Hello Linda (154), Robo (155) and others, please contact us if your computer has accidentally lost RecentX registration information and is asking for the registration code.

Thanks.

My computer shut down and now after having worked for 3 wks the program is giving the message that it is a trial version and will expire in 13 days if I do not register it. It was registered under GAOTD prior to the shut down.

This is quite disappointing. I have found the software quite helpful at times.

I just had to run a check disk and defrag and when I did the recent X application asked me for a key or buy now because trial expired. I did NOT reload my computer and nothing changed. I'm upset.....

Can someone help?

RecentX does not work for the files with CJK characters in their names, if the system locale is set in English.

Shame. I thought I this application was pretty good.

Quite Good, actually.
Used on both work and home systems, it is a fairly light memory (2-9 MB) user, comes in handy as you generally re-use latest things rather than dig up old stuff. where desktop search or google desktop is more relevant.
What I would change is a web surfing anonymity option, I would like it easier to control either to collect or not web history.
Summary - I do recommend this, it is quite a good written and focused application, which in turn makes you a faster PC player, and in today's world. speed is everything. It is well worth the extra 20$.
When free, it a grabber.

#144, Gautam Jain, I have nothing against RecentX, but it's not functioning correctly on my Vista PC (and people voting down my honest comments aren't going to cause it to start working correctly). For the way I work, it's still superfluous.

I rarely use Internet History and Favorites. Google Toolbar searches past local queries and queries from all Google users as you type. If you previously used a query which is a domain ending in .com, or it shows up in the global list, selecting that will load the site directly, without loading a Google search page. So I usually only need to type a couple of characters to get directly to frequently-accessed sites. I rarely need to search Internet History. The Vista Windows Start Search does it automatically. IE7 can list the History by order visited in the current day. Leading-character search is always active (standard almost everywhere in Windows and Microsoft products), even without a search box. The History can be pinned. Google Internet History (if you use a Google account, and always log in the Google Toolbar) can also be searched.

As far as recent folders, as I stated, in Vista, one would normally just use the drop-down recent folders and locations list, which is global (file drop-downs are local to each application). Additionally, Vista has various forms of automatic file and folder tracking. In a standard Vista file open or save dialog box, the first thing to remember is that the file type selection filters all other information in the dialog box. If you expand the dialog box to show folders, Recent Places is a list of recently used folders, which you can sort by date modified (normally, you would just use the previous-locations drop-down, instead). Recently Changed is also available, as are Searches, which contains Everywhere, Indexed Locations, Recent Documents, Recent E-Mail, Recent Music, Recent Pictures and Videos, Recently Changed, and Shared by Me. I find Indexed Locations to be the most useful, and the closest to what I expect (some don't return what I expect). Naturally, it can be sorted by date, and both forms of search are active within it. The list is like a combination of all of the RecentX tabs. In fact, when RecentX crashed, the RecentX data folder and crash dump files were at the top of the list (when sorted by date), as expected.

#144, Gautam Jain, I'm glad that you're responding, but you failed to respond to any of the problems which I encountered: long delays, failure to see executables, problems with using time of last access to sort web links/history.

As for tracking folders automatically, not only do many applications do that, but in Vista, one can easily select folders in file-open and file-save dialog boxes (via context-sensitive auto drop-down lists), as well as using a drop-down list of previously-accessed folders. Vista also has searching within the file list, via two different methods. The Search field uses the Windows Search index (within the current folder), and typing while the files pane has the focus uses the long-standing Explorer leading-string search.

With natural-language searching turned on in Vista, one can simply enter a subfolder name (sometimes it needs to be within quotes), followed by the word "folder", in the Start (Windows) button Search field, and Windows Search will find that folder and its subfolders, directly. Similarly, Start Search will search Favorites and History. Further, unlike RecentX, Start Search and IE7 will display icons associated with web pages.

I don't currently use Google Desktop. The Google Toolbar only searches Internet queries and the user's Internet History, as the user types.

