happened to do some house cleaning yesterday in my downloads folder. Astro Gemini was one of the folders I deleted. Rather ironic isn't it. Not even considering the screen saver manager that accompanies Astro Gemini, pass with a thumbs down.

If you don't want it, then stop behaving like a crybaby and go away until the next free file is available. Better yet, just go away.

I have no idea how the people who run GAOTD can stand it after so many ungrateful, rude knobs keep demonstrating publicly their total lack of social skills. They clearly never leave their bedrooms because behaviour like that in public will always result in a punch in the nose or a kick in the rear end.

Apologies to the decent people here who appreciate the opportunity of trying free software, but at least now the crybabies will flame me and forget to post their nonsense about a programme they aren't using -- and since I never come back to read their flames, they're wasting their time doing that, too. :-))

One big mistake on this program..Magellan was not the first person to circumnavigate the earth. It was the Chinese that first sailed around the earth back in 1421. I'll pass this one but thanks anyway for all the other nice programs.

#19 These are not false positives. They are genuine alerts and should be taken seriously. SpyBot/TeaTimer works extremely well at detecting and STOPPING malicious software from getting to the executable stage. You have no clue as to internet security - hush.
