Editing PDFs is easy if you have the right software. I use Smart PDF Converter because it is the most accurate one, and it’s very easy to use. http://www.pdftodocconverterpro.com

Sucks! Don't bother.
It is a repackaging of qvPDF and some other components for PDF conversion with a customised front-end. It looks like someone ripping off other free tools to try to make a quick buck.
The open source PDFCreator is much better for PDF authoring and there are other equivalent free tools for PDF conversion.
The uninstaller also leaves lots of crap behind, including the C:\Program Files\qvPDF directory and other registry entries.

I would recommend these alternatives: "CutePDF" virtual printer for converting any document to PDF. "Very PDF PDF2Word" to convert PDF files to Word for editing and the "Microsoft Office 2007 Compatibility patch" for converting 2007 files to 2003 or earlier formats. All very stable, fast, good results and use very little resources. Although it means using more than one program, it's so easy and hassle free that it justifies the little bit of extra effort.

Hi, in my comment (#34, I made a mistake:

"Converting from PDF is buggy", not "converting to PDF". Sorry.

Also, another con I just found out, sometimes I can't cancel the conversion process by clicking 'cancel' or 'X' button when asked where to save the PDF file.

I installed PDFTiger and tried to create a PDF from 1) an OpenOffice document file and 2) a plain text file. It prints both files immediately and dos not create a PDF file. Any suggestions on what I may have don wrong during installation? Thanks

Thanks all for the comments, since I'm primarily looking for PDF to DOC conversion I think I'll skip this one.

To answer some of the other comments

Last night I tried Ashraf's suggestion, eXPert PDF. I had no luck with V4, couldn't download from their site, and the download from the link in Ashraf's blog was missing files. Then I tried the V5. In general I liked it, even though it goes to RTF rather than DOC (trivial issue). Unlike other converters I've tried it didn't use a text box for every line, except in a few special circumstances (ie when there was a callout in the margin). Most of the time it did a good job of selecting fonts, placing text, graphics and headers etc. There were a few "interesting" conversions too. Actually, in one case it picked up some "ghost" characters. It converted a callout that was not visible in the PDF. I don't know where it came from but it was completely logical that the text was placed there. Maybe someone used "liquid paper" to white-out the callout in the PDF? ;)

#32 I also use PDF-Xchange Viewer as my default PDF reader, specifically for it's great markup functions. I found text copy and paste one page at at time too time consuming to do many documents or large document. I spent a year in University converting PDF class note handouts into editable text/doc files. That is why I continue to look for better PDF to DOC/RTF/Text converters.

#36 My guess about strange install location was confirmed by #48. Apparently they did a poor job of renaming/rebranding an existing program.

For those who are interested after uninstalling the £ programs installed by PDF Tiger using it's own uninstaller I still found 802 regitry entries it had left behind as well as another 55 files/folders in various places. Now it might be a usable program but I prefer when people clean up after themselves and not leave a mess for me to do it.

I recommend Revo Uninstaller to anyone who is going to uninstall this because that is what found all the registry garbage etc that Pdf Tiger left behind on my pc for me to get rid of!!

My last post showed my newbieness at this because after reading an article about PDF Tiger I have since found that it installs three seperate programs in order to do the job it says it does, and this results in three separate uninstalls and apparently a host of registry entries left behind that needs a professional uninstaller to get rid of them if you don't like it and want to get rid of it.

I alreadyy don't like it due to the fact of not being informed of the 3 separate programs , but hey that's me! Others might already love it too!

I am somewhat sceptical about this program because all I wanted was the PDF Converter and back again BUT it has also downloaded and installed a program for adding printer drivers onto my pc and any other printer that connects to my network.

I never gave permission for this but I still got it even though I don't need it and don't want it!!

Makes the rest of the program somewhat suspect I think because what else did it put on my pc without my agreement?

