For those who having problems with inserting the licence code:

The first part of the code consist of 6 letters, but only gives you 5 when pasted !
Put the left arrow back to the first letter, and then move the 5 letters to the left, and then add the missing letter, and wupti you're done. Worked for me.

I just tried it on four portrait shots and I'm impressed. Three of them were noticeably improved and the fourth turned out to be a bit of a judgment call. I'm not sure I liked what it did to skin tones in this one picture. The first three, however are winners.

The German instructions are a bit of a challenge but with Google German/English translation, it worked out.

Quick question: As soon as I registered it (which was easy and fast, btw), they notified me that an update is available. Does anyone know if updating it will de-register the giveaway program? Thanks for any help!

I'm answering my own question. Installing the update did NOT change anything about the permanent registration. Thanks so much, Engelmann!

This was a laborious installation compared to most but as long as you don't miss a step it works well. The program itself works very well. I tried a dozen or so old (from actual stand\a alone cameras not cell phones) and new photos - all of which I had been quite pleased with and every single one, whether an outdoor, indoor, unusual lighting sources or night shot were improved by this program. That alone makes it worth the time and if I continue to use it I will likely end up buying it. No matter how pleased I was with my photos before - and I was actually - this program improved each one - from a wee bit to a noteworthy degree.

So far this one is a winner!

The program is "Simple," I will give you that, perhaps too simple. I have tried it on a number of pictures that needed improvement and discovered it did very little improvement to them. I am very sad to say this. I have used the program Irfanview for almost 20 years and while it does have it flaws and limitations, it is infinity better, more diverse and more comprehensive program for improving pictures than this one.

You would think someone would get wise to the fact that one never receives a key. This is not Simply Good Pictures' first offering on this site and with the same complaint. Giveaway of the Day simply needs to step forward and ensure this problem doesn't continue to exist.

What I like about Simple Good Pictures is that's it's easy to use. Most of the time it improves on the photo when using the two auto settings and if I don't like the changes it suggested then I can turn off the auto option and use sliders to adjust the photo.
At this stage there is two adjustments; I would like to see an sharpness adjustment.
Photos that show no change are usually the ones that don't need any improvement. It's fun to use as I'm interested to see what it will do for some of my photos.

This has happened to me with several giveaways lately and I've missed out on some good giveaways.
Developers need to test this stuff out before issuing an offer. This type of oversite does not build credibility in the software.

Installation and registration went smooth, no problems at all. Tried several photos taken during the day and night. The photos taken during the day didn't really seem to change much, it did darken the colors a little in a couple of photos, but overall, no dramatic change. When I tried the photos taken at night, it boosted the contrast of the photos which induced more noise into the photo. Can live with a darker photo more then one with high noise. Having to open one photo at a time, no basic editing tools (like crop), and inducing more noise into the photos, isn't worth it for me.

The free version of Photoscape does a better job at one click fixing photos plus has numerous tools to edit photos with.

I tried Simply Good Pictures 5 and PhotoLemur 3. Both apps work fine for what they provide -- fully automatic & fairly fast image enhancement -- but neither can match the results you can get editing photos manually.

While I personally believe that the more pro reviews of PhotoLemur [greatly] exaggerate the quality of its results, this app does have an edge over Simply Good Pictures 5, with 1/2 dozen profiles that give slightly different results. PhotoLemur also does batch processing -- it shows a large thumbnail of each photo, & you can optionally click each one to set the profile & relative strength of the effects. You have to move up to Engelmann's Photomizer to get batch processing. Photomizer provides more features than PhotoLemur, but IMHO that also means that you'll likely spend more time setting up the batch of photos for processing compared to PhotoLemur.

I'm in the process of using a document [sheet-fed] scanner to scan all of our old photo prints. The name of the game here is speed, because that's the only way I can hope to get the thousands of photos done. Editing each scan manually is out -- it'd take too long -- so I settled on using PhotoLemur 3, since the small amount of time spent setting up a batch for processing seems worth the frankly modest improvements it makes to the photos. The profiles & batch capabilities are why I chose it over Simply Good Pictures 5, and the simpler, faster batch setup was why I chose it over Photomizer, at the expense of *maybe* doing a bit better on some of the photos that needed more work. Please note that while it's not a big problem for me, during processing PhotoLemur uses most of the resources of the Ryzen 2700 in this PC -- I would expect it to be slower on slower hardware.