From the desktop of Conceptworld (author of RecentX)

Dear Fubar (Comment 143),

You really need to let RecentX run for few days on your computer to know its worth. RecentX complements the other programs that you listed. It is not a competitor. Many amazing things that RecentX can do, no other programs (from you list) can do.

In order to see history, you will need to launch IE7, click on History button, click on search edit box, type some keywords in order to find an history item. And if you are using both IE7 and Firefox, you may not even remember which browser you used to browse which sites. So you will have to repeat this for two browsers. This is a long process.

With RecentX, you just click once and type your history url keywords.

Google Desktop is very good. But it searches inside the documents also. You end up with too many results that open in Internet Browser. Which is very inconvenient.

With RecentX, you just click once and type any part of the file name or url. It's right there.

No programs that are listed above can track folders automatically. RecentX saves so much time directly jumping to the folder.

Regards,
Gautam Jain

RecentX performs very poorly on my Windows Vista PC. There can be very substantial delays (minutes) before its lists update. It almost never sees programs, even when set to run as an administrator. Windows and various other utilities have no problems seeing what goes on, immediately. It uses time of last access for web history, which is a disaster. Links get accessed for all sorts of reasons, such as by the Windows indexing service.

In truth, I don't know why people get so excited by these types of applications, they always perform very poorly for me (even on different hardware, different OS, different security software), and duplicate functionality which is already present. IE7 has better history organization, display, and searching. Google Toolbar beta is generally better, although it sometimes gets the page titles wrong. Vista has quick folder selection in file-open and -save dialog boxes. Most applications remember last- and recently-used files and folders. Windows Explorer easily sorts by date (works better in Vista). Quick access to programs and folders is available by numerous methods. Leading-character search works almost everywhere in Windows, and Explorer (and to some extent, MCE) support leading-string search. Windows Search works well for both simple searches and complex searches (depending upon your hardware).

If RecentX works for you, great, but it simply isn't functioning worth beans on my Vista PC.

#123 - what bs? There were a lot of PO'd people here yesterday - and the official word from GAOTD was... nothing. FACTS, not soapbox. This whole give away concept is based on trust. We trust them, they provide (mostly) access to good software, we keep coming back, and on it goes. I NEVER said GAOTD was at fault for the non-registering software - but I do fault them for not saying anything officially. Just an acknowledgement of all the posts, and that they knew there was a problem - would have been welcome. That's it from me about it.

I want to add: I think that this program is worth $20. It is very good. But I would not be willing to pay more. Other good search programs will come along with low prices and fast performance.

I still use Alta Vista Personal Desktop Search on some partitions. It is very fast (faster than the other programs listed above). But the size of the index it generates can take up enormous space and needs to be deleted occasionally and begin with a new "index rebuild"

#25 Google Desktop Search, Windows Desktop Search, X-1 Desktop Search and the rest of the search engines in their class do NOT store their indexes in memory. Their indexes are written to the hard drive.

Presently, Google Desktop, Windows Desktop, and X-1 Desktop search programs take over 1-GB each on my hard drive to store their indexes. With today's GOTD offer I am going to drop Google and Windows.

Search GT and Recent X will join X-1 on my computer. Each of the three search programs offer features unique to themselves.

I downloaded and installed without trouble, but Winpatrol intercepted a change in my startup entries. While this is usually harmless, I wanted to deny the change and run RecentX manually until I trusted it (even if it might cripple the functionality). I denied the change, but the program didn't give up trying to change my settings. It tried again and again, even after I closed the program. It even tried again just as I was about to uninstall it. Not all components were successfully uninstalled either. I'm not saying RecentX is spyware or anything. It looked good. I just want to be in control of my PC startups.

I've just installed this program and have just begun to play with it. I think I'm going to like it a lot.