#49: "...I used a recent photo file that contained 261 jpg images and chose to convert the entire file to a PDF file format. I realize this is a huge file to do and it took approximately 2hrs45min to totally complete this task. The file in my computer was 228MB total and the file when converted contained 261 pages ( 1 image per page ) and the total size of the PDF file was 285MB.
All in all – I have no idea if this is good or not..."

PDFTiger *might* not be as fast as some, relying as it does on some separate, cli (Command Line Interface or DOS prompt) apps & code. [I say *might* because I don't know that anyone's put it through such an extreme test before.] OTOH, Printing to PDF with any software goes through many of the same processes as printing with an actual printer, and they can take a while. Images take longer than text when/if they're processed rather than just copied into a new PDF container. PDF Creator has options to set the dpi (resolution) & ICM (Color Matching). eXPert PDF has options for downsampling the image (reducing resolution, usually for on-screen viewing rather than print), & jpg image compression levels. PDF Tiger doesn't appear to have an included manual or help file, & the docs that come with the gvPDF it's partly based on are in German, so I've no idea what it does or doesn't do with images. Decreasing resolution or downsampling & using higher compression levels makes PDFs smaller than the original images, but also reduce quality so it's a trade-off.

OK, for those who didn't get my comment #19, here's the deal. Run a Whois on the PDFTiger website. They're anonymous. They're using open-source software without obeying the license and charging for it. They're using code from qvPDF, which is why components to send emails and upload to FTP sites gets installed. That's also why there are components which support HylaFAX. PDFTiger is also illegally using an HP printer driver for its PostScript abilities.

The reason we're getting a lot of crapware is that the vast majority of you just don't get it. Giveaway of the Day isn't a freeware site. If you want freeware, GOTD has a freeware library. It doesn't help that GOTD is giving Ashraf special treatment, when, apart from not having the skills for a technical review and diverting traffic to his own blog, he doesn't understand that GOTD isn't a freeware site. Developers aren't going to support GOTD as long as the no-time-limit (after the 24-hour installation period), non-reinstallable, non-upgradeable trial software which they offer here isn't converting into sales.

I never found a program that can create a true 1:1 picture quality of an image in pdf. I have pictures of graphs in pdf that I need to put into word. I can read the graphs in pdf, but when converting to an image file, the graphs are unreadable.

Hopefully this program will solve that problem. Since I have 100 seperate pdfs with graphs in it. Batch conversion would be a timesaver.

Cons:
1.No option to cancel if you dont want the pdf file, even if program is closed windows dialog box opens and asks to save file no matter if you click on cancel
2.Once you select a file there is no progress bar /some activity to show that it is in processing state. This confuses alot especially for huge size files
3.Taking lot of time to convert txt files of large size.

I am going to uninstall this as it does not meet my requirements.

I was able to download and register without problem on my PC, and I immediately converted my resume from Word to PDF and was able to correct a couple of spelling errors. I'm using XP2 SP3. Now I'm trying to download it to my laptop using the same OS, but when I click on the link and the mirror #1, I get a "Bad Gateway" message. Is this because of my laptop, or is there a problem? The software worked very well on my PC, so I'll give you a thumb halfway up......

This works OK. It creates though 2 different subdirectories under Program Files (?). Why is that?
It's kind of luxury thingy, not necessity, like all PDF programs. One don't really need them if have MS Office, for example.
I've tried NitroPDF and i regard it as more accurate, faster, reliable than this one.

When it comes to converting PDF to Word, or Word to PDF, or editing,

or separating into segmens or combining segments together in a specific order, there are 3 good paid programs. Adobe Professional which is several hundred dollars, or Nuance PDF Converter which is good and I have it and it works well, costs about $100. There is also a very good less expensive alternative for $60 for the Pro edition and $40 for the regular edition. It is called PDF Suite 9 at www.pdf-suite.com. I have this one also. It converts back and forth, edits, combines parts, and does several other functions.

