Third times a charm, right? Not in this case. I was really hoping to get the key code so I could compare it side by side with a program I've been using, for years. But I think I've learned enough with the "Folder Marker FREE" to make a fair assessment.

I've been using "FolderMagic" by Cloudeight, for many years now. It's a 15-day trial, but once the trial is over the program still functions. If you know how to manipulate "Application Data" folders aka "AppData" in 7,8, & 10 you can add your own Icons that you've made yourself or downloaded, as long as they're in .ico format. If you like the icons they have it will cost you less than half the cost of "Folder Marker".

Try it; what have you got to lose; it's essentially FREE unless you want to use their Icons and then it doesn't cost that much to upgrade. I don't know of another "folder icon or color" program that is better. Yeah, you can color folders too, with any color in the rainbow or not in the rainbow.

JonE,

I agree Folder Magic is a great icon changer, but it, like most of the others, does not have an option to include all sub-folders in the list to change. Thankfully, Folder Magic does allow selecting a range of folders at the same level, but even when expanded in the Folders view window, sub-folders are not included in the selection, and thus not changed.

Gary, I dunno, I always considered "Rainbow Folders" to be FREE; I never really considered a postcard to be substantial enough cost to consider it not FREE, although I suppose in that sense it does cost something. (From your comment below) "Rainbow Folders" was the first folder coloriztion program I ever used way back when on my "98 se" machine.

But, I've been using "Folder Magic" for a lot of years; can't beat the cost or the flexibility and that flexibility is built into the program, but I hardly ever use that to add new icons. I mainly use "Folder Magic" to turn folders into looking like icons. I've used it to color some folders, but not much. Each to his own; I've never seen a need to colorize or turn folders into icons except for the main folder, but I can see how that would be convenient for anyone who would want to colorize all sub folders, as well.

The program installer crashes during install. The home version from the website will not work with emailed keys either.
I guess this 24 hours is a loss.
This is the first time I've had this problem, so I'm pointing at the program for this go around.

I guess I'm not the only one having problems getting the key code email. Tried a second time just in case I entered something incorrectly for my email and made double sure everything was correct and still no email.

Not impressed with a lot of the gotd downloads.
Every time I try a download and it has the setup.gcd file included it will not install on my computer so I can't use it. Folder Maker Home is not the first one that doesn't install. There are at least six other programs I wanted to try that this has happened to

Jim, Try disabling your security program before attempting to install. While Windows Defender will generally let things pass, some of the third-party programs will not. I use Zemana and have that problem whenever there is a .gcd file. I just shut it off before attempting to install and that takes care of the problem.

Edward,
Thank you for your suggestion. I will surely try it.
Like Jim, almost 50% of GAOTD programs now a days DO NOT INSTALL. It would say 'installed' but nothing is installed!
I have written about it several times and many others have too. Disappointing that there is no help from GAOTD on this issue.

Edward, Thank you never even thought about the security program causing the problem. I got it installed.

After looking at their webpage, 'Comparison of Folder Marker Editions' http://foldermarker.com/en/compare-versions/ Made me wonder why they're giving away 'Home' edition & not the 'Pro' version? I thought when a company puts their product on GAOTD they usually give the high-end version to make a better impression? There is also a free version also available to those who are interested.

Dan, and also, this is an, at least, 2015 version of the program.

Mario Trzes, the timestamp on the installer says August 22, 2013. That is the current version, though; there's nothing newer on their website.

Not needed as Folder Colorizer does the exact same thing and is Freeware.
This nice program comes from: thewindowsclub

From what I can see "Folder Colorizer" only colors a folder; correct me if I'm wrong. "Folder Marker Home" does way more than colorize. I've been using a program, for years, titled "FolderMagic" by "Cloudeight". It does more than both "Folder Colorizer" and "Folder Marker" Home or Pro.

Reply   |   Comment by JonE  –  6 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

bruce,

Actually, Folder Colorizer does NOT do the "exact" same thing. It is one of many utilities that does color folders but it (like most) does one at a time. Some Folder icon programs allow the user to select multiple folders, then do the "apply" to all (including the "free" edition of Folder Marker). Folder Marker Home allows the user to specify a folder, and include the subfolders under that folder. That can be very handy obviously, as opposed to having to select one after another working your way down and up the directory tree to include them all.

The one problem I have with this feature of Folder Marker Home is that when it starts to make changes to a folder with lots of subfolders, it sometimes fails to complete the task. I have found that Rainbow Folders does a better job with subfolders; it is not free though; it is Postcardware.

By the way, Windows Club also has a tutorial on Folder Marker (version 3.0 era) at http://forum.thewindowsclub.com/windows-tips-tutorials-articles/22395-color-your-vista-folders-folder-marker.html, which has a link to Folder Marker Free edition and Trial edition.

You can also get the Free edition of Folder Marker for a good comparison to Folder Colorizer.

I read comments of other not receiving their e-mail every day, but I never miss one, except for today. I suspect the problem is on the Folder Marker end.

There are many more folder icon changing programs, but Folder Marker Home and Pro does have the potential to be at the top, if only they would send their license key e-mails.