But, ConceptWorld developers, one thing I REALLY don't like is NOT having a way to remove some of the indexed items. For instance it indexed a readme file in Spanish for a program I installed a few days ago. I can read Spanish, but I have no need to have that file indexed. I never accessed it; I just installed the program that it came with. I DID access the English version of the readme file. There are a lot of other files and folders that I don't want indexed because they're just cluttering up the list and I might never need to access them again--or only rarely. Please give us a way to remove those from the lists.

Also it indexed a folder that it claims I accessed 10 minutes ago. I didn't. So why would it index it with today's date and that time? In fact, I doubt that I've accessed it in the last 2 weeks.

Thanks, GAOTD and ConceptWorld for this offering. It looks like a winner for me.

#89 The same thing happened to me. I got a .dmp file just after GAOTD activated and at the same time the name GAOTD and the key in the readme appeared on a GAOTD screen. It said there was a problem and asked me if I wanted to save the .dmp file to send to Conceptworld. I clicked OK. Then received a message from Vista Home Premium saying it was closing RecentX and sending a report to Windows. I then opened RecentX again and clicked on the register icon and used the name and key from the readme and got a message from Conceptworld that RecentX was now registered. The register icon then disappeared from the program. I think, and I would like Conceptworld to comment on this, that when GAOTD activated it, mistakenly the registration name and key went automatically to GAOTD and Conceptworld or Vista Home Premium or the Firewall created a .dmp file as security. Please comment on this.

RecentX is a very fast search function worth having on your desktop. It does not use any noticeable resources. If it is noticeable , i would be surprised. Maybe more to do with antiquated hardware/software.
It doesnt "Index" like Google Desktop or Copernic, as these two programs search and index all info "within" the files. RecentX and SearchGT, simply provide a fast and more efficient seach alternative to Windows Explorer, and they do their Job at Lightning speed.
The Obvious thing to do is keep both your favorite Index Program and RecentX, as they both serve their purposes.

I like this program - sharp looks and ease of operation. Installed right away with no problems. (Win xp sp2) They even included the reg. code in the rewad me file! How cool is that! What a huge, positive difference after that lame non-registration program yesterday.

To GAOTD: Why haven't you said anything "officially" concerning yesterdays disaster? An official acknowledgement would go a long way to sooth some angry subscribers. But you have officially said nothing (reminds me of the US Govt. sometimes), and by your silence perhaps you hope the whole mess will just go away, or we'll forget about it. I really like GAOTD, but your silence (arrogance?) is almost as annoying as the sorry event itself. JMO

The program runs fine on both. I suggest checking yours for whatever the heck is causing your problems. It is in no way, this program.
Please, do us all a favor and email the company. I can guarantee for a fact, they will answer as promptly as possible. #94 I have installed on Win XP Pro SP2, Win XP Media Center SP2 AND Win Vista Home Premium and have had no problems on any of them. Have you recently run a checkdisk on your boot drive? Sometimes when you computer shuts down abnormally, it can leave corrupted files which, in turn, can cause other programs to have difficulties. Just a thought. In case you want to do it, I will also post this info on the forums under Ideas to keep your computer running well.

I have now attempted installing this program on 4 different computers.
FOUR!!!
3 were Vista Home Premium and the last one was XP HE. The only one that worked right was the XP version. Anyone who says this works on Vista is either
a) NOT USING 32-bit HOME PREMIUM (check your versions again people)
or
b) is full of it.
This program does not work in Vista and was not intended to work in Vista.
The developer should really take a look at their own programs and sort all the problems out before actually trying to market this garbage for any kind of profit.

#95--Thanks for the info on Fixit--I was "fixin'" to switch to it from System Mechanic 6 (which trashed my "privacy"/download white-list in ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7 without giving me any opt-out), but now I guess I'll have to think again. I don't want to switch from ZASS, since I'm very happy with it, but I'm definitely not so happy with SM6. I understand that SM7 is out, but this aspect of it is not something that I have seen mentioned by any software reviews. Maybe I've missed references to deleting the user's whitelist, and if so I'm sure someone will tell me where to find it. As to RecentX, I have to ask do I need a new program to do what XP/Vista already does?
