@ Fever Yes, I'm running Vista. Got that error when trying to install several programs. An Adobe add on, some kind of Java, an email program and Yahoo IM are ones I remember.

Great to see Ashraf back. First comment I read and Bingo! What a relief. I have visited your page though. As for today's software I won't downloaded and stick to my WinUtilities that I like amd may also try CCleaner instead.

The "fixed" page still stops you from leaving with 3 pop-ups.

I tried to page back so I could come back here, and the tab was locked up by their scripts.

A Web site that holds you hostage until you chat with a salesman? Would anyone here knowingly go into a brick-and-mortar store that locked the door behind you and wouldn't let you leave until you talked to a salesperson? Decent people operating a legitimate business would never do anything like that.

I went to Robtex to check on this outfit. The results aren't the least bit reassuring.

Here's the link for Robtex's findings summary.

Here's a brief excerpt from that summary: "Trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy and child safety of this site is poor"

Here's a link to the WOT site behind what that excerpt said. It's a place where users can report their experiences with various Web sites and businesses. Comments there aren't all bad, but "phishing or other scams" is mentioned repeatedly.

I like to try free software as much as the next person. But sometimes the price of even free software is too high.

FWIW, I have tried three different registry cleaner/tuneup programs, including CC Cleaner, over the last 8 years or so, on four or five PC's. I followed directions and used them conservatively. Even so, whether on first, second or third use, every one of them ended up making me wish I had never used it. So, I'm not inclined to want to try another one.

I ran the registry cleaner of CCleaner yesterday. Today I ran the registry cleaner of this program which found 887 problems which I fixed. Both of these programs have a backup feature in case something gets deleted that shouldn't be.

I believe this program to be another great giveaway of it's type.

I've purchased some great programs from 3B Software in the past.

First of all welcome back Ashraf. I hope you had a great vacation.
I missed your reviews. As for registry cleaners I use reliable ones daily.Such as in Glary and winutilities or Ashampoo's Winoptimizer.
These all to seem to work fine and have not created any problems or registry issues yet. I will shy away from this one. Since I see a comment with over 1180 registry problems repaired.I think this is scareware and do not believe that many registry problems really ever existed. This is my opinion only and it is possible to have that many registry errors or more, but seems a little too high from my experience.

"I am deeply sorry, someone uploaded a very old landing page on the website. I have corrected this issue and the most current landing page is on the site"

There is no excuse for not having an exit (close) button on your web page...
BTW, your OK key on the registration is blanked out and therefore it will not accept the given reg key in the readme.txt file.

For anyone having trouble exiting the web site, use the old "ALT F4" key to close the page.

why does g.o.t.d. resort to this kind of garbage?
what is the sort of kickback received by g.o.t.d. to peddle this shit to us?
does g.o.t.d. get their jollies off by seeing the amount of negative votes and comments posted by this crap?
that seems to be the norm i've noticed on this sorry-assed site for the past 2 years: post some spyware, wormware riddled software by THE SAME developers and manufacturers from god knows whatever obscure section of China or Russia or Afghanisthan they're from over and over again and rely on the public's ignorance of the fact that we may forget it was offered before and was still a piece of shit then as it is now...
as i said before...this is a sorry-assed site...but i enjoyed watching and reading the comments posted by the zeroes who persist on using and downloading the garbage offered here.

Ok guys, just one thing I want to share with you, Win 7 registry is NOT similar as XP, and it doesn't need a lot of "cleaning" by some registry cleaners. Just leave the registry alone, its better to have few images of your system partition or whole computer then "clean" the registry. One last thing, if you really want to use something, use CCleaner, I can tell you that if there is something called "reliable" registry cleaner, that would be CCleaner. And yes, having an image/s is a lot better then run some registry cleaner. You installed your OS, made an image after installing software, drivers and all that, and you are good to go. That's the best solution for viruses, registries and everything else that can go wrong with your system. Ask yourself how much time you are spending on scanning, "cleaning" and all that, and compare that with re imaging system partition. Q: How can you be sure that everything is fine after scanning, cleaning? You can't. so, my advice is, image, image, image
Freeware that can make your PC life much easier:

very simple question:

your machine running fine? - Don't bother!

you hungry? EAT!

It is a sick tendency of the 'industry' to first create a demand and then fill it.

But - go ahead... ask yourself something like 'what could I possibly need?' - THEY will surely have an answer for you.

I'll pass on this crap. Save my disk space for useful apps.

