Any program that is solely dedicated to clean the registry is to be avoided. It is doubtful that cleaning the registry will result in any significant improvement to your windows system performance. What you are more likely to do is to trash your system. Avoid deep registry cleaning at all costs. Malwarebytes flags such programs as potentially unwanted programs. That in itself should tell you something. Ashampoo also has WinOptimizer available for free in various download sites. I believe WinOptimizer 2019 and WinOptimizer 15 are the latest versions offered for free. These are o.k. as long as you don't do deep registry cleaning. I have read reports of those who did deep registry cleaning and wound up very sorry they did it.

Robert Fare,
What you posted should be read by everyone that has a registry linked to their OS. It's totally true. If a registry cleaner was needed, then Microsoft would have come up with one. Even Microsoft does not recommend a registry cleaner. Every time I've ever had to reinstall windows was basically related to registry issues do to the use of registry cleaners. I guarantee that if you use a registry cleaner enough times over the period of many months that it will break something on your OS. Things that used to work no longer work and it can never be repaired. Once there are enough broken things on your OS, you'll have to end up reinstalling Windows because of the frustration of your current broken one. Only a professional who understands the registry should ever attempt to clean it up manually. Do not rely on registry cleaners telling you the truth about anything such as "Is your computer running slower?" A number of other more logical answers can best sum up why your computer is running slower and one of them would NOT BE YOUR REGISTRY!

Robert Fare, I agree with this assessment.

Robert Fare, I agree. I use Wise Care 365 and before anything is run I make a restore point beforehand. I have had to use it When ASC wiped out things that should not be wiped.

Charlie, I also have Advanced SystemCare. I have unchecked the boxes Registry Clean and Registry Defrag in the Clean and Optimize module of the program. And I don't do any deep registry cleaning. I have not had a problem with Advanced SystemCare since following these steps.

Robert Fare, I agree but registry fragmentation actually does slow down a computer and it does make sense to defrag it once every few months as regular hard drive defrag software sometimes doesn't do it correctly because It may be in use at the time of defragmentation

Robert Smith,
Registry cleaning is always a very contentious issue, and it is true that there are risks associated with it and it is not a universal panacea. It is not surprising that Microsoft recommends avoiding it, as they would not wish to be blamed for a broken system.
That said, there are arguments in favour of it, too, although weaker than in the past. Windows expert Mark Russinovich has written some balanced articles on the subject which are still available on the web.
There is also a Windows Club article about three Microsoft registry cleaning utilities, including one, RegClean, which was bundled with Windows 98, so a need has been acknowledged.
I have tried many, as I have a program which enables me to rollback my system completely in the event of problems.
In my experience, most of the reputable cleaners, such as TuneUp or Glary, are conservative and unlikely to create issues. I did use one small registry defragmenter which solved critical event viewer messages in an XP system, so have found them helpful in the past.
That said, I have not used them much on Windows 10, but would have a go if the system were slow and equipped with a rollback program: without one, set a restore point first, at least.

Betsy, To activate your free copy request the registration key by pressing "Get free activation key" button in the program window.
Fill in the form on the pop-up page using your Ashampoo account email, and the registration key will appear on the same page and will be sent to you by email.

I have Ashampoo WinOptimizer 2019 v. 15.00 installed on my two computers (desktop & laptop). Registry Cleaner module is incorporated in it. I have spotted now WinOptimizer Free v. 17.00, which seems to be a newer product. However, I am confused: please, advise if I should uninstall the version I have at the moment and install the Free version. There is no information on this issue.

I think we keep being told by those in the know that it simply isn't WORTH messing with your registry -- it can create more problems than it solves.

And, since as BAW30s explains (below) it is just a piece of Win Optimiser hived off, suspicions are that it is basically just a come-on for Ashampoo's main programme.

Anyway -- no thanks, not for me.

Tranmontane, If you are careful and in the know, a careful cleaning of the registry occasionally is not a bad thing. I believe my collegues were referring to the 1's who are not careful and, yes, it's a disaster waiting to happen.
Ashampoo does offer this separate from main Win Optimiser, not as a come-on, but I do agree with your filler assesment. But since I have Win Optimizer 2019 already, this isn't required.

Tranmontane,

"I think we keep being told by those in the know that it simply isn't WORTH messing with your registry -- it can create more problems than it solves."

THE problem with Windows registry is that it exists -- seriously. ;) Other OSes do just fine without one. And because it exists, coders writing software abuse it -- there are no rules that they must follow. Some people report good results -- which is why registry cleaners exist -- while others report no change, and some report problems afterwards. I'm Not saying anyone should or shouldn't give it a try, because the results can vary, but do a complete image backup beforehand, and the risk amounts to the time it would take to restore that backup.

"... it is just a piece of Win Optimiser hived off, suspicions are that it is basically just a come-on for Ashampoo's main programme."

We see this sort of thing a lot with the video converters -- one fully complete app for a higher price, and limited versions selling for less. If you visit the product page for today's GOTD they are selling the Ashampoo Registry Cleaner -- you can click the buy button & will go to the checkout page. Would Ashampoo rather you bought their WinOptimizer for more money? No Doubt.

"Maybe GOTD was running low on programmes to offer, and this being the weekend, this partial programme was stuck in here, as a sort of space filler??"

I think fewer companies are willing to give away anything at all, & that the GOTD team does a fantastic job to be able to offer a GOTD every day. Everyone is going to have their favorites -- while you might pass on today's offer, there are loads of others taking advantage of it. Hopefully in the coming week they'll have a few apps you'll like better.

This is one of thirty modules included in the utilities suite Ashampoo WinOptimizer, now in version 17.
It would be interesting to know why it's being offered separately: I assume it's to try to persuade users to buy the whole program!

from Microsoft support website:

Microsoft does not support the use of registry cleaners.

Some products such as registry cleaning utilities suggest that the registry needs regular maintenance or cleaning. However, serious issues can occur when you modify the registry incorrectly using these types of utilities. These issues might require users to reinstall the operating system due to instability. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved without a reinstallation of the Operating System as the extent of the changes made by registry cleaning utilities varies from application to application.

Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the use of a registry cleaning utility can be solved. Issues caused by these utilities may not be repairable and lost data may not be recoverable.
