I thought this would be a good product to use to convert PDFs to Word so that the documents could be highlighted and notes added for reference and/or studying purposes. The other day there was a co-worker that had a document (PDF) that was in a column format, but every time he had it converted, the columns were removed. I had him send the PDF to me, and it converted the PDF to and RTF and the formatting was exactly the same. This is the very first program that I have tried that if I ever had to reformat my system or replace it, I would be more than happy to purchase it. I know this is a late comment, but I always want to make sure something is good before I state that it is. Thanks Give away of the Day for making this available!

Fubar #38 - Unfortunately for me, I didn't see your warning before I installed. I've been getting nothing but blue screen after a re-boot. I had to go into safe mode to uninstall, and I have done a system restore, but still system blue screens. I have Win XP SP2 - what else can I do to restore system health?

As far as GOTD, you guys need a BIG disclaimer that says "our programs may be beta, and they MIGHT screw up your systems and cause countless hours of wasted time and severe headaches - otherwise they are fine."

I don't know if this post will see the light of day, but be warned concerning this software.

You are a life saver.
'DLL Hell' can be difficult to trace back to the cause.
You will have saved many people from having messed up systems.
I write VB pgms (VB6), and I avoid dependencies (controls) like the plague. Most of my pgms do not require installation. You just pop them into a folder, and they will run.
I wish other developers would 'get on that bandwagon'.
Thanks again,
Rob

I have tried several pdf to word converter programs and i find this one is the same. It can't convert complicated pdf book well. I have try to convert some of my book and the result is bad : the file size of converted file is heavy ( my pdf book is more than 600 pages and it's around 3,5 MB, and the result file is 17,6 MB ), time to load converted file too long, ( my computer using pentium D 3.0 Ghz, 2G of RAM ) and there are some page dislay in unkown format ( meaningless content ). Mathematic equations are not converted well. It only converts well other simple content in pdf file. Sorry but have to say, this program is not good and not worth for me. Maybe in the future, the author of this program can repair these problems.

Sorry if this is somewhat redundant, but comments from about processing files with embedded scans are mostly on the mark (22, 55, 92, 149, 160, 161, 172, 211, 221, 227). Adobe's ISO open standard PDF format is merely a secure wrapper for integrating formatted text and objects (like images) for publication. If the PDF was built from images, PDF to Word rewraps the contained images into a functionally similar Word RTF format. You can't get text with PDF to Word if the original source didn't contain text.

Do you wish to convert the embedded scanned images into text? After running PDF to Word, select the images in Microsoft Word, save them into BMPs or other picture files, then point your OCR software to them. This is likely too much work unless there's lots of text - or you type v-e-r-y slowly.

This is truly a PDF to Word utility. You pretty much have to have MS Word to open & edit the output file - and appreciate the accurate rendering. BTW, the RTF format is owned by Microsoft (and is a working file format on both Mac and Windows platforms). Also as noted in #165, WordPerfect (I also used X3) chokes on PDF to Word output, performing only a basic level of conversion.

If you wish to grab a PDF, quickly convert it and use its style and graphical layout, this sure beats building a document from scratch. Despite some predictable problems with fonts (if the font isn't embedded in the document, and not on your PC, just what is the utility to do?), this utility is pretty accurate with formatting and composition. I'd give it a 9 out of 10 for streamlined functionality.

I'll defer to others about program registration and (de-)installation issues.

Thanks, GAOTD and SmartSoft, for a keeper!

I download this program, I was so excited to get it. Two days ago I downloaded a free one elswhere. The one I downloaded from you worked great! Only downfall was the pictures. They all had lines in them. The one I downloaded two days ago, the pictures were great but takes longer to use and the formatting is not as good! I really like this one on here but wish they could do something to make the pictures look better!

One of the best GAOTD products yet. I tried small (1-page text only) up to a 9 meg digital camera manual and all worked well. As others said, some of the images (especially ones in color) don't make it over 100%, but I will take 99% which is about 50% better than any other pdf to Word app I have tried.

