Here are my results between Play Claw and Fraps at both default settings.
System Specs: Windows 7 32 Bit, Intel Dual Core 2.30 GHZ, 4GB DDR3 RAM, Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Family Chipset Graphics Integrated.
Game Tested: Counter Strike 1.6

From my previous experiences with fraps I know that CS 1.6 will run at 30 FPS when recording but when not it will run at around 90. I recorded normally and it turns out no lags and it was recording at 30 FPS. But when I tried at play claw it was really laggy. During recording it was at 8 FPS. It was so laggy I had a hard time to move but the good thing was the file size was alot smaller than fraps. So I changed playclaw to set at no compression and STILL during recording it was at 8 FPS and this time the file size was bigger. I even changed the number of cores when recording and still the same situation occurs. I don't know what to do in order for it to match up against fraps but this is my results.

Thanks, in particular, to #25 Doc Savage's fantastic review I installed this. #3 is incorrect that FRAPS costs money unless you want videos limited to 30 seconds at a time. FRAPS regular purchase price is a little steep so I appreciate the opportunity to try an alternative. To answer #5, there is an options in settings to allow Playclaw to minimize to system tray.

Installation was painless, I did have to send information over the Internet to activate this software using the provided registration code. They did, however offer an alternative in the form of visiting a website. Since I didn't use that method I can't elaborate.

I used Playclaw to record Skyrim using a Radeon HD 5850. I have tweaked Skyrim to max out the graphics beyond the default ultra settings. Mostly cleaning up the blocky shadows that are notoriously bad using Skyrim default settings. Without Playclaw I average 40FPS. Since the game renders up to 60FPS, I know I'm pushing my card to the limit and it will give me an opportunity to see how much Playclaw impacts my framerate.

Once Playclaw starts with the default "low compression" settings, the framerate drops about 20FPS. A 4min video takes up about 8MB of space. In comparison, FRAPS drops the framerate about 10FPS. With both set to record stereo sound at 30FPS, I found FRAPS would take up about 3-4MB per minute of recorded video vs. 2MB per min at the default settings of Playclaw.

I'm unsure whether FRAPS compresses video during recording so I switched the Playclaw settings to "no compression". Started running into problems. The first time I tried to run Skyrim while recording my computer suddenly turned into a PS3. The loading screen took forever to load (usually I don't have time to read a single tip) and the Playclaw video stopped recording once the game started. The second time I loaded Skyrim the game crashed during gameplay recording and the video was unviewable. Surprisingly I did not seen an improvement in framerates even though the file sizes averaged about 10MB/min of recording. Since there is no benefit to using no compression, it's no use using this setting but it is concerning my system became unstable during use.

I tried changing the overlay settings to a smaller font size and moving them to the right side of the display. They showed up much lower than I would like and the on-screen display positioning doesn't match their placement on the overlay window in settings. PNG screenshots at 1920x1200 averaged 4MB.

I would like to suggest to the developer that we are given some options of how we would like our files named (i.e. name, date, name+number, etc.) Being able to take screenshots at any time, not just while playing games would also be a nice feature. Finally, it did not seem to detect my GPU automatically, I had to change the settings to Radeon manually.

In my haste to write this review before the giveaway is over, I'm probably being unfair to the developer. I didn't really have enough time to test the program fully. I do like the additional options such as GPU and CPU monitoring but I am a little concerned about stability. Right now I think FRAPS has the win but FRAPS is expensive. Playclaw could be a worthy alternative if it improves the impact on framerate and prices itself competitively.

What most people encounter is that they cant take shots or record.
the problem is that this is made for GAMES, meaning a game has to be open to record or take picks.
give playclaw a chance, its pretty good for free.

I payed for this application a while back. It took me a while to find good settings for it but once I did it ran really nicely.. The only problem was that it output corrupted files that I couldn't edit in premier... So in turn I asked for a refund and eventually got one. The creator of the app tried his best to fix the problem for me but in the end he was stumped.

A shame.