PDF Suite 9 is the least expensive good, reliable Paid PDF program that I have found up to date. When you open it the format layout is just like looking a microsoft word 2007 layout. Very easy and intuitive to use, do not need to do any manual training. Very fast and easy and least expensive good paid program I have found to date.

If you want something more expensive Nuance PDF Converter is very good and about $40 more expensive.

Through work I have Adobe PDF Professional, but I still use PDF Suite 9 first because it is easy and fast to use and it works very well.

Ok - let me say first off - PDF files are new to me and this is the first time I have ever created one.
The program downloaded, installed and ran fine on my vista home premium 32-bit operat. sys. laptop. To registar program - clicked buy now and copied the key in the read me file there and then restarted the program - whoo hoo - registared.
Them I put the program to a test of converting a photo file. The photo file was a total of 228MB and contained 261jpg images. I know - a huge undertaking for first timers - but what can I say.
The whole process took about 2hrs45mins - seems like a long time - but it might not be - as it is my first I wouldn't know. When done the PDF file contained 261 pages - that's 1 image per page - so far so good. Each image was clean and crisp and I was happy with the results - feeling they are good enough to send out. The size of the PDF file surprised me. Up until now I thought that PDF files were supposed to be small in size - I think now that I am wrong on that as the file ended up larger with 285MB. The convinience of sending one file being a little larger as opposed to 261 seperate files ( which seems masive in undertaking ) is a good thing in my mind.
I have not converted any text, but with the test of the images - I believe the text will work fine.
Thanks GOTD - I may not use it much - but it will come in handy when I do. Keep up with all the work you put in for us and have a fun and safe day.

ok - here it goes...
I have a Vista home premium 32-bit operating system laptop. I had no trouble downloading, installing or registaring the progra.
I am not familiar with making PDF files so this was a first for me - and did I give it a test - lol.
I used a recent photo file that contained 261 jpg images and chose to convert the entire file to a PDF file format. I realize this is a huge file to do and it took approximately 2hrs45min to totally complete this task. The file in my computer was 228MB total and the file when converted contained 261 pages ( 1 image per page ) and the total size of the PDF file was 285MB.
All in all - I have no idea if this is good or not - seemed to take a long time to convert - but that could be normal for such a large file. I did think that a file converted to PDF format took up less space, but as it turns out it actually takes more space. So - again - not sure if this is good or bad - you will have to judge that for yourself. The images in the PDF file look great - clear and crisp so I am happy about that.
I did not try to convert anything with text - but feel confident after the photos that it will work well.
For me - I like this - keep in mind - it was the first time I have ever created a PDF file.
Thanks GOTD and have a fantastic day.

Making this short 'cause my 1st attempt posting got a site error...

PDFTiger is largely a re-packaging or remake of the open-source gvPDF. It has a rather unusual install or setup file, so if you have install problems, *might* be why. As already posted it uses some HP printer driver software [from the .inf file: HP Color LaserJet 4550 PS PRINTER], & this itself can cause problems -- using Google a few hits also said you don't want duplicates of the driver files, so *might* be a problem for some HP printer owners.

As with most anything PDF, the software you use to create the PDFs determines how the PDF file is set up internally -- similar to creating a document in Microsoft Office, then comparring that file with one in Microsoft format out of WordPerfect or OpenOffice, they may *look* virtually identical, but internally there are differences. Those sorts of differences wreak havoc with convertors -- sometimes they just don't know what to look for. Mileage will & does vary depending on where your PDFs come from -- i.e. how they were created.

TO get content out of PDF files, often Copy/Paste works just fine -- adding any formatting in a word processor often takes less time than correcting *converted* output. When you can't copy/paste, there's always screenshots & OCR. For creating PDF files, there are all sorts of virtual printers -- I like PDF Creator, & Adolix makes one that's been on GOTD, & though it doesn't always work, when it does it includes hyperlinks. eXpert PDF from Vissagesoft is a popular, but cumbersome IMHO alternative... You can edit multipage PDF docs, adding links etc., but for simple printing to PDF there's far better.

