@82, Deb

This is one of the silliest comments I've ever seen. In the United States, and generally worldwide, copyrights are not enforced by "watermarks."

You believe that because this software can be used to "steal" (in your opinion), it should not be available for sale. Let's look at vehicles. They can be used to kill people, used for getaways in commission of various crimes, and so forth.

So, you think we ought to make vehicles illegal too?

In the United States, simply watermarking images will NOT suffice to file a criminal copyright complaint. I would doubt your chances on a civil case as well. While time does not permit me to give a full legal dissertation on the subject, there are three key points in protecting your valuable works of art:
1) Embed security features known only to you in your work. In the case of a painting, record existing characteristics: document items such as certain brush stroke patterns, blemishes, etc. Take your embedded codes and/or unique features documentation and notarize it.
2) Tag ALL displays and publications of your work with the correct copyright notation, INCLUDING the YEAR of first publication. Without the YEAR, copyrights are unenforceable. The format is: (c) Copyright 2011, Your Name. The (c) can be as shown, or the c within the circle mark.
3) Register your work with the copyright office of your home country. Although this step is NOT necessary, it often makes the difference between a criminal+civil case, as opposed to only being able to file a civil case. You know that you can file groups of work as "collections" and this can save you quite a bit on copyright fees.

As for "Photo Stamp Remover 4.2," it is a nice program. I think it's overpriced, and as we have more than 200 systems in our agency, price is a major factor. GOTD does not offer "freeware" as some people here seem to think. It is a great place to discover new software, and I have made some surprising discoveries here!

Thanks GOTD. Keep up the great work.

Since you do not want to publish any of my comments of the software , I will post everywhere else , on the offers and then we will see .
You people offer downloads for illegal uses and refuse to publish the nay sayers freedom of speach .
Offering products that allow people to steal from graphic artists and photographers is a bad thing and once published to warn people of the fact there are tools to remove watermarks and copyrights , I believe it will educate the artists on how to better protect themselves from software like this . If you think blocking peoples negative comments about this will shut us up , you are wrong ! I will post on my sites and let people know how one sided you are not to mention , trojans and spyware in your downloads .
Have a good day ! P.S. This comment will be posted anywhere I can post it . Twitter , facebook , websites emails to friend . So please by all means ignore all the posts from graphic artist who are offened by this offer !

Unfortunately Norton is no longer the De-facto Security Suite it once was. It now has a rightful reputation for problems and in a friends unfortunate case actually WAS the problem when it trashed her system. It was traced to Norton. Check out another Security Suite if you enjoyed the look of the program.

Installed on XP SP 3 Pro, No problem whatsoever. Registered by copy/paste. Ran it & imported an image with many colors & It worked flawlessly .I used the marker tool instead of fresstyle or preset shape and found amazing results. You can size it and color it whatever the need be. It left some tags behind. I just saved it as a png & imported it into my graphic program of choice & detail cleaned it. It looks wonderful. It does undo well but selection is not saved so you must re-select section. No big deal. Saves in just about every image type.
Those who had bad images should experiment with the tools. Those with graphic experience should have no problem getting the desired results. I will keep it. Free is good.

downloaded without a problem. gave it a try and it does a decent job but I too a photographer am not thrilled about this type of software where its sole purpose is to remove things like watermarks. Yes I know it can be down in photoshop, but that is not the sole purpose of photoshop.

I'm late to the party today - not enough time to read all of the comments, but felt compelled to respond to one of them...

To photographers worried about watermarks being removed from your works: While this software MAY effectively remove MOST of the watermark from your images, there will always be SOME degree of "artifacts" being left behind, since it's impossible to overwrite each and every pixel with the pixel that occupied that spot prior to the application of the watermark.

Also, this program will NOT change EXIF information that's embedded into the header of every graphic file (especially digital photographs), which contains data about the camera make and model used to shoot the photo, as well as the "author's" name, date taken, and other technical info as well.