I bought the 4.0.0. version many years ago (5 years?) and have used it regularly. The program does clean the registry rather efficiently and has never caused any errors to my knowledge. On the negative side: no support and a horrible website.
I would download the program if I did not already own it.

I've purchase software from 3B Software before I became wary of such software. One of the programs was advertised as being upgraded regularily, so I purchased it as it seemed to be exactly what I wanted. It's never been updated to my knowlege. I've written to 3B on a couple of occassions querying this statement and asking when the software was going to be updated, but I never received any replies. Once bitten, Twice shy.

I want to thank all of you who post comments here because it really helps to know what's good or bad or what problems may occur with the GOTD offerings. I copy and paste many of the comments to Wordpad to refer back to (I eliminate posters' names). That way, for the programs that I download, I have the info as to what the program can or cannot do and any problems. Also, regardless of whether or not I download the program, I have the comments that suggest other freeware or shareware that may be just as good or better than the program being offered. Welcome back, Ashraf...you have been missed. Thank you, GOTD, for offering the downloads and providing the comment section.

I've been using Registery Repair Pro on my XP computer since 2005, never had a problem with it. Yes, you have to know what your doing with any software that edits the registery. If you make a mistake, you can always undo your changes. It also gives you the choice to delete, or do nothing on each line item. RRP along with HijackThis has kept my computers running smoothly. I'm satisfied with the program.

MOVE AWAY FROM THE DOWNLOAD!!! Force installs 3 programs - Regrepair Pro, MSN Toolbar, MS and Silverlight, plus desktop internet shortcuts for "deals". Plus running Regrepair Pro the 1st time takes you to their website for a forced "Buy This Software" window before the program will run.
Decided to remove all of above. I used Revo Uninstaller, Sartup Manager, System Care Pro, CCleaner, Windows 7 Manager, Auslogics Registry Cleaner, Glary Utilities and finally Unlocker and there were STILL multiple programs running and undeletable. Finally had to return to a restore point prior to the Regrepair Pro installation. Huge waste of time.

Another free alternative that I've been happy with is AML Registry Cleaner. http://www.amltools.com.
I manually clean the registry to remove specific leftovers from uninstalls, but this program combined with ccleaner seems to do the best job overall. I haven't had either tool remove unnecessary items.

#1: "... /rant over ..."

Not at all... not a rant I mean, Ashraf.

I hit their site right off, closed Firefox to get away from the persistent pop-ups when I tried to close that tab, & figured today's GOTD was a write-off, i.e. who was going to bother? Today was one of the few times I checked back later (mainly because I needed a chuckle & figured I'd see all sorts of scathing commentary)... I was wrong. I mean there are quite a few negative comments, but not what I imagined.

So, FWIW & in case it helps &/or interests...
Registry Repair Pro comes in at ~5.75MB, & assuming you don't run "ARMSetup_3B_BBO_NO.exe" [(c) 2005 Macrovision] included in setup.exe, installation shouldn't bother Windows much, with no files added to system folders & Registry Repair Pro's update app ["wcomupd.exe"] the only file registered with Windows... by comparison the portable CCleaner is <2MB, requires downloading & unzipping, & optionally deleting the Language folder &/or adding a shortcut. Registry Repair Pro's backup suffers from the same design fault as most ERUNT alternatives -- the app runs in Windows, so if Windows won't start what do you do? Defragging the registry is cool, but it sounds like more than it is... ERUNT comes with a defragger [NTREGOPT] that copies the registry files to new one, without the *white space*, then swaps them out on re-boot.

Now registry cleaners &/or optimizers aren't magic -- they look for dead links [that's 'bout all they can do], look for whatever common problem entries [basically matching a list compiled by the developer(s)], & may have options to change default Windows registry entries/settings to values that *may* benefit individual home users more than the factory, one-size-fits-all approach. Usually the last 2 are pretty safe, since they're based on on-line feedback from however many users [think of the many Windows Tips/Tricks sites]. The 1st one may result in you staring at a black screen uttering epithets, or not... it's a matter of what you have had installed. Registry cleaning apps vary in the lists of entries they try to match, any lists of optimizations, & in how they attempt to filter out false positives, & in how well that filtering works out.