I never actually tried it, but by reading your comments I can see that this doesn't work. I recommend PrimoPDF . It adds itself as a printer and can make pdfs from any program that can print. The basic edition is freeware and I have been using for a while now to convert word files with pictures and simple word files with text an it worked fine. There are several quality options and you can password protect a pdf.

OUCH!! What a mess. Converted a PDF document to Word. All the photos were relegated to the bottom of the Word document. Text is on top of other text. Graphics are stretched and distorted. Text and graphics extend beyond columns. Some text is converted to wingdings or just plain garbage characters.

Developers need to go back to the drawing board on this one. I'd be glad to email them a sample PDF to work with if they contact me.

This appears to be a near clone of PDFZilla, as both programs have the same features and GUI layout... probably little more than a skin change. It did okay with image extraction for me if the PDF was not password protected or encrypted. No image format settings were given such as quality level, but many standard output formats are given.

#11: "So far none of these PDF proxies (to the Acrobat Pro) can create a PDF from a scanner,"

OCR software ABBYY Finereader Express 9 does this, & was recently offered for free [perhaps they'd like a shot on GOTD?] -- may want to watch out for it as they seem to be using it as a promo to sell their version 10 pro app.

* * *

#18: "But what I also wanted was anchor text links that were active. So I wanted to be able to write the words “click here” for example, and have the full ugly HTTP address embedded underneath and have it work as a clickable link."

A previous GOTD from Adolix works as a PDF printer, & *Sometimes* carries the links over from the a page to the PDF -- if it works for you, that could be a solution. Alternatively Vissagesoft [Avanquest] products (eXpert PDF...) have long had the ability to add links to your PDFs manually.

@dan, #39:
'Does PDFTiger let you open an existing PDF for edit and allow you to save your changes as a PDF?'

No is does not, but still you can do so.
First: convert your PDF to DOC
Second: edit the DOC the way you like it to be.
Third: print it back to a PDF
There you go.

Going from PDF to DOC is less accurate then going from DOC to PDF.
This may cause some extra work, depending on the kind of document (format-compexity) you started out with.

OK, so I have done some limited testing and overall, am pleased with the results. I see a number of serious complaints above, none of which happened to ME. YMMV... First, I installed on a Windoze 98se laptop. I KNOW... it does not say W98 in the requirements box, but I tried anyway. Only 1 problem during the install, the printer install part failed and it opened several windows saying it was "finishing" before it finally DID finish. I had to kill 3 "finishing" alerts with the task manager before it continued and finished. I then tried running the program. It started. I clicked on the REGISTER button and it registered. I then tried two tests, the same PDF into HTML and WORD files. Both took only a few seconds, surely much less than a minute per megabyte in the source PDF file. I opened the DOC files in Word 97. I was pleased to see only ONE formatting error, what was BOLD print ended up as doubled letters, like the really OLD dot matrix printers used to make darker text which used a simple backspace and overprint the same letter again. I have no doubt this came about because I have NO printer installed on the laptop and the default IS a teletype style printer. Otherwise, formatting and image placement was as the PDF had things, or at the least, close enough. The HTML output had one significant problem, syntax for external files and images. Firefox told me it could not find a protocol for the external files. When I looked over the HTML, I saw the problem immediately. It used src="C:\file.ext" when it should have been src="file:///c:\file.ext". I edited the HTML and did a global search and destroy mission to make the change to all the file references in each HTML file and Firefox was then able to open the HTML and display the file including images in more or less an accurate form as the PDF. Does IE care about the "file:///" indicator on an external file? Next, I did the same with my Win XP Pro desktop with the only difference being the printer install stuff worked, but I still got the 3 finishing alerts which stopped responding and 3 register windows thanking me. Results on the same PDF were exactly the same as best as I can tell from skimming the output files. Note that I ONLY tried converting a PDF to WORD and HTML. I have other tools for creating a PDF from WORD or HTML source files.