The best recommendation I have for professional photographers is to document the filesize, EXIF data, and any other data you can find pertaining to your copyrighted works, and when you spot a "pirate" version of your work, send the offender a prepared "snail mail" letter, using an Attorney's letterhead, ordering them to cease and desist further use of your copyrighted works or be prepared to face a slew of civil and criminal consequences for doing so.

(I also recommend that you send the letter via Certified Mail, to lend an air of "authenticity" to it - even if you don't really intend to take any legal action against them. Often an official-looking letter from someone who appears to be an attorney is enough to put the fear of God into them and make them stop using your works for THEIR gain, whether materially or otherwise.

Naturally, if the offender is located "offshore," there's really not much you can do about it, just like all of the Viagra spam from the Middle East, North Africa, and the Far East.

But if you simply want to clean up an old wrinkly wallet photo you've been carrying around for ages, this software is certainly worth a shot!

This is a nice application. The downloading, installation and registration was quite easy.

I noted that the "quick remove" often worked perfectly, whist the "remove" (assuming that is more thorough than 'quick') did not work as well many times!

I tested a number of images and had mixed results from very good to perfect. Items removed included dust, unwanted light glare, scratches, letters engraved on a chess board, etc. I did not test any watermarks as I never put visible watermarks on my images.

There is a serious flaw which the developer must address: The program can be exited without its asking if the modified images should be saved or not. ...thus... Warnings to users: 1) do not use your original 2) Keep saving your changes periodically.

As far as the watermark removal, copyright, etc.: stop living in the past! The best way to mark copyright images is to embed invisible codes within the work. This is the surest way to win ANY copyright case in court. This is what is being used now by major motion picture studios, and they have been very successful in tracking down the "inside jobs" of film pirates. Watermarks can be trimmed off images too easily, so they are not a "security feature." Visible watermarks are like pasting a giant arrow over one's home alarm control box. The other option of course is just put watermarks all over your images and make them look like junk.

Thanks GOTD, posters to the forum and especially SoftOrbits. Cheers.

Re comment #69, which references my comment/request #28 for developers to put back in the blur-an-area tool which they had in a very earlier release.

While it is true you can use this software to remove an object, save the result and then open that into one's image editing software (photoshop elements, paint.net, whatever) to use its blur-tool, the problem is that every time one opens, edits and saves a JPEG image, the quality is degraded.
Even if your change is minuscule, it degrades the entire image just a bit -- even more so if your save quality setting is less than 86-87 range.

So it would be best if the blurring tool was included in this software.

One other thing I noticed from running the program several times now, is that it calls out to the internet several times on every launch/run. And often about every few minutes after it has been launched and running.
My firewall reported many calls to p3nlhg66c122.shr.prod.phx3.secureserver.net (which seems to be GoDaddy). Some of which I allowed, some of which I blocked. But either way, did not changes its behavior of calling out again multiple times on next launch.
This seems rather bizarre behavior - really no need for this application to be calling out to the web every few minutes.
There is no option in the Tools/Options to control checking for updates or whatever, I am not sure what to think is going on with that.

@ #64, Deb: My wife is a semi-pro photographer too, so we share your concerns. However, it's been possible for years, and years, to get hold of an old copy of Photoshop at a decent price and within 5 minutes learn how to use the clone tool to erase / modify any image of any kind. Actually, buying an outdated version of Photoshop (say, PS 7) makes a lot of sense, if you can get hold of one -- no need for CSS for the average user.

Nothing comes close to Photoshop's cloning / healing processes because Adobe's algorithms are, well, what you're paying for, and the flexibility to size / modulate etc is unbeatable.

Today's GOATD doesn't pretend to be a Photoshop replacement. But then, it doesn't seem to have much idea what it is: calling itself a 'watermark' removal tool is in invitation to disaster. And anyway, it isn't: it's just another tool for replacing one set of pixels with another set, whether the target pixels represented a watermark or not.

Trouble is, this doesn't do the replacement very well at all, and the fact that in my case it introduced noticeable artifacting / ompression and therefore impairied the quality of every image it touched testifies to the fact that whatever today's developer may be, it certainly ain't a specialist in digital image manipulation -- InPaint, offered regularly on GAOTD, is superior and with a retail price that wasn't thought up in cloud cuckoo land.

