haven't tried the screen recorder but the scrolling page capture is not nearly as good as the last freeware version of faststone capture
(5.3, http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page4.html#FastStone%20Capture ) as it's touchy to get started and stops part way down the page under win2ksp4.

So far I am NOT Impressed. I tried using the screen capture. Only thing that worked smoothly --It came up fine. Then from then on couldn't figure out how to use it --Choose an area, the selection flashed and poof it was gone. Looked for the image, since there was no prompt for where to save it. When I located their folder the message said the folder was empty. The icon in the task bar does NOT respond to any clicks, left or right. Tried bringing it up from 'All Programs' -- just got a message that it was already running, but I can't get to it! FastStone icon is located right next to this icon in the taskbar, so I clicked on FastStone and NO PROBLEM --it came up immediately, did the selection and save it to where I chose --no muss, no fuss. I'm thinking that I may be able to get to it when I re-boot, so I MIGHT give it another try whenever I decided to re-boot, but all of this should really be unnecessary. It shouldn't be that un-accessible, NONE of any other screen captures work were you couldn't access them.

At first run this seems to be a very usable utility on my Win 7/64 system. I installed and configured it without incident. I will be testing it extensively between now and the March 20th deadline for buying the "regular version" cheaply. Right now, though, it certainly looks like a worthy candidate for my $20... although I'm not entirely clear what the "full" or "regular" version does that the GAOTD version doesn't!

I get the audio to work well with a video recording by changing the settings under the Audio Tab: 11,025 kHz, mono, 8-bit; then click Choose Compressed Format button, change Format to MPEG Layer-3. The default settings did not record audio with the video.

Installed on WinXP and on the Screen Recorder cannot see the text / captions associated with the options (e.g. Full Screen), the screen capture tool is OK. Also, unless I am wrong, the Screen Recorder tool cannot further edit the video file e.g. for adding my custom comments, so I guess I need to get yet another tool to make this happen which in turn means the tool is inferior/incomplete.

BTW, the trick to capturing a scroll window is to not touch the mouse while it's working. Scroll to the top of the window you want to capture, left-click and don;t move the mouse. It will scroll the entire length of the window and pop-open the editor. From that point on you can touch the mouse again...

The scrolling windows Capture is excellent! The ability to add callouts, arrows and text easily is fantastic. This is the best GOTD yet for me. Thanks! I'll definitely help spread the word about great, functional, easy to use apps like that!

Thanks GOTD for this. I've been playing around with this for the last hour and haven't noticed any problems yet.
The only thing i did notice is that the screen recording process can take up alot of space quickly. I recorded the screen in .AVI format for only about 3 minutes, yet the output file was 130 megs.
There are options for other formats, so i tried .FLV and it was fairly large also... about 100 megs.
Which means if someone was to use screen recorder for about a half hour, you would use over 1 gig. not much these days, just something to keep in mind.
Thanks yet again GOTD and PCHand folks. Do we say thanks often enough for the favor the creators of these programs do for us in kindly letting us have/try their software for free?
I think alot of people here at GOTD really do appreciate what you all do for us.
I know i do.

Hello everyone,

a tip for spelling errors : search for the file captureENG.xml and then edit it with any text editor !
Since there is no option to change for another language within the application, I guess you can translate it yourself to any language as long as you save the file to exactly the same name, e.g. "captureENG.xml".

As for me, no problem installing and registering under Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

Like others have said here, I can't get PCHand-Screen Capture to capture the entire scrolling window. I've been testing it on this very GOTD webpage and it always captures the same size image 995 x 6210 pixels and it always stops at message number 28. Well not always. Sometimes it only captures what I see.. no scrolling, even though it's still set for Scrolling Window. Compare that image size with what I captured with IE7-Pro using the same webpage - 1003 x 12004 pixels. PCHand- Screen Capture has some nice features, but it seems to have a limit on the size of the capture of a scrolling webpage. The program also stopped being able to capture a scrolling window at all. I re-installed it and it started working again, but of course I can't do that after today. For those who say it works.. check the size of the captured image.. of whatever window. Is it larger than 995 x 6210 pixels? It only works in Internet Explorer, but IE7-Pro is much faster with the capture, too.

when i capture and image and then go to the toolbar and click on any file heading (e.g. "File", "Edit" etc.) the scoll down list is empty and then my mouse pointer disappears. it works because when you hover over a tab the tab highlights, but the pointer can't be seen.

Can't say I'm overly impressed. DLed, installed & activated OK (both, XP SP2) but program operation leaves a bit to be desired.

The Screen Recorder window is cut off on the right side half way thru the options(?) icon. I can't access help or the minimize and close buttons. I was forced to use Alt-F4 to quit the program.

The Screen Capture program has a few bugs. According to the popup window, the freehand capture region is captured when you release the left mouse button. Not so! All it did was rubber band the mouse and started drawing again if I held the left button down. Right clicking discarded anything captured so that whole operation is useless.

The scrolling window capture didn't. Only got a fraction of the window.

