Good idea for a piece of software, just a shame it doesn't remember your passwords too.

nice to see followup by dev. with caveat that i have not even been tempted to download the offering/test/whatsamawhat version (since these squirrels are hilarious), my responses to your replies:

"Enterprise Password Generator" - the earlier goatd edition (erroneously linked "edition") was too limited to ever qualify as "enterprise".

the cpu usage does not seem explained by d/l and install of unavail NET parts. though perhaps hi cpu could occur with a slow computer on very fast connection? I've never experienced that as well as i recall, but I don't know about adobe registration. i avoid adobe/macromedia junk. they're the autodesk of macs, like jobs is the ballmer of apple, so..

feature ads/nags - the proper way to advertise (properly greyed) features in menus that are available only on higher editions is to rewrite the tooltip/bubblehelp text in the lesser/crippled/lite versions. and that UI/UE tip is worth over 100 euros in avoided damage to customer relations :-)

I am Diplodock representative, and on behalf f Diplodock staff, I would like to first of all thank you all for downloading and trying our product.

I would also like to apologize for the fact that the description featured on this page was for Professional Edition, while what was 0offered was Light and then Standard editions.
Additionally, I would like to quickly comment on several issues that came up:

- Like was already mentioned .NET Framework is part of later versions of Windows, like Windows Vista. It improves user’s security by restricting system resources that applications can access, and frequently programs written using the framework outperform other programs, because frameworks JIT compiler can make optimizations specific to user’s processor on the fly, which results in better performance.

- Some have mentioned long installation times and high CPU usage afterwards. This probably has to do with the fact that .NET Framework was missing on the computers of these users and was automatically downloaded and installed by setup. And it takes considerably longer to install it than to install the program itself.

- This product is NOT and was never meant to be a password manager or password storage application. Nor was it supposed to be a simple password generator for home users who want to come up with a few nice easy to remember passwords. It is an Enterprise Password Generator that is supposed to be used by organizations that need to adhere to strict password policies they have. Therefore comparisons to RoboForm and similar tools are not really valid, because these products have different purposes.

- Some have mentioned long Activation Procedure. Well, some programs like Adobe Products for example also have long activations procedure that can take a few seconds of 100% CPU usage even on faster computers.

- Many have said that it’s easy to come up with passwords without any program or that at the most freeware web resources will do. While this is certainly true if you only need a few simple passwords, it is not true if you need to quickly generate many thousands sophisticated passwords that match your security policy or follow some complex mask.

- A lot of users have complained about nag screens that say that such or such feature is not available in Light/Standard Edition. While these messages may seem annoying they cannot be called nag screens because they do not have a timer nor do they pop-out when you start or close the program. They only appear when you try to access a feature which is not available. From our experience we have learned that users frequently do not quite understand the difference between different editions, and so they go for the least feature-packed edition. And if the edition with less features than other edition did not have a way to let users know that the functionality they may be looking for does exist in other editions, it would be much worse for users that do need those features.

- Some have asked about existence of the library that other applications can use to implement password generation capability internally. There is such library. It is part of Developer Edition of this product.

- Some have asked if it is possible not to pay “hundreds of bucks” for this product if they are a small non-profit organization. Yes, it is possible, we offer Special license precisely to such organizations! Please use our website to contact us.

Once again, thank you all!

Just goes to show.

-This is a program that doesn't do as advertised.
-Is normally ridiculously priced
-The functions that it does have can be done by several other programs who have many more features and possibilities then this one even if it did do as advertised
-The function it does have, creating a random password, could just as well have be done without any program what so ever

Nonetheless, there are still 68 thumbs up for it.

Do not create/store ANY critical (Bank details/social security/personal identifiers/PIN numbers) passwords or numbers on your computer at all! Buy a notebook, buy a small safe, write the info in the notebook, store the notebook in the safe.

This program is free for a reason. It shut down on me 3 times in 5 minutes.On top of that the standard version they give you doesn't support half of the features. I think it's a waste of space on your hard drive. Also I agree with Kim, RoboForm is Free and actually works.

It looked like a waste of time on this one since I've been using ROBOFORM for the past two years and this doesn't even measure up to that. Of course you have to purchase the pro version to have more than 10 logins. What's also great is you can edit and print all you logins in case of a computer meltdown.