As for worries over copyright theft, any photographer who doesn't have TinEye (free software) reverse image searcher installed on his or her computer is really asking for trouble.

We've had watermarked pix on eBay listings that were on one occasion nicked by someone else -- we didn't know about it -- but when we right-clicked on our images during our auction, TinEye went off to see if they were showing up somewhere else and gosh golly, there they were, minus our copyright, elsewhere on eBay.

TinEye is also exceptionally useful for social network pages / Internet forums where a seemingly authentic image appears of the "person" authoring the page / posting on the forum yet when right-clicked with TinEye turns out to be a counterfeit image stolen from elsewhere on the 'Net. (Parents be warned. . .)

For further information about TinEye's image searching / image matching ability, go here: http://www.tineye.com/

As for today's software, with its daft title and even dafter retail price, thanks GOATD, but no thanks.

#28: "The item it needs is a blur tool. I believe that an older version of this had a blurring tool. This one does not. There is no way to touch-up the area that something is removed from."

I think one big advantages of using something like today's GOTD in a plug-in format is you can go on to use your image editor's tools afterward... perhaps something they'll consider?

* * *

#38: "A free form selection tool would be more preferable and might help to produce better results."

There's a free-form tool if you go to the Tools menu. That said, I think you'll find with most of these apps the selection doesn't work the same, as hard & fast as it does in an image editor, where for example an effect only works on the selected area.

* * *

#64: ""In regards to post No. 22 : [As a semi-pro photographer I am rather dismayed by this offering. It makes all of my existing watermarked webbed images vulnerable. I may now have to redesign my whole site :( I wasnt aware of software of this type until now.]
I too posted that this software allows people to steal , but they would not approve my comment .Watermarks and copyrights are for a reason , then you have companies making software to take what doesn’t belong to them . Hope everyone is up to date on Copyright laws ."

Purely FWIW, I *think* the words "Watermark Remover" on the Photo Stamp Remover home page is more a good, 2 word description of what today's GOTD does -- I mean you could call it a seam carving or inpainting app & loads of people wouldn't have a clue what you were trying to sell. You might say photo object remover, but again I think many would find that confusing. OTOH Everyone knows what a watermark is. Everyone immediately grasps the concept. And IMHO the people who might steal your images aren't going to be Googling to find software to do it with. :-)

Photo Stamp Remover seems to use seam carving or inpainting, but it doesn't work the same as Inpaint, a previous GOTD. Simplified, seam carving is a method of analyzing an image, determining points of interest, & then those identified points of interest are processed separately from the rest of the image. Using the Very common example of a beach scene, the process would identify palm trees as something of visual interest, & then leave them alone while stretching/shrinking the rest of the image. Or the reverse can happen, with the palms being deleted & the rest of the image stretched to fill in any gaps where the trees used to be. The hard part I think is designing the rest of the software, trying to lessen if not eliminate what I believe is the most common Gotcha for this sort of app -- things can get interesting when you want to eliminate a rectangle somewhere near the center of a more complicated image, where ideally some stuff but not everything gets stretched. Software doesn't know to use surrounding data from just 2 or 3 or all 4 sides of that rectangle. Photo Stamp Remover seems to look for replacement data further away from your selection, & then a bit randomly clones that data to fill in the blank wherever your selected object used to be. Compared to Inpaint [which lots of GOTD regulars are familiar with], that can make Photo Stamp Remover better for some kinds of images, worse for others. You do have better selection or masking tools with Photo Stamp Remover, but with most of the apps/tools that use seam carving, selections influence the way things work, but not in the same absolute way you're used to with an image editor -- in testing *so far* today's GOTD seems to generally fit that mold, though using a *tighter* mask with a smaller selection can make a difference, particularly when doing additional passes to get rid of leftovers.