HI :-)
I have Adobe Acrobat and as you know, the function to convert into WORD format is included.
Anyway, I downloaded PDF-to-Word (XP SP3)and no problem at all.
I converted a 65 pages in less than 2 minutes.
Just one problem: if your document includes mathematical functions, the conversion is a mess (for the math part, not for the rest).
But even Adobe Acrobat does not convert math stuff...
Conclusion: If you don't have Acrobat and need to convert math stuff, this is a very good piece of software.
Thank you.

tried this on both xp and vista. Installed fine but even though it said it converted the file it was nowhere to be found. It only converted the sample file, not my pdf that I have downloaded from the web. I HATE pdf files and I just want bits and pieces of it to print. many are so wasteful with lots of borders and stuff. I just want the important info. I was hoping this would let me choose what to print but it did't work. BIG thumbs down. back to paint to manually cut and paste for the few select page if i really need to print.

a handy program. i have a few files i've created in the past that i lost the original for, but still have the PDF I printed to. now i can easily get an editable document back from them without having to spend an arm and a lag to do so (ADOBE Acrobat is super expensive, for example) i like this one :)

the niceties aside, i did find a flaw or two. better than nothing, i absolutely admit. (as i said above, i like this one.) the first pdf i had it convert made some interesting changes to an image. the pdf had a header which includes my personal logo on either side. it is a black sketch of something, with its openings and the background filled with white. this program thickened all of the lines in the image, making it far more unattractive than it was originally. luckily, i have the real image saved, but not everyone will. the second issue is that it seemed to do the same with borders, dividers and lines. i put in a dotted line in the pdf and it came out very thick, not like the original. the text was a bit smaller than it had been but that is surely fixable.

all that being said, i am thrilled to find an easy way to get something out of an old pdf. it will require edits (due to the programs flaws) but at least it is finally editable again.

Thanks GOTD & the company who doesn't seem to have a real name and/or website. I appreciate this great program and look forward to using it :)

Nice little program and it works just fine and fairly quickly. One minor glitch: it won't convert print-protected pdf's. Possibly, what it's doing in it's conversion is actually printing it to a temporary flie (creating and capturing an image of it) and then storing that as an rtf file. Too bad because, since the original pdf is print-protected, nothing gets printed.

Here's the big problem: program says it converted your pdf but it's nowhere to be found on the drive anywhere from desktop all the way down to the lowest My Documents nested folder. Ewww.

DANG. I was hoping it'd convert print-protected pdf's because I spent 8 HOURS capturing a pdf that I needed printed...page by page I went, snapping screen shots of each page. And yes, it was THAT important. Bummer.

But that doesn't negate the fact that it converts normal pdf's just fine and fast.

Thanks GAOTD. By the way, I was the first poster when you offered this last week ... I caught the boo boo about the page limitation. THANKS SO MUCH for pulling it off the shelves - you seriously avoided a meltdown of the comments section. AND, thanks for bringing it back so quickly, I really did want to download it.

TO 235 "this can then easily be saved as a word doc with no loss of formatting." And how do you save it to doc?? If DOC could do what pdf does, would not need PDF files.. but please share it with me, as I would like it to be perfect DOC and match the PDF... For my web pages..

Re the software recommended by No 12 - I also tried this software - today's giveaway is far superior as it converts to a word RTF exactly - this can then easily be saved as a word doc with no loss of formatting. The software No 12 mentions produced distorted graphics and duplicated lines of text - I have already deleted the alternative software and will keep today's giveaway.

#81 et al. How to copy a PDF in under 15 seconds....

If you use the excellent PDF-Xchange instead of the nagging Foxit, you will find two icons on the toolbar. The first allows you to copy images from PDFs and the other allows you to "Copy as plain text".

Click, CTRL-A, CTRL-C, switch to Writer/Word, CTRL-V.

