Is this different or more or less useful than WinDirStat? I've been using WinDirStat for a long time since it's free to find large files and figure out what I need to uninstall or delete, and it is a great program. I'll give this a try and see how it compares.

It works fine but maybe the slowest Tree utility I have ever tried.

I just wanted to say thank you for including the very clear specifics of the license being given away. Thank you!

Uninstalled after waiting for a return from it's "Processing" screen for several minutes. I could care less if it works when it takes so long to get results.

Yes, I do work at a large company IT Help Desk.
We use Tree Size Free to view disk usage of our large NAS storage (60TB) drives.
We have also used WinDirStat (which is also free) as mentioned by another commenter.
I also have used them on my workstation (Windows 10).
Both work very well.

Well, it works, but "Computing resources size, please wait..." and wait... and wait... - and I have quick computer with SSD. And it reads resources again and again during use, every time I open a directory which was not opened yet in this session - it renders this sw almost unusable. I shall keep it for a while, maybe by next great disk cleaning it will be useful, I will see... Really obsolete GUI look and feel is a bit surprising (what about skins?). On the other hand this sw does what it promises. Just too slowly for me - even starting it takes a few minutes (every time). I dont see much of advantage compared tu Windows File Explorer :-(- OK, I see file/directory size at once and for all elements in the tree, but I have to wait too long for it.

I tested TreeSize Free too - the first opinions: it is much quicker for me and offers much more information.
And its GUI is nicer too ;-)

The FASTEST free alternative that I have found over the years, is https://wiztree.en.lo4d.com/windows.

mark_wr, Yes: WizTree is at least as good as anything else of this type.

Reply   |   Comment by Ludwig Wittgenstein  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

mark_wr, WizTree is excellent, very fast, free, and portable. Its interface and functions resemble WinDirStat (not updated since 2007) and is currently maintained as of 10/31/19. Highly recommended...

There is not a visual represantation which I kind of expected. It only shows the directory list and their sizes, something which any file management software would do anyway without the 2 - 3 seconds loading time.

Reply   |   Comment by jedi  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+3)

jedi, 2-3 seconds loading time? I have about a minute and additional delays during operation. Maybe I have lot of files and directories, but not extremly lot...

Reply   |   Comment by Henry  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+1)

Henry, it initially took several minutes to load. And after that, it still needs some time to analyze each subfolder.

Finn B. Andersen, same with me. It has happened several with GOTDs. It doesn't allow me to install it, even if I run as administrator.

Does anybody know how to solve this problem? Please help.

Reply   |   Comment by A B  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (0)

Finn B. Andersen,

Press Windows key and R key simultaneously, type regedit

Now go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>MICROSOFT>WINDOWS>CURRENT VERSION>POLICIES>SYSTEM.

On the right side find Enable LUA -right-click it and then click Modify and here set value to "0" instead of "1". click OK and restart your computer.

Your problem should be solved. If not, you can always set the value back to 1

This is how I solved this problem on my machine a while back.

I hope this solution might prove helpful in your case.

Cheers,

consuella

Gordon White,

I am guessing you are running one of the newest versions of windows 10, and possibly pro.

If so, I would suggest that in case you encounter this problem again, that you try some other methods, like: disabling your antivirus and firewall but only for the time needed to install a giveaway, running sfc/ scannow in the administrative mode, or launching the setup file as an administrator.

Cheers,

consuella

It seems to work, takes a while to load resources, I have a 1 Tb hard drive and took a few mins, but works as expected.

This sort of makes me think of a free (or paid) offering called TreeSize which looks similar and likely works as good, maybe better.

The icons used in this program make me think this was designed for Windows XP. Vista at the latest.

For this purpose I use the excellent -- and FREE -- WinDirStat, available at: www.windirstat.net
The benefit of this is that if/when I change to a new computer, I don't lose the software for which the licence is no longer any good.

Reply   |   Comment by Bruce Fraser  –  4 years ago  –  Did you find this comment useful? yes | no (+30)

Bruce Fraser, what version of Windows are you using? On WinDirStat it states "It is known to run on Windows 95 (IE5), Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows NT4 (SP5), Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, 8 and 8.1." Nothing about Win10.

While you are using a free program, I will be using this very nice, handy paid program for the next few years. I'll worry about that other bridge if and when I have to cross it.

I'm using Windows 10.

Javck, you're under the mistaken impression that free software is inferior to paid. Quite often free software is better and superior to paid ones.

Attempted, I've been using WinDirStat for many years and it works great on Windows 10. It is basically the best free program to see visual representations of the data you are looking for. I use it a lot for finding large files or sections in folders that I need to remove or re-organize.

Attempted, I have just installed it in SandboxIE on a W10 64 Home 1909 desktop. It runs fine, but it takes some time to build the tree.