Installation isn't bad at all, with a new program key plus an uninstall key added to the registry -- the "Photo Stamp Remover" program folder holds 27 files & ~5 MB. That makes it small & harmless enough to hold onto, though it'll likely take some experience before you can predict where it'll work best, & with what kinds of images. If you save a portion of an image as a new file in your regular image editor, that's one way to control what data Inpaint or Photo Stamp Remover can use to fill in the blanks or gaps. Otherwise the predominate direction of your mask seems to influence just where Photo Stamp Remover looks for that replacement data, e.g. a horizontal paint stroke using the Marker seems to mean the app will look closely above & below, while a vertical stroke in the same place has it looking further afield & to the side. If you've used Inpaint you might recall it uses a bounding box to determine where it finds filler data, but that doesn't always work either, so I'm maybe more forgiving of SoftOrbits for not including something along the same lines.

The original focus of seam carving I think was re-sizing images for things like mobile sites & the cells that use them -- simply re-sizing an ad for example might make it unreadable &/or ineffective, & this way you could preserve the most important content without paying a graphics crew to rework everything. For stuff like inpainting, removing objects or restoring damaged areas, seam carving is a method that's still relatively new & evolving. And it'll take time & experience before most people can start to pick out where traditional cloning would work best, or when to use Photo Stamp Remover or maybe Inpaint. One problem with using a clone tool is that when/where the lighting varies [e.g. goes from light to dark] it can be very difficult to match -- another problem is that it can be very difficult to avoid noticeable patterns &/or brush marks. Whether you're using a separate app [like Photo Stamp Remover], a plug-in, or a built-in tool [as with P/Shop or The GIMP], seam carving might eliminate those 2 Gotchas.

Installed and activated fine, Toshiba Laptop w/Vista Home Basic. Echo need for clone, blur and touch-up tools, this is too "blocky" as is to be useful, except in very small selections - results look angular and have too-sharp edges that don't appear well integrated with surrounding background for me. NOT a keeper, sorry. 5 of 10 for effort - refine the product for another 3 or 4 points, but I really don't see any way to save this product so it can compete with more established programs, free OR retail. It just lacks so many basic functions....

As for those users afflicted with Norton in any version; IMHO it either works well for your setup, or it's an unmitigated disaster. There are NO sensible solutions if it's not working well for you....... except to replace it. Once upon a time it did a nice job, but for most of us now it isn't worth the continuing aggravation and limitations, especially when there are so many worthy contenders - several of which are free! (I used AVG Free for years, but even that got bloated and slow... now I use avast!, which works well and quickly.)

I thought I would give this one a try side by side with another earlier giveaway called Inpaint. It installed and registered fine on a windows 7 64 bit computer.

I ran the same picture taking out the same things and Inpaint ended up being far superior to this one. The algorithm they use recognizes shadows and lines (like sunlight rays) and removed anything in the sunlight ray while replacing everything perfectly (it was a picture of some dogs lying in a line of sunlight coming through a door across a living room, I removed 1 dog).

Unfortunately PhotoStampRemover could not replace the sunlight rays properly, left shadows and bits however many times I tried to remove the bits or fix the line of sunlight which had now become worse.

I would buy Inpaint, it's a lot smarter with recognizing what it needs to do.

On XPsp3 installed easily. This was a GOTD offer some time ago, and I had little problems with it. I'm not a graphics guru by any means and I've been using another GOTD offer (Inpaint Graphic Editor Tool v3) once in a while when making episode graphics for a TV database. I just tried this one out and it works a little better than Inpaint on the same graphic. Does NOT do 100%, but often 90-95% and that saves a great deal of time for me. This program does take some practice, but considering the cost today, it's worth the effort and it's going on a laptop I just built for myself. Thank you GOTD for this update.

Chris, I agree with you about the results being "a mess". I tried this with solid-color watermark, semi-transparent watermark and what seemed to be a solid-color time stamp. Only 1 of 5 worked well. With a solid-color background, it seems to work okay, but with scenics, it just doesn't work. To wit, it left a large and objectionable blob of color. Oh well, back to the clone tool.