Windows registry has all sort of entries like this: "{00BB2764-6A77-11D0-A535-00C04FD7D062}", with/without the brackets, & they normally are treated like declared variables [or aliases, or shortcuts if you prefer]... rather than use that key's value: "Microsoft History AutoComplete List", other key's/values in the registry will use that long number. Simplified, registry cleaners look for things like entries referring to those long numbers that are missing definitions, similar to a variable without value, or a shortcut without a target. Problem... not every app uses shortcuts with targets -- sometimes it's enough to have what might look like a shortcut [i.e. something like {AAE88A33-9A83-4A5E-B6D4-CC757954B06E}] listed by itself. If you were to delete that key, the app that needs it might not work properly. If the app is something Windows needs to run, say has something to do with a driver, Windows won't.

So why bother?... Sometimes it's just a matter of luck, where the program you break just happens to be the one giving you problems -- that might also happen with leftovers from an un-installed app. On the whole, the smaller the registry files, the faster they are to read, though be aware it takes deleting an awful lot of entries to reduce the size enough to really notice. And then there's the very human factor -- some people just like a well organized closet more than others, regardless it holds about the same amount whether the contents are carefully arranged or just crammed/tossed in there. I highly doubt there'd be so many registry cleaners if some people didn't get satisfaction from cleaning out alleged garbage -- it's similar to the undeserved popularity of some A/V software based on how many false positives it generates. ;-)

I went to their website and saw a lot of javascript that a company that cares about the customers safety shouldn't be using.

Don't download this. Use CCleaner instead. It fixes the registry, temp files and cookies. Just what most people need to keep the computer nice and fresh. I have tried many registry cleaning software and after a while they end up bricking the registry. I have been using CCleaner for about 3 years and have NEVER had any problems with it. It also creates backups of the registry entries it deletes incase something goes wrong.

Some extra points today's GAOTD includes registry backup, and a registry defrag tool. By default, it does not select any system related registry entries, needing manual selection for any items that deleting might or could cause problems!

For non-experts (ie most of us!) simply do not tick any items needing to be selected manually, just make do with cleaning those selected automatically as OK to delete!

I would MUCH prefer using a registry cleaner than having to routinely re-install Windows AND all of my programs, not forgetting losing all giveaways!

I just have to join the chorus here and welcome back Ashraf from his well-deserved break. Ashraf's reviews are indeed helpful and insightful.

However, I also have to throw in that there are many who participate in this forum who merit the same high respect. I have been monitoring this site on a daily basis for about six months now, and although I've reaped a harvest of many fine programs, I honestly think the biggest benefit I've found has come from reading everyone's feedback, especially from those who clearly go the extra mile to share their knowledge and to help those of us who are working to get there ourselves. I have learned a great deal through this website.

Thanks to ALL who participate, your efforts are always appreciated. And, of course, many thanks to the good folks running this wonderful website.

With all that said, I'd have to agree, today's offering is probably one to pass on.

>All registry cleaners, legit or not, are NEVER worth the risk.

Not so, I'd disagree with this, however always make a registry backup before using one. ERUNT is a free one thats pretty good, or do a system point. Cleaning up your registry can improve the speed of your machine and reduce the number of system errors if done well.

Ive used a number of registry optimizers and had various experience with them, theres few good ones. jv16 powertools was probably the best professional one, but you seriously need to know what you are doing with it and I'd definately not recommend it to beginners, as deleting some registry settings can seriously mess up you computer (hence make a backup)

TuneUp Utilities is pretty comprehensive and Ive never had trouble with it and would recommend this for people who dont know much about registries as its fairly safe. Use the Clean registry under maintain system and not the 1 click maintenance though. DONT use its defragment registry or internet optimzer functions though - they are not good and the internet optimzer actually made it slower.

There are several good free registry cleaners that I use and like:

CCleaner

Wise Registry Cleaner

Reg Scrub Vista XP

It is a good idea to have more than one because each one can find some unnecessary entries that the others miss.

None of these are promoted using the scare tactics found on the website of Registry Repair Pro.

In response to #31: First I have used registry cleaners for years and have never once had any problems caused by their use. I have also on occasion have observed significant, (ie. noticeable) boosts in system performance. Not always but enough to convince me that a)Legitimate registry cleaners can have a positive effect and b)Rarely if ever cause problems. In response to your two points: I for one download and try new software; that is why I come here so in my case at least having a "ROCK SOLID" system is not an option. Second, yes I suppose I could restore my system by using a disk image but that is usually more time consuming than using the appropriate system utilities. I do back up my system(s) but only in case of a major disaster/problem. Today's offering does raise concerns because of the Web site practices of the developer so I'm passing. I do respect the opinions of those who are opposed to using such utilities but until I actually experience a problem I'm going to continue using one. If I do experience a problem I always have my back up image ready to go. Regards