The captures that did work sent me to an edit window that I had to close in order to return to the capture window. So much for the so-called serial capture and edit later feature.

Other than the freehand and scrolling windows, the other capture modes worked fine. Mostly. When I tried the Add Caption mode everything disappeared after the capture - the image, the editor and the program. Task manager said it was still running and I did find an icon in the system tray but nothing would resurrect the app. Had to kill it with Task Manger.

I think I'll just stick with MWsnap (freeware): http://www.mirekw.com/

@ #10 cancunhans The reason you are getting the message "Register Global Hotkey (Print Screen) failed" is because you are already running a program that is using the default hotkey, what you have to do is change the conflicting hotkey to something else in one of the programs that is using it.
Hope this helps

I tried recording 1 lap of a race sim game (gtr evo) and i chose the wmv format. The result was terrible. I presume this software is only for capturing low cpu usage programs.

I always use the standard windows screen capture(print screen, open paint, paste it in.) so i dont really need another screen capture.

I'll try recording the screen in a smaller format to test if its better.

While this isn't the total disaster that the aborted giveaway was, the code quality isn't very good. #8, oliviab, the installer just dumps this into the same folder as the previous version, leaving the previous shortcuts and adding this version's (i.e., low quality installer). Still has rampant, egregious spelling errors. Changes the Access Control List for its Program Files folder so that it can improperly write to it (what good is Vista UAC when Microsoft lets installers do absolutely anything, and without any prompts?)

Neither the screen recorder nor the screen capture support multiple monitors. Both caused bizarre display problems on my PC (no other capture/recorder program does that). The screen recorder reported several errors and the output file was corrupted.

People have mentioned some alternatives. For screen video recording and editing, the commercial BSR Screen Recorder and Movie Lab are very good. There are tons of screen capture utilities; for basic high-quality captures on Vista and Windows 7, I like the commercial NTWind WinSnap. For annotation (presently not so good for capture) there's the commercial MicroInvention CrossGL SnapDraw and the free FastStone Image Viewer (Edit, Draw Board).

For J Smith :

You should download the application again and install it, if this can't help then you should clean your registry error using CCleaner or else there is program crash with others application installed in your pc.

Pretty good, aside from some spelling mistakes.
Exit is "Exist"
"organizep pofile" is another example (from the popup tooltip at the far right it is correct, but in the file menu, it is spelled this way.)
and theres "aotu save".

Spell check would be a good idea, especially when not using your native language.
Otherwise, people look down on you. Even if its a good software, they will think its not just because of that.

My initial impressions were favourable. Both programs were easy and quick to install on Windows XP SP3. The GUI designs are good - simple, easy to use, and offering plenty of configuration options.

However, that's as far as my favourable impressions went. I tried capturing three videos running on another media player, using three different settings, after Googling for advice on formats (the program offers little guidance on which to choose). I was trying to achieve maximum quality output. The first couple of attempts looked rather grainy and had appreciable sync delays between video and audio.

So far, not very remarkable. Here's the interesting bit: my third recording attempt led within seconds to a Windows crash with a blue screen error. The blue screen announced that Windows had shut down to prevent damage to my system, and warned me to uninstall any recently installed hardware or software. The blue screen of death! Wow, I haven't seen that for a long time. Takes me back to the days of Windows 98.

Ok, so the initial graininess and syncing problems would not be a big deal, if I had the confidence to experiment further with the program. But a blue screen error, on a well-maintained, stable version of XP Pro, with plenty of free memory, and no other applications running at the same time? No way. Far too risky. I uninstalled immediately. At least I can say that the two programs went away quickly and politely, without leaving any registry traces.

I would be very interested to hear from the developers how much testing was conducted on the screen recorder program before it was released.

I forgot to add that I installed in Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7 Professional 32 bit; no issues as of yet on either system. One stupid little note is that you need to keep the recording window maximized. I had minimized it during the test and got a recording of my desktop ;)

Just installed on XP pro. Both registered/activated successfully.

Launched CAPTURE and selected the SCROLLING WINDOW option. This worked and the included Image Editore launched with the captured pic inside it.

However, these problems occurred:-

1) I had a dialogue box of another piece of software showing at the time, which was forward of the window I was capturing. It captured this dialogue box also over the window I was capturing was part of the captured image) - even though it was the only the window I was capturing which was outlined in red.

2) I decided to have another go. I removed the dialogue box, selected SCROLLING WINDOW and clicked capture. This time, the edit part of the software DID NOT launch so couldn't see if I had a successful capture.

The CAPTURE icon was still showing in the taskbar. Niether Left clicking or Right clicking, nor double clicking did anything so I pressed CTRL + ALT + DELETE and killed the ScreenCapture.exe process. I noticed then that there were 3 processes of ImageEditor.exe running also - so I killed them all.

I have just had another go and after capturing the ImageEditor does NOT launch.

Getting a little fed up now. Shall wait a little longer before un-installing in case some other GAOTD users have found an answer. Not looking good. Haven't tested the SCREEN RECORDER yet - don't know if I can be bothered.