I downloaded on to my laptop with Vista 32.
First removal was time stamp did not to bad, I suppose just because I know what was removed I could see the blurry area. I lowered the scale to 25 and it was greatly improved. Second removal was something on a puddle in the picture removed it with no probems at all was perfect. I really do not think this was designed to remove true water marks as that I would guess is illegal. All in all it is a keeper for me for small jobs, Thanks for the program!

XP SP3
version 4.2

includes CHM help file.

clean install, 5 MB.
installs into directory of your choice.
start menu/desktop icon creation are optional.

registers easily with the given key.

after you select an area & remove it, you can undo it,
but the selected area does not persist, so you must
re-select it. a BIG OVERSIGHT IMO.

remove & quick remove work differently & depending on
the subject matter one may work much better then the
other. on more difficult areas, remove looks to do a
better job. areas with generally solid backgrounds,
quick remove looks to do better.

like if you wanted to remove a "button" from a dialog
box, quick remove removes it, replacing it with the
background color, where remove tends to leave artifacts.

now with a more diverse background & more diverse selected
area & in particular with the free form tool, quick remove
seems to leave things in a poor looking "blur", where
remove does a much better job in matching its surroundings.

an animated gif looses its animation upon saving (though
i suppose that is to be expected).

the select tool icon should change to show whether the
rectangle or free form selection method is active. &
better yet would be the ability to select the tool from
the an icon dropdown (rather then having to select it
from Menu | Tools).

you must EXPLICITLY save your changes. if you have made
changes & tell the program to Exit, it does just that,
no questions asked. another BIG OVERSIGHT IMO.

having never used a program like this & just messing
around, I have no idea what its competition might be
able to do? seems easy to use & works well IMO.

i'm impressed.

for a quick 1-2-3, it's not perfect, but it's not bad.

Very nice application...
Tested by F-Secure and found ok

I left Norton years ago...around 2005... coz it would slow down my pc and it would always replace the system files with its own.
This always caused problems during uninstallation.
To me at that time I felt that Norton itself was the virus on my machine
Dont know abt the current versions of Norton since I dont follow it and dont have any intentions of returning back to it

Hmmm, I'm not impressed. I tried to remove a calendar that was behind me on the wall of a photo I took with my webcam one day. Oh my. It picked up the shine of light on my hair and gave me a beehive out the side of my head. Scary looking. I agree that it works on small things pretty good, but on larger things in a zoomed in mode, not so great at all. I think InPaint works better. I wish I still had it. Hopefully GOTD will offer it again soon.

tried it with multiple texture sizes and i gotta say this software ain't worth its price. by the results,i'd say this setting determines the size of the brush used to cover the logo/watermark area you select with a texture generated by the contents of the area you select and pretty doubt this software even 'knows' where the watermark is but most likely blindly fills the selection with the surrounding pattern. the algorhytm should be far more advanced then this.

Re: My comment #26 above. There are a certain small percentage of companies on this website who claim that their software can be installed on older operating systems, when that is not so. These companies should be called out and their product claims challenged. So I don't know why all of you clicked "no" to indicate that my comment was "unhelpful"

I was really hoping that SoftOrbits would provide or recommend an immediate fix, but that has yet to happen.

Watermarks take forever and in fact it only does what Windows Live Photo gallery does. in other words if you want to get this to get rid of watermarks just keep the Windows Live version, works just as good a maybe a bit better!

Wow, to #17;- If Inpaint is better than than this one then I will just have to download and see how bad it is for myself! When I tried Inpaint it was removed from my computer very quickly!
Will post my evaluation of Photo Stamp Remover later.

I had this program last time it was offered, but I got a new computer recently,so I was happy to it offered again. I like this program because it's easy for a beginner like myself to use...it installs easy, navigation through instructions is good, and it does what it says it does, with excellent results. I suggest that anyone who has old photos they want to clean up,get this program!

To those having the 'Norton Problem', you might want to do a little research on Norton before taking everything it tells you as gospel.

Installed & activated smoothly on Vista. Quick test on one image (remove an antenna from the roof of the building) - bad result, using rectangular selection. Slightly better, but still not very impressive, using marker tool. INPAINT 3.0 seems to provide much better results. Uninstalled.