@ 25 , this records in avi not flv

Well according to its developer, this FREE TOOL, I've just found by chance a few minutes ago, records 3D games in avi, wmv, mp4, mkv and, unlike this GAOTD, in FLV and even certain popular ones which can play in iPod, iPhone.

I believe it's worth a try and not just because it's amazingly FREE:

What do you make of it dude??

Yes you are absolutely RIGHT!!

FRAPS is NOT FREE at all...so why did everybody say the opposite here?

You know, I'm not a PC GAMERS nut so I didn't know it!!

That being said....

Have a look at these 2 FREE ALTERNATIVES, I've just found by chance, that no one has mentioned yet:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Graphic-Capture/E-M-Game-Capture.shtml

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Graphic-Capture/YouRecorder-Free.shtml

And of course let me know your feedback about them...ok??

And finally a (silly??) question for everybody here:

what kind of applications apps like this one or FRAPS may actually have??

I mean, what can lead a PC User to buy a program like this one that does nothing but record a few minutes of a videogame on the screen, eating up CPU, RAM and HD space??

Can't get the point...sorry!

@30 U-FU Permit me, please, to speak in my own defense.
In the spirit of goodwill and not being immature enough to venture upon the use of sarcasm in return, I will merely state the following:

If you should happen to produce any product and make claims about it, expect those claims to be tested. I did my part by duly testing the claim that FPS would NOT be affected...as WAS claimed.

I would however say it was not me that was being ignorant..it was you. If you were paying attention to the things I said in my previous statement, I did mention that for FPS to be unaffected was a wild claim - and it was that claim, having previously tested Wegame, FRAPS and other recording software, that I set out to prove either correct or incorrect.

Set ALL settings to Your liking, making sure they are properly set, if unsure check dev's website help sheets. I had to set many settings right before this program would function properly FYI After install of a software go through every setting, set to your preference, then enjoy it.

#4-Marcus... Well DUH of course Your fps is going to be affected, don't be so ignorant of course it's going to affect framerate, that's a no brainer... and as for the description saying different, Oh well don't always believe what You see, Be certain of what You think instead, at any rate It affects the whole system, however not much not on my core i7 x58 system 8 threads and way cool this supports multi-thread all softwares manditorily SHOULD. I rarely if ever max 100% cpu usage, when i convert 6 videos at once it converts all 6 in a little over 3 minutes and cpu power to spare. Great giveaway, has been for the last week. And btw U-FU!

OK, here is my experience with this program. It does do all that it says, but it is slightly heavier on the resources than the other GAOTD program Bandicam. For my tests I used Batman Arkham City the latest patch in DX9 mode and I was using the built in benchmark of the game for comparison and recording at 1920x1200.

This program offers more info than the FPS on the overlay. If you want the overlay can display CPU/GPU temps, temp averages or for each core, which is not offered in other similar programs and is a really nice feature. It is something I think is really needed in all programs of this type. Though a serious omission in PlayClaw is the ability to disable the overlay with a hotkey. If PlayClaw is running you will have an overlay FPS or whatever other overlay info you selected to be displayed on the screen and won't be able to turn it off till you get back to the tray icon and uncheck it from it's options dialog box.

As far as resources, PlayClaw eats just a little bit more of the frame rate than Bandicam (about 1-2 fps) on my system while either recording or just having the overlay displayed (note: PlayClaw was set to only display the FPS counter like Bandicam to keep the test fair). It is basically negligible. But where it really eats up resources is in the recorded video. Playclaw uses a older inefficient mjpeg compression, while bandicam lets you pick from what you have installed (I used xvid). The playclaw video ran 3m16s and took up 586MB and the bandicam one I ran was 3m4s and took up 433MB. If you strip the playclaw video of the 12s you still have a difference of about 116MB not a huge difference but over time about a 39-40MB/minute difference at 1920x1200.

It's still a good thing to have around if you are tweaking things on your system. I like the numerous info you can display in the overlay, though it is a big oversight to not have a hotkey to turn the overlay on and off. I would still take bandicam over playclaw only because, these programs are meant to capture gameplay videos, and having the ability to capture with a more efficient video codec is a more necessary feature. If you have tons of HD space then it really won't matter especially if you are only uploading to youtube since they recompress your video when you upload it.