Done.

ome time ago, I bought one of these that actually does what it says but it was expensive. As far as this give away goes, I still installed it even though I didn't need it. Why? because it's quick & easy to use. It can handle most of what I need on my XP Pro SP-2 system.
Having tested it with several test files I copied to a seperate directory, it's a keeper for me. And, I could care less about it's actual conversion being in RTF format. It still gives me a file I can open in Word, modify & save as. As long as it does that, it's good enough for almost any ho,e user.

I convert PDF files to Word all the time but I'm lucky enough to have Adobe Acrobat which has the functionality built in. If I didn't need the full functionality of Acrobat, and just needed to convert PDF files to Word, then this would be a comparatively cheap alternative. Although, as many people have mentioned, there are free alternatives.

On a side issue, for those who like to abbreviate, please note that Giveaway is one word, not two. Therefore the correct abbreviation would be GOTD, not GAOTD. Call me pedantic but doesn't adding a superfluous letter defeat the purpose of abbreviating in the first place?

I do not recommend this program for Paper Port users. I scan all my mail to pdf using Paper Port 9. I create pdf's from Word using Paper Port. I tried to convert documents using today's giveaway of the day. Although a word file was created from the Paper Port pdf's, none of the files were text. Instead, each file was a Word document containing a single item -- a jpg image of the pdf document. I couldn't backspace or delete or edit the text. Instead, all I had was an image file inside a Word document.

As publisher we read "Quick-PDF.com". But when you right-click the EXE file (pdf2word.exe) and go further to "Properties - Version", under "Description" it says "Easy PDF to WORD converter", the copyright is owned by "Extralabs Software" which corresponds to the EULA, end of paragraph 4 (cf. Manual - Introduction).
Extralabs, located in Moscow, have given away 12 of their titels between 1/07 and 3/08, all of them except one (Image Assistant) being internet applications mostly dealing with news/RSS.

Opposed to these 12 giveaways offered before by Extralabs and labeled by GOTD as such, today's giveaway is an Office converter that while being branded to "Extralabs" is published by another company.

Hence my questions: Can we assume Extralabs to be the (sole) developer although they seem to focus on the internet, not the Office market? If so, why (like so often) is the publisher concealing their location and protecting their identity by "WhoisGuard"?

I for one cannot TRUST companies who find a reason for building a "wall of secrets" around them – in this case again including no registry entries of license data at all (besides a "cryptic" binary under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\RNG).

Does anyone know if installing this program on a thumb drive gets around Fubar's objections -

"The installer makes a mess of your Visual Basic Common Controls (languages other than Basic can use them), a common problem. It installs and registers them in its own directory (very bad) and downgrades some entries to version 5 (should be post-SP6). The downgraded entries could affect other applications. If you uninstall this, applications which use the controls will probably stop functioning (certainly if you delete PDF to Word’s Program Files folder). If you don’t want this, uninstall and do a System Restore. While VB controls are installed by applications, not Windows, most people have apps which use them. Of course, they may well already be screwed up on your PC, as Microsoft has never fixed the versioning and installation problems (thank Bill Gates, BASIC is the only thing I know for sure he wrote, and that’s why he stuffs it into everything in Windows). I don’t remember whether the post-SP6 VB Common Controls download from Microsoft fixes things on previous versions of Windows, but it doesn’t on Vista (it installs but doesn’t register them, nor does it fix the registry entries)."

Or, for that matter, can you really run today's GAOTD offering off a thumb drive?

Well, you gurus out there, waddya think?

I wish I could report success, too. But the converted .rtf is nothing like the original .pdf newsletter. Some lines that were left-justified or centered now trail down the page in a column three characters wide. The paragraphs that are relatively similar to the original appear to have side margins of 4" and 1.25" though Page Setup is set for 1.25" on both sides. And the page header was converted to a column one character wide.

Unless someone has recommendations as to why this happened, I'll probably delete the program and go back to my usual "conversion" method: block-and-copy to WordPad. Those formatting repairs are much simpler than what I'll have to do to fix what this program did.