I tried this out on several clipart images
that I grabbed from the internet... and
the output was total garbage.

I entered an image from my PC and just tried
removing several objects and was amazed
at how well they were disappeared.

Didn't have anything with a date stamp
on it so can't vouch for that aspect..

I used screen hunter and copied an image
and also just "save image as" (same image)
and removed the same object from both...
outcome was the same on both images....
reasonably good removal of quite a large
object.

It does a really HORRIBLE job in removing
watermarks :)

So, forget removing watermark from images

Runs fine on Win 7 x64. It's OK on small areas, not so good on larger ones. I also found it to be quite slow on a core 2 quad 2.3ghz with 6gb memory. Where is the "Free Form Select" that is used on the demo? It seems to have been replaced by the "Marker". "Free Form Select" would have been more useful IMO, but why not have both?

I reckon it is very useful for removing dust bunnies and hot pixels, but it needs work for larger areas. I'm grateful for the giveaway, but I think the program needs some work and a lower price.

this program installed on my Pc xp,sp3 with no problems, it self authenticates
I tried this on some text I had put on a christmas card and it took 2 swipes to clean it, but it did not distort the picture in any way.
Thank you GOTD and to the company for a great piece of software.
I have photoshop and it was quicker to load this program and remove the text than loading up photoshop and using the clone tool.
for small one off item this is perfect.

I installed the program with no problems. I tested a couple of photos and found the results unacceptable for both. A free form selection tool would be more preferable and might help to produce better results. My laptop crashed (BSOD) and it may be mere coincidence that it happened after installing and using this software, but since that's all I did up until that point and I received an error when trying to track the installation, I uninstalled it. I would have been bummed had it actually worked on my photos bu t I produced better results using the clone tool in Serif PhotoPlus X3 and Zoner (ZPS13). I am sure any of the other photo editing software programs would do better.

Norton Internet Security 2012 did not detect any problems with the setup file at all. I wouldn't recommend one security software over another as, in addition to their features, there seems to be issues with hardware/software compatibility. I buy the 3-user pack and have found in previous versions that an issue may occur on one pc that does not occur on any other, even when the same software is installed on both. Norton seems to address problems with each new version and my only issue with the last one was that it would sometimes quarantine files based on experiences of the Norton community (which makes no sense to me at all). It was time consuming to find where the files were hidden. But outside of that, I would get rid of files that were deemed a threat when I had no knowledge to the contrary. I am unfamiliar with Sonar. Oh and I don't like Norton Browser add ons either but I don't want care for any persistent add ons in general.

Just as an aside...re Norton Internet Security 11. I use this and had no problems installing or using this software (from this standpoint at least)...Norton did not flag it, or delete anything at all. Win7 64bit SP1.

Thanks to SoftOrbits and GOTD.

Easily installed and registered.

Tested it on one of my photos snapped off a TV broadcast with two logos. Result - the software's performance is more than good enough for me. Passed.

If one wants to nitpick on the finer aspects, such as the replacement colour not an exact shade with perfect texture and pattern of the background - yes you can.

But what is the point of nitpicking? Just to show how smart one is?

Install OK on Windows 7.
Tested and found it to be of very poor quality to be of any value. Image area gets filed with random pieces of objects around it.

Better erasing tools are out there in larger photo progranms i.e. PhotoImpact 10 and Microsoft Digital Image Studio 10.

XP+SP3 - installed and ran ok.

Tried it on a few pics and the results were poor compared to Inpaint, also a GOTD giveaway.

Downloaded, installed and registered with no problems on win 7 64 bit laptop.

I have given it a good try on various photo's with various backgrounds and have found the results disappointing.

The alterations/removals are clearly visible and actually even different blocks of colour are inserted which are completely different to the surrounding area.

This was with trying to remove quite large watermarks and so I tried doing the same with a smaller area and regrettably the results were the same.

I know this will be no consolation to the people who missed the excellent giveaway 'Inpaint', but it is far superior and I used it on the same photo's as a comparison with better results.

Thanks GAOTD and SoftOrbit for the opportunity to try this software, but it isn't a keeper IMHO.