Hi, when checked today my Simply Good Pictures 5 had shown Status:

Installed version: 5.0.6793.21527
Available version: 5.0.6865.28863

and options underneath:
1) Update now
2) Show changelog..(here link takes us to page showing what's improved in v.4 only)

My License type shown: Full version.

So what happens when 'update now' is executed and new Installation starts:
SecureAPlus Antivirus reports: 'Threat Detected!' (bootstrapper.exe, Win32/Heri), pressed 'Ignore Once'.. and carried on. Operation Successful, Launch..
It's updated to the last version with License: Full version.

Just to be on safe side.. I then run full scan using my SAP and it shows clean of any malware. Next, found a file called 'bootstrapper.exe' and it took me to ProgramData/PackageCache..with Simply Good Pictures5 icon and found out that it offers window called 'Modify Setup' with Repair or Uninstall options. Hope it helps.

Simply Good Pictures is a handy little photo Tool, showing in most cases much more clear dark/over cast or damaged images. It is entirely up to a user to decide if results are good enough to be saved as such, or if they need futher, detailed adjustments in other photo Programs. Which ever way - it offers a decent start.

You can use a program like Shadow Defender or Toolwiz Time Freeze to test the upgrade process. If you like the results, you can accept the upgrade. If not you can reboot and be back where you started.

Downloaded without a hitch. Took a while "initializing", but I think that may because I already had version 4 installed, and the install automatically completed as an upgrade. And not certain, but the completion pop-up had the licensing information, and showed another update available. I did NOT select the update, and when status checked under help/about, it showed "full License" was valid for version 5.

Unlike another commentator stated, their *is* an option to chose where it is installed. First pop-up was for language selection, the second where you have to populate with check marks (for the licensing agreement), there is an "options" pin where you can select the install path, and if a desktop start-up link is created or not.

I did not think the code worked because the software said the code was invalid . I did try to reenter it , And it showed nothing and a window behind it was black but it seemed to freeze up. So it closed. I reopened to try the code once more but there is no place to add the code When I went to use the program I do not see a place to add your code. Is it okay then? The photos did improve and there was nothing showing that you did not register it . I am confused Thank you for any help

I must have had a previous version installed as immediately after installing today download I was greeted with an option to upgrade even that. I agreed and now the latest version, 5.0.6865.28863 and shows Full Version and I did not see any pop-up requesting my e-mail address. Tested on 3 or 4 generic images downloaded from Instagram and it seemed to work fine but not dramatically (that is a good thing in this instance).

Reply   |   Comment by Rick  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+5)

Rick,

I had a similar experience, although I did already have an earlier version of SGP installed.

Rather than install today's download on top of it, I ran the existing one. I noticed that it was listed in the Start Menu as "Simply Good Pictures 5 Free". However, under "Help > About" the license type showed as "full version".

I then chose to update it using the built-in checker. Afterwards the license type continued to show as "full version".

Not trusting that this might simply be the result of resorting to a limited-time trial period of the full version following an update, I then used Revo Uninstaller to remove traces (chosing the advanced/thorough scan). During that uninstall I noticed that two versions were listed: 32-bit v5.0.6865.28863 and 64-bit v5.0.6865.28690 .

The first time I chose to first uninstall the listed 64-bit version. Afterwards Revo did not list the other 32-bit version.

I then ran the GOTD downloaded installer. Once again it was listed as "Simply Good Pictures 5 Free" and again displayed as "full version". There was no pop-up window with "Request free key".

Figuring the uninstall may have been incomplete I repeated using Revo Uninstaller (and again there were two entries); but this time I chose the 32-bit entry first. I listed many more things in the Registry to delete (vs the previous session). Afterwards the 64-bit entry was still listed, so I repeated the uninstall.

I then restarted the PC and apparently there was yet another uninstall step which appeared to complete the operation.

Afterwards I ran the GOTD installer again, yet once again there was no pop-up window with "Request free key", the Start Menu shortcut was again "Simply Good Pictures 5 Free", and again displayed "full version" (both before and after the minor update of version 5).

So, I never did need to go through the e-mail steps, nor do I have any idea where the prior license info is stored to survive the thorough Revo Uninstaller sessions of all identifiable Registry entries and related files/folders.

Guess I'll just enjoy it and hope it doesn't actually end up expiring after any unannounced "trial" period!

Personally I like it for what it is -- a simple way to accept/reject automatically-chosen image enhancements which are usually acceptable improvements.

