#38, Caed, Microsoft Research AutoCollage 2008 is much easier for novices, but also has features for those who can read Help files. It's fully automated, you just give it some pictures and tell it how many you want in the result collage, and it will automatically select, crop, zoom, arrange, and blend the photos. Of course, the Fubar-haters, vote-manipulators, and the people who are so poor that they can't afford $20 vote my comments down, and almost no one reads previous-day comments, but AutoCollage has a free trial for those intelligent enough to compare it to all of the other collage-makers. Some OEMs put AutoCollage 2009, which is touch-enabled and otherwise not available, on some Win7 computers.

With Windows Vista: “Failed To Create Empty Document”

As suggested earlier, right clicked on desktop shortcut and set Windows compatibility mode to be compatible with Windows XP (SP2). Programme then worked quite well.

After programme opened, clicked on "register" button (top right corner). Indication that this is registered as a giveaway. Clicked "x" to close the registration window.

Tested programme and it seems to work well, except that there is no undo. I made a mistake of clicking on one of the random modes and it removed ALL of the photos I'd already selected. Apparently no way to undo that!

Installed flawlessly on my Win7 x64 machine. It's good I remembered to close the new program before Activating it. It registered to giveawayoftheday without any trouble at all. I've been looking for a nice program like this for a while now. Thanks so much, GAOTD and SnowFox!

Hi, I would call this Software's claim: "With this digital software, you can extend your creativity to the most" - a gross OVERSTATEMENT!, lol..

What "creativity"? Adding coloured boarders to photos (with shadow of your choice, wow!) and arranging them in a shape of heart, circle, or squarish looking page of pictures (you probably get more choices in average Photo Printing Programs?) - supposed to pass as "Creative Collage Maker/Designer" - most of people are familiar with?? Oh, let's not forget Adding Text!:)

Sorry Developer, with all this in mind - I am struggling to see how it can be called.. Creative (forgive me), and what's more - charging for it nearly $30 ?? Come on!

But - This is purely my Opinion and I wouldn't like to spoil Anybody's fun here!
Program is light, easy to use and might attract Someone who likes simple functions, as I'm sure this Software will deliver just (and only) that.

Being on "photo fun" subject today, my latest simple joy:) came in a shape of (free) "PhoXo" ( http://www.phoxo.com/en/ ), if/when installing, miss few added "optionals".., Enjoy Your Sunday!

Thanks GAOTD for this Offer, even if it didn't personally impress me, and for the Game:)

I dunno what is wrong with you people. This is a very basic program being offered for FREE It doesn't require a lot of computer savy so that even the most novice pc users can create something beautiful for themselves. So what that you think you can do much better in programs x,y, or z? This is a good basic program for newbie computer graphics makers. Several of my friends who have tried other programs and couldn't figure them out are delighted with this program. When I was new to the computer, I would have loved this. I'm going to keep it around for a while and play with it some more before I decide if I have any need for it myself.

Thank you GOTD and SnowFox for making several of my friends very happy today. I have quite a few pc newbie friends who have downloaded and installed this program and called me to crow about it. I love having happy friends.

Dear SnowFox,

I tried this program by installing on Windows 7. It failed on me by showing pop up message "Failed to create empty document". Then, after that it shut down. I read that it can be run by choosing XP SP 3. I saw some people wrote that it can work XP SP 2. Please fix this issue. Thank you.

Also got the ‘failed to create empty document"
message. Running in XP compatability mode at
least got it running. Kinda sad when a program
being currently sold won't run on a newer OS
than XP. Seems kinda outdated.

not a bad program- quite easy- definitely not for PRO, done a free collage;
be careful with resizing and rotating individual pics too quickly, program
seems to get stuck easily,
another good -now free- photo program, also collages (templates plenty)

also on CNET , good reviews, but more complicated for some, more precise for others

When a program like this is offered, I always like to see samples of what the prog can do, by vising the vendor's website. NOT ONE SAMPLE! How poor. I am not going to clutter my computer by installing a program without knowing what it can do.

For simple install xp first run setup and allow desktop icon then at last setup screen uncheck box to run program... do not run program. Then run activate program and close the snowfox and gotd website pop-ups. Finally go to desktop and run program... it should be registered to gotd... finished. Worked for me first time. Hope this helps.

Tried it out and created a test collage. Saved the project as an jpg image, and exited. Upon returning, nothing appeared under the "recent documents". Had to start over. Would be nice to be able to pick up where one left off and not have to start over from scratch.

But again - very easy to use, target audience should be those who do not want to learn any of the other more complex packages and just get something done quickly.

Thanks #2 for taking the time to write all of that.