Summary: Apparently it works on W98 as well as newer with the exception of installing printer drivers. Both had the same 3 windows come up and fail to close. Registration was simple, but I am NOT sure it actually worked on either machine I tried. The register button is still active and when clicked asks for the code. I have not yet tried putting in the code to see what happens. There is no ABOUT button which usually in other apps shows the version number and registration information. Finally, a gripe, the HELP button links to an external web page. What happens if, like me on my laptop most of the time, the machine is NOT connected is that the tutorial page is not found, of course, so what good IS the HELP if it only goes to a remote web page? If I need HELP, it will most likely be when I am NOT connected!

Call it 4 out of 5 stars because of the minor problems I have found, but 5 stars for the actual conversion of PDF to WORD and PDF to HTML. NO other features were tested by me... YMMV...

For ME, this one is a keeper for taking apart PDF's, which before I was not able to do very well.

Oh I meant to mention before..

It installs itself in a location you wouldn't really expect it to.
It creates a directory(folder) C:\Program Files\PDFTiger, but it doesn't install itself there. There are only 3 files there including Setup + UnInstall info.

If you are looking for the program and all associated files they are installed in C:\Program Files\qvPDF

A rather unusual thing to do. I'm not sure what the motivation for that might be. But that's where it actually can be found.

All-in-all though, I find it worthy of a test-run at the very least, and so far it's performed pretty well for me.

PS: FYI For GAOTD. The server here keeps popping up 502 errors - "Bad Gateway" when trying to post. I presume that's why there are some duplicate posts.

Oh I meant to mention before..

It installs itself in a location you wouldn't really expect it to.
It creates a directory(folder) C:\Program Files\PDFTiger, but it doesn't install itself there. There are only 3 files there including Setup + UnInstall info.

Pros:
Convert multiple images to PDF without visible loss of quality
Convert MS Office 2007 & Open Office formats perfectly

Cons:
No customizable options
Convert files to PDF is buggy - loss of tables, images, words become symbols instead
File import is buggy - I have to try a few times to select the documents I want to convert

I have tio agree about the text conversion.........horrible.

I tried all other formats and they worked fine, but couldn't check the Word conversion because it is not installed on my computer.

This seems to be written in Visual Basic 6 which is about 12 years old as it insatlls unneccsary files in the program directory.

PDF Zilla, a recent giveaway does a much better job.

The comments led me not to bother with this one. My favorite way of extracting things from pdf documents--or for that matter, just displaying them--is PDF-Xchange Viewer from Tracker Software. I use it instead of Adobe Reader. Inside a viewed document you can copy text or take snapshots of all or part of a page, or mark it up right in the viewer. No batch processing though.

I also use PDFill for converting large PDF documents to or from image files, or to split/merge them.

Office 2007 has a plug-in to create PDF directly so there's no need for anything special on that end.

Thanks anyway.

Installed OK, didn't register right away. First item to convert and print gave a red ominous Unregisterd, etc. Once I registered via the License code OK. HOWEVER - "Once you start to create a PDF (use the printer), it won’t let you stop/close the window." This is NO joke and I had a document (*.doc it won't do *.docx) of 35+ pages and I had to jump through hoops to stop it from printing. This is a bug that needs to be addressed before I would consider this a serious contender in the PDF Convert programs. I converted a *.doc with embedded images - no go - garble. I would have to say for simple stuff this is OK. #22 & #23 - I use this feature and it works great, I also wanted to do this from my Notepad ++. However, The one glitch/bug makes this a No Go for me as does itself making it the Default Printer (No, No, No). Even Task Manager couldn't remove it.

Thanks for all your efforts GAOTD.

lost my ability to print on my printer until I uninstalled the program. This one is a bummer.