Gave this a try but I also have black screens as well as black videos. Stopping video recording also made the games crash on one occasion and caused very long delays in another.

Also, I keep closing the main window of PlayClaw because its main window is also the options window.

Fraps is the standard for recording movies and taking screenshots but I personally wish it had more options and was hoping that PlayClaw would be a nice replacement. Sadly it doesnt work for me.

People should stop telling that fraps is free, it isn't
Was planning to tell how wegame is a freeware application (with online storage for easy uploading) and so much better but to be honest, I would have been wrong
Where wegame is not capable of recording DX11 games. this app is capable of that. I think it is a bit heavy on the system though (fps in saints row the third dropped from 30 to 5)but this could also be due to the area i recorded in.
For the casual gamer that doesn't buy the latest high end games wegame is the answer (especially because of it's in app upload capability's) but for gamers that are more into it, have clans, are running teamspeak or vent, this should be the recorder to choose if only for it's DX11 support .Another freeware option would be xFire btw but this only has real use if your already a heavy online gamer that is in a Guild/Clan but again, this does not support DX11 either unlike the software of today

Like #15, I could install & register, but was unable to get any output from the program? No pics nor video?

XP SP3
v2.1.0 build 1502

seemingly sets up an NVIDIA CUDA driver
adds a "PawClaw video decoder" to your "codecs"

no help file

includes WinRing0 including (BSD) license

activates easily with the given key
(requires internet access)

the options dialog always remains in the taskbar
would be better if it hid itself (as there is a systray icon anyhow)

installs into directory of your choice, ~4 MB
additionally installs cudart32_32_16.dll & tmbvcm32.dll into \Windows\System32\

options seemed straight forward, but that is as far as I could get with it cause I could get no output

First, what I consider a mandatory disclaimer. I've used this software since the original free giveaway well over a year ago. I even went so far as to buy it when I had a hard disk crash because I liked it so much. That 2on't stop me from giving as far and un-biased an opinion as I can but I wanted you to understand that in advance.

Those of you that remember the days when Ashraf of DotTech.org reviewed all the software released on this site will be pleased to know he rated this one as 2 thumbs up - Great. He compared this one to FRAPS, a free system that does essentially the same thing and named it a serious contender. Fraps has been on the market for a long time but Playclaw introduced several innovations he liked and was light on system resources.

I can't honestly compare the two, I've never used FRAPS and don't use it for game recording anyway. What I can tell you is that this software is a quality item and well worth checking out. The developer even took the time to work out the bugs in the program so it would work to record IMVU chats, the purpose I wanted it for. Not bad for a free program with limited or no tech support eh? It took less than 2 weeks for him to fix the problem and he emailed me the corrected version prior to release. His purpose was to make sure the fix would work for me before he made it an official release but I consider that support above and beyond what almost any software company will do.

Also my registration key (from the version I purchased, not the giveaway) continues to work to this day even through all the upgrades. (Version 1.5 up through 2.1.) Again, unusual for a developer to allow upgrades like that. Many software developers are reluctant to allow you to upgrade at all w/o some upgrade fee but he did not even consider a version change worth forcing me to pay another fee. Again I consider this service beyond what other software companies even think of doing.

Now as to use. Setup is easy and the common tab allows 4 configuration options. Language choice, Start Minimized, Minimize to System Tray and Start With Windows three of these are check boxes and the first one is a drop down menu option. Extremely simple operation all the way through, you can configure hotkeys by selecting the box showing the key and pressing the new key you want to use instead. Configure folder options for screenshots and videos, and those can be separate folders if you want. Compression, frame size, frame rate and even the number of cores to use if you are on a multiple core machine. Overlays are highly configurable by simple checkboxes for each ove4rlay option. Again solid workmanship building an easy user interface with simple controls that you set yourself.