#77--Thanks for the 411. My programming knowledge in general is rusty and specifically regarding Python is nonexistent, but I will try to find out enough about it to have some idea what I'm doing before I try it out. If you (or anyone, for that matter) can point me in the right direction of where to look for introductory info on Python, I would appreciate it.

Pseudo-random generators are much more random than most users.

Over the past 30 years I've implemented any number of password schemes to force people to use good passwords. People would rather fight to evade the system than to create a decent password.

For a long time I used a simple algorithm using a made-up word, parts of a couple dates and some information from each site.

I could usually guess what password I'd used...until I started changing them on a regular basis, then hundreds of passwords became thousands.

I got Password Safe, dropped it onto a USB drive with the longest key it would take, and now things work pretty well. I generate passwords with Password Safe, I make them as long as people will let me, I use whatever the maximum set of characters allowed.

Occasionally (o.k., some days it's LOTS,) I screw up and the password saved isn't the one current. At such a time I request my password from the site, they help me get it or reset it, and I load the new pw into the Safe.

I can also use the safe to store other data I need but don't really want public, account numbers, business sales tax numbers, EIN's for companies. If there's something really important it gets stored in a secure encrypted volume on the USB drive--or on paper in a vault with no electronic copies at all.

Are some pw generators better than others? Undoubtedly. Are any of them worse than the laziest user? No way!

And now that everyone has many accounts with pw's I can't blame anyo9ne for not remembering them--especially if they change them on any of the common schedules.

Say I have 20 pw's and I change them monthly, after one year I have 240 pw's which I have had to remember long enough to keep in long-term memory. After 5 years, even without adding accounts I will have had 1200 pw's to remember. Now, make them random combinations of characters. If you remember one, is it likely to be the correct one? Remember you have memorized 60 pw's for each account....

Generating them is a fairly easy task if the person who wrote the code uses a decent pseudo-random generator. Remembering them is the hard part, and I would be a millionaire several times over if I had a dollar for every time I found a password written on the underside of a keyboard....

Try this Python program to generate pronouncable passwords (such as nodokuvyb, zefofebyl, ...)

import random
cons = ['b', 'c', 'd', 'f', 'g', 'h', 'j', 'k', 'l', 'm', 'n', 'p', 'q', 'r', 's', 't', 'v', 'w', 'z']
vowel = ['a', 'e', 'i', 'o', 'u', 'y']

c = cons
v = vowel

res = ''

for i in range(1, 10):
  res += random.choice( c )
  t = c
  c = v
  v = t

print res

BTW, terminology used by GAOTD and this software are different, so beware. What GAOTD calls "registration" (putting in serial no.), PG 2.0 Std. calls "activation", which is what GAOTD calls its time check process. Don't let it confuse you.

Everything I try in this program is "not supported in Standard", so I may have to give up on this one. Does anybody know of a free program that will create pronounceable passwords and usernames? If this one did, I'd be singing its praises right now. I know, I can upgrade to one that does, but those are not free, and that's what I need to get.

Well, the .NET FW evolves, so new versions are coming. And don't tell me it's so much bothering to install a new version when you need it.

As for VB6 - it probably was a good language when it was released, but now it's crap compared to modern languages (and IDEs).

Like others have said: First it's not truly random. Second, There are many free/open source version, which should be slightly moded or tweaked by you. Thats because those programs use standard algorithms, which scripts can be easy written to cracked them in no time. Finally I don't want to remember strings of data such like: g-6%*mU$^jg0dn4#5Ff&f@4. It's just not practical. If you need to secure something that important, that are other methods to use.

#11:
Pseudo-random numbergenerators are still secure in creating passwords as long as the generation algorithm uses chaotic data collection. Normally, this involves collecting background events (such as network activity, and mouse and keymovements). Truecrypt does this, and to date, no properly created volume (i.e. has at least an 8+ letter password within full password range) has been cracked.

Also, most systems that require entering a password should be resistant against brute-force attacks, such as not allowing 30+ passwords to be entered within a single day.

Never use a password generator you didn't compile yourself after examing the source code. It's incredible the number of these things that people get wrong. A common failing is to not use sufficient bits of entropy as input for the PRNG with the result that the space of solutions is considerablt smaller than you expect. This one may well be written by someone who knows what he's doing, but I'm not willing to take that on trust. Grab the FIPS code and write your own if you really want to use one of these. And make sure to use a *good* source of entropy, like asking the user to do mouse and keyboard movements to sample timing bits. Lots of them.