I downloaded this to my Windows 7 (64 bit) and it wouldn't run (gave an error message about "no file" or something like that). I right clicked the desktop icon to explore, and one of the options was compatibility. After clicking on this and picking sensible choices, the compatibility program ended by saying there were compatibility issues. Since the program was working, another checkbox in this compatibility program allowed you to keep these settings, which I did.
The icon now started the program which seems to me to be working very well!

A nice little program for your photo toolbox! Thanks!

Followed the instructions. Than ran activate.exe, which brought up the http://www.snowfoxsoft.com website. Then...nothing. How do I get the registration code? Why does GOTD have to have extra steps to activate and/or register the software? This is the first time in a long time where I gave up.

I totally agree with #2.
This is a LOW-TECH collage maker. The sort you get free with photo maniplation software, with just a few extra tweaks.

To register, you need to close programme then re-start it (not PC)after you ACTIVATE it.

PROS
It's free today.
You can move pics around and move forward/back.
You can save in BMP JPG TIF PNG and GIF
Pics can be rotated in free template (only when you click on photo and point to centre circle in the photo, very awkward).
Lots of fonts ( but no font preview).Lots of page resolutions (pixels).

CONS
Templates very limted.
No masks or backgrounds.
Total lack of options to do anything else like posterize, etc

SUMMARY
Handy to have but no way would you pay for it. Compared to Picture Collage Maker in last weeks GIVAWAY this is an amateur.

Installed with no problems, Activation easy and straight forward. (win7 32)
The programs its self is straight forward and easy to use, you'll be making your first collage within moments of installing.

There are other programs with more options but if you don't have this sort of software this is a good place to start.

It is worth $29.00? Maybe, maybe not, but as it costs nothing here the cost is a bit of a mute point..... ;-)

My software doesn't activate on Windows 7 64Bit and still says "trial version" when I start it. I checked by creating a collage and saving the image. The saved image had a water mark saying, "Unregistered Version". The "Activate.exe" ran successfully and said it activated the software. When I click on "About" it says, "Version 1.1.0 GOTD Version". Go figure. I'll check back later today to see if anybody has posted a response and/or if somebody else had similar problems.

Ciao,
VBH

Some free alternatives, most of them with more templates and options.

* online initiatives
About a hundred different templates for grouping pictures ranging from only a couple up to a dozen or more. You choose a template, load pictures from your computer and once the photos are loaded you can crop, resize, rotate and reposition them on the canvas. You can add background images and even text on your collage. The final collage can be downloaded as 1024x768 or 1600x12000 JPG image.

Creating photo collages from your photos online. Create realistic photo montages and add cute frames to your photos. Also comes with many single-photo effects!

To top it off... This one isn't that 'advanced' but gets the job done anyway : )

* Windows / Other
Description: Over 2300 Collage Resources(Frames, Masks, Cliparts, Backgrounds). Includes 48+ templates for building collage. Share your collage through any medium, including desktop wallpaper, printed copies, email and more. (Pro version available too.)
Choose from collage templates. Decorate your photo collage with frames, masks, text and cliparts. Use image effects to make your photos look like faded on the edges, old-fashioned, etc.
-- http://download.cnet.com/Photo-Collage-Creator/3000-2192_4-10802594.html (30 day TRIAL)
If you only want to do this once... This is a good one too!
Yes, Picasa can do this too :)
You can then resize the pictures, move them to show a specific area through the frame and add countless different frames for style. All pictures appear with a white border and there is no way to get rid of them, unfortunately. There are more than one hundred templates on offer. **
-- http://www.enricoros.com/opensource/fotowall/
Fotowall is an open source software that lets you make collages and word clouds. There are no templates or grid layouts to choose from. You add photos to the canvas and arrange their position by hand, individually. But it does have a cool feature called “Force field”. When turned on, pictures arrange themselves as if they are acted upon by forces of attraction and repulsion. This tends to produce better results. You can freeze the photos while they are in motion by turning of “Force field”. **

Installation on x86 Vista went just fine. Before I press Finish to start the program, I also ran Activate.exe.

When the program started first, whatever I did, I could not figure out how to operate it.

Re-starting the program fixed all my confusion : ) Problem? First time, with me, there was no template selected - only a gray area was visible.

This program makes a photo collage - not to burn on dvd, but to save as a new picture (for your scrapbook?).

Templates are: grid (side by side), classic (grid with two big pictures), free (random overlapping), circular & heart.

Two other options: Fill & Random. Fill changes the photos of the collage in to a new order. Random re-arranges the lay-out of the pictures (egg, stacking differently).

The result can ber saved in jpeg, tiff, png, bmp or gif.

All in all, this is not a tech-tool but a fun tool to have lying around - might be nice to occasionally print a photo collage for someone as a souvenir.

Thanx, and... Peace!

Devvie