Limitations: Screenshots are limited to 4 options, PNG, JPEG, TGA and BMP. The last one is relatively useless due to it's high file size and lack of options so I ignore it and pretty much stick with PNG. GIF would be a nice option but not supported as yet. The video has only one recording option FLV. This gives you a high quality recording with limited system resources used, but makes options for editing the resulting film later more of a problem. (Editing can't be done with this program BTW, you need a separate program for that.) Simply put there are not very many FLV editors out there so the option to record in AVI would be nice. Both of these limitations are very minor IMO. Converting a file to AVI isn't that hard, many free programs out there can do it, and PNG is a solid dependable format that will do almost everything GIF would except animations. For a screenshot you don't need animations anyway, that's the job of the video recorder. With the proper software you can even convert FLV to animated GIF yourself.

Please note I am not suggestion that this program get the ability to do conversions. Cluttering up this program with useless features that are beyond the scope of it's function would only slow it down and make it use far more system resources. Even recording directly to AVI would probably slow the system down tremendously and that's the real beauty of this program, it won't slow down your system significantly. I used the original version on a system with 4MB ram and a 80 GB hard disk running windows XP. The program I recorded from is a 1.5 GB monster of an Avatar chat program and I still did not notice a significant reduction of speed. Since upgrading my system I can't see any speed reduction at all while using this program.

It isn't a general purpose screenshot tool or video recorder for everything you do on your computer. You nedd to record a tutorial or take a screenshot of your browser widow then you need another tool entirely. What it does do it does extremely well. My final recommendation is if you don't need it don't get it but if you want to be able to take screenshots and videos of your online games or similar programs like chat then definitely check this one out. I'm still a huge fan of this program and I don't see that changing.

Bandicam is faster, better, more flexible, has Variable bit rate, small files and records and stops with just one button control and uses the CPU very wisely.
This software is not optimized for the average user and require high resource usage. It uses some hidden proprietary monitoring software that interferes with many security programmes and can freeze the computer at random intervals for unknown reasons.

Just uninstalled it.

Installed fine on XP-sp3. Works very well visually in GTR2 (slightly low volume and momentary sound drop-outs, though) and in IL2; with FSX, not so much. That took ~50% framerate hit and got choppy, even with the compression rate elevated. I don't have a top end machine- e8400 dual core @3.6, GTX460.
Playback was always sharp and the colors quite accurate. The one major disappointment was that I couldn't get it to work with my heavily hacked/modded/decrypted copy of GTL(which doesn't show in Control Panel either, although FRAPS is able to find it. And yes... I do own the DVD) Doing a demo vid of my new mod was the main reason for 'buying' PlayClaw. Can any of you wizards help me with that one?
All in all a polished, professional product and a definite keeper for me. Thank you Sytexis and GOTD!
@ Chris Locke #3- There's no comparison. Free FRAPS only gives me half frame, at 20-25fps, with horrid colors. Reds especially are waay off.

PlayClaw installs 64-bit and 32-bit drivers (on 64-bit Windows). Anything which captures the screen on my Win7x64 PC with nVidia drivers results in low frame rates. It could be the nVidia drivers, or possibly the presence of Microsoft Expression Encoder. There are options to start with Windows, minimize to the system tray, etc.

I didn't find PlayClaw to be very reliable. Enabling pre-record causes failure on my system. So does enabling audio--PlayClaw doesn't support the software audio loopback of Vista+. The Record key wasn't reliable, sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn't. PlayClaw can use all of the cores of multi-processor systems. On my PC, not only smallest file sizes but highest and smoothest frame rates were yielded by high compression. For those users who don't experience much of a drop in frame rates from using screen recording software and have multi-core processors, PlayClaw could be a better solution than similar products.

Here is a sample of a capture on my PC using high compression. This was taken during playback and JPEG compressed, which reduces quality further, but the quality is still good. Zoom to fullsize. I recorded the overlays with the video.

Well...today's giveaway looks like an EXCELLENT PROGRAM (in my view slightly better than freeware FRAPS) despite being confined to a very strict niche of PC users (==> PC GAMERS).