Once again, thank you Engelmann and GOTD.

Reply   |   Comment by HMarx  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

HMarx,

Just a clarification: It is both the folder and the shortcut in the Start Menu that continue to be titled "Simply Good Pictures 5 Free".

The title/name on the resulting launched application window is "Simply Good Pictures 5" matching the displayed "full version" status (at least for now).

Also, I had a typo error in the previous comment. It should have read "It listed many more things in the Registry to delete..." (My "t" key often needs a harder press!)

The guide for installation is not accurate. In the end - I don't know after inserting the license code, probably even without the code - one has to select : Start the full version. This is available next to 'Enter license code'.

I have been using this tool over a number of years, having first got it from here. It has allowed me to implement updates without problem, in fact it behaves like a free version. My disappointment with the present offer is that it is still version 5, which I already have after said updates.

As regards performance, my experience has been positive. It does a good enough job quickly and fully automatically. You can do better by using Photoshop etc, but that takes a lot longer and of course requires relevant skill, not to consider the acquisition cost.

As for output image format and quality, and hence file size, you can set it in the Settings under Extras.

The developer will start emailing you various offers, hence the reason for giving this one free. They don’t bother me the least, but you can stop them if you want.

My clear advice is to get it.

tomcat, I dunno why you'd mention PhotoShop with a steep learning curve & crazy price...when you can get PhotoScape totally free? No adds & free updates. PhotoScape can do 100X the things this "Simply Good" program can do. I've even downloaded 100's of "free" extra fonts & added it to the already fairly complete list they include. It has regular "easy" or newbie photo fixes plus sooo much more. I've mentioned it on here before but nobody seems to notice. Yes, you can get GIMP for free too, but again a steep learning curve like PhotoShop. I've been messing with graphic design for 20 years & I have over 200 related programs ("Simply Good" is not one of them) but my 1st, Numero uno, to go to is PhotoScape...Sooo, "My clear advice is to get" PhotoScape...you won't be long before you ditch most of the other mediocre software, 'cuz it can do most of your editing...anything more spectacular & I run to any of my other 199 programs.

"You can do better by using Photoshop etc..."

As far as the basics you'd do in any image editor, e.g. setting levels, Simply Good Pictures [or PhotoLemur] can get you pretty close, depending on the original you feed it. What it can't do -- what AFAIK any automatic app can't do -- is fix things like color fade, cast, or tint from an aging photo. It takes an image editor to try and fix lighting problems, but Simply Good Pictures [& PhotoLemur] can make lighting problems less obvious.

"I dunno why you'd mention PhotoShop with a steep learning curve & crazy price"

The name itself, PhotoShop, has reached generic status, like saying Kleenex instead of facial tissue -- when you see PhotoShop(ed) it can often mean any image editor. 2nd, no offense to your preferred Photoscape, it can't touch the capabilities in the PhotoShop & Lightroom pair you get for $10/mo. The GIMP &/or Chasys Draw IES are great free image editors, but they can't compare to Lightroom. PaintShop Pro is a great image editor, but like the other two I mention, no match for Adobe when it comes to RAW. As far as learning curves go, there's the web -- anything you want to know how to accomplish in image editing can easily be found with Google. Just follow the steps, 1, 2, 3 etc.

Ludwig Wittgenstein, Now, if I can only figure out how to get PhotoScape X, the free version from Microsoft...After jumping through hoops to get back into my MS live account, having to redo my password to something I will definitely forget because they won't allow anything close to what I used before... Microsoft says "You own this app." on the left & "Download to your devices" on the right... Does PhotoScape sharpen better than today's giveaway ?

Reply   |   Comment by Rob Crombie  –  5 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+2)

Rob Crombie, Yes, LOL...it might seem like a simple bit of software but you spend a bit of time with it (as I have) & you will change your outlook. It has a graduated scale 1-13 for levels of sharpness, most of the other settings are just an automatic for low-med--high clicks...but the contrast enhancement feature also sharpens/brightens it, so you need to play around...The undo/redo button works great...then there are the filters for those pictures that are a bit blurry, you can bring up the enhancement until it starts to pixeliate then try smart blur or noise reduction to soften it to your taste...sooo many effects & editing capabilities...but it's not perfect...that's why I have 200+ graphic softwares...But it is the software I start with & usually end checking my graphics with.
Click on the "Bright Colour" drop down arrow & go. What more can I say? It's free & better than 90% of the programs out there...cheers