So THUMBS UP from me!!

However, for a more comprehensive FREE video snapshots solution, most people here may find more useful trying an excellent and pretty unknown program, I recently stumble upon, called "SUPER PICK 4.0".

In a nutshell, it's an app designed to capture and record any screen activities either within the DESKTOP, or MOVIES, or just within GAMES both in full screen and fixed region, meaning it's not only meant for PC GAMERS, unlike today's giveaway.

This FREE tool records videos (movies, games etc...) with AUDIO into 4 video file formats(AVI, FLV, SWF, MP4) which are very small in size, letting you choose video and audio codec and even the quality output, with a lots of other features available as well (see screenshots below).

Hi,
Doesn't it work on XP Home edition? I installed it and activation was OK. I changed capture keys for Screenshot and Video. I also changed destination folder.
When i run PlayClaw (by dubbel-clicking the icon) I get the window on screen and an icon in the ystem tray, but clicking the capture keys doesn't produce anything, no screenshots and no video.
What am I doing wrong?
I have another Screen capture program installed, but PlayClaw doesn't work even if I exit the other pgm.

#7, We use anti-piracy protection system in PlayClaw called VMProtect. This system injects some additional protection code in original PlayClaw code to prevent software from hack. Some antivirus tools can warn user that they have detected suspect code in PlayClaw and this is normal situation.

Do not worry and install PlayClaw again.

#5, PlayClaw 2.x supports only 32-bits Ventrilo client. Perhaps you've tried it with 64-bits version. Install Ventrilo 32b and try again. Also Ventrilo client must be in its original form, without any modifications.

I bought fraps moons ago but downloaded and installed this to see if it work better. Like fraps this program takes Great video, sound and screen caps. I'm still getting 80+ fps[same as fraps] in BF3 while taking video and screen caps.
This program offers more options than fraps and today it is free!! GREAT program.
The free / trial version of fraps you are limited to 30sec of video, this program your limited only to hard drive space. Gotta love GAOTD.

The FRAPS free version has a 30 sec. video limit and only saves screen shots in BMP format (as does the trial version of today's software), plus costs more.

If PlayClaw works as promised it's a good deal for free.

Downloaded fine on Vista 64-bit.

The UI is easy to use and functional with useful settings.

Screenshots and video came out well. I noticed a little lag when taking video, but not bad and it's expected anyway. I like the option of changing the screenshot notifier to text or red flash.

Video looked good and recorded sound nicely. I'd like there to be some indication that video is recording besides the FPS counter turning red. If FPS overlay is off, you can't tell if you're recording. Not a big deal, but would be nice.

I can't seem to get it to minimize to the system tray, which I'd like it to do, rather than have a window tab on the taskbar. I thought I did it once, but can't do it when I'm trying to.

The overlays looked good and I liked that I could position them wherever I wanted. I could not get the Ventrilo overlay to work, which is a big thing. There aren't any settings to it so I don't think I could have done something wrong, but can't rule out user error. Vent/TS overlay is a really good selling point, I hope it works in the future.

I didn't do anything with benchmarks, but it'll record FPS, CPU and GPU and seems pretty standard for benchmarking.

Overall, looks like a good product and would be a good alternative to Fraps or the similar features of Xfire (screenshots and video). This would be great if the Vent/TS overlay worked.

I would and will recommend this. Thanks!

Installed no problems on Windows 7 x64, I wanted to try this one out as I thought the words,"without affecting the gameplay or reducing frame rate." were a bit of a wild claim.

I tried Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3, Poker Night At The Inventory, Brothers In Arms Hell's Highway.... It came as absolutely no surprise that even with an Nvidea card on the 'recommended' multi-core system the fps and the gameplay were in actual fact affected. Oh well...never mind.
Thanks GAOTD

Whats wrong with Fraps? Thats been around since 3D games were invented, and has remained free and constantly updated.

PS: #1 - Anyone that uses 'coz' deserves to get slapped! ;-)
